Sunshine Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club January 3, 2014 Judge Diane Sprung Thank you to the Sunshine Club members who choose me to judge your specialty and to the exhibitors who bought their lovely corgis to me. The club s hospitality was outstanding with attention to every detail. Although the club had to endure the late cancellation of their show hotel and site, the new hotel was nice and the venue was great with large rings and plenty of grooming space. Hats off to the club members who made it all happen. If you don t have this show on your list, I encourage you to add it and take a winter vacation, too! I want to thanks my ring steward, Leah James, who kept my ring moving. I will treasure my judge s gift, a painting of my young heart girl, Grace, by Kim Hundley. While I had many lovely corgis to choose from, there are a few things creeping into breeding programs that I am concerned about. I found several incorrect bites. I am not talking about a tooth being out of place or level bites, they were overshot, undershot and wry. In addition, particularly in the dogs, I found a number of very long loins with short rib cages and forward set shoulders. Some of these dogs had overly angled rears, making their movement very labored with fronts popping up to get out of the ways of the rears. This is a herding breed that should be able to work cattle all day. All of the Veterans were top corgis, capable of winning in competition anywhere. I loved my winners and felt that they represent what I look for in the breed beautiful outlines, outstanding light free movement, correct size and heads that are properly proportioned with correct eyes and expression. The following critiques are what I saw on the day. PUPPY DOGS 6 TO 9 MONTHS (5 entered, 0 absent) This class was a mixed bag with a lot of front issues 1. SUA MAH SWORD BEACH (Ch. Pemintenn Prezidentl Peaceprize x Sua Mah Pursuit of Happiness) Breeder/Owner Judy Hart. Lovely outline on this red and white puppy with good angles front to rear, nice arched neck, a good posternum, long ribcage, level topline and correct bone. He did not disappoint in his movement as he has free and easy side gait and is clean coming and going. Occasionally, he could stand slack in the front, but was clean moving at me. I was pleased to award him RESERVE WINNERS DOG. 2. DBW BEAT THE HEAT (GCh. Calloway Kimerick Knightcap x DBW Kimerics White Label) Breeder: Pam Williams. Owners: Kim Watson & Pam Williams. This puppy has lovely bone and coat with correctly shaped feet. He has a correct eye shape, but I would prefer a shorter muzzle and more chiseling under the eyes. His shorter rib cage, longer loin and upright shoulder made him wide coming at me and did not allow him to fully extend out when he moved. 3. SPRINGMILL FAST TALKIN DUDE (Ch. Greenwoods Fame and Fortune x Ch. Springmill Take a Bow) Breeder: Nancy Oehlhof & Dorothy Sanford. Owner: Nancy Oehlhof. This red and white puppy is low to the ground with a long, level topline. Unfortunately most of the length is in his loin. Because his shoulder is set forward, I found him wide coming at me and he was unbalanced on the move today. 4. CARWYN HE STOLE MY HEART (Ch. Greenwoods Ethan Allen x Ch. Carwyn Love at First Sight) Breeder/Owner: Macy Rogers. This baby puppy boy is oh so pretty standing and I thought he would be the winner of the class. He has an attractive head piece with correct proportions and chiseling under the eyes. He is low to the ground with correct bone and feet, but riding up in the rear. He is not balanced on the move due to his shorter upper arm, and he is unable to completely extend his lovely angled rear. Coming at me, he is wide and elbowing out on the day. PUPPY DOGS 9 TO 12 MONTHS (1 entered, 0 absent) 1. TRESAITH S CAPTAIN DOUGAN AT RIVERSIDE (GCh. Riverside Captain Orange x Triad Simply Siani at Tresaith) Breeder: Janet & William Richardson. Owners Rebecca Beard & Deborah Shindle. This red and white puppy boy has correct bone, lovely coat, and a good topline. While he is
