Assessment Name Date Jakeeta spent time volunteering at her local hospital. She wrote this paper to describe what she learned from this experience. Read Jakeeta's paper, and look for revisions she should make. Then answer the questions that follow. Helping Others and Helping Myself (1) I am someone who really wants to become a physician. (2) I was thrilled when I received an opportunity to volunteer at Bartholomew Children's Hospital working as a clerical assistant. (3) Although the bulk of my work involves office duties such as copying, faxing, and filing, I also have been able to interview many of the physicians who work there. (4) I have asked them about their work, their education, and their particular responsibilities. (5) My research has helped me focus to three areas of medicine, one of which I plan to study in college. (6) The three most appealing medical fields I have encountered have been pathology, radiology, and sleep disorders.
(7) At the hospital, it is the job of pathologists to analyze the causes and effects of diseases through examining patients and their organs, bodily fluids, tissues, and cells. (8) By examining a patient's symptoms, pathologists can often identify the cause and help other physicians create an effective treatment plan for treating the patient. (9) Pathologists often work "behind the scenes"; that is, they do not spend much time with patients themselves, but work principally in the hospital's laboratories. (10) They do not have much face time with the patients they serve. (11) Pathologists still work closely with many people in the hospital, such as medical technologists, treating physicians, and other pathologists. (12) Their work is indispensable. (13) By identifying diseases early on, pathologists can give patients a better chance of recovery. (14) I think I would enjoy the work of a pathologist because I love solving mysteries. (15) Radiologists, like pathologists, diagnose diseases and other ailments. (16) Whereas pathologists typically use samples from patients' bodies to perform their diagnoses, radiologists use imaging. (17) In the past, this typically meant using x-rays; in fact, the word radiologist derives from x-ray radiology. (18) However, today, thanks to different technical advances, the radiologist has other imaging options at his or her disposal. (19) Radiologists can use x-rays to identify problems with organs and bones. (20) They can use computed tomography (or CT scan), positron emission tomography (PET scan), and magnetic resonance imagery (MRI). (21) Each of these tools can help the radiologist examine patients' bodies in different ways, searching for clues about a disease's
cause. (22) Radiology appeals to me chiefly because I love working with technology. (23) Another fascinating medical specialty that uses the latest technology is sleep medicine. (24) Sleep doctors work with diagnosing and treating patients with sleep disorders. (25) Sleep doctors use sophisticated sleep labs to pinpoint the causes of patients' sleeping problems and then devise a treatment plan based on their observations. (26) This field is especially intriguing to me because I am fascinated by the science of sleep and enjoy working directly with patients. (27) Volunteering at the hospital has been a wonderful experience for me. (28) While helping others, I have been able to help myself by learning first hand about some of the many diverse medical specialties encountered in a hospital. (29) Three of these specialties pathology, radiology, and sleep medicine are especially appealing for a variety of reasons. (30) Hopefully, by the end of my stint with the hospital, I will have narrowed my choices to one.
1 What is the most effective way to combine sentences 1 and 2? A B C D Even though I am someone who really wants to become a physician, I was thrilled when I received an opportunity to volunteer at Bartholomew Children's Hospital working as a clerical assistant. I am someone who really wants, became a physician, was thrilled, and received an opportunity to volunteer at Bartholomew Children's Hospital working as a clerical assistant. I am someone who really wants to become a physician, and I am someone who I was thrilled when I received an opportunity to volunteer at Bartholomew Children's Hospital working as a clerical assistant. As someone who really wants to become a physician, I was thrilled when I received an opportunity to volunteer at Bartholomew Children's Hospital working as a clerical assistant. 2 Sentence 8 is redundant and ineffective. What is the best way to revise this sentence? F G H J By examining a patient's symptoms, pathologists can often identify the cause of the symptoms and help other physicians create an effective treatment plan for treating the patient's symptoms. By examining a patient's symptoms, pathologists can often identify the cause and help other physicians create an effective treatment plan. By examining a patient's symptoms, pathologists can often identify them and help others create one for treating them. By examining, pathologists can often identify the cause and help other physicians.
3 What is the most effective way to combine sentences 10 and 11? A B C D Although they do not have much face time with the patients they serve, pathologists still work closely with many people in the hospital, such as medical technologists, treating physicians, and other pathologists. Either they do not have much face time with the patients they serve, or pathologists still work closely with many people in the hospital, such as medical technologists, treating physicians, and other pathologists. They do not have much face time with the patients they serve because pathologists still work closely with many people in the hospital, such as medical technologists, treating physicians, and other pathologists. Working closely with many people in the hospital, such as medical technologists, treating physicians, and other pathologists, the patients they serve do not have much face time with pathologists. 4 Jakeeta wants to improve the transition between the second paragraph (sentences 7-14) and the third paragraph (sentences 15-22). Which sentence could best precede sentence 15 and help improve this transition? F G H J A special subset of radiology is fluroscopy, which uses x-rays displayed on a closed-circuit television to display real-time images. A PET scan, or positron emission tomography, can produce a three-dimensional image of a patient's internal organs. X-rays were first systematically studied by German physicist Wilheim Rontgen in