Event manager welcome Karen de Wit I LOVE NZDAC!! Of course, it s much more fun just turning up, (and not doing the work) but this year it s our turn, so on behalf of all Zone 3 people, I would like to welcome you to NZDAC 2013 at Bulls. We hope that the event will be an enjoy-a-bull experience for all involved! Some of you have come a long way and will no doubt take the opportunity to stay in the area, or explore further a-field we hope your adventure goes well. Please feel free to drop into any of our local Clubs, you will be made welcome. Thank you everyone who has helped make this event possible which is just about everyone here!! However, an event like this isn t organised overnight!! A number of local people have thought about, and worked on, the NZDAC experience for a year or so! Without these volunteers, many of whom do not even compete in agility, such an event would be impossible to run. Thanks also to our Judges who are, of course, essential. They have designed great courses, and will stand and judge you for hours at a time please be nice to them. This includes not mucking around when you are in the ring!! A big thank you to our sponsors, to our principle sponsor Eukanuba, and to all the others who have come together to ensure EVERY class is sponsored that is unsurpass-abull!! One of the things we have no control over is the weather you were warned to bring raincoats and gumboots so I hope you did! It s our turn for a sunny NZDAC, but if the sun is shy, and the rain is not, we hope that you will grin and bear it under your umbrella, put your best gumboot forward, raise your gloved hand when you see a need, and be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there!! Finally, we hope you will have fun in the ring for those of you who win it will be an unforget-a-bull experience!! For everyone else you tried hard, and if it doesn t go well (or turns to bull-shit!) just remember there is only ever one winner but you can still be happy with your dog and how you went! Be considerate of others, give your dogs a pat on the head, and your fellow competitors a pat on the back, and don t forget to smile at the volunteers they might smile back!!!! NZDAC

Message from NZKC President - Owen Dance As another NZDAC approaches I want to take this opportunity to express on behalf of all NZKC members the admiration we feel for the time and effort that those of you in the Agility discipline put in to your sport. The range of activities you pack into your sport is dazzling, between your triple events, flygility, inter-zone and inter-club competitions, champ of champ, AD, ADX the list seems endless and makes Breed showing look pretty straightforward by comparison. In fact I may as well confess that there was brief period early in my police career when I considered applying to become a dog handler. I know now that had I applied they wouldn t have even considered me and I would have been bitterly disappointed and very offended at that time. Forty years on and with the experience of having owned many illdisciplined dogs in that time I know myself well enough to know that I simply don t have the patience or skill to teach a dog how to do anything, and never have. So I salute you for the abilities you have and for the skill you display in getting yourselves and your dogs to this level of competition. I wish you all a most enjoyable time at NZDAC and of course I wish you all the very best of luck. I want to also express my thanks and the thanks of Executive Council to the organisers and the judges without whom no event can happen. Apart from the merits of Agility as a sport in itself, it provides the sort of spectator appeal and excitement that can only be good for the whole of the NZKC so NZDAC is particularly valuable in the Club s efforts to promote itself and the whole dog world among the community at large. On all sorts of levels then, I take my hat off to you and I thank you and of course our very generous sponsors Eukanuba. Let the competition begin! NZDAC

25 year Anniversary. The very first NDOA was held in Henderson Auckland and they offered Starters Jumpers (52 entries) and Open agility (58 entries). The following year (25 years ago) the event was held for the first time in Zone 3. The first Zone 3 NDOA with agility was held in Palmerston North, 25 years ago. Jan Voss was the show manager and Barry Monaghan ran her dog, Storm. This year we will commemorate that milestone with a cake made specially by Kathryn Bayne. The Town of Bulls. The town of Bulls is named after James Bull, a carpenter from London. In 1858 he went off with long time mate Dick Howard who had tendered to build a new ferry house and hotel for Thomas Scott at the mouth of the Rangitikei River. Shortly after this was finished he found a magnificent forest of Totara trees on the banks of the Rangitikei River. He immediately saw the prospects of launching a timber mill to supply timber to the local settlers. Around the same time James leased 5 acres of land from Captain Daniell to set up a general store in 1859, the shop was situated on High Street where the RSA is currently located. By 1862 the store had also become the local Post Office with a liquor sales outlet included. James built the Bulls courthouse, the Rangitikei Hotel, the Criterion Hotel and the Coach and Horse Hotel. James also operated a carrier business between Bulls and Wanganui which grew out of his timber cartage operation. James also owned a Stables and wheelwrights workshop in Criterion Street, the Rangitikei Hotel, for a period, and the Rangitikei Brewery. James was a great citizen of the growing township so it was inevitable that it became known as going to Bull s. It was not until 1872 that the name of Bulls was officially accepted by the Post Office. Until then it had various names, Daniells Bush, Middle Rangitikei, Clifton, Taumaihi and Bulltown. James was a generous donor to the town including land for the hospital and town hall. He dies in England at the age of 89 NZDAC

