Judging Operations Department 8051 Arco Corporate Drive Raleigh, NC (919) FALL 2010 Volume 11 Number 46 JUDGING SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS T H E AKC N EWSLETT E R F O R C O N F O R M AT ION JUD GES October 1, 2010 The judging of special attractions is an acceptable component for new breed and additional breed applicants to gain actual judging experience. For the new breed applicant this type of experience serves as an introduction to the judging process, to actually examine, gait, award exhibits and complete a judge s book. Regardless of the breed(s) being requested or those judged this experience can be used by the new breed applicant. In regards to the additional breed judge the experience is not counted unless the breed being applied for is present and competing, so the judge actually has had their hands on that breed(s). When listing the experience on the additional breed application, remember, there can only be one entry when judging at the group level. Judges may judge non regular special attraction groups the day before or after having judged the breed(s) that competed in that particular group. Judges may not judge non regular classes of any breed(s) the day before they judge that same breed(s) in the regular classes at an AKC event. Examples would be multiple generation classes, Eukanuba Breeders Cup or any Special Attraction that features a number of breeds with multiple entries of the same breed that you could be scheduled to judge the following day in the regular classes. John P. Wade D irector, Judging Operations AKC POLICY ON ADVERTISING AND SOLICITING JUDGING ASSIGNMENTS The American Kennel Club s decision to remove the prohibition on advertising and solicitation by all AKC judges in conformation, companion and performance events is effective October 19, This change in policy is based on the tremendous growth in the amount and types of AKC events, together with the increasing numbers of available AKC-approved judges, and the fact that modern technology offers a way to connect available judges to event-giving clubs across the nation without regard to the traditional limitations of familiarity, communications, and geography. Therefore, based on these factors, and given that judges are not AKC employees, the AKC Board believes that judges should no longer be prohibited from advertising or soliciting assignments. The judge is responsible for ensuring that all information is factual and accurate, and that any advertising or solicitation is not fraudulent, deceptive, or misleading.

Why Stay On Time? One of the most common reasons I hear from judges that they are behind time in their judging is that they want to give each exhibit a good look. They value the exhibitors and truly enjoy the dogs. They want people to feel they got their money s worth and be fair to every one. Sometimes judges are late because of inefficiency or indecisiveness, but I have found that it is primarily the desire to do a good job that can leave them looking less than efficient, in the end. Your steward can be your best friend in helping you stay on time. Not only will they keep the dogs moving in and out of the ring efficiently when asked, but if you request a discreet notification should you start taking too much time, most of them are quite willing to accommodate you. Experienced judges are expected to judge at 25 dogs an hour and new breed and juniors judges at 20. The minutes allotted for each dog includes the basic procedure of seeing each of the dogs stacked, coming, going, and on the side individually once during the initial class, plus any additional evaluation in order to make your decision, along with book maintenance, and awarding of ribbons. When pictures are added, you realize you need to be efficient and decisive. Maybe you re behind because you take too many steps. If you need to walk all the way around each dog as in the case of evaluating markings that may be disqualifications or create illusions, by all means do so. It is likely not necessary in every breed and takes extra time. It is tempting to use more time for a singleton class. If you watch the dog being stacked twice and go around alone twice which takes an extra 30 seconds; you will be behind by quite a lot at the end of the day with 175 dogs to be judged. Most of the experienced judges are efficient here, knowing that the dog will be seen again in Winners where they may regait as needed. Many judges consider it polite to move the class together or individually around in Winners, but any regaiting is optional. Of course, Reserve Winners is a separate class in which further movement is also at will. If your intention is to give every exhibitor a fair look but you go slowly on the first part and then change your pace to make up time, the ones you judged more quickly will feel cheated. Not your intention at all! Don t go slowly for dogs and then speed up on bitches. When making your final decisions, bring the dogs you are considering up to the same area of the line so you take fewer steps than walking back and forth from the front of the line to the back of the line. Not only is it more