Animal Science: It s a Zoo Best Practices to Minimize Risk in the Animal Science Classroom Amanda Thomson, Middletown High School August 23, 2016
Some Recent Headlines: Have any of your programs come under scrutiny?
Today s Objectives: Discuss Industry Standards that can be used to design animal care programs Share classroom & lab management best practices
Part I: Industry Resources
Animal Welfare Act Enforced by APHIS of USDA. Technically, schools are considered a Research Facility: School Laboratories: Elementary, secondary, and all other schools below the college level are by law exempt from registration. BUT: Striving to achieve these minimum standards of can help with facility design, set up, and animal care. Prepares students to work in industry *Beware an open campus :schools with open access to animals OR that charge $ may need to register as an Exhibitor
THe GUides: Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals (NRC) Guide for the Care & Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching (Federation of Animal Science Societies) Used by AALAC as the Primary Standards to evaluate animal care & use programs
CT Department of Agriculture Regulations for licensed Pet Facilities including: Pet Shops Boarding/Training Facilities Groomers Commercial Kennels Ag Centers are exempt from licensing unless we offer these services commercially However, regulations are helpful references; indicate everything from required grooming equipment to height/type of kennel fencing. Contact Animal Control division for more info
PIJAC Publish Animal Care Guidelines Geared towards retail pet industry Especially useful for species not addressed in the Guides
Certified Humane Dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals in food production from birth to slaughter Contact Devon O Keefe or visit for more info.
Animal Assisted Activities and Therapies Consider integration of registered Pet Partners programs Educational & experiential value for students, provides insurance, covers multiple species
Part II: Best Practices
Lesson 1: Paperwork! Document where & when your animals came! Your district may have donation forms Foster Care contracts for animal placement with students Keep an animal care/lab log Identify which students performed which tasks Record what was done with animals when Keep health records, especially regarding vaccines Consult your local veterinarian for species-appropriate preventative health programs, including: Vaccines Health Screenings
LEsson 2: Storage A place for everything, and everything in it s place! All feed, bedding stored off the floor Sealed/closed containers (no open bags) Liquids stored below feed Clear labels If storing pharmaceuticals, must be in a fridge labeled not for food consumption
COmpare these two feed storage areas:
LEsson 3: Facilities HVAC requirements from the Guides Facilities must be maintained No porous surfaces/sharp edges Posted emergency contact info Enclosures cleaned every 24 hours Consider a double fence Garbage/manure out every day! I love my NestCam! :)
LEsson 4: Managing Students Clear expectations for behavior & work ethic Consistent expectations regarding PPE in animal labs Change of clothes, lab coat, coveralls Change of shoes/boots or shoe covers Eye protection/gloves (match industry standard?) Clear assignments & records of student tasks Training/supervision
Moving forward: Incorporate enrichment into animal care program Create written SOP s/best Practices for animal care, citing industry guidelines Involve students, stakeholders in discussion Consult with local veterinarian, school risk management personnel
Questions/Comments? Feel free to contact me: Thank you and have a great school year!