balanced front to rear, I would like more angles on both ends. His head is pleasant and he has a kindly eye. 12 TO 18 MONTH DOGS (2 entered, 0 absent) 1. COVENTRY REIGN MAKER (GCh. Eden Crowns Designer Label x Ch. Coventry Helen of Troy) Breeder: Bill Shelton/Beckie Williams DVM/R & N Herrick & Steven Leyerly. Owners: Bill Shelton & Steven Leyerly & Beckie Williams, DVM. This red and white boy was beautifully groomed and presented a lovely picture standing. He is low to the ground with well-shaped bone going down into tight feet. He carries a level topline. While he is balanced front to rear, I would like more angles so he could cover more ground, and I would like more length overall to present the correct outline. 2. LAUREL PEACE KEEPER (Ch. Laurel Sharp Shooter x Laurel Sea Siren) Breeder/Owner: Frances Gammie. This red and white boy has a level topline and lovely coat and expression. His upright shoulder caused him to knuckle over in the front and did not allow him to fully extend on the move. BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOGS (2 entered, 0 absent) 1. TRI-UMPH TOP BILLING (Ch. Twinan Another Chance for Salvenik x Tri-umph Texfox Tribute to an Angel) Breeder: Marian Johnson Your & Sheila Pittfield. Owner: Marian Johnson Your. This red and white male is in full bloom with a lovely coat, masculine head, long ribcage, correct outline and strong topline standing and on the move. Although I would prefer a shorter muzzle, he has a very pleasing head and expression. He did not disappoint on the move and I was pleased to ultimately award him WINNERS DOG. 2. BJORNS BATMAN (GCh. Eweknow Bjorns Dream Maker x Donaway Bjorns Catch a Star) Breeder: Bjorn Lamborn & Dona Straway. Owner: Bjorn Lamborn. This tri boy was very exuberant for his handler today. He has adequate bone, but could have a tighter foot. Unfortunately, he left most of his coat at home today. I would like to see more length and substance. He has a level topline and was balanced front to rear. AMERICAN BRED DOGS (1 entered, 0 absent) 1. NORTHRUN TOPSIDER (Ch. Triple H Once in A Brew Moon x GCh. Northrun Smallcraft Warning) Breeder/Owner: Cathy Donovan. This red and white male has correct bone going down into correctly shaped feet. His topline is level. Although he is balanced, I would like to see more angles front to rear. He could use less fill under his eyes, but has a kindly expression. He used what he had well when he moved. OPEN DOGS (1 entered, 0 absent) 1. TIM TAM CALEB OF CLAIRE (Ch.. Tim Tam Diamond In The Rough x Tim Tam La Vie En Rose) Breeder: Claire & Larry McClure. Owner: Thomas Campana & Larry McClure This is a very handsome dog with a nice, masculine headpiece and beautiful expression. He has a level topline and is balanced front to rear. His bone is correct and went down into well shaped feet. He has a short loin and well sprung rib cage. I would prefer more length and angles at both ends to have better side gait, but he used everything he has and is a very nice masculine male. PUPPY BITCHES 6 TO 9 MONTHS (8 entered, 0 absent) Very nice puppy bitch class full of quality 1. SPRINGMILL LOOK WHO S TALKIN (Ch. Greenwoods Fame and Fortune x Ch. Springmill Take a Bow) Breeders: Nancy Oehlhof & Dorothy Sanford. Owner: Nancy Oehlhof. This puppy bitch has a correct head with beautiful chiseling under her eyes and a lovely expression. She has a well laid back shoulder with a matching rear allowing her to move freely around the ring showing off her lovely arched neck. Her loin is short and her ribcage is long. She could stand with her rear tucked under her from time to time. 2. LIONHART S CAMEO APPEARANCE (Ch. Ciregna That s Amore x Ch. Keepsake Smooth Jazz at Foxwood) Breeder/Owners: Daniel Hartman & Debbie Royster. Yet another beautiful bitch puppy with
a level topline, arched neck and correct angles front to rear. Her ribcage is long and well shaped and she has a short loin. While she moved well around the ring, on the day she was tiring and her front was giving out in the end. I hope this lovely girl does not continue to grow as she is well up on size for this class. 3. AYLESFORD PRIMARY SENSATION AT WIND DANCER (GCh. WindDancer Primary Color x Aylesford Celtic Crossing). Breeder/Owner: Mary DeToma & Elizabeth Mercer. Another lovely girl with a beautiful coat, long and low outline and lovely posternum. She has a little longer muzzle than the two above with a kind eye and lovely ears. She moved around the ring with purpose and covered the ground. 