Judges profiles Allan Rohde Pukekohe I have been involved in Dog Sports for almost 20 years now starting with the Wairarapa Dog Obedience Club and later moving to Counties Dog Training Club. Although I enjoy competing and doing well, I also like being involved in all aspects of dog sports from instructing and judging through to committee work at both club and national level. This will be my third time in succession that I have been asked to judge at the Zone 3 NZDAC/NDTA and I still consider it an honour to be asked. I just hope that this time round the conditions are a little more conducive to creating the great spectacle the NZDAC should be. I hope my courses will provide the appropriate challenges and that competitors find them enjoyable to run. although some may debate that is a benefit. I am fortunate that my family also shares my enjoyment of dog sports which does have the benefit that there is always someone available to run my dogs when I am judging. It also means the long drives to and from competitions are not lonely ones If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? Peruvian Inca Orchid They are calm and devoted to their owners. They are not usually friendly with strangers but they are not aggressive with them either. And they have a Kiss Spot on their head and you know I like my Kiss. Which country would you like to judge in and why? England it would be real interesting to judge so many top quality handler/dog combinations What do you do when you are not doing dogs? On the rare occasions that I am not doing dogs I will be catching up on chores around home.. My favourite location in New Zealand is... Home It seems that whenever we travel away it is with the dogs. I now enjoy the chance to just stay at home and do something not involving the dogs. The things I enjoy most about judging agility are... I enjoy setting courses that hopefully are challenging and enjoyable for competitors to run. I get a real buzz when a competitor has a great run on one of my courses. NZDAC

Bernadette Thompson Ashburton If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? I d be a Jack Russell, sturdy, feisty and able to enjoy a physical outdoor life, but small and charismatic enough to worm my way into people s hearts so I could be spoilt and pampered. Which country would you like to judge in and why? Singapore. I have a strong interest in obedience as well as agility and I have heard that Singapore has some tests that combine the two. I would love to experience this. What do you do when you are not doing dogs? I teach in a high school, practising my clicker training on the students. Well, actually I teach English as a second language to lovely young people from interesting countries from all around the world. I also try and spend some time with my lively little grandchildren. My favourite location in New Zealand is... Nelson. It has the best of all worlds: climate, beach, rivers, hills and bush. The things I enjoy most about judging agility are.. the buzz and hype of the competition and especially seeing good dogs and handlers make a challenging course look easy. Beth Oliver Waipawa I am looking forward to judging at the 2013 NZDAC, especially the Champ of Champs. I have a few ideas and can t wait to try them out on unsuspecting souls around the country. I have been involved with agility for 20 years now and even though I don t run a dog anymore I am involved with instructing and am the current president of the best orange club in the country. I have been asked to write a profile and answer the following questions so here goes: If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? This was easy; I would be a designer dog. A labradoodle Labrador for water, hunting and food, Poodle for fun, laughs and home life. Which country would you like to judge in and why? If I could go by sea (I don t do flying) I would like to judge in England as I would like to see how they manage such huge classes and shows. What do you do when you are not doing dogs? For work I ve been involved with the apple industry for 17 years now. First as a Shift Manager in a packhouse NZDAC

until 2009 where I became full time on an orchard as a Foreman. I run the Spray program; also supervise a thinning and picking gang, prune trees and do the compliance side as well. For play I enjoy home life, fishing and travelling with my partner Chris, reading and judging. My favourite location in New Zealand is... All the South Island which we intend to travel around in 7 years and the Coromandel for its outstanding fishing! The things I enjoy most about judging agility are... Watching a handler and dog absolutely nail any course that you put up - pure magic! I hope everyone enjoys the 2013 NZDAC and I look forward to seeing you all in the ring. Danny Gotlieb Lower Hutt Hello Fellow Competitors I have been involved in Dog Training for nearly 20 Years training initially in Obedience then switching to Agility which is my chosen personal sport. I attend most of the North Island shows with my partner and three highly competitive children all of which currently attempt agility also, with our two current dogs, Miley (Border collie) and Tao (Papillion) I have been asked to answer a few questions in my profile for this event. If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? I think I would like to either be a Border collie a Sheltie or a Papillion, not fussed as long as they had attitude. Which country would you like to Judge in and why? I would love to judge in USA or the UK as there is some pretty awesome dogs and handlers in those places. What do you do when you are not doing dogs? I live in Lower Hutt City and work as a Senior Contracts Coordinator in one of New Zealand s leading Fire and Security Door Manufacturing companies, supplying components and technical solutions to the construction industry in New Zealand and the South Pacific Area. Besides obviously working most of the time, when time permits I currently am an active Junior Cricket coach, Junior Soccer supporter with my sons and when time permits attend my daughters many dance recitals of Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop and Jazz competitions. My Favourite location in NZ is: I m from the North Island but one of my favourite places in NZ is Queenstown - Wanaka areas as its amazing scenery down there as you get a real peaceful feel of the rugged southern regions in our great country The things I most enjoy about judging agility are: I have been lucky enough to travel throughout New Zealand over the last 9 Years being an Agility Judge and have been hosted by clubs over both North and South Islands; this gives such a broad range of handlers and dogs to judge which I find very rewarding in my judging and am thankful for the opportunities and hospitality offered by all clubs I have been asked to judge for. NZDAC

