36 INSTITUTE OF ANIMAL SCIENCES: care of national animal genetic resources Conservation of Lithuanian animals breeds launched in 1994: minimal size herds were formed at the Institute with further preventing of complete extinction of breeds 2008: Genetic Resources Coordinating Centre of national farm animal established at the Institute of Animal Science farm animal conservation program with the aim to maintain small populations of national breeds as purebred Protection in-situ and ex-situ of genetic resources of national farm animals: 3 purebreds of cows (113), purebreds of Lithuanian indigenous wattle pigs and old genotype Lithuanian White pigs (320), local sheep's (154), Samogitian horse breed (56), local goose (217)
