SPOT SERIES: HOLISTIC HEALTH A NATURAL APPROACH TO HOLISTIC HEALTH Part 5: Vaccination & Preventative Safety Vaccinate for this, take a pill to prevent that. Do you know what all of these vaccines are for and if your pet is truly at risk? We will highlight some tips for managing your dogs vaccination schedule as well as some chemical free alternatives to common pest preventatives. May 20, 2014
Introductions Jen Haines: Co-Owner of The Green Spot Omaha & Vice President of Pug Partners of Nebraska
SPOT SERIES: HOLISTIC HEALTH A NATURAL APPROACH TO HOLISTIC HEALTH Part 5: Vaccination & Preventative Safety Discuss common vaccinations & preventatives Evaluate risk & vaccine requirements Discuss side effects Natural Alternatives
EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT So why then does a Chihuahua receive the same vaccine dose as a Great Dane?
WHAT IS A VACCINE?!! A substance of killed microorganisms, living attenuated organisms, or living fully virulent organisms that is administered to produce or artificially increase immunity to a particular disease.
COMMON VACCINES CORE: Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus & Rabies NON-CORE: Leptospira, Bordetella, Borrelia and Chlamydophilia, Caronavirus, Lyme & Giardia
Who Regulates Vaccinations? AVMA - American Veterinary Medical Association Founded in 1863, AMVA is a not-for-profit association representing more than 84,000 US Veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services.
AVMA Standards for Vaccination Age 6-8 weeks: Parvo, Distemper with the option to vaccinate for parainfluenza & kennel cough Age weeks: Parvo, Distemper, Infectious Hepatitis with the option for paprinfluenza and kennel cough Age weeks: Parvo, Distemper, Infectious Hepatitis with option for Leptospirosis and Lyme Age weeks: Parvo and Rabies with the option for Leptospirosis and Lyme Age 1 year: Parvo, Distemper, Infectious Hepatitis and Rabies with optional vaccines for Parainfluenza, Kennel Cough (Bordetella Bronchiseptica) Leptospirosis and Lyme.
If you lost count, that s FIVE vaccinations in your pets first year of life!
What are my options? Boosters (or re-vaccination) Annual Boosters for Distemper, Parvo & Hepatitis 1 or 3 year boosters Bi-Annual Boosters DHLPPC booster for Kennel Cough, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza Titer Test (Blood test to check antibodies) Distemper/Parvo/Hepatitis: Most progressive veterinarians will do a titer test to check for antibodies instead of a booster, as these vaccines can easily last 7 years or more. Rabies: Frequency is based on the titer tests and the prevalence of the disease in your area. The vaccine is good for at least 3 years in most dogs.
What is required by law? In the state of Nebraska, only Rabies (3 year) is required by law. Titer tests ARE accepted. Did you know: There is no medical or chemical difference between the 1 year and the 3 year vaccine (other than the label.) Alabama is the only state which requires a 1 year vaccine.
Allergic Skin Disease! SIDE EFFECTS A British veterinarian has, for the last 20+ years, asked those clients who present him with an itchy, allergic dog, When did this itchiness begin? 75% remember clearly: It began within 1 month of their pets puppy shots
SIDE EFFECTS Autoimmune Disease in Dogs! In a research study published in 1996, researchers published Vaccine-Associated Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia in the Dog. (Duval and Giger, J Vet Intern Med 1996;10: ) A study about immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), (dogs immune systems attacked their own red blood cells) The question was asked, Did anything precede the onset of IMHA? A significant group of the sick dogs had been vaccinated with the usual yearly vaccines one month earlier.
Cancer in Cats:! SIDE EFFECTS Since the early 90 s, researchers have found a correlation between vaccines and a tumor that arises where the vaccines are commonly given, in the area of loose skin at the back of the neck, or in the back of the hind leg. Uniformly fatal, and exclusively linked with Rabies & Feline Leukemia Vaccine Associated Sarcoma - formal name given in 2000.