I m feel very privileged as a person to again be invited to Judge at our National prestigious championship event for Agility, I look forward to designing some challenging courses and wish good luck to you all in this upcoming event, enjoy your courses and have a great time competing, I look forward to seeing you all out there Dyson Beasley Rotorua Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to the NZDAC Committee for inviting me to Judge this weekend. I take it as a privilege to be asked and I am looking forward to seeing some great runs by some of the best dogs and handlers in the country at all levels. Me personally I have been in the dog world for almost 20 years now, doing Obedience and Agility over that time. I now only dedicate my time to Agility for a number of reasons. My love for the sport meant I wanted to be the best I can be so wanted to concentrate on Agility alone. We have 9 dogs at home, 8 Border Collies and 1 Papillion, he will be my very first Mini or Micro dog which I will compete with in the future. Out of the 9 dogs we have 5 that are competing, our Reeson which hopefully will be competing by the time you read this and little Atom who will not be far off the other 2 have been retired from working but both are Obedience Champions. I have been asked to answer a few questions so here they are: If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? I think I would be or like to be a Border as they are very active and try to do their best in whatever type of work they are doing. Which country would you like to Judge in and why? I think I would like to Judge in the UK as some of the best handlers and dogs come from there, although the classes are huge the experience would still be amazing. What do you do when you are not doing dogs? That is easy, when I am not going to a Show or training during the week I am at work, catching up on things around home or relaxing watching a movie with my lovely Paula at home. My Favourite location in NZ is: At home in Waikite Valley on our little bit of paradise The things I most enjoy about judging agility are: Watching people enjoy working their dogs at all levels. That most people enjoy being challenged in a course and trying new things or pushing the boundaries to keep progressing as a team, then watching them improve in the future because they go away and work on some of the things they didn t get quite right on the day. Good luck to everybody over the weekend, enjoy your time with your dogs and catching up with friends. NZDAC

Keri Neilson Hamilton If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? I think I would be a border terrier. I can be quite stubborn and I am a bit of a talker, but I make a pretty good companion and I love my family. Which country would you like to judge in and why? I think it would be really interesting judging in Europe. It would be fun to see how they handled the kiwi style of course, and it would be great for the fitness trying to judge all those running contacts! What do you do when you are not doing dogs? I like hanging out with friends and family, reading and movies. I feel guilty exercising without my four dogs so most of my walking or running involves taking them to the river, lake or beach. In my work life I work for Waikato Regional Council as an Environmental Manager and I am pretty passionate about lakes and wetlands! My favourite location in New Zealand is... I have so many favourites, but it s hard to beat Taupo. There s so much to do there and I have tonnes of good memories camping at the holiday park as a child. Great Barrier Island is also amazing. I worked there two months every summer for nine years and I never got tired of those beaches. The things I enjoy most about judging agility are... My favourite part is seeing people delighted with their dogs and seeing dogs so happy to be having good times with their handler. I also enjoy designing courses and then seeing them run how I hoped they would be. And even better when they are run really well using moves I had not even thought of! Lyn Sayers Taupo Lyn Sayers started Agility with the family pet Jasper, a Miniature Schnauzer. Actually owning a dog long after his children had flown the coup was something of an accident, as was finding out about the addictive effect of Dog Agility. Now, 14 years on and a few Schnauzers later, Lyn is retired from full time employment and living on a five hectare property just north of Taupo. He has been judging all levels of Agility in New Zealand since 2002 and has judged in Australia on a number of occasions. Lyn's involvement in the sport is not restricted to competing and officiating. He is currently president and trainer at the local Dog Training Club in his new home town and served as Chairman of the Agility Committee and four years as an Executive councillor on the NZKC. Lyn and partner Christine recently formed a company trading in various products and services related to Agility and share a common dream to innovate rather than imitate new NZDAC

