The Pedigrees of Tsubaki-Goma and Goromaru (A Discussion on the Pinto Dog) 1 An Analysis of the Akita Dogs, Part 10 By Mutsuo Okada I have a notebook of the breeding records of Tsubaki-Goma (Ichinoseki-Goma) (photograph 24). I received this notebook with some photographs ten years ago from Ms, Yoshiko? (Nagako? Ryoko?) Ichinoseki, who was the custodian for the Ichinoseki family. As I studied this notebook about the bitches that were bred to Tsubaki-Goma, I found that some of the dogs that I was familiar with came from these bitches. Tsubaki-Goma-go is the sire of Goromaru (photograph 26). I will now present to you some photographs of Tsubaki-Goma s earlier offspring that came before Goromaru. In the previous parts of this series, I have shown photographs of offspring of Tsubaki-Goma that did well at the dog shows. Please study the photographs of these dogs. Dogs of the Dewa line were at their height of popularity at that time in Odate. Competition between dog dealers was intense. Disparaging remarks such as Tsubaki-Goma has weak hindlegs and knees were heard after the passing in 1947 (22 nd year of Showa) of the elderly Mr. Takichi Ichinoseki. Mr. Takichi was a kin of Mr. Kuniro Ichinoseki, and caretaker of Mr. Kuniro s Akita dogs from prewar days. After the death of Mr. Takichi, demands for stud services for Tsubaki-Goma declined. Furthermore, Tsubaki-Goma had the tendency to hesitate mounting a bitch. Tsubaki-Goma s son, Terukzae-go (Dam: Tamazakura) that went to the kennel of Mr. Ishiyama of Haneda was used widely as a foundation dog in the Tokyo area. Tsukasa-go (photograph 28) is said to have been among the last offspring of Tsubaki-Goma. His littermates were Tamaizumi (photograph 4) and Goma-Iwa (photograph 5). Wakataro (photograph 6) was used as a stud dog in Odate. Goma-Iwa was ranked highly at the Akiho s Headquarters Show. Among his descendants was the famous Hakuho (photograph 27). Terukaze (photograph 3), Tamaizumi, and Jiromaru. Many of their offspring had tail that curled over the back (taikomaki) (including the tail of Daini-Nyogetsu (Daini-Jyogetsu-go) (photograph 1). Many of these dogs also had the frizzy tail that is not seen too often now. The frizzy tail seen on Tsubaki-Goma was passed on to many of his descendants. The Akikyo standard states that the frizzy tail is not desirable. Frizzy tail was difficult to eliminate. Akita dogs with tight curled tails were seen in many of the otherwise excellent Akita dogs. Among these were also dogs with tips of tails that resembled a sazae ( turban? ).

2 Among the offspring that were representative of Goromaru, I have classified them according to the bitches that Goromaru was bred to: 1. Bitches of the Dewa line. 2. Bitches of the Ichinoseki line. 3. Bitches from Senboku [The so-called Taihei (Ohira) line] 4. Bitches of the Akita Nikkei line. 5. Bitches from other bloodlines. The first of those from the Dewa line is Oshu-go that was discussed in Part 6. Her dam was Metei (Raiden x Datemitsu) an elder half sister of Kongo with a different sire (Raiden), but with the same dam Datemitsu. (Kongo s sire was Taishu.) I have written about her previosuly up to the time was sold to someone in Tokyo. Date-no-Ryu-go (photograph 8) of the Heirakudo Kennel was born out of Datemitsu (photograph 29) and Goromaru. The original plan was to breed Datemitsu to Tsubaki-Goma. However, Tsubaki-Goma did not easily take to mounting a large bitch. This could be partly attributed to the age of Tsubaki-Goma at that time. Although it was inconvenient, Mr. Ryonosuke Hiraizumi (photograph 20), the son (of Mr. Eikichi Hiraizumi) (photograph 19), decided to go from (Page 46) Odate to Akita City where Goromaru lived to witness the breeding of his Datemitsu to Goromaru. Although it seems that a pinto was produced in the resulting litter, the whereabouts of this dog is unknown since this was the time when pintos were being faulted. Date-no-Ryu placed second after Shinko (See part 8) at the Akiho s Eighteenth Headquarters Show. In spite of a late debut, Date-no-Ryu (photograph 8) became known through his being advertised for many months in the dog magazine Aiken no Tomo. Date-no- Ryu and his offspring, Date-no-Tochi, (photograph 9) were shown as reference dogs at the Akikyo s headquarters show in Tokyo. Their popularity was attributed to their energetic appearance and Date-no-Ryu s being Kongo s younger half brother with a different sire. This was the period when breeding dogs of the Ichinoseki to dogs of the Dewa lines was believed that this could result in the production of some excellent Akita dogs. The offspring, Date-no-Tochi (Dam: Long) (photograph 9) was a young energetic dog. However, he had the chocolate colored coat of the Dewa line. From Date-no-Ryu came Date-no- Tochi, which produced Tochi-no-Ryu (photograph 10) and Date-no-Habu (Date-no-Ryu x Sandai-Hime) (photograph 11). Date-no-Habu was raised under the tender care at the Heirakudo Kennel (of Mr. Hiraizumi). However, as seen in the photograph, Date-no-Habu had wrinkles that were disappointing. Thus dogs of the Date-no-Ryu line went into a state of decline from that time on.

