The dogs of QLCA an insight into the lives of some of the dogs that go lure coursing or so we lure course, but we also My dogs lure courses but also.. Sharon Fraser and her dogs keep themselves occupied between lure coursing meetings. Both Louie the Papillon and Boston the Dalmatian are tracking dogs. Louie recently passed his Tracking Dog (TD2) test and Boston passed his TD5 test. Louie also competes in Jetty Jumping & has started in Fly Ball. Both dogs also visit a Dementia Unit at a local Nursing Home and spend time with the residents. I take both dogs for 2 hrs each fortnight, and its amazing how the faces of the residents light up as.."their Dog has come home They remember each fortnight we are due and the men mostly like REAL dogs that being Boston as the Ladies like the cuddly Louie. Both dogs have impeccable manners and just meld with the residents I sit & watch them. Even some residents that initially were afraid of dogs now keep treats from their meals to feed the pups. I just love taking the dogs & will continue to do so for as long as I can. Its amazing how dog owners can bring a smile to a residents face by just offering to volunteer some time to help make residents lives as happy as possible. 4

HISTORY OF LURE COURSING IN AUSTRALIA In 1984 Steve and Sabine Muller arrived from Germany bringing with them their Afghan hounds, they were involved in Lure coursing in Germany, so after racing their Afghans on the Greyhound tracks with the Afghan hound club for a few months, decided there was a need to get a more natural from of chasing for the dogs, so Steve and Sabine floated the idea of Lure coursing, of course no body knew what this was and after a lot explaining it was decided to try it. A small group of people got together to try and figure out how to make this happen. After many attempts and many hours of building machines and rollers and holding fun days trying to get equipment to last the day with out blowing up we finally in 1990 had equipment good enough to form a club In 1990 Steve and Sabine called for people interested in forming a lure coursing club to meet at Ian Smiths house, well that many people turned up we had to move into the double garage, so that night a club was formed. At that first meeting it was decided the club would run all breeds in competition but also be dedicated to the preservation of the functional hound which became the club's motto. It was also decided to have a section where dogs without papers could run as most breed club's had a rescue arm and this section would allow the people who took these dog's into their homes something they could take part in with their dogs. We also decided that there would be no interbreed running so each breed could show it's full potential while on the coursing field. With the starting of a new sport and the forming of a new club a lot of things had to be put into place like, rules had to be formulated, how to actuary run a competition, how to judge all breeds the list just went on and on. As you can imagine the first elected committee was meeting very week late into the night trying to put this together, we relied heavily on Steve and Sabine Muller's experience with lure coursing to put a system in place that people would be happy with. The first competition meeting was held late 1990, this was a very nervous moment for the hard working committee but it proved to be very successful with people having a very enjoyable day. As the months pasted we learned a lot and improved with every meeting, A grading system was finally worked out that suited all breeds and the judging was fine tuned so all breed's were on equal terms. This has worked really well, as we have had every thing from a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to Greyhounds get best in field. One of our big problems was getting somewhere to hold meetings. Steve and Sabine had 5 acres which we used but they had to move.a Pony club came to our rescue and allowed the club to use their grounds, but horses cut up the ground up rather badly which is not good for fast running dogs. So a decision was made to get our own grounds. We approached the Brisbane city council for land and after a lot of meetings (and I mean a lot) the council granted us a lease on 15 acres of land, a great step forward for the club. With the help of some great sponsors we put a dog proof fence around the running area and around the spectator area to keep the people separated from the dogs running, we even have toilets on the grounds now. The club is now holding meetings once a month and twice a month during the winter months and running a summer cup in the afternoons during the hottest months of the year, Our championships are held in September where after qualifying during the year the top 3 dogs of every breed run a 500m course twice in 15 minutes with vet check in-between, a good meeting to watch.. Well that s a brief out line of how lure coursing started and progressed up to the present day. Ian Smith 5

President s Report The Queensland Lure Coursing Inc. would like to recognise the recent achievements of the five QLCA judges that have attained the qualification of field judge with the Australian National Kennel Council. This is a significant achievement for these judges and will contribute to the promotion and development of the sport of Lure coursing in Australia. The QLCA has always valued and supported efforts and input from its panel of judges. After spending many years judging with the QLCA, we would like to congratulate those QLCA judges for achieving their positions with the ANKC and wish them well for their future appointments. The QLCA is looking forward to continuing to work collaboratively with these five ANKC judges as part of the Judges panel for the ALCA and will value their support, expertise and commitment through judging appointments with the QLCA. Ian Smith Loose dogs We have been seeing a number of loose dogs on the ground. We are asking members to make sure your dog/s are secure in crates or securely tied to stakes, when you have to leave them alone. Also to be hyper aware when walking them, that they have not chewed their lead, are backing out of collar and any other Houdini act that they can achieve in their mission to get that plastic bag. The reason being, is that all our dogs are very excited (may be an understatement there) and a loose dog, barging to the front of the line, may be enough to incite the waiting dog/s to react. The club has a loose dog penalty and this will be enforced. So once the handler and the dog has been identified, a loose dog penalty will be imposed of 25 points. Loose dogs penalty: 25 points The penalty of twenty-five [25] points shall be given against a dog that is found loose anywhere on the grounds on the day. It will have no effect on the dog s overall yearly rating or grading. For those dogs that are not running, that are the cheerleaders for their family, the following was passed at the Sept 2011 General Meeting. The consequence for loose dogs which are not entered on the day. The owner/handler is to be fined $5.00 for any nonparticipating loose dog on the grounds. Any refusal to pay will attract a 25 point penalty against the highest scoring dog entered by this person. Note: Soft crates are not suitable for dogs that get excited zips break, get unzipped, and claws tear mesh = dog gone Dogs can chew through leads = dog gone Loose collars = dog gone 7