and safer agility equipment. If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? I think I would like to be a Schnauzer (of course) and live with Christine as she does such nice haircuts Which country would you like to judge in and why? I like judging in Australia but I guess since my son lives in England that would be a nice place to go next. What do you do when you are not doing dogs? Mostly I do Dog equipment but I guess that's still "Dogs" but I do like going to the movies at least once a week. My favourite location in New Zealand is... Since I am an expatriate South Islander I really enjoyed Reefton and just recently went to Gordon Spratt Reserve at Papamoa Beach - beautiful surface to compete on. The things I enjoy most about judging agility are... Watching how dog and handler teams progress and improve. Pet hate is seeing some folk make the same mistakes with each successive dog. Teresa Ford Christchurch Third time lucky? Not sure about that, but this is the third time I have judged at the now NZDAC. Once again, life continues and not much has changed to be honest (but I keep getting older!!) I am still Nelson born and breed way back in the mid 70 s. I have lived in Christchurch for 6 1/2 years now. My family has changed only by adding a cat to the mix Howie Morenz (for any ice hockey know-it-alls, he is a famous ice hockey player, see below as to why that is important!!) Our family consists of myself and my partner Vince who is in the NZ Ice Blacks Team (see cat comment above!). They travelled away for a month in April to the Czech Republic and Turkey for the World Champs and came home with silver very proud. Kendra is 11 and runs our border collie Cassie who is 5 years old. Spencer is 3 and loves getting on the ice. He already has his own skates, gloves, helmet and ice hockey sticks! He had his first run this year with Cassie in a kids give it a go agility show we held in Christchurch. Our dogs:- AgCh Luke Springer Spaniel x Large Munsterlander (15 1/2 years old and in his well earned retirement). AgCh Lace BC (10 ½ years old and recently retired this year) and Cassie BC (5 years old) We were asked to answer the following questions, so here we go!! If you were a dog, what kind of dog would you be and why? A poodle, cause I love my hair being done. Which country would you like to judge in and why? Canada (cause that s where my partner is from and during winter most shows are indoors!!!) and any English speaking country. What do you do when you are not doing dogs? Spending time with my family, being a taxi driver for my daughter with swimming, dog agility and netball. I also play netball. Sitting in cold ice hockey rinks watch Vince play or skating around with Spencer for 2 hours NZDAC

My favourite location in New Zealand is... Nelson my home town! The things I enjoy most about judging agility are... Catching up with GREAT friends and making new friends throughout New Zealand we really are a great country and awesome people I wish you all the very best for the weekend. Run hard, but most of all, have fun! Thank you to Charlies for providing the water for our Judges and Scribes NZDAC

NZDAC Games Rules. SNOOKER The aim is to collect as many points as possible in the opening sequence and then to complete the closing sequence without faults or refusals within the time allowed. The course comprises three red jumps and 6 other colour obstacles numbered 2-7. Opening Sequence What you have to do: you will start on the dummy jump that s has been designated the start. do a red jump, followed by any colour obstacle, then do a different red jump, followed by any colour obstacle, then do the last red jump, followed by any colour obstacle. If things go wrong: If a red jump is knocked down, do not do a colour, but take another red jump. If the last red jump is knocked down you must proceed to the closing sequence. If when doing a colour, there is a fault, the colour is not scored. Do not repeat it, move onto the next red jump. If you perform the same red jump twice, scoring stops, go to the finish jump. If you do a red jump then another red jump without doing a colour in between, scoring stops, go to the finish jump. If you do two colours one after the other, scoring stops, go to the finish jump. Other rules for the opening sequence In the opening sequence colours and red jumps may be taken from any direction. There are no refusals. The dog must complete the obstacle once presented with it before continuing. Coloured obstacles can be combination obstacles. The judge will define the direction for such combinations which may be different in the opening and closing sequence. Displaced obstacles are not replaced during the round so that a displaced coloured obstacle will result in the inability of the combination to complete the closing sequence successfully Closing Sequence What you have to do: At the completion of the opening sequence, the handler must direct the dog to attempt each of the colour obstacles in sequence from 2 to 7, and then take the finish jump. If things go wrong: If you get a refusal, scoring stops, go to the finish jump. If you get a fault, scoring stops, go to the finish jump. If your dogs does the wrong course, scoring stops, go to the finish jump. You take longer than the course time and the horn sounds, scoring stops, go to the finish jump. Qualification Certificates Qualification Certificates will be awarded to the dogs which attain 10 points plus 27 points in the closing sequence. NZDAC

GAMBLERS Gamblers is a game with two parts The points accumulation period (PAP), and the Gamble. The aim is to collect as many points as possible in the opening sequence and then to complete the gamble successfully within the time given. During the PAP the handler creates their own course accumulating as many points as possible in 30 seconds. The Gamble is a distance challenge during which, the handler stays behind the line while the dog negotiates three obstacles. Points Accumulation Period What you have to do: you will start on the dummy jump that s has been designated the start. complete obstacles as desired until the horns sounds after 30 seconds Other rules for the PAP Every obstacle correctly negotiated earns points: - Jumps - 1pt,Tunnels, Spread Jumps, Long jump & hoop, - 3pts, Contact Obstacles or 6 weave poles - 5 pts, Weave (12 poles) and combination obstacles - 7pts Obstacles can be performed from any direction, with the exception of unidirectional obstacles. Obstacles are only scored twice. Obstacles may not be taken back to back except in the event of a missed contact. If the dog misses a contact the dog may be directed to redo the obstacle immediately to score it. Refusals are not judged. You may perform gamble obstacles during the PAP Poles are not replaced during the round so that when a pole is knocked that jump is not worth any points should it be negotiated later in the run Gamble There will be a gamble line over which the handler must not step. If the Handler puts a foot into the handler restriction area no points will be received for the gamble. There will be 3 obstacles at a max distance from the gamble line of 3m. You will have 10 seconds to perform the gamble. First obstacle: 2pts, Second obstacle:4pts, Third obstacle: 6pts. The total gamble is 12pts. What you have to do: When the horn sounds to end of the PAP, the handler must direct the dog to attempt the gamble without crossing the gamble line. If things go wrong: If you get a fault, scoring stops, go to the finish obstacle. If your dogs does the wrong course, scoring stops, go to the finish obstacle. You take longer than the course time and the horn sounds, scoring stops, go to the finish obstacle. Other rules for the gamble The dog will not be penalised for negotiating (non gamble) obstacles when to the start of the gamble; however none of those obstacles negotiated will be scored. The timer is set on the last obstacle of the gamble Refusals are not judged. Defining the class winner The winner of a Gamblers Class is the dog which has the highest total points. In the event of a tie, the dog with the fastest time is declared the winner. Qualification Certificates Qualification Certificates will be awarded to the dogs which collect at least 20 points in the PAP and successfully complete the gamble NZDAC