efficient, but you will also appear more decisive when you are working with specific dogs than when you seem to be wandering around the ring in desperation. It is easier to compare them when they are near each other, and your feet will thank you at the end of the day. The Show Committee depends on you and is expecting you to stay on time. If you are more than 20 minutes late at the end of your assignment, you may hold up a group. The result is a lot of exhibitors and other judges wondering why you haven t kept up. The entire show depends on each judge judging at the anticipated rate in order for the show to flow smoothly and end in a timely fashion. Most importantly, being late can create a hardship on dogs if they have to wait around in extreme weather conditions because a judge is late. Exhibitors need to know what to expect in terms of your time and procedure. They depend on judges to keep measured time so they can anticipate when their dogs should be at ringside. If your intention is to honor your exhibitors, you will not have accomplished your goal unless you stay on time. It s easy to stay on time if you remember to: Establish a consistent rhythm when judging so that each exhibit gets the same amount of time for their initial exam and gaiting pattern Regait in Winners and Reserve Winners only as needed Keep steps to a minimum, for time and for your feet Ask for the assistance of your steward Bring together the dogs you are considering for comparison Doing these things will keep your exhibitors and show committee happy and help you appear consistent, efficient and decisive! 3 Mary Dukes Mary Dukes has been involved in purebred dogs for over 30 years, initially as a breeder, then as a professional handler and currently as an Executive Field Rep for the American Kennel Club. Mary got her first Whippet in 1975 and as a breeder she operated under the Delacreme prefix. She bred over 50 champions including 5 all breed Best In Show winners and 2 National Specialty winners. She also was the breeder/owner/ handler of the multiple specialty winner Ch. Delacreme de la Renta, ROMX who is one of the top sires in the history of the breed, siring over 115 champions to date. As a professional handler on the West Coast (California), she showed primarily the hound breeds but also a smattering of breeds in other groups and has handled various dogs to over 30 Best In Show wins and has won Groups with dogs from all 7 Groups. She handled hundreds of dogs to their titles and had BIS, Group and specialty wins on a number of individual dogs. Although unable to judge official events in the U.S. due first to her handling profession and now to her employment by the AKC, Mary has judged both the Futurity and breeders classes at her own breed s national specialty on more than one occasion. She has also judged a number of sweepstakes, served as a judge at several national Top Twenty competitions and was the judge for the Australian Pedigree PAL Junior Showmanship finals at the Adelaide Royal in Since August of 2005, Mary has been employed by the American Kennel Club as an Executive Conformation Field Rep covering shows in the southeast, primarily Georgia and the Carolinas. She has a 23-year-old daughter Noelle who is a professional horseman in Southern California. Mary resides in the Charlotte, NC area with her two dogs Steven and Micha and spends much of her free time riding the trails on her mare Lexie. 4 From the LEONBERGER CLUB OF AMERICA Judges Education Committee The Leonberger is a recent and proud addition to the AKC s Working Group. Because many judges may not be familiar with our breed, we wanted to take this opportunity to discuss a most important element of our Standard which has, at times, been overlooked. In many AKC breeds, trimming and coat alteration is perfectly acceptable and, in some cases, required. Not so with the Leonberger. This dog is to be shown naturally as clearly stated in our breed standard: Coat Natural appearance of the coat is essential to breed type. Therefore, except for neatening of the feet, Leonbergers are to be presented naturally, with no alteration of the coat, to include sculpting, trimming of whiskers, or any other alterations whatsoever. NO RIBBON SHALL BE AWARDED TO A DOG WHOSE COAT APPEARS TO BE ALTERED, AND JUDGES ARE TO ERR ON THE SIDE OF WITHHOLDING OF RIBBONS IF THERE IS ANY DOUBT. We have been told by veteran AKC show people that we re dreaming if we think we can succeed in the AKC offering dogs shown in such a natural state. We do not believe this to be true. Our ability to continue to show dogs based on the tenets of our standard is not up to us, it s up to those of you who judge our dogs in the AKC breed ring. We ask only that you be cognizant of what we are trying to achieve with these wonderful dogs as they make their way into the AKC show world. Click here to view the entire breed standard for the Leonberger. Judges Presenting Seminars Seminars in conjunction with judging assignments: It is requested that if asked to give a breed specific seminar in conjunction with an assignment, that the seminar be presented after your judging has been completed. If the assignment is the National Specialty and you are the Judges Education Coordinator, this will be reviewed on a case by case basis. If it is a general presentation, it may precede your judging. However, there should not be any dogs presented that are entered under the judge. When dogs are used in a presentation, regardless of when the seminar takes place, we request that the dogs be identified by age and sex only. This would allow dogs currently being exhibited to participate in the presentation. 4 The Standard

