5 Lynn Parker, Eileen Hyde, Dena Norton, Sue Roble, Tracey Martin, Virginia Smith & Dorothea Burton Fido Fest event was held Sept 7 at Red Oaks Water Park. SDTC participated as a vendor in promoting our classes in obedience, agility, rally and conformation. We had a simple Rally ring and a simple Agility ring with a few jumps & tunnel for people and their dogs to try, with our guidance. A few were interested in the Rally course but the Agility Course was the winner. Many people & their dogs participated in trying the agility course. It was interesting to see how many dogs enjoyed this activity. A few were not thrilled with the tunnel, but the jumps and tire were fun for them. Volunteers were Eileen Hyde with her 3 grandchildren (Louis, Dylan & Rocco), Dena Norton (with husband, Paul & son, Issac), Lynn Parker, Pat Diefenbach, Liz McLeod, Suzanne Roble, Gina Czapiewski, Tracey Martin, Dorothea Burton, Bill Snyder, Kate Parcells, Rene Sutton, Leslie Keys and daughter (Ellie), and Virginia Smith. Dena's husband helped set up and take down. Most of the volunteers brought their dogs with them. Carol Silverman stopped by a few minutes and introduced her new puppy, Quiz, to us. Cute, cute puppy The Park supplied Pizza & Pop, which was a very nice surprise. The weather was beautiful with a nice, light breeze. We had a great spot where we could watch the dogs participating in the swim and still have people come by our spot, ask questions, and try the courses. 5

6 OBEDIENCE EXHIBITORS AT THEIR BEST WHY I LOVE THIS SPORT! (REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM CONNIE CLEVELAND) Anyone that was at the Greenville Kennel Club show on Sunday, July 27, witnessed something they had never seen before, and will never forget. Mary Ellen Moyse is a stroke survivor. We met her almost two years ago when she approached us for help training Nina, her Golden Retriever. At that time, Nina had a CD, but a bad habit of running amuck in the ring between exercises. Cat Perry, an accomplished trainer and competitor, and highly valued team member, was up to the challenge. She offered to help Mary Ellen weekly as she pursued her higher obedience titles. Because of the cognitive difficulties that Mary Ellen deals with, Cat is unbelievably creative as she designs lesson plans. She uses photographs and written instructions to help Mary Ellen remember the commands and signals she is learning. She sends Mary Ellen home with written instructions every week. Mary Ellen is a perfect student. She trains every day, carrying her notes to remember Cat s instructions. Nina is a delightful Golden Retriever that seems to understand Mary Ellen s limitations. She works hard to control her enthusiasm as her speed and animation are simply not appropriate under the circumstances. During their quest for the CDX, in one heartbreaking moment, as Mary Ellen moved to the drop on recall in the ring, she realized that she still had a treat in her paralyzed hand. After that, all of us that love Mary Ellen did a better job of making sure mistakes like that would not happen again. Additionally, Cat printed a card for Mary Ellen to present to the judge s as she enters the ring stating I have had a stroke. Please give instructions slowly and clearly. At each exercise, please remind me to wait for judge s command. Thank you, Mary Ellen Moyse. Mary Ellen s success cannot be talked about without mentioning her husband George. Mary Ellen and George were friends in High School, and after both of them raised their families and were predeceased by their spouses,they became reacquainted and were married 7 years ago. George drives 3 hours one way to bring Mary Ellen to her lesson, regales the staff at Dog Trainers Workshop with his wonderful jokes, and is as devoted to Nina s success as Mary Ellen is. On Wednesday, July 23, having earned CDX and GO titles, Mary Ellen entered Nina in Utility for the first time at the Sandlapper Golden Retriever Specialty. It was so close- Nina failed the last jump. Mary Ellen came back to the show on Saturday, and to everyone s delight, earned her first leg and third place in Utility A. 6

7 On Sunday, as Mary Ellen and Nina were entering the building, Mary Ellen fell. No one knew how seriously she was injured, but she couldn t stand up, and it was quickly decided that the paramedics needed to take her to the hospital. Equally quickly, Mary Ellen and George asked if someone else could show Nina in Utility A the class was already underway. Cat and I looked at each other. Neither of us are eligible to show a dog in Utility A. We spoke briefly to Jim Ham, the Utility A judge. He had judged Mary Ellen on Wednesday, and was immediately on board agreeing to move Nina to the end of the class while we rounded up a handler for her. Monica Hunter was just leaving the Utility A ring. Monica has had Utility experience pursuing a UDX with her German Shepherd, and was familiar with Mr. Ham s ring procedure she was the perfect candidate. Monica never even blinked at our proposal. We were asking her to show a dog she had never previously met. She jumped in with both feet, putting her own dog away and immediately heading to Nina s crate as Cat told her Nina s commands- none of which were commands that Monica uses. Monica took Nina outside, introduced herself to her, and came back in ready to give Utility a try. Now we had a dog, and a handler, but no equipment. We had not thought to get that from George before he left with the ambulance. So, with a borrowed set of scent articles, Monica set off to the far end of the building to try a small set. Nina missed one, and then did four more correctly. Meanwhile, Lisa Wienhold ran to her car to get an extra set that Nina could use in the ring. Cat s final instructions to Monica were to remember that she had to move around the ring like Mary Ellen- 20 years her senior, and a stroke survivor. The saddest part of the day is that we did not video the performance. When Nina did her signals, there was a sigh of relief, but when she did both scent articles with no difficulty, our jaws dropped. Glove 2 was a piece of cake, and the go-outs were straight, and fast, and the jumps were done with enthusiasm. Before the final finish, the cheers were deafening. There was not a dry eye anywhere around as Monica and Nina were awarded first in Utility A with a 197. What a tribute to our sport! This is what obedience is all about. Please pray for Mary Ellen. At the time of this writing she is heading into surgery for a total hip replacement. We have no doubt she and Nina will be back. Mary Ellen had already announced that after her UD she intends to get Nina s Junior Hunter title. After all, she only has one leg to go! 7

This event is sponsored by Guardian for Animals. We have Sue Roble signed up for Saturday and Pat Diefenbach and Dorthea Burton for Sunday. We really need another person on Saturday from on 1-5 p.m. This is a indoor event. Table is provided. You may bring a chair, your dog and a crate. It is a great place to get our name out and pick up some new students. If you can help, please let me know. Broccoli/Cauliflower Salad (From Mildred Krnacik) This recipe is not exact and can be adjusted to taste. Mix together: Separate two heads of broccoli and at least half of one large head of cauliflower (Can use more if wanted--just will have to increase dressing) Should have bite sized pieces and the same amount of broccoli and cauliflower 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup raisins, plumped (plump by soaking in hot water for at least 1/2 hour) 6 slices cooked bacon, crumbled 1-2 cups walnut pieces (can toast the walnuts or use sliced almonds) Dressing Mix together: 2/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup or less vinegar 1/4 cup vinegar (may need more--depending on taste) Pour over salad and refrigerate for at least one hour. Stir and serve. 10

11 Tuna Fudge Try It..Your Best Friend Might Like It! 2 cans tuna packed in water, do not drain 2 whole eggs 1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour Garlic powder, optional Combine with electric mixer.it must be smooth. Spread in greased 9x9 pan. Bake 350 degrees for 20 mins. Refrigerate or freeze. 11