InterZone teams Zone 1 Starters Nicole Beaumont and Robbie JD, FDX Robbie 7 years Huntaway x Heading Dog Hi, my name is Nicole Beaumont and I live on a dairy/beef farm in Pukekohe with an assortment of farm animal and 5 dogs 2 miniature schnauzers who I used to breed show, 2 heading dogs one of whom is retired, and a 3 year old who has recently won into Intermediate/Seniors. Robbie is a tricolour Huntaway x heading dog and as well as agility he also does Flygility and competes in obedience working in Test B. Robbie loves helping out on the farm moving the stock, making sure the pigs stay in the pen when I clean them out, overseeing the feeding of the calves and anything else that needs to be done. He is a very easy dog to live with and if I drop anything he is quick to pick it up. He just wants to help with whatever he can, including carrying buckets for me. Novice Allan Harrison and Little Miss Sunline Jewel 5 NZ Heading Dog Jewel is a 5 year old New Zealand Heading Dog. We chose her name Little Miss Sunline as she was the smallest in the litter and we drew inspiration from a true champion of the turf namely Sunline. Jewel has proven she too can be a champion for at only the age of 3 years old she gained the title of Fly Dog Grand Champion. Jewel has twice won and twice been the runner up for the Chico Memorial Trophy awarded annually for the most points gained in Flygility. I have been involved in agility for over twenty years and I am looking forward to Jewel and I representing Zone 1 and hopefully retaining theagility Zone trophy at this years NZDAC. Good luck to my fellow team members and also the other Zones. Finally we wish everyone safe travels and a fantastic weekend of dog sports. NZDAC

Intermediate Caitlin Frater and Loverslane Betelgeuse ADX JDX Geuse 3 years - Toy Poodle Geuse (said Juice) is a 3 year old Toy Poodle from Loverslane Kennels and is the first dog I have owned myself. I have been competing with him for 18 months now and we have achieved so much in that short amount of time. I started competing in agility in 2004 when I was 5 (I am now almost 15) with a friend s Jack Russell, but from when I was able to walk, I have been doing agility with my parents dogs in the backyard. Since I first started competing, I have run many people s dogs for them, and still do, and absolutely love it. This will be my first time competing in the team and I hope we will help Zone 1 defend the title! Senior Elaine Rohde AGCH, JGRCH, FDCH Aquila Lightning Bolt ADXS Bolt 4 years Border Collie Bolt is a 4 year old black and white Border Collie bred by us at Aquila Kennels from my great little dog AGCH, OBCH, FDCH Windi. Bolt is a Grand Jumpers Champion and needs 4 Agility Challenges to make Grand and a Flygility Champion. Bolt is working in Test B and needs 1 more win to reach Test C. Bolt is an awesome little dog and always tries but she can sulk when things do not go her way, especially when she has to go in the trailer. Bolt s favourite game is hide-n- seek. When she hears ready she lets out this almighty shriek and squeals as she tries to find me. Bolt has a noise obsession and gets very excited at clapping at prize giving. I have finally managed to teach her to sit quietly when the egg beater is on she has even charged at Allan up a ladder while operating a chainsaw. Bolt s highlights include winning jumpers B final in 2011 and becoming the youngest Jumpers Grand Champion and winning Test A at the 2012 Nationals and representing zone 1 in 2012 and winning senior. I am looking forward to the new format and been part of the jumpers team. I wish all the teams best of luck. NZDAC

