2 Australian farmers are paid for the production of Milk solids, kgs of Fat + Protein. Fat and Protein production is displayed as a Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) in pounds of production above the average in a 305 day lactation. Genetically, do all cows have the ability to produce at the same level? The example below is an Australian herd, showing the actual performance of its first lactation cows, broken into quartiles based on pedigree average for combined PTA Fat and Protein. The table below shows the values of the top and bottom group. Group Ave. PTA F+P Combined F+P # 1st Lact. Highest Combined Solids kg 22 Lowest Combined Solids kg 22 The highest group of first lactation cows averaged PTA of combined Fat + Protein and: Had an average PTA of 53.3lbs (24.17kgs) more than the lowest group. High production cows make you money! No farmer today can afford cows that give $150 less milk per lactation. Talk to your WWS Representative about ways to improve your herd s ability to increase production and profitability. 3 Productive life measures the ability of a cow to resist culling for any reason. Productive Life () only gives credit for the first 10 months of each lactation (305 days) hence rewarding cows who calve regularly and spend more time in peak production. The average is 29 months (approx. 3 lacts). A of 1.0 means the daughters of the bull average one additional month of productive life compared to breed average. is highly correlated to DPR (+0.64) and (-0.45). Somatic Cell Score () measures a bull s milking daughter s somatic cell count. The USA average is 3.00, with lower values indicating lower SCC, therefor a lower score is desirable. Genetically, do all cows have the ability to last in today s and not get mastitis and other diseases? The example below from an 800 cow genomically tested herd shows the actual performance of cows when divided into quartiles based on genomic &. 4 ility (FI) is the most complete way to identify bulls that will sire daughters with a high ability to get in-calf early in the mating period. ility is made up of Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) a cow s ability to become pregnant in an estrus cycle, and CCR and HCR (Cow and Heifer Conception Rate) the likelihood of a cow to become pregnant to a given insemination. Genetically, do all cows in your herd have the same ability to become pregnant? The example below shows the actual performance of the best and the worst cows, based on genomic DPR, within an 800 cow herd. Each point of DPR is expected to correspond to four fewer days open. 5 Sire Conception Rate () measures the fertility of the bull. Independently analysed by for all companies, using actual on farm data for pregnancy testing and calving records. An of +1.0 indicates a 1% increase in conception rate when compared to the average sire. Many factors effect a cow falling pregnant, some factors are harder to control than others, but semen selection considering is an easy choice. The average first service conception rate in Australia is 41%. Do all bulls have the same likelihood of getting cows pregnant? High fertility bulls make you money with more pregnant cows! The example below shows the actual performance of the highest and lowest bulls ranked by in a 1100 cow dairy. Each point of is expected to correspond to an increase in conception of 1%. This herd used a cross section of sires from the five main AI studs. No farmer today can afford low fertility semen.