Sincerely, Rod Scott Can t catch your dog? At June s Committee meeting, the issue of dogs delaying the coursing day due to being difficult to catch was discussed. We have all been there at one time or another, some have never left that state, the dog that is having so much fun, running naked, free and faster than your legs can carry you. Wants that lure to go again and won't leave the field. It can be amusing (for those on the sidelines) and embarrassing (for the handler) and yes we all sometimes get annoyed at the delay, especially on the hotter days, only Human nature after all. This is a problem that has plagued those in the coursing world for years and for some dogs there are no answers, just have to accept it. The rest, you can work hard on recall, try treats, tug toys etc. but sometimes the rule book gets thrown out the window by the dog on the way into the carpark. So we are going to try something different. Those dogs that are challenging and you feel are going to cause delay to the day, we will run towards the end of the run, directly after the group runs, BUT before the late entries. Of course the Race Secretary and field Officials are relying on you, the owner to make this decision, when you register for the day. Just tell the Race Secretary, dog may be hard to catch and you will be moved to the end of the groups, that relieves the pressure on you to catch (maybe making it go easier, just to make a liar out of you). When you feel your dog has got better, you can shift yourself back into your group. 8

To enable our new Race Secretary to be able to do the role and fit it in with her work commitments, Nic has asked that we all support her, by making sure all entries are received by the Entry Cut off date. This was discussed at a General Meeting in September 2014 and the following motion was proposed and accepted. All entries are to be received by the Racing Secretary by the Friday 1 week before the date of the coursing meeting being entered. As coursing starts at 9.30am, check in of entered dogs will commence at 8am and close at 8.45am. Any entered dogs that check in after 8.45am will be run as late entries along with all other dogs entered after the Friday cut off date. Owners of dogs doing puppy and novice runs must purchase their tickets costing $ 1.00 from the check in desk and be ready to go onto the field to run at 9am. Summer Cup runs start at 8.30am, the check in time will close at 8am. Puppy and novice runs will commence at 8am. FOR A MEETING TO START ON TIME, VOLUNTEERS ARE VITALLY NEEDED TO SET UP Now I know that some members do have concerns about the enforcement of this rule regarding entries. The reason behind this, is that the Race Secretary needs to load all entries into a Spreadsheet, which is linked thru to various sheets for Judges, check in, etc. Once the sheet is finished, it is difficult to add new entries. It is easy to scratch the dog as not attending on the day. The club does accept Pre-entries for the whole year, with payment up front, should you be interested, this way your dog is entered, it does mean that if you cannot attend for any reason, you do not get a refund for that meeting. Another thought is just to enter your dog, on the assumption that you are going to attend, you do not need to pay, and then when you know your movements, and find you cannot attend, just send a msg to the Race Secretary and you will be marked as scratched. You can enter online, the Race Secretary an entry form or even enter when attending a meet for the next meet as you check in. Registration on the day will open at 8 am and close at 8.45 am. If you are running late due to traffic, kids having a melt down, etc, just send either Nic or myself a text on or and we will mark you as attending, but running late. We realise that some of our members are shift workers and others have to drive a distance to attend and are happy to work with you in these cases. 9

Winter is officially here and it will get cold on the coursing field. The club has wonderfully warm Jackets with our logo on them. We currently have a few in stock that are going for $ These can be purchased at our next meeting, not sure of the sizes at this stage, but come see me on the 14th. I will be also taking orders if we don't have your size in stock, a deposit will be required. There may be a slight price increase for these ones, I will let you know on the day. We also have some Club Polos in stock, these cost $30. I have ordered Caps (we are totally out of stock of these), waiting on delivery date, but will take orders also for them if they have not arrived. Caps cost $15.00 A few members have expressed interest in vests as well and the committee is currently looking into this. If you are interested in maybe purchasing a vest, can you let me know, either by return or let me know at the next meet. This will give the committee an indication of the level of interest in this product. Sandra 10