Zone 2 Starters Jane Webley and Patonshill I am Jet s Rock JD Kaiser 2 years - Dobermann Hi my name is Jane. Kaizer and I belong to Hawke s Bay Dog Training Club in Hastings. I own 3 Dobermans all competing in agility. Ch lee (11), Samson Jnr (7), and my latest edition Kaizer who has just turned 2. Kaizer is an awesome dude. He just loves agility and loves to please in whatever he does. I got the agility bug by wanting to do something different with my Dobermans, so gave agility a go - hence got hooked on the sport. I wish to thank the senior club trainers for passing on their knowledge of the sport to myself and Kaizer. I am looking forward to representing Zone 2 at Bulls this year. GO ZONE 2 Novice Tina Mitchell and Jumpers Champion Lil Devil of Mordor Joy 4 years - Border Collie Hi there all, having played this game since 1996 I have the honour this year of representing Zone Two for the fourth time. The first time way back in 2000 with my first love Sid, then twice with the RobberDog in 2007 and 2008 and now for the first time with my Lil Devil aka Joy. Missy J does have the honour of belonging to a great little club located in the Belgian Shepherd capital of New Zealand The Eastern Bay of Plenty. Belonging to EBOP Dog Obedience Club is no easy thing for a Border Collie; she has to work very hard to earn the Belgians respect - no mean feat I can assure you!! One day when she grows up she hopes to become a Belgian Shepherd Those who know me, understand what a long road it has been for Joy and I to make it to the lofty heights of the Novice ring; 18 months after winning out of Starters, 4 months before her 4th birthday, 2 months prior to team trials, and only one week before attaining her Jumpers Champ title. This being through no fault of her own, merely a twist of fate that she should have had to come live with me LOL! Team trials in Zone Two are always a laid back kick off your shoes kind of affair and this year was no different. An awesome bunch of friends, not a gripe to be heard and in the end, a team and a zone to be proud of as always. I would like to convey my kindest regards to the other zone teams honestly, I do!! Best wishes though go to my Zone Two team mates Becks and Aero, Chels and Shifty and Jane and Kaizer. I hope that everyone here this weekend achieves their personal goals and goes home with the best dog ever. NZDAC

Intermediate Chelsea Marriner and Agility and Jumpers Champion Ohutu Code N Lightening Shift 5 years Border Collie Shift is a 5 year old blue merle Border Collie. He is named after motocross and has a similar attitude to the moto boys go hard or go home. His only clear round as NZDAC last year was in Champion of Champions which he won with a nice run. He is a super cool dog to work though and is always full speed ahead. His other hobby is sheepdog trialling and he s happiest being a workdog. Chelsea has been competing in agility for 14 years now and currently runs a team of 6-7, with a young rookie Mad if you don t keeping her on her toes. Highlights of her agility days include 2010 IFCS World Jumping Champion with Moss, Jumpers Grand Champion with Quest, and any run where the dogs are having fun and working well. Chelsea also enjoys training others and watching them improve and progress. Aside from dogs, watching motocross, doing trail rides and mountain biking are all pretty high on the list of much enjoyment. Senior Rebecca (Becks) Holland and Aero Dynamix Of Mordor ADX.JDX Aero 4 years Border Collie Hi My Name is Becks Holland, I live in Napier, work as a Dog Groomer and belong to the fantastic Hawkes Bay Dog Training Club. I have been competing in Agility for 7 years My Border Collie Aero is Rising 4 years Old in October and everyone that has met her knows what a character she is, such a clown and a goof, but when the question is asked to work she puts her serious face on and gives 110%. Together this is our 2nd time representing Zone 2 with our first time being the starters dog in 2011 in Christchurch and now 2013 the Senior Dog. Aero has only recently returned back to Agility from 7mths off after having a litter of puppies and it s so good being back in the ring together. NZDAC

Zone 3 Starters Carol Galliers and Box of Fluffy Ducks JD FD Meiah - 4 years Huntaway x Heading Dog It all began with dogs approximately 36 years ago with a couple of Pekingese as pets, then I moved onto to keeping Rottweilers. We bought a small Dairy Farm and continually slaved away, myself managing one of the farms on my own while hubby worked in town. My Rottie and Huntaway bitch loved the farm, the Rottie being very steady with the stock. I started breed showing with a Rottweiler, then got my first Large Munsterlander to breed show and joined the Hawera Dog Training Association approximately 13 years ago where Jo Moody had me doing competitive obedience. We managed to achieve CDX and competed in Test B a few times before my Munsterlander (Kim) died. I also took up Agility with my two Large Munsterlanders. My current Munsterlander has her Breed Champion Title, Jumpers Dog, Fly Dog, ADX and Canine Good Citizen Bronze titles. I thought I would try my hand at Flygility, the dogs loved it and now I have two Flygility Dogs. Currently we live on a farmlet are retired and breeding Speckle Park Cattle, plus showing my dogs. I acquired Meiah in 2011, I still have one Large Munsterlander, a Chihuahua X from the pound (Mum s dog, Mums in a retirement home). The last 12 month I acquired an 8 month old, highly strung Catahoula X from the pound, she had a rough start in life. She is my next project for agility. LOL I first saw Meiah advertised on Trade Me as a friendly, 18 month old Huntaway X in the Hawera area. We had a look at her and the first thing she did was jump up on our car and scratched it, she was very friendly and quite chubby. Meiah had been running with the farmbike for a few days on a Dairy Farm and had worn holes in her pads. She originally had been living in town. I took her home on trial, to find she had no manners what so ever and jumped up on everyone and everyone s car. She s also an annoying barker, must be the Huntaway in her. She adores children and always gravitates towards children s pushchairs. Meiah lives on 4 Hectare property, but rarely ventures out there on her own as she has a dislike for all electric fences. She is a quick learner and loves her Flygility & Agility, she can be quite vocal during agility and grumbles running the weaves. Her favourite place is sleeping in my Lazyboy chair, she s a lovely dog and I wouldn t be without her. NZDAC