4. SUA MAH NORMANDY (Ch. Pemintenn Prezidentl Peaceprize x Sua Mah Pursuit of Happiness) Breeder/Owner: Judy Hart. Such a pretty baby. While a bit higher on leg than those above on the day giving her a squarer appearance, she carries correct bone into well shaped feet. Her ribcage is long and she has a short loin. Her angles are correct on both ends, allowing her to move around the ring covering the ground. She has the most delightful, inquisitive expression on her beautiful face. PUPPY BITCHES 9 TO 12 MONTHS (1 entered, 0 absent) 1. SANDFOX BOUGAINVILLEA (Ch. Rosewood Yankee Clipper x Ch. Sandfox Encore) Breeder/Owner: Vicki Sandage. I loved this scopy tri-color bitch with her level topline, long outline, long ribcage, short loin and angles to spare on both ends. When she moved, she was so light on her feet and her side gait ate up the ground. She has a lovely eye and nice back skull. It was a pleasure to award her RESERVE WINNERS BITCH, BEST PUPPY. One I would love to have in my home. 12 TO 18 MONTH BITCHES (3 entered, 1 absent) 1. CALLOWAY AND CROWN OLYMPIC FIRE (Ch. Triple H Tommy Lee Bodie x Calloway Parlor Ballet) Breeder: Pam Brannock. Owners: Linda & John Williams & Macy Rogers. This is a lovely, plush red and white bitch who has a correct long and low outline with a level back, long ribcage and short loin. She moved well around the ring and showed beautifully for her handler. I would prefer a shorter muzzle and while her white is within the standard, I would prefer less on her face. Another nice one. 2. LAUREL BENDS WITH THE WIND (Ch. Laurel Sharp Shooter x Laurel Sea Siren) Breeder/Owner: Frances Gammie. This red and white bitch was presented in good condition with a level topline, short hocks and good bone. She has a kindly eye. I would like to see better shoulder angles. BRED BY EXHIBITOR BITCHES (6 entered, 1 absent) 1. SUA MAH RED LETTER DAY (GCh. Hum nbird Groundhog Day x Ch. Sua Mah Uptown Girl). Breeder/Owner: Judy Hart. This oh so correct red and white bitch is a complete package for me. She is correct size and has a wonderful long and low outline. Her well laid back shoulder is matched by her stifle angulations. I loved her height to length ratio and her lovely arched neck. She had the foxiest of faces with correct 3 to 5 proportions and lovely chiseling under her beautiful eyes. With her lovely structure, she did not disappoint on the move with her light, fluid side gait. I was thrilled to award her first in this class, WINNERS BITCH, BEST OF WINNERS, BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR. The only fault I could find with her is she is not at my house! Congratulations to her breeder, 2. TALISMAN CABANA GIRL (Ch. Sua Mah Cabana Boy x Ch. Talisman Bimini Twist) Breeder/Owner: Jo Durrance. This is a very honest bitch who I liked a lot. She has correct bone going down into correct feet. She had a long, well sprung rib cage and short loin. She was balanced front to rear and moved well around the ring. Her expression was delightful. 3. BJORNS DONAWAY IRISH MELODY (Ch. Donaway s Orange Pop x Donaway Bjorns Catch a Star) Breeder/Owners: Bjorn Lamborn & Dona Straway. This bitch left her coat at home. She has more light under her than I would prefer and her height gives her the appearance of being square. She has a short loin and is balanced front to rear. She moved around the ring well for her handler. 4. NORTHRUN SMALL CRAFT CAUTION (Ch. Triple H Once in a Brew Moon x GCh. Northrun Smallcraft Warning) Breeder/Owner: Cathy Donovan. This red and white bitch has good bone going down into correct feet. She is moderate and has a short loin. While she was balanced front to rear, I
would like to see more angles at both ends. Her topline is level. It was not possible to adequately assess her movement as her handler was holding her back and she kept taking steps and hitting the end of the lead being brought up short. OPEN BITCHES (5 entered, 1 absent) 1. TALISMAN ISLAND GIRL (Ch. Sua Mah Cabana Boy x Ch. Talisman Bimini Twist) Breeder/Owner: Jo Durrance. Another honest bitch who I see is a sister to the 2 nd place Bred by Bitch. Much of the same comments apply to this bitch with her level topline, correct bone, well sprung and long ribcage and short loin. She had the most inquisitive and wonderful expression and moved around the ring freely. Lots to like. 2. BROOKHAVEN A SECRET NO MORE (Brookhaven Strangers in the Night x Brookhaven Our Little Secret) Breeders: Robert Rigwood & Kathleen Gangi. Owner: Ann Caterson. This stunning sable bitch has beautiful breed type and I thought she would be my winner. She has a plush coat, level topline, good bone and height to length proportions. I love her head and expression. Unfortunately, her upright shoulder causes her to take very small steps and her rear cannot fully extend. She won this placement on her exquisite breed type. 3. RIVERSIDE MAGIC AND MOONBEAMS. (Ch. Riverside Donaway Double C x Ch. Riverside all Clare Eweknow) Breeders: Candace Brown & Deborah Shindle. Owners: Kathy Gilchrest & Deborah Shindle. This red and white bitch is long and low with adequate bone. She has good breed type. I would prefer more lay back to the shoulder. 