May 2010 Operation Scarlet, Inc Chinese Shar-Pei Rescue of Lancaster, PA Scarlet s News INSIDE THIS ISSUE Operation Scarlet Presents Rescue Dog of the Year Award at 2010 Spring Luncheon Happy Tails, Page 7 We re Available, Page 6 Dawn Hertzog (L) and Gwen Goldfarb (R) present the Operation Scarlet 2010 Rescue Dog of the Year Award to Shrimp Goldfarb. From the Heart Page 2 Letters to Scarlet's News Page 12 Shrimp came to OS in 2008 along with her mother, Gabriella and her sister, Juniper, after they were left abandoned in their home. Shrimp had to face separation from her mother when she was adopted, followed by the loss of her sister to an acute intestinal issue. Shrimp was later found to have the same life threatening condition that claimed her sister's life. Shrimp's life was saved, thanks to the many donors who supported her and to Dr. Runnels, who performed the complicated surgery. Shrimp's will to live through this adversity has inspired all of us. Today, Shrimp is full of life, happy, healthy and has found a loving forever home with Gwen Goldfarb. Read more about Shrimp in the June 2009 Newsletter, pages 2-3.

Scarlet s News Page 2 From The Heart; the Quiet Little Guy Who Saved OS Herbie James arrived at the rescue on July 10, Herbie had been hit by a car in NYC and had multiple injuries. He had a back injury and a very nasty looking eye that had to be removed. Upon taking x-rays, it was also discovered that Herbie has no hip sockets. Just bone against bone rubbing together when the little guy walks. Herbie has battled a lot of adversity in his life and yet he always maintains a friendly, happy and sweet disposition. Herbie quickly began worming his way into my heart and before I knew it, he became a part of my family. Herbie is the kind of dog that can get lost in the shuffle. He does not bark when the doorbell rings, he does not run with the pack and he does not even demand attention. He is just there. Herbie enjoys the simple things in life and appreciates each day for whatever it might bring. Herbie blends well with the rest of the pack and never gets involved in any kind of confrontation. Other Pei have joined my family since he arrived and he accepts each one with a friendly wag of his tail. I could honestly say that Herbie would be classified as the perfect dog even with one eye missing he is still the perfect dog. I truly believe Herbie is a dog with a purpose. Since 2004 he has been living with me and has never been a bit of a problem. Always a gentleman, Herbie James is quite polite, doesn't get into any scuffles, rarely barks, and though he keeps away from the midst of the pack, he keeps track of whatever is going on at OS. One day his quiet, non-demanding demeanor changed to that of a demanding, boisterous, pay attention to me right now kind of dog. What created such a change in Herbie? Carol Smale continues the story... A few weeks ago, Dawn's day had slowed down a bit so she decided to take a break. She put the tea pot on and went into the living room to watch television and wait. Into a wandering mind came the thought that she could finish that short project on the computer upstairs. It would just take a minute or so. Two and a half hours later, Dawn was startled by a sound she had never heard before. She described it as "The most God awful warbling I've ever heard". From the hallway, she saw Herbie James at the lower step. He was warbling his heart out and didn't stop until Dawn started down the stairs.

Scarlet s News Page 3 Dawn was struck by the extreme heat in her kitchen and then found the remains of the teapot. The fire marshal told her that this could have been devastating as objects adjacent to a continuous heat source become so hot that they can combust in to flames. Herbie James knew what he had to do, plain old barking is as normal as breathing at OS and would not get Dawn's attention. But the warbling did and a tragedy was averted. This pretty smart guy saved both the animal and human lives. The idea of "What if" is unthinkable. This quiet little gift from Scarlet has the grit and heart of a giant. We recognize him as the hero he is and award him with a hero's medal. He certainly earned it. When Herbie senses his family is in danger, he certainly can step up to the plate and take immediate action. Herbie saved the day. Herbie saved my home. Herbie saved the rescue and the dogs within the rescue. Herbie James you are truly a Hero. Not just a Hero, but my Hero. Herbie James, thank you, thank you. We all are so very proud of you. God bless you. Dawn Hertzog (L) and Carol Smale (R) present Herbie James his hero medal and plaque. Herbie James accepted his award in his usual humble fashion. Dawn Herzog congratulates Herbie James.