3 Wakame-go (photographs 12 and 13), a bitch that was the littermate of Date-no-Tochi, had the questionable harsh pinto coat. The appearance of Wakame-go with that type of pinto coat led to downfall of the pinto coat. I will go into a discussion on the pinto coat and its downfall. Goromaru s had a pinto coat. However, since the standard considers the pinto coat as a fault, Goromaru was placed at the lower ranks at dog shows. However, both Mr. Hyoemon Kyono (photographs 16 & 17) and Mr. Katsusuke Ishihara (photograph 18) ignored Goromaru s pinto coat and wanted to pass on Goromaru s good points to his offspring. When Goromaru was first bred to bitches of the Taihei line, the first generation had no pintos. That litter had only red and white dogs. When Mayor Masutaro Ito of Kiyomizu Village was advised by Mr. Ishihara to breed Goromaru to bitches of the Taihei line, Mr. Ito was taken by surprise and is said to have said, I don t want any pintos! Mr. Ishihara pointed to the river near the Ito residence and told Mr. Ito, Then throw the pintos into that river! Out of the breedings with bitches from Senboku came Tanihibiki, Fudo, Kiyohime, Gorome, Tetsumaru (White bitch and littermate of Tanihibiki). These dogs gave evidence to the excellent results from the breeding of Goromaru to bitches from Senboku. This resulted in more bitches from Senboku being bred to Goromaru. I will go into the details of these bitches of the Taihei line later. When Date-no-Ryu was produced when Goromaru was bred to Datemitsu, the popularity of Goromaru rose, and many bitches were brought to Goromaru to be bred. However, some of the people at this time also secretly fell in love with the pinto. Goromaru produced only a few pintos (I personally saw only one pinto out of Goromaru). However, one began to see a few pintos in the second generation of certain bloodlines. Please refer to Part 3 where I have discussed the body forms of Fukutaro (Winner of Akikyo s Gold Medal) and Muchi-go (Winner of Akiho s Meiyosho). This resulted in the belief among some of the Akita dog fans that the pinto had was gaining recognition. Furthermore, the belief that the pinto was a resurrection of the pure legitimate Akita dog began to circulate. Seeing this trend at the dog shows, Mr. Katsusuke Ishihara was hoping to stop this trend. Mr. Ishihara once told me, Goromaru was my main interest before this happened. If one can ignore Goromaru s fault of being a pinto and his having a deep stop, his producing of many outstanding offspring of high quality has raised his value as a foundation dog. As Goromaru s contribution was a step toward the restoration of the Japanese dog type Akita dog, Goromaru s pinto pattern was also believed by the uninformed as step toward the restoration process. The step toward restoration was confused with the goal. If my memory is correct, the owner of Wakame-go was Mr. Shigeru Matsuyama, who, at that time, an officer at Akiho. Wakame-go was highly ranked at the Akiho s headquarters show. In November of 1955 (30 th year of Showa), Wakame-go came from Odate to Tokyo to be shown at the first and only national Japanese dog show of selected Japanese dogs that was

4 sponsored by the Bunkasho (Cultural Properties Protection Committee). This dog drew the public s attention, Only Goromaru and Wakame-go (Date-no-Ryu x Long) were the only pinto dogs that were shown at this dog. Wakame-go was shown because she belonged to the director of Akiho. When I saw this dog, I noticed her harsh pinto pattern. (Page 47) I also noticed the unsightly wide blaze on her face. However, this dog was well received at this show. Some saw this as an opportunity to promote this type of pinto as the legitimate type of Akita dog. This led many admirers of the pinto dog to advertise or write in the dog magazines about their pinto dogs. This was especially true among beginners in the Kansai (Kyoto-Osaka) area where this became a topic of discussion. From that time on, a steady flow of pintos were produced from the grandchildren of Goromaru. These pintos were shown in large numbers at the dog shows. They were also widely advertised in dog magazines. Mr. Sadakichi Tayama s favorite dog, Hakko-go (See part 4) was also a pinto. Hakko-go s dam. Azumakaze-go (photograph 7) was a famous pinto bitch that belonged to Mr. Shoichiro Miyamoto that was also advertised widely by Mr. Miyamoto. Red pintos were numerous at that time. A few years later, the bloodline of Tamakumo was introduced into dogs from Akiho. The resulting mixed breeding