4. DONAWAY BJORNS CATCH A STAR (Ch. Byendebrok Maplecreek Baccarat x Ch. Sandyshire Phenomena) Breeder: Dona Straway & Patricia Sandy-Smith. Owners: Bjorn Lamborn & Dona Straway. This red and white bitch has a good neck and adequate posternum. She rode up in the rear standing and on the move. Her bone is adequate and she is a moderate bitch. I would like to see more underjaw on this girl. VETERAN DOGS (3 entered, 1 absent) 1. GCH. TALLYRAND HALO CHASER, ROM (Ch. Aberlee Bransby x Tallyrand Devoted to You) Breeder: Joseph & Lois Zelenski. Owner: Betty M. Cook. This is a dog I have judged before who still looks and acts like a youngster. He has a correct long and low outline with a level topline, short loin, long ribcage and correct angles at both ends. He is in lovely condition and moved around the ring effortlessly. He was very sassy with his handler and definitely exhibiting the bold piece of our standard. I was pleased to give him first place in this class and BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX. VETERAN BITCHES (3 entered, 0 absent) This was a stunning class of veteran bitches, all in excellent condition and each a top contender anywhere. 1. CH. SASSAPINE ALL THINGS NEW (Ch. Tallyrand No Greater Love x Ch. Tara Triad Singin in the Rain) Breeders: Amy Caple and Sandy Butler. Owners: Amy Caple & Marge Wilmarth. This red and white bitch is oh so correct with her correct size, long and low outline, level topline, correct bone and feet, beautiful arched neck and well proportioned head. When she moved around the ring she was light on her feet and floated taking her handler along for the wonderful ride! I was pleased to award her first place in this competitive class of lovely veterans, BEST VETERAN, BEST OF BREED. 2. GCH. LIONHART S FINN-ISH FIRST (Anwyl Winds O Change x Ch. Lionhart s Lady of the Lake) Breeder/Owners: Daniel Hartman & Debbie Royster. Yet another lovely veteran bitch. She has gorgeous sable color, a lovely outline with correct angles at both ends and a dead level topline, long ribcage and short loin. When she moved, she moved with ease. Another I liked a lot. 3. CH. CHIPPER HILLRISE HONEY N CREAM (Ch. Woodhenge Top Hat N Tails x Chipper s Dreams of the Heart) Breeder/Owner Barbara Zimmerman. Yet a third lovely veteran girl in great condition. She has a good outline, long ribcage and short loin with correct angles. She moved around the ring with ease and had a very pretty expression. I liked her a lot.
BEST OF BREED: CH. SASSAPINE ALL THINGS NEW. This bitch could not be denied as she showed her heart out showing off all of her beautiful assets and never put a foot down wrong. Lovely bitch. BEST OF WINNERS AND BEST PUPPY: SUA MAH RED LETTER DAY. This young bitch is perfection. She has had a great start and must have a great future ahead of her. BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX: GCH. TALLYRAND HALO CHASER, ROM. Even though he sassed his owner continually in the ring being a naughty boy, he showed me enough of his terrific qualities to earn Best of Opposite Sex. What a stallion he is! SELECT DOG: CH. BAYMOOR IMAGINATION, RN (GCH. Sandfox Cadenza x GCH. Baymoor Levitation, TD, PT, MX, MSB, MXJ, MJB, OF, VC) Breeder: Bonnie Hansen. Owners: Bonnie Hansen and Diane Hansen. Tri-color dog I have admired. He is a correct size, moderate dog with level topline, long ribcage and short loin. His bone is correct and he has correct height to length proportions. He moved around the ring with ease. SELECT BITCH: GCH. COVENTRY SWINGING ON A STAR (Ch. Woodbine Flashy Alibi x Ch. Coventry Spellbound) Breeder/Owners; William Shelton, Steve Leyerly & Beckie Williams. Lovely breed type in this tri-color bitch, who is correct size with a lovely, well proportioned head with a lovely eye. Her topline is level; she has a well sprung ribcage with a short loin. She was very balanced moving around the ring. One I liked a lot. AWARDS OF MERIT: GCH. SANDFOX KISMET (Dwynella Made by Design x Ch. Sandfox Destiny, PT) Breeders: Vicki Sandage, DVM and Deidra Rodgers. Owner: Vicki Sandage GCH. RIVERSIDE GET OVER IT (Ch. Aberlee Phantom Sequence x GCh. Riverside Wicked Wonderful, CGC) Breeder: Deb Shindle. Owners: Robert & KJ McIver & Deborah Shindle GCH. CALLOWAY KIMERICK KNIGHTCAP (Ch. Summertime Enchanted Knight x Ch. Calloway Parlor Ballet) Breeder: Pam Brannock. Owner: Eric & Kim Watson Judge: Arvind de Brasc BEST JUNIOR SHOWMAN (1 entered, 0 absent) CH. BUCKHORN MOJO DREW (Ch. Buckhorn Ledroc Scarlet Tide x Ch.
