1 MICHAEL STEAR Present Position: Professor of Animal Biology at AgriBio, Department of Animal, Plant and Soil Sciences since June The aim of my research is to understand the mechanisms underlying variation among livestock in resistance to infection and to use this understanding to develop better methods of controlling disease and the effects of subclinical infection. We are particularly interested in genetic variation in immune responses to parasites of cattle, sheep and fish. Our research includes epidemiology, genetics, immunology, pathology, host-parasite coevolution and mathematical modelling. Professional Experience: Professor, Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine, University of Glasgow from (Senior Research Fellow since 1990). I led a multidisciplinary, multi-centre research group studying disease susceptibility in livestock and fish. My grants supported 14 scientists and administrators and the team was one of the largest and most successful in the University of Glasgow. Førsteamanuensis in the Department of Animal Genetics, National Veterinary Institute, Oslo, Norway, I developed molecular methods to identify bulls that would transmit superior disease resistance to their calves. Visiting Professor, Department of Genetics and Breeding, Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, United States, Department of Agriculture, I was recruited to lead the Genetics of Disease Resistance project comprising three scientists and four technicians. Research Fellow and Faculty member in the Department of Immunology, The John Curtin School of Medical Research, The Australian National University, A.C.T I led the bovine immunogenetics group compromising one post-doctoral research assistant, two PhD students, one full-time and several part time technicians. I have also held visiting professor appointments at several universities including the University of Oslo, Louisiana State University, University of Nebraska, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Sydney and Curtin University of Technology. In recent years I have collaborated with scientists from Australia (Professors Raadsma and Nicholas, University of Sydney, Dr Groth, Curtin University of Technology); Canada (Professor Mallard, University of Guelph, Dr Ellis, University of Sakatchewan); France (Drs Moreno, Cabaret INRA, Dr Jacquiet, Ecole Nationale Veterinaire de Toulouse); Germany (Dr Buitkamp, Institut fuer Tierzucht, Bayerische Landesanstalt fuer Landwirtschaft); Italy (Drs Casu, Carta, Instituto Zootecnico e Caseario par la Sardegna); Poland (Dr Moskwa Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor Doligalska and Dr Donskow, University of Warsaw); Spain (Professors Arranz, Rojo Dr Gutierrez-Gil, University of Leon; Dr J. I also administered these courses for the first four years of the new degree course. I have acted as an external examiner on several undergraduate courses, most recently 3 from the University of Liverpool BVMS degree (Molecular Biology and Genetics, Animal Breeding and Research Projects). I have also run postgraduate courses in Statistics, Bioinformatics, Genetics and Animal Breeding as well as Preparation of Scientific Papers and Grants in several countries including Spain, Germany, Poland, UK and USA. In addition, I deliver 5-10 invited lectures a year at Conferences, Workshops and scientific departments. I have supervised over 20 postgraduate students; all of these students have graduated except one who withdrew for medical reasons (Pott s disease).