produced the brindle pinto. This was followed by the golden age of the black pinto. Soon dogs resembling pinto horses that were ridden by the America Indians dominated the Akita dog scene. Many of these pintos were exported. Please note the American Akitas of today. The red pinto, black (brindle) pintoseem to be produced in great numbers there today and they seem to be unstoppable. Last year (2001) the Japan kennel Club separated the Akita dog from the American Akita. I believe this was inevitable. I will now refer to some of the important primary sources of information on the pinto patterns that are not desirable. I have discussed in Part 1 the accomplishments of Mr. Hirokichi Saito (photograph 17), who was the founder of the Nipponinu Hozonkai (Nippo, Nichiho, the Japanese Dog Preservation Society). He is considered as the father of the Japanese dogs. Mr. Saito, was almost single-handedly involved in writing the Japanese dog standard. In Volume 3, Issue No.2 of the Nippo Bulletin [November 1934 (9 th year of Showa), Mr. Saito wrote a commentary on the Japanese dog standard. He faults the pinto in Japanese dogs: The pinto coat. Pinto patterns with mixtures that are seen on the face, chest, limbs and at the tip of the tail can be tolerated. However, a one coat color is preferred. The pinto coat in the form of a large crest pattern on the torso is to be considered a fault. The pinto coat is seen in picture scrolls and is a coat color that has existed from the olden times. However, in order to standardize the coat color of the Japanese dogs, I believe that we should fault the pinto in our breeding programs.

5 If the pinto is included in the preservation process, the pinto may come to be considered to be better than those dogs with one color. This may be unavoidable. After producing some excellent dogs with coats of different colors, we should breed toward producing dogs with the pure coat of one color. However, with what we now have, I believe that the pinto colors on the face, chest, limbs and tip of the tail should be tolerated for now. Mr. Genzo Satoda (photograph 16) of Kyoto made the following comments on the pinto coat in one of the 1951 (26 th year of Showa) issues of the Nippo Bulletin. Mr. Satoda has written on the pinto coat many times before. He and Mr. Hyoemon Kyono (photographs 16 & 17) were only a year apart in age. Through their involvements together with Japanese dogs, they developed a older and younger brother friendship. Mr. Satoda was involved with the medium Japanese dogs. He with Mr. Kyono and Mr. Saito were much involved with medium Japanese dogs at Nippo during the earlier years of that organization. He is one of those whose involvement led to the growth of Nippo during those earlier years. The following is a quotation of a portion of Mr Satoda s comments: The Coat Color of Japanese Dogs: The Pinto. (The first part is omitted)) I will now enter into a discussion on the pinto coat that one must not ignore. About sixteen years ago in 1934 (9 th year of Showa), when the Japanese dog standard was established, question on the pinto coat was brought up. This was followed by many discussions. These discussions included some strange theories on this subject. However, at the end of these discussions, after his careful research into the topic of Japanese dogs, Dr. Itagaki recommended that we should breed toward standardization of one coat color.recommendation was accepted with no dissensions by headquarters officials and the membership. They also agreed to a standard that faulted the pinto. Nippo was then incorporated, and during its golden years from 1937 (12 th year of Showa) to 1941 (16 th year of Showa), (Page 48) I believe that the policy of faulting the pinto coat was followed. Just prior to the Pacific War, I lived for about a decade in the mountain areas. As I observed the revival of the Nipponinu Hozonkai (Nippo) after the war followed by the establishments of Nippo s branches nationwide, I decided to return to Kyoto from the mountains, and become involved with Japanese dogs. Unfortunately, faulting of the pinto coat was beginning to be being ignored at that time. This could be attributed to the newer members of the postwar revival period who were not informed on this matter. They also raised some questions on this matter. Leadership of that time when it came to this matter was also questionable. Also the lack of educational meetings at the headquarters to inform the membership about this matter may have also contributed to this problem.