Novice Penny Nalder and Tjukurpa Coffee N Cream Haze 3.5 years Koolie Hi there, I'm Penny Nalder, and my team dog is Haze. She's a Koolie, which is a breed probably most of you have never heard of :-) They are an Australian working stockdog, which do the same job on stations as our heading dogs do here. I've been hooked on agility now for around... - oh dear, mmm, must be about 17 years! Boy have things changed from when I started! back then we used a push pull kind of method to train weaves, and I thought the best way go get control over my dog was to slow her down. Damn, that was a mistake! Each dog I have run, I've improved my handling and training, and made different mistakes. :-p I started with Welsh Springers, and ran 3 of them before I had to admit they were never going to be able to outrun a BC, no matter how they tried, and changed breeds to the Koolie. :-) Boy was that a shock to the system! Talk about a whole different kind of world going from a gundog to a herding dog. So started a whole new set of learning skills. There is still so much to learn, so much handling I can still improve... Haze is my second Koolie, and was an impulse buy, they are as addictive as Agility is! (I just kept a pup I wasn't going to from my first Koolie litter) I fell in love with a photo of the cutest little coffee colour puppy with floppy ears and a creamy stripe on one side of her face. It turned out she was the breeders "keeper" puppy, but she let me have Haze (then Haley) and kept a different one. She flew out from Victoria at ten weeks, and joined my pack, fitting in very nicely thank you. She is a sensitive soul, and for a while I thought she wouldn't make an agility dog, but she's matured, got more confident, and really hit her stride lately. :-) Haze is the most loving dog, never does a naughty thing if she can possibly avoid it, and just loves to do agility, as well as running in the dunes at the beach. Her favourite toy at home is a big ball, and her favourite game with it is she likes to stand her front paws on and I have to try to kick it out of her grip while she grabs at it with her teeth and feet. :-) I was in the team once before, with Ashley, my youngest Welshie, back in 2005, so it's great to make it into the team again! A great honour to represent the Zone. It's been a few years since we had the trophy in Zone 3, hopefully this is the year it comes back!!! Rock on NZDAC! See you all there :-) NZDAC

Intermediate Dianne Reid and AgCh JCh Jamaican Scandal of Mordor Jamaica (Jimmy) 4 years Border Collie Jamaica is a lovely little dog. She has an awesome temperament, incredible focus, a strong love of all things "agility" AND she is very pretty to boot - well I think so anyway! Jamaica has always made me laugh. When you are training her and she chooses to do something, shall we say 'extra', she will zoom back to you, mouth open, laughing at you, saying "Was that good Mum??!!" What can you do but laugh at her - she gets away with blue murder because of this little trait! Jimmy or JimJams, as she is known to her friends, has been a very easy dog to train. She loves learning and catches on really quickly. I am immensely proud of my wee girl and can only hope I live up to her standards!! Roll on NZDAC 2013 which is shaping up to be very memora-bull and like no udder!!! Senior Karen de Wit and Quickpaws fast finish JDX Finn 3 years BC x Heading I have been in the InterZone Team with four dogs Cobber, Moss, Tana, Dee and now Finn. When Quick had her puppies we were only keeping one, a Tri bitch, but I fell in love with a small black boy, who I eventually got to keep, and what a great decision that was!! Originally called Blackie, for the obvious reason, he is an awesome wee dog, and I love him to bits!! He always tries hard, and he is also very cuddly and smoochy every night he curls up on my lap in front of the TV, and in the morning jumps up on the bed for a cuddle lovely!! A number of his pet names really describe him well - they are "friendly Finn" and "filthy Finn". Like most dogs he does like to roll in smelly things! He also has a great nature. He tries very hard in agility and at teams trials he was awesome!! I am overwhelmed to have made the Senior/Jumpers dog with him this year - last year he was the Novice dog and won the Novice final, but Senior is a far bigger test! However we will be trying our hardest and lets hope the luck is with us. NZDAC