SIDE EFFECTS Many other vaccine side effects include:! Diabetes Allergies Kidney Disease Behavior
WHERE DO YOU STAND? Vaccines in both our companion pets and humans can be a very controversial and sensitive topic for many. We encourage you to do your own research and form your own educated opinion about how you choose to manage your pets vaccination schedule. 17 PREVENTATIVES HEARTWORM FLEA & TICK
Heartworm What is Heartworm? Heartworms are a variety of roundworm with the clinical name dirofilaria immitis, spread by mosquitos Dogs can only get Heartworm disease through infected mosquitoes.
Heartworm A Mosquito must Be female Be of a species that allows development of the worms in the cells of the body (not all species do) Be of a species that feeds on mammals (not all species do) Must have bitten an animal infected with stage 1 (L1) heartworms about two weeks prior, since approximately 14 days are necessary for the larvae from the other animal to develop to stage 3 (L3) inside the transmitting mosquito
Heartworm A Mosquito must (Continued) Must then bite your dog, when the larvae reach stage L4-L5, which takes three to four months, under the right conditions they can begin to travel via your dog s bloodstream to the lungs and heart.! Must be a dog with weakened immune system. If your dog s immune system doesn't destroy these invaders, they will reach maturity (L6), the adult stage, in which males can grow to six inches in length and females to 12.
What are Conventional Preventatives? A pesticide ingested to kill larvae in your dog s bloodstream to keep the adult parasites at bay.! Does not actually PREVENT anything. Rather, it periodically poison larvae to keep them from turning into adults
Heartworm: Conventional Preventatives Ivermectin (Heartgard & Heartgard Plus, Iverhart Plus & Iverhart MAX and Tri-Heart Plus Milbemycin oxime (Interceptor & Sentinel by Novartis) Selamectin (Revolution by Pfizer Moxidectin (Advantage Multi, ProHeart )
Prevention - Non-Toxic Style Healthy Immune System: The healthier the dog, the less attractive they will be to all types of pests and parasites, and the better able their immune system will be to fight off invaders. Parasites are more attracted to unhealthy animals. Weak immune system = easy prey for pests & parasites Do not overload body with harmful toxins Use a non-toxic barrier in your yard and/or on your dog Test every 6 months to 1 year
Prevention - Non-Toxic Style Herbs which have anti-parasitic properties include: Geranium, Garlic, Black Walnut, Artemisia, Wormwood, Clove Flower Buds, Ginger Root, Turmeric, Spearmint, Hawthorn Berry, Capsicum, Lavender and Tea Tree! *Garlic* is a blood cleanser which is believed to strengthen the immune system and repel both mosquitoes and fleas
Flea & Tick
Flea & Tick The dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis) is a species of few that lives as an ectoparasite on a wide variety of mammals, particularly the domestic dog & cat. (Tapeworms, Dermatitis, Cat Scratch Fever)! The American Dog Tick is the largest of the eastern wood ticks, and the one you are most likely to see. Ticks are arachnids and, like their spider cousins, have eight legs. It is reddish-brown with white or yellow markings. The male tick is about 1/8 long and the female is slightly larger (Lyme & Spotted Fever)

Prevention - Non-Toxic Style Many topical treatments and sprays are available to use, weekly or situationally. Neem, Citronella, Mint, Lemon Grass, Sage and Cedarwood are common herbs and oils found in these sprays.! Keep your dogs immune system healthy and they will! not be an ideal host Regular bathing, vacuuming and other good house keeping practices
Prevention - Non-Toxic Style Diatomaceous Earth - food grade diatomaceous earth and silica gels can be used on your lawn, dog bedding, and carpeting. They can be dusted on the dog s body or given internally if intestinal parasites are suspected. The dust dries out the bodies of fleas and ticks which will eventually cause them to die. Nematodes - a very safe, natural, and biological method of ridding your yard of fleas. Nematodes are very tiny members of the roundworm family and are safe for people and animals. These tiny predators feed on flea eggs and larvae. Nematodes come in dry form, just sprinkle on the lawn, add water, and let the flea destruction begin!
EPA Warnings The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has issued! several warnings against pesticides used for pest prevention. Now required to list side effects on packaging, in dogs and cats that can include skin effects, such as irritation, redness, or gastrointestinal problems that include vomiting or diarrhea, or effects to the nervous system, such as trembling, appearing depressed or seizures.
