2 What is? recognizes that the health of humans, animals and ecosystems are interconnected. After all, approximately 75% of new emerging human infections have their origin in zoonotic agents, meaning that they are naturally transmitted from animals to humans. Ebola, HIV, dengue and MERS CoV are but some of the most recent infectious agents that have moved from animals to humans, with a devastating impact on public health. Therefore health science professionals, key opinion leaders and public health officials need to work together to attain optimal health for people, domestic animals, wildlife, and our environment. human health animal health human health animal health ONE HEALTH environment health environment health

3 Need for a Platform Recent global disease events have underpinned the increasing effects of zoonotic diseases on human and animal health. It has also become clear that changes in the environment, like population growth and climate change, are drivers for the emergence of such zoonoses. The initiators of the Platform have therefore set up an independent organization that promotes an integrated approach to combat different types of health threats: (re-) emerging neglected viruses, antiviral and antibiotic resistance, and bacterial and parasitic infections. By establishing the Platform, they wish to forge a community of stakeholders and to stimulate information-sharing and interaction at all levels.

4 Without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill. Dr. Keiji Fukuda, WHO s Assistant Director-General for Health Security Our mission The Platform is a strategic forum of stakeholders and a reference network that aims to enhance understanding of and preparedness for the current and future outbreaks of zoonoses, emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals, and antimicrobial resistance, including the ecological and environmental factors which impact on these diseases.

5 Our objectives 1. Provide a strategic forum for researchers, early career investigators, governmental and nongovernmental institutions, international organisations and companies to foster cross-sectoral collaborations 2. Identify and prioritize research gaps in the fields of zoonoses, emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, including the ecological and environmental factors which impact on these diseases, and advocate the resulting scientific research agenda - both on a scientific and policy level 3. Create synergies and facilitate the sharing of data between researchers and research groups in order to mend the prioritized research gaps, and translate these novel data to anyone who might benefit from them 4. Disseminate the results and insights of existing and new research projects on zoonoses, emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, including the ecological and environmental factors which impact on these diseases. 5. Establish an information reference centre for the community 6. Enhance awareness of the value of the One health approach through communication, facilitation of interactions between stakeholder groups, education and training, and specific efforts to convince non-believers, both in the research community and in the policy arena

8 INTERNATIONAL ONE HEALTH COALITION The Coalition is a collaborative partnership between the One Health Platform and existing international governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutions. In the aim to reinforce the concept, the coalition partners set up a framework for information-sharing, cooperation and awareness raising activities. Through the International Coalition, the Foundation builds a true global community of stakeholders EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS CIRCLE Through scholarships, awards and a wide network of connections, the Early Career Researchers Circle (YSC) aims to have a positive impact on the lives of young researchers and faculty and thus to nurture the future of Science. 12 The initiators of the Platform are Prof. Ab Osterhaus (chair), Prof. John MacKenzie (vice-chair) and Mrs. Chris Vanlangendonck (daily management and communication). Together, they form the organization s management board. Ab Osterhaus is one of the world s leading virologists. His interest in the One Health concept culminated in his current position as the CEO of Artemis One Health Foundation and professor of wildlife virology and virus discovery at the Utrecht University. He is also the director of the newly established Center for Infection Medicine and Zoonoses Research at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany. To foster cooperation in all aspects of one health, Ab Osterhaus has joined forces with professor John Mackenzie (Curtin University, Australia), who has an outstanding international reputation in the field of microbiology and its impacts on public health. Complementing the scientific knowledge of Ab Osterhaus and John MacKenzie is Chris Vanlangendonck s expertise in the field of science communication, management strategies and organizational dynamics. She is the director of Semiotics, the Belgium-based agency that provides strategic communication advice to scientists, scientific organizations and academic institutions.