Zone 4 Starters Leanah Magon and My Buddy Holly the ALF Holly 2 years - Cocker Spaniel x Miniature Poodle Hi, I'm Leanah Magon and I'm a member of CCATS. I was introduced to the sport about 10 years when I started training my first dog Zara, a Spoodle (King Charles Spaniel x Poodle). She was a fantastic first dog, reliable and steady giving me a chance to build up skills. In 2009 I made the Zone 4 team for starters with my second dog Jez (Lhasa Apso x Poodle). This is Holly, also a Spoodle however she is double the size of Zara, as she is a Cocker Spaniel x Miniature Poodle, she is my third agility dog and has just turned 2. Holly came to me at the end of 2011 after suddenly losing Zara. Holly was the last one left from her litter and was initially was destined for another family, we were going to have to wait for the next litter, but they decided that timing was not right and she became available. Due to timing at home we left Holly with the breeder for another week. Less than a week after Holly joined the family the December Earthquake hit and being in the East of Christchurch we had a third lot of liquefaction to clean up which Holly enjoyed helping to clean up, luckily we had water to clean both her a Jez up. Holly has been a delight to train she has picked things up surprisingly quickly and just loves to learn and explore. This is my first time travelling up to the North Island for a competition and I am excited to be representing Zone 4 at this years NZDAC, looking forward to a great weekend. Novice Sue McKee and Evoque Mai Epic Zest not yet 2 - Border Collie Hi, My name is Sue McKee and I am proud to be representing Zone 4 with my chocolate Border Collie, Zest (nickname Zesty Pops). I am a recent convert to the world of Border Collies, having owned and run several gundogs with varying degrees of success. The last one (a naughty but loveable Brittany named Rez) nearly finished me off in the agility game, and so when I was visiting a friend who had a litter of pups and little Lily 1 (her nickname) crawled onto my lap and went to sleep, I fell in love. It was a quiet trip home from Dunedin as husband Rob thought I really didn t need another dog, but eventually he caved in and I was soon the proud owner of a wee bundle of fluff, renamed Zest. She has been a delight to raise and train. In her quiet moments she sleeps at my feet while I work on the computer, but is always ready to do some training or go for a walk. After years without a Border Collie I wonder why I waited so long, and why nobody told me how awesome they are... oh, but wait, maybe they did and I just wasn t listening! NZDAC

Zest has had the privilege of growing up with regular contact with her extended family of brother, sister, mother and father plus several aunties that she sees regularly, which has been wonderful. As I write this Zest is only 19 months old with only two champ events under her belt so we have a lot ahead of us to look forward to. Intermediate Kathryn Snook and Ag Gr Ch Schondara Star Attraction CDX-Silver RN Izzy Whiz 8 years Miniature Schnauzer Introducing Izzy Whiz my first competitive agility and obedience miniature schnauzer. We have been competing for approximately 6 years and have represented Zone 4 in two other national events. Izzy is my special home-breed wee mate who was chosen for her outstanding drive, intelligence and willingness to please. Izzy enjoys life in Brooklands where she has become the self appointed watchdog and bird chaser. She is spoilt for choice for exercise like a run in the forest, on the beach or a blat along the lagoon walking tracks. We are proud to be representing Zone 4 and will give it our best shot. Senior Natasha Neame and AgGrCh JGrCh Tricot Trio 8 years - Heading dog x Border Collie Tricot and I have been working together since I rehomed her as a 2yr old, she is now 8 ½ yrs old. We have done so much together in that time, she has taken me on a wonderful ride and achieved so much, she is the perfect partner and gives 110% every time we step up to the line, I feel so lucky to share her love of agility with her. Jolt is a three year old Border Collie - affectionately known as 'the Skunk' at home (due to her unique black & white markings!). Both of Jolts parents have also represented the zone 5 team in previous years, and with her 'big' sister in the team this year it certainly has a 'family' feel about it. Like her sister, Jolt loves agility and has certainly made me sharpen up on commands and handling - especially in Jumpers where everything happens at 100 miles an hour! This will be my 6th time representing zone 5 and Jolts 1st. We are proud to be part of the Zone 5 'Black & White Border Collie Team'. Good luck to all! Senior Anne Cook and AgGrCh JCh Backbeach Just Juic'n D Limit Juice 4 years Border Collie Greetings all. My name is Anne Cook and I am running in the Zone team competition for the 9th time this year. Makes me feel really old writing that! I really feel like I run out of things to say each you but for those that dont know me, I live with my husband Dave, 11 dogs, a cat and our 2 1/2 yr daughter. We lead very hectic lives but wouldnt have it any other way. Juice is the first of our 3 litters of BackBeach dogs that Daves dog Jax sired. She is 4yrs and just lives for agility. Her small size has never stopped her and after chasing those damn ADXs titled to Agility Grand Champion earlier this year and is 2 challenges off her Jumpers Grand Champion title. (hopefully by the time you read this she has achieved it!) I am grateful to own and run such a wonderful dog, not only does she make agility so enjoyable but she is a great companion too. Fingers crossed after Christmas the pitter patter of little Juice puppies will be gracing us! Good luck to all competitors. Im hoping that this will be the 3rd year I help Zone 5 bring home the trophy! NZDAC
