2 Welcome to Zoo Med Laboratories Here at Zoo Med, animals are our passion, and for over 40 years we have made it our mission to supply the very best in exotic pet foods, reptile products, and reptile habitats. As a company made up of reptile hobbyists, we strive to provide the supplies and knowledge needed to successfully care for reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and other exotic pets to keep them happy and healthy. The reptile supplies, accessories, and tools we manufacture are first tested at our facilities on the large collection of reptiles & aquarium fish we house at Zoo Med. Many of us have desk pets, and many of those desks are wedged into places in-between the 200+ terrariums, aquariums, paludariums, and other habitats at our facility. Inside our Animal Room, we house over 90 species ranging from chameleons, geckos, skinks, frogs, fish, newts, tarantulas, and beetles. Outside in our Turtle Nirvana Greenhouse, we care for 30 species of turtles and tortoises, several of which are endangered. Zoo Med s Customer Service Team is made up of specialized animal caretakers that personally take care of our incredible collection of pets. Our experienced staff provide customer service over the phone, by and in-person at reptile shows with the knowledge needed to help your animal thrive. We continually spread our knowledge of exotic pet care by working closely with Pets in the Classroom helping more than 15,000 students enjoy a classroom pet. Zoo Med also works closely with pet stores across the nation educating them on reptile care. Lastly, we partner with over 150 zoos nation wide helping with their conservation and preservation efforts. 4 Home to a number of plants and tree dwelling reptiles. Where many mosses and semi-aquatic animals live. Amazon Rising Paludarium at the Shedd Aquarium Chicago, Illinois Occupied by plants, fish, invertebrates and semiaquatic animals. A Paludarium is half Terrarium and half Aquarium that mimics wildlife habitats found along the banks of rivers, streams and other sources of water. Many plants, reptiles, fish, invertebrates and amphibians call these areas home. 4

5 STEP 1 1. PREPARE THE TANK Clean the inside of the tank with warm H2O. Choose a suitable substrate. Rinse substrate throroughly before placing in tank. STEP 5 5. WATER, AQUATIC PLANTS Add your water and aquatic plants. Always use AQUAPURE water conditioner. STEP 2 2. PALUDARIUM PLATFORM Assemble shelf/land structure. Make sure the support legs are planted securely and level. STEP 3 STEP 6 6. ADD CRITTERS! Crabs Frogs Shrimp Geckos Fish Anoles 3. ADD FILTER AND HEATER Mount filter in an easy to access location. Position spray bar for optimal water flow. Alternatively, a hose can be attached to create a waterfall (see waterfall If using the Paludarium Heater, position it near filter oulet for even heating. STEP 4 4. ADD CAGE FURNITURE AND PLANTS Select appropriate substrate for land feature, for live plants use Reptisoil/ Sphagnum Moss. In efforts to minimize environmental impact and increase efficiency, all glass terrarium manufacturing operations have been moved from overseas to Zoo Med s headquarters in California. 27 THERMOREGULATION What is Thermoregulation? The body temperature of most reptiles is influenced by the outside environmental temperature. This means that to control their body temperature, the animal must move to a warmer or cooler location. Your pet will innately look for these temperature differences so it is important to provide them with a thermal gradient within their terrarium. HEATING Thermal Gradients Providing a heat gradient within your enclosure allows your pet to thermoregulate by choosing what temperature it s most comfortable in. Your thermal gradient can be horizontal or vertical depending on your pet and their terrarium. Measuring Temperature Placing heat lamps and/or heat strips on one side of the terrarium will naturally create this gradient but don t guess the temperatures! Use a thermometer(s) to measure the temperature in each area of the enclosure. Basking Spots An important feature to remember when setting up a thermal gradient is the Basking Site. This designated area on the warm side of the habitat is generally the hottest area your pet can access. It should be a place that is easy for your pet to get to and a comfortable place to rest as many reptiles may spend a significant part of their day basking and soaking up the heat. Setting up a basking site can simply be done by placing a Basking Spot Lamp, Halogen, Powersun, or other reflector type lamp over one side of the habitat. For arboreal lizards, this should be over a comfortable perching branch; for aquatic turtles, place the lamp over a dock or land area; for tortoises, basking is usually done in an open, flat area in the habitat. 27

30 UVB FOR REPTILES What Is UVB? UVB is part of the sun s natural light spectrum. Most reptiles require exposure to UVB to produce vitamin D3, which is essential in order for them to use the calcium from their diet. The sun provides UVB in nature, however, in your home you will need to provide UVB by using specialty lighting designed for reptiles. 30LIGHTING What is the UV Index (UVI)? The UV Index (UVI) is a measure of UV radiation. In this Index, the wavelengths measured are those that contribute most to a reptile s ability to manufacture their own vitamin D3. This is important because not all UVB wavelengths are equal in their ability to promote vitamin D synthesis. What are Ferguson Zones? Dr. Ferguson, a renowned herpetologist and researcher, observed the daytime activities of many different reptile species and recorded the UV Index they were found in. Over time and with the contributions of many other dedicated researchers, these observations and recordings have been used to create the Ferguson Zones we use today. What Zone Should My Animal Have? Every habitat should provide a photo gradient with zones that go all the way down to 0 UVI, which allows animals to photoregulate, or control their exposure to UVB. The upper zone limit should be based on your animal s unique natural basking behavior. How to use these charts: 1. Determine what zone best describes your pet. 2. Consider the size of your enclosure. These measurements should be taken from the face of the lamp to the basking site. 3. Choose a lamp that can provide the correct zone at your pet s basking site. 4. Remember to make sure that there is a gradient of light all the way down to 0 UVI allowing your pet to retreat. 5. Keep in mind that some reflectors may increase a lamp s output and screens may reduce the UVB that reaches your pet. To know precise UVI, you can use a UV Index Meter (ST-7).