Scarlet s News Page 5 Rainbow Bridge Tribute Merlot Fritschy Scruffy Mottolla Gino Brodhecker Scarlet continues to watch over these Shar-Pei as they cross over the Rainbow Bridge. In Memory of Su Ling Su Ling was a joy and a blessing to us. We could always count on her for a tail wag and her uplifting spirit. The Rowe Family Each month we will feature a tribute to a Pei that has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. If you would like to submit a tribute, please contact Dawn at OpScarlet@verizon.net Cocoa Mulch Warning Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do. Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it." *Snopes site gives the following information: * Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Scarlet s News Page 7 Happy Tails Roxy's Story Hello my name is Diamond Hoke & I want to tell my story. Around 7 mos. ago my previous family brought me to Dawn because I had a foot injury & they couldn't take care of me. I ended up at Operation Scarlet & even though I loved it there I was dreaming of my own family. Months went by & I couldn't understand why no one would even look at me, because I knew I was one gorgeous girl. I guess I was a little wild but I was just full of excitement. Well after Christmas my prayers were answered, Dawn got a call from my future parents that their beloved Jewel who they loved for 9 yrs. had died suddenly & this happened 2 days after my mom's birthday & 5 days before Christmas. My dad took her loss really hard. Mom searched Operation Scarlet's website & saw my picture & called to see if we could meet, even after she read I was their wild child, can you imagine that? They even put on the OS website that I was a "Diamond in the Rough". That did not scare them & the day we met I bounded through the room & planted big slobbery kisses on the whole family. I tried to be calm, but I kept forgetting my manners & jumped on everyone. It was love at first site for all of us, they adopted me, bad manners and all. Now I know why I was waiting so long, I was waiting for them, I love everyone, even the mail lady. One other thing, my name was Roxy when I was rescued but there was already a Roxy in the family whom I haven't met yet & I really don't look like a Roxy anyway so my mom & dad thought the best name for me would be Diamond because I am one heck of a "Diamond in the Rough". Joanna and Mick Hoke Enzo Rabbit Enzo, a normally dignified Pei, displayed his sense of humor to the delight of all of his friends and family. Enzo, without his rabbit ears, is pictured in the 2010 OS calendar for April Shar-Pei Rescued Since 1991

Star, who was rescued in 2008 by OS after having been left at an Arizona shelter and then at a Pennsylvania shelter. He arrived at OS with traumatic injuries and waited over a year to be adopted. He was awarded "Rescue Dog of the Year" in 2009 and was adopted a short time later. Shortly after his adoption, Star rescued his owner and received the OS Hero Award. Chyna is why I love getting up in the morning - just to say hello to her, give her breakfast and a hug. She does enjoy going to our winery (Hauser Estate Winery, Gettysburg); in fact, she looks at me, when I leave the house without her, as if "how can you go and leave me here? Are you going to the winery?" I've covered the bed in a spare bed-room where she can be the "queen" on her throne and watch what's going on outside the house [and guard it til I return] if I'm going somewhere I can't take her. Temperatures permitting, she goes everywhere with me. And when I go away overnight, I have someone stay at the house, so she can stay where she's familiar and comfortable. Chyna is a lucky little lady...and I'm just as lucky to have her find me!! And we're both lucky that Operation Scarlet and Dawn's devotion is active and thriving for the Shar Pei. Melinda Davis PS Look at my Chyna on the August 2010 calendar; she's a beauty! Read her "Happy Tails" story featured in the May 2009 Newsletter, page 5. Dear Aunt Dawn, Boy were we happy to hear I got picked for the OS calendar. That picture was taken in November and back then you told mommy to enter that picture into the contest. Yes all of us are enjoying life in SC. Mom is very relaxed since she isn't working. She plays this game called golf many times a week. While she plays golf Daddy goes to work right here in the house so all of us boys go into his office and keep him company. We get two walks a day. One walk that Divot and I take is around a lake and takes us 20 minutes to walk it. You might say we are in great shape. One funny thing I do (mom doesn't think it is so funny though), is that I have learned to slide the gate that is to keep us boys from going upstairs. When mom and dad leave together, I take my big nose and slide the gate over and then I go check out the upstairs. There are two really comfy beds that I will lay on for awhile. When I hear mom and dad come home I head back downstairs before they get into the house. I also mess up the bathroom carpets upstairs. It is my way of saying, please don't leave me. You should see Gus. That guy used to not like going outside. Now he is the last one to come back inside. He hasn't missed a walk since moving south too. When we lived in Enola, he used to go to the top of the stairs when he didn't want to walk. Now he is at that front door ready to go. Please give our love to all of our Shar-Pei friends looking for a home. Love Flash, Gus, Divot, Vander, Robin & Don