Dentition and the Rottweiler The American Rottweiler Club would like to request that judges examine our Rottweilers thoroughly for correct dentition. Our Standard calls for: Bite and Dentition Teeth 42 in number (20 upper, 22 lower), strong, correctly placed, meeting in a scissors bite lower incisors touching inside of upper incisors. Serious Faults Level bite; any missing tooth. Disqualifications Overshot, undershot (when incisors do not touch or mesh); wry mouth; two or more missing teeth. Unfortunately, it has recently come to light that a dog ranked in the Top 10 Rottweilers both currently and last year, actually has 2 missing teeth and another dog with 2 missing teeth won a specialty show Stud Dog Class 1. Both of these dogs should have been disqualified under our Breed Standard. In the case of the Top 10 dog, numerous judges, including a number of breeder judges, have examined him, not only on his way to his Championship, but in his career as a special, and yet no one has ever disqualified the dog under our Standard. The most common missing teeth are the P1s, but ANY tooth can be missing. In the above instance it is the two M3s, which are often small and much more difficult to see. We do realize that trying to count teeth in the 2 minutes allotted you to exam each dog is not an easy task. However, practice in counting teeth by groups can drastically cut down on the time needed to determine if all 42 teeth are present. (See page 10 of our Judges Handbook at And if a dog is being uncooperative, please excuse him as unable to examine, rather than possibly pass on a dog with a serious or disqualifying fault. Dentition is of highest vital importance to the Rottweiler breed, so please help us maintain the integrity of our Standard. Thank you. 1 AKC Rules, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges: The Stud Dog and Brood Bitch must also be examined to determine if there is a condition that would require disqualification* or excusal under the Rules, AKC policy or the breed standard. Wicket Refinements The complete process for using the Wicket for Measuring is described in Rules, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges. All judges who judge measurable breeds are expected to be familiar with this process. However, the following information is a refinement of the Measuring Procedures resulting in the optimum efficiency, accuracy, and indisputable results. It is offered to assist judges interested in improving their overall judging skills. To begin with, both legs of the wicket must be set using a steel tape measure. Don t rely on the notches on the legs for accuracy. The most accurate way of adjusting the length of the wicket is to measure from the BOTTOM of the Lower Cross Bar to the bottom edge of the leg then snuggly tighten the knob to secure the leg. Then repeat the same process on the other leg. A measurement from the bottom of the leg up to the crossbar can be questioned by a handler since you have to look down onto a rounded surface of the bar. Any measurement from the center of the crossbar (to anywhere) is not correct. After the legs are set, locked and verified; lightly (but securely) grasp the center of the top bar of the wicket. Gravity will automatically balance and center the wicket. An overly tight grasp is not necessary and can affect the accuracy and efficiency of the measurement. Likewise, holding any other part of the wicket during the measurement is undesirable as it can affect the accuracy and efficiency of the measurement. Furthermore, heed the following warning holding the wicket by the lower crossbar or anywhere below is improper and unacceptable. A couple reminders: Anything performed more than ONCE during a measurement gives the perception of being biased, either for or against the handler. Let the exhibitor re-position the dog ONCE! Touch the highest point to be measured ONCE and leave your fingers on that point. The wicket is placed on it. Place the wicket on the dog ONCE! Finally: An exhibit can only be measured ONCE at an event. Lee Herr Executive Field Representative The Standard 5