52 truman Zoo Med s Sulcata Tortoise When Zoo Med s President, Gary Bagnall, adopted an adult male Sulcata Tortoise named Truman over 15 years ago, he was well aware of what he was getting into. Truman was nearly 130 pounds when he traveled across the country from Florida to California in the back of our iconic Zoo Med Van, and this wasn t his first long trip. Truman was actually born in Africa and imported as a baby nearly 30 years before! When the previous caretaker offered him for adoption, he found himself on his way to a tortoise haven in sunny California. Truman s yard is over 1,550 square feet and consists of two levels. On the upper level, there is a shallow pond for Truman to drink and bathe in as he wishes. A structure along the back wall of the enclosure ensures that shade is always available (although hardly necessary with the mild temperatures in San Luis Obispo). Two ramps lead from the upper to lower level where Truman s house provides thermostatically controlled heat throughout the year. The entire enclosure is planted with grasses, hibiscus, mulberry, and other tortoise safe vegetation. An automatic irrigation system waters the lawn and fills the pond daily. Truman enjoys all of the creature comforts of his home. Although the outside temperatures here are generally quite mild, it is important to provide a heated shelter for nighttime and winter months. To ensure that Truman is able to stay warm enough, the walls and roof are insulated and the floor is slightly elevated from the ground. A ramp leads to the doorway that has rubber flaps which help to reduce heat loss while making it easy for Truman to enter and exit. Heat is provided by three Zoo Med ReptiTherm Habitat Heaters. One is secured to the floor of the house and two are mounted to the walls. The heater on the floor is controlled by a timer, which automatically turns the heater on in the evening and off in the morning. The heaters on the wall are thermostatically controlled and set to turn on if the temperature in the house falls below 75 degrees. 52

When I got her, she was little, she was very malnourished, and she had not been kept under a heat lamp or UVB. Her shell was soft, not rigid. The hardest part was persuading her to let me keep insects in the house. Being the first reptile, I learned a lot as time passed. The scaled creatures have taught me so much, and they furthered my interest and pushed me to earn a degree in biology, and I am currently working toward getting into veterinary school. Jonah would never grow and her soft shell woudn t go away. I was doing all the right things as I had a thriving turtle named Squirt as well. I was also a Veterinary Technician at the time and took her to the vet often. I tried everything to make her soft shell go away and for her to grow. I just couldn t make it happen using medication, calcium powder, vet visits, better lighting, everything from A to Y, until I got to Z!!! I went to Repticon here in Gwinnet County, GA with some friends as we also have a snake. 75 IMPORTANCE OF HUMIDITY Humidity is the amount of water vapor or moisture in the air. For reptiles that are adapted to live in a particular part of the world, humidity plays a vital role in the health of the skin, eyes, respiratory tract and more. Humidity requirements vary greatly from species to species, which is why knowing your species requirements is essential. Tropical Humidity % Generally, tropical species have a moderate to high humidity requirement because the humidity is naturally high in their native habitats. If kept at too low of a humidity level, tropical species may experience difficulty shedding, dry eyes, general dehydration, and respiratory problems. When maintaining tropical habitats with high humidity, it is also important to consider air flow and circulation. A tropical habitat that does not account for air circulation is more likely to have algae, mold, and mildew growth. To prevent this from happening in a terrarium, make sure that there is adequate air flow through the habitat, spot clean waste regularly, and turn over moist substrates to introduce oxygen to lower substrate levels.for animals that require very moist substrate or high humidity, there should also be areas available that are a little drier where animals can go to regulate and dry out if necessary. Constant exposure to wet conditions without an opportunity to dry out can lead to bacterial and fungal infections of the skin and respiratory tract. Desert Humidity - BELOW 40% Many desert species have a relatively low humidity level. Many desert species spend time underground, in burrows, or other areas that may be more moist than the general humidity of the habitat. To recreate this in a terrarium, micro-climates can be established giving pets a humid retreat similar to the underground homes and hides they have access to in the wild. These humid micro-climates or humidity hides can help desert species with shedding, proper shell growth (tortoises) and eye problems that can come with a very dry climate. Just as monitoring temperature is essential for setting up a thermal gradient in a reptile habitat, monitoring humidity levels is important for establishing proper humidity levels. Generally, humidity is higher closest to dampened substrate or items and is lowest near heat lamps. If using automatic humidity devices, it is a good idea to use them along with a controller. 75

There are many ways to understand and appreciate the value insects provide. They are great decomposers: taking in decaying matter and supplementing soils with their waste and humic substances. They also pollinate the majority of the world s plants (about 30% of the world s crops and 90% of the world s plants depend on bees for pollination), help naturally control pests (lady bugs and praying mantids), are a food source for both people and animals, and have religious (Egypt) and symbolic meaning (China). Someday, appreciation for and keeping of insects will be added to the long list of things China invented that we take for granted (like paper, gunpowder, alcohol, the compass, etc.). Crickets, cicadas, and grasshoppers are some of the oldest recorded singing pets kept in imperial China with a tradition that goes back thousands of years. Insect pets were available to royalty and commoners alike, and were usually collected in the wild during autumn, where they were valued for representing bravery and resurrection through their short and easily observed lifecycle. While keeping insects as pets has not yet reached the popularity it has in China, it is steadily gaining traction in the West. Insects are used as a staple teaching tool in schools when demonstrating life cycle stages (often butterflies or praying mantids) and are a great asset to instill responsibility in young keepers.