6 Other factors that contributed to this problem may have been the lack of guidance toward improvements in the Akita dog and in methods of judging. Judges at the dog shows should have been aware that the pinto had been documented as a fault in the standard. In order to prevent the occurrence of any errors on this matter, I will submit the following references as guides for the reader. The First Kansai (Kyoto-Osaka area) Regional Show was held in the Spring of 1935 (10 th year of Showa) at the Senriyama Park in the suburbs of Osaka. The judging staff on that day consisted of five members with Mr. Hirokichi Saito (photograph 17) as head judge. The other judges were Mr. Hyoemon Kyono, Mr. Ken Ishihara, Mr. Kan? (Tamaki?) Teraoka and I. In the adult bitch division of the medium type class, Hachi -go, an excellent pinto bitch from Kishu, Nippo Medium No. 125, age; three years, sickle tail, height: 1 shaku 7 sun (51.5 cm, 20.3 inches), was shown. This bitch was admired for her excellent body form and agility. She was a challenge for the judges to decide on the championship for that day against Kusu (Kusunoki) (photograph 22) from Shikoku that was being shown in the adult male division of the medium type (Kusu went on to later win the Minister of Education Award at the Nippo s Fifth headquarters Show.). This dilemma of the judges was being observed with keen interest by entrants and spectators. Judges were in a deadlock. A heated discussion ensued among the judges and no one was willing to yield. My respects go out to these dedicated men who had the future of the Japanese dogs in their minds, and who were aware that the noble mission of the Nipponinu Hozonkai (Nippo; Nichiho) was resting on their shoulders. 1. How many points should one deduct from the pinto coat color? 2. Should one deduct points even if all of the other essential features are evident? 3. Can total points still be the highest even after points were deducted due to the pinto color? 4. In the event the pinto still be ranked the highest, could one still disqualify the pinto after careful deliberations, based on the standard? 5. In what way should one award a pinto a prize during overall judging? 6. Will penalizing the pinto at this headquarters show set a precedent for headquarters and branch shows in the future? The foregoing questions were discussed. Finally, the following resolution was agreed upon as a guide to be observed in judging in the future. Henceforth, faulting of the pinto in judging at the headquarters and branch shows should be strictly observed. The pinto should not be placed in first place nor should it be awarded any medal as the representative type, nor for any medallion. At the Thirteenth Kochi Branch show that was held on March 19, 1950 (25 th year of Showa), two excellent pinto dogs were shown in the male wakainu (10 to 18 months) class, After much deliberation, Judge Yasuhara and the other judges decided to penalize the dogs with pinto coats based on the headquarters judging policy, and thus this was announced over the microphone that these dogs will not be

7 eligible for best in show. Fortunately, the branch chairman and the owners of these two pinto dogs accepted the decision, based on their awareness of the stipulations in the Nippo standard. I often wonder if that policy about the pinto is still being observed at the branch shows today. However, I have seen the photos of a dozen pintos in the postwar Nippo Bulletins that has caused me to wonder if this is still true. My fervent desire is that the headquarters editorial staff will emphasize this point as a matter of guidance. (Omission of a part of this article) I plan to write more on the coat colors at my leisure at some other time. One should ever keep in mind the genetic trend of the pinto when breeding. When a goma (sesame) dog is bred to a white dog, one will occasionally see a pinto in the resulting litter. One should carefully check into the litter s sire, dam, grandparents for any pinto in their genes. One should then carefully record the registration numbers, exclusions, coat colors of stillborn puppies in the same litter also. (Page 49) I want to close my comments by saying that these stipulations on the pinto be clearly stated also in the dog magazines. January 30, 1951 (26 th year of Showa). Note: Professor Itagaki refers to Dr, Shiro Itagaki (photograph 17). Judge Yasuhara refers to the owner of the famous dog Kusu-go (Kusunoki-go), Mr. Shunichi Yasuhara of the Kibi-so Kennel. Next, I would like to refer the reader to an important symposium that I referred to in Part 2, when Mr. Hirokichi Saito invited Mr. Katsuro Matsumoto to discuss why the pinto was not included in the Japanese dog standard. This symposium appeared in the 1954 (29 th issue of the Aiken No Tomo magazine.(april 1954) (First part is omitted) A Definition for The Natural Monument Saito: One must try to distinguish the dog that was designated as a natural monument that is to be preserved as the primitive type of dog based on scientific studies on one hand, and the dog as an excellent show dog on the other hand. They are different. Therefore, at the first Nippo show that was held at the Matsuya in Ginza, Mr. (Shigeie) Izumi s (photograph 25) Kin (photograph 23) was shown. Kin was the only dog at that time that was designated as a natural monument. The Akita dog was the only Japanese dog that was declared as a natural monument at that time. At that time, Kin was the only dog so designated as a natural monument. Mr. Izumi, who was one of the judges, insisted that Kin be awarded the Monbu Daijinsho (The Minister of Education Award) because Kin was the only dog that was designated as a natural monument. I disagreed. We had decided previously on a policy at Nippo to separate the judging of the dog as a natural monument and as a show dog. Mr. Kaburagi has often stated that We are doing it from a scientific standpoint, and you are doing it from the standpoint of dog lovers. For one to assume that because a dog was designated as a natural monument, the dog must be an excellent specimen and should be given the top award at Nippo is absurd. Therefore, I decided on the