Pug Bite Examination Once again the Pug Dog Club of America is requesting judges remember how to examine a Pug bite. The standard requires slightly undershot nothing else. We ask all judges to simply run the flat of their thumb between the lips to ascertain the exhibit is slightly undershot We also want to remind those of you judging Junior Showmanship that we teach our Juniors to use this method and when asked by the Junior Judge to show the bite, they simply state how to do it. We have written about this before and once again, ask all judges to follow our guidelines. After all, we want to encourage our Juniors, not discourage them. Charlotte Patterson President Pugs Dog Club of America Don t Forget to Judge Them All The above title does not mean to imply that you are skipping over some exhibits routinely. But, because of an incident that I observed recently, I went back to the books all of our books and, in fact, it is not addressed in any of them. Yet, what I should have observed should be common place and common sense to all of you. Picture it: you are privileged to be judging the dog classes and the Best of Breed class at a Specialty show with another judge judging the bitch classes. One would presume that when you get to the Best of Breed class, to properly choose the Best of Breed, Best of Winners, Best of Opposite Sex, etc., that you have to individually examine and gait all of the exhibits that you have previously not judged, to assess their merits against that breeds standard. Specifically, you would have to individually examine and gait the Winners Bitch seeing that you have not previously judged her. This is correct procedure and quite frankly has become so routine to you that it s second nature. At the end of the class, you have full hands-on knowledge of all of the dogs in your ring and can now make an educated choice based on your knowledge and not that of another. Now, hang in there with me don t turn the page. I ask you to not forget to apply this scenario when judging Junior Showmanship, when you are not the sole judge of all of the Junior classes on the day, yet are the sole judge of the Best Junior of the day. Some shows divide all six of the Junior Showmanship classes between two or three judges. Then, one judge is assigned to judge Best Junior. Even if you have previously judged several of the Novice and Senior classes, if you have not judged ALL of the classes on the day, it is your responsibility to evaluate the winners of the classes that you did not judge, along with those that you did judge. Just as in the aforementioned scenario, there are now Junior exhibitors in your ring that you have not, as of yet, judged on the day. To properly assess their expertise in presenting their dog to you, it is your responsibility to observe them using their skills, their knowledge of their breed, the following of your ring procedures and their appearance and conduct. To quote the Junior Showmanship Regulations book, Judges should be consistent with every Junior, using the same gaiting patterns, the same procedural requests, and allowing each Junior approximately the same amount of time. It is improper, on your part, if you do not extend the same courtesy, routine and evaluation to every Junior that shows in your ring. How else would you be able to make that educated choice? 8 John McCartney John McCartney has been involved in the sport of purebred dogs for over 30 years. John started as a breeder of Alaskan Malamutes in 1965 then began breeding American Staffordshire Terriers in 1980 under the kennel prefix: Fraja E.C. John was a member of the Alaskan Malamute Club of America and is currently a member of the American Staffordshire Terrier Club having previously held the position of 1st Vice President. In 1975 John was approved as an AKC Licensed Professional Handler and during his career had the honor of presenting several top winning dogs. Among those were the Top Winning American Staffordshire Terrier and Chesapeake Bay Retriever of all time as well as the first Alaskan Malamute to go Best In Show on the East Coast. He also bred and handled the only American Staffordshire Terrier to place in the group at Westminster KC and Montgomery Co Kennel Club shows at that time. John also handled three #1 Alaskan Malamutes, two #1 Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, five #1 American Staffordshire Terriers and two #1 Bernese Mountain Dogs. In 2004, John joined the American Kennel Club as a Conformation Executive Field Representative and covers shows in the mid-west (Indiana, Kentucky) region of the country. In his spare time John enjoys playing golf, bowling and likes tinkering with cars, stereos and watching the Chicago Cubs. A little known fact is that John was an Airborne Ranger with the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam war. a n s w e r k e y Poodles _ J Bulldogs _ C Chow Chows _ E Schipperkes _ D Dalmatians _ F Shiba Inu _ K Boston Terriers _ B Lowchen _ H American Eskimo Dogs _ A Chinese Shar-Pei _ I French Bulldogs _ G 8 The Standard

