The reproductive performance of a ewe flock can be measured in terms of the proportion ofewes exposed to the ram that subsequently produce lambs (fertility) and the litter size of iwes lambing (prolificacy). Both fertility andprolificacy oi ewes improve as the number of ova shed increases from 1 to 3 (Robinson and Scaramuzzi 1986). The number of ova shed by a cycling ewe can be influenced by plane oi nuirition (Coop 1966), although mechanisms controlling nutritional effects on ovulation rate are unclear. However, interest has focussed on metabolic hormones, such as insulin, known to be influenced by diet (Cox et al. 1987). There is evidence of a synergistic role for insulin in the gonadotrophin-mediated stimulation of steroidogenesis in cultured ovarian granulosa cells (e.g., Veldhuis and Demers i985). Furthermore, malnutrition in pigs reduced both ovulation rate and plasma insulin Can. J. Anim. Sci. Tlz (Mar. 1991) Mots cles: Insuline, ovins, fertilit6, prolificit6 241 concentrations (Flowers et al' 1989)' However, following nutritional flushing, both ovulation rate and plasma insulin were increased (Flowers et al. 1989). Recently, insulin treatment has elevated ovulation rate in swine (Cox et al. 1987)' Further, the observed effect appeared to be independent of changes in serum concentrationi of gonadotrophins, suggesting a direct effect of insulin on ovarian function' Whether insulin treatment has any effect on the endocrine status or ovarian function in ewes has not been determined. The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of insulin injections, administered during the period encompassing ovarian folli-cular development. on the fertility and prolificacy of ewes. In September, sponges rmpregnated with 60 mg medroxy-progesterone acetate fferamx, Tuco"Products, Ora-ngeville, ON) were placed intravaginally in 96 mixed-parity Suffolk ewes weighing 89.5 t 1.0 kg (mean + SE) for 14 d'

This suggestion is supported by there being no observed effect of insulin on the interval between sponge removal and breeding (Table 1). It is reasonable to suggest that the granulosa cells of the ovine ovary would respond to the stimulatory effects of insulin in a manner similar to those of the porcine ovary. However, the lack of effect on the reproductive performance noted in the present experiment suggests that such a stimulation did not occur. A variable response to exogenous insulin has been observed in pigs, with insulin either increasing ovulation rate (Cox et al. 1987) or having no effect (Kirkpatrick et al. 1967). The difference in response was attributed to the dose of insulin, since in the study by Kirkpatrick et al. (1967) no effect on blood glucose concentration was observed. In contrast, Cox et al. (1987) noted a chronic reduction in blood glucose concentration throughout the treatment period suggesting a prolonged hyperinsulinemia. In the present study, the period of decreased blood glucose and increased insulin concentrations was approximately 12 h. Therefore, it is possible that the duration of hyperinsulinemia was inadequate to result in ovarian stimulation. However, indications of overt hypoglycemia in some ewes militate against the use of a higher insulin dose. In conclusion, the results ofthe present study indicate that the administration of insulin during the period of follicular growth does not influence the reproductive performance of ewes !O.06a ' O.06b t6.6+4.'.l <o 1+5 R 6.1 t We wish to thank the staff of the campus sheep facility for their assistance in the management of the ewes.