8 policy of total separation between the two categories. Thus, at the first Nippo show, Mr. (Eiichi?, Hidekazu?) Nakagami s dog from Hokkaido called Goro won first place and also the Minister of Educaion Award. Mr. Kaburagi, based on his research, determined which dogs were to be slated as natural monuments. The Nipponinu Hozonkai (Nippo, the Japanese Dog Preservation Society, Nichiho) started out from such a policy to have Mr. Kaburagi pick out only the better dogs. Therefore, when I wrote the Japanese dog standard I did not base the standard on principles of the natural monument. However, after my resignation from Nippo, and when Mr. Kaburagi (Dr. Tokio Kaburagi) became chairman of Nippo after the war, he decided to declare the excellent dogs at the Nippo show as natural monuments. When I wrote the Japanese dog standard, I did not consider the Japanese dog in the Nippo standard as natural monuments. However, after I had resigned from Nippo, when Mr. Kaburagi became the chairman of Nippo after he war, this policy may have been a political one on his part to expand Nippo. I cannot ever recall using the Nippo s standard to designate any of the excellent dogs as natural monuments when I was involved with Nippo. I cannot ever recall writing a standard for the natural monument. A standard for the natural monument should be written by the Ministry of Education based on scientific findings. The dog as a natural monument is the primitive type that came from the past that should be saved based on scientific findings, and not necessarily on the good or bad qualities of the dog. I wrote the Nippo standard based on my motive of taking the surviving dogs as basic materials to be bred toward the excellent Japanese dogs that are based on the Nippo standard. Since scientific findings on Japanese dogs as natural monuments are yet scanty, I believe that the designation of the winning Akita dog as a natural monuments based on the Nippo standard by Mr. Kaburagi meant that he allowed the Nippo standard to be the standard for the natural monument. Matsumoto: A task that is incomplete, wouldn t you say? Saito: A separate standard for a dog as a natural monument that is separate from the standard for the domesticated dog should be written. From the beginning, Nippo has had no direct relationship with the natural monument. I have said this repeatedly. Otherwise the development of the dog from a scientific standpoint would not become a possibility. Ito: I agree. For example, the ancient painting styles of Japan are natural monuments. From among our contemporaries, we should include the paintings of Taikan Yokoyama ( ) known for his Japanese style paintings (Reference: Munsterberg, Hugo, The Arts of Japan, pp , 1957, Tuttle.). Of paintings from the past, we should include the paintings of Motonobu Kano ( ). Saito: If the dog with the long coat is representative of dogs from Akita, dogs with the long coats should be designated as natural monuments. Pintos were numerous in the past. Many pinto dogs are seen in the picture scrolls from the Late Kamakura Period ( ) (photograph 15). This goes back several

9 hundred years in history. That would mean we must designate the pintos as natural monuments. Otherwise the natural monuments would be of no significance. My reason for eliminating the pinto in the standard was to improve the domestic dog. A domestic dog must be developed to meet man s daily needs and should be developed to meet the needs of the times. (The last part of this article is omitted.) Note: Matsumoto refers to Mr. Katsuro Matsumoto. Ito refers to Mr. Jiro Ito (First editor of the Aiken no Tomo magazine) Admiration for the pinto dog has continued to this day. Mr. Matsuyama has also stated in the Aiken no Tomo magazine that he saw such pintos during his boyhood days and has written articles that thus Akita dogs should be this way. Mr. Ishihara has told me that I have heard that Mr. Matsuyama (the owner of Wakame) was asked by Akiho at the end of that year to resign from his position as a trustee of Akiho. To dismiss him so late in the year, I believe was cruel, (However, Mr. Ishihara also told me that he was also shocked when he saw Wakame the pinto dog at the dog show in Hibiya Park in Tokyo.) Akiho often had internal discords on matters such as Akiho splitting for a while into another group called the Akihokyo over disputes on the large type of the Akita dog. There were also disputes on whether one should use the term The large type Akita dog, etc. However, Akihokyo later rejoined Akiho. I heard no more about Wakame thereafter. But my memory of Wakame being shown at the Hibiya Park on that day remains etched in my mind. PHOTOGRAPHS 1. Daini-Jogetsu-go (2) Sire: Ichinoseki-Goma. Dam: Matsukaze.