An Open Letter to All Dog Show Judges The United States Lakeland Terrier Club, Inc. is celebrating the 75th year of AKC recognition of our breed. We are proud of the accomplishments of our breed as a show dog and the consistent quality in a breed with such a small gene pool. A parent club s job is to preserve and to protect the breed. Rather than patting ourselves on the back for a job well done, we are entreating you who are approved to judge our breed and those who may judge in the future to read and to follow these recommendations so that our breed can remain true to its heritage. 1. All allowed colors are equally acceptable. The Lakeland Terrier comes in more color varieties than any other terrier breed. Our recognized solid colors include blue, black, liver, red and wheaten. Our saddle marked colors include blue and tan, black and tan, liver and tan, grizzle and tan and red grizzle. 2. It is currently unusual to see Lakelands in the show ring with naturally colored wheaten or golden tan furnishings. AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows, Ch. 11, Section 8-C clearly states that dogs must be excused if their color has been changed by artificial means. In effect, an exhibitor who plays by the rules sticks out like a sore thumb. Many of our member owner-handlers would prefer to play by the rules. Help us out here, please. 3. Our standard opens by stating The Lakeland Terrier was bred to hunt vermin. Contrary to popular belief, real working terriers must get along with other dogs. A Lakeland Terrier who does not spar should not be penalized. We require them to be confident, bold, gay and friendly but the overly aggressive, argumentative dog is not typical and should be strongly discouraged. Conversely, the mature Lakeland who expresses a shy or shy sharpness temperament should be heavily penalized. It is never appropriate to encourage or allow one exhibit to make contact in any way with another, nor to penalize an exhibit who turns his/her head in indifference or who otherwise ignores another dog. Thank you for your attention. With your help, the Lakeland Terriers who are most correct in breed type and character will carry forward the winning tradition of the past 75 years. United States Lakeland Terrier Club, Inc Up, UP AND Away Before you take that next foreign assignment make sure you are prepared for any situation that could occur. Listed below are a few suggestions that will hopefully make your trip to a foreign destination much more pleasant and safe. First, schedule an appointment with your physician to make sure you are physically capable of traveling long distances and up to date with all the immunizations needed when visiting a foreign country. Have your physician give you advice on any medications you can travel with for common ailments, allergy reactions, scrapes, blisters, pack eye drops, bug repellant and sunscreen. EMT or basic first aid kits are not available, so come prepared. You may want to take extra prescription drugs and consider purchasing evacuation insurance should you become sick and need medical assistance outside of the country. The Dog Judges Association of America has this insurance available to its members. You need to update your passport and have a photocopy in case it s ever lost or stolen. Always have a contact person in the United States and the country you are traveling to and share that information with friends or family. Check with your cell phone carrier to see if service is available and traveling with a laptop may be your best way to stay in contact. Check the weather forecast before leaving on your trip and make sure you take comfortable clothes suitable for the time of the year you are traveling. Shoes are very important; you may do a lot of walking or standing on your feet for long hours during judging. Hats and gloves might be useful should you be judging outdoors. Should you need batteries bring extra and take all necessary personal hygienic products like deodorant, razors, shaving cream, hair products and hand sanitizer. The accommodations are usually very good and many of the hotels offer an Englishspeaking staff, but many are limited in their English so purchase a translation dictionary. Wake-up calls can be challenging, but are easily solved by bringing an alarm clock. Consider bringing adapters for electrical connections that can be different from those in the U.S. If you are a picky eater you might want to bring snacks, such as breakfast bars. Should you have any special dietary needs plan in advance and those on a low sodium diet be prepared as there may be extra sodium in your meals. Lunch is sometimes served at ring side and is very casual. Be understanding and courteous and always remember you are a guest in your host country. Shows sometimes do not start on time and can run very late and the quality of the dogs is much like the United States ranging from excellent to poor. Most of the Kennel Clubs require you to sign all your judge sheets so having a signature stamp is handy. Should you want to bring a gift for club officials, a small item that represents the area in which you live is a great idea. Make sure your written contract with the club covers all the necessary expenses you require and have the kennel club purchase your airline ticket in case the shows are cancelled. If you have additional questions make sure they are resolved before the trip as unexpected expenses from either side during or after the trip often go unresolved. I would like to thank David & Anne Bolus, Michael Canalizo, Robin Stansell and Joyce Vanek for sharing some of their foreign assignment experiences with me for this article. Have a safe and healthy traveling adventure. Allen Odom AKC Executive Field Representative The Standard 9
