1 Full Title: Clinical Module Code: VETS S7020 Credits: 7.5 Valid From: Semester /16 ( September 2015 ) Module Delivered in 1 programme(s) Module Description: This module aims to give the student in depth knowledge of the principles & practice of laboratory testing as well as an introduction to pathology & disease. Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to Accurately and reliably perform a range of common veterinary laboratory tests Evaluate & report the results of laboratory tests. Describe the pathology of common systemic and infectious diseases. Describe the principles of infection, immunology, vaccination, wound healing and inflammation. Appraise scientific evidence and comprehend the basic principles of evidence-based medicine. Page 1 of 5

2 Module Content & Assessment Indicative Content The basic pathology of common systemic diseases & injuries of infectious/zoonotic diseases and the principles of infection control & biosecurity/biocontainment. Toxicology: the identification & veterinary nursing interventions in cases of common animal toxins & poisoning Aseptic technique & the correct collection & handling of blood, tissues and other body fluid samples The safe packaging & dispatch of biological specimens to outside reference laboratories. The principles and practise of haematology, biochemistry and serological testing Performance of common laboratory tests, such as blood smears, cytology, microscopy and urinalysis. The write ups are designed to assess the students' understanding of the techniques they are performing in class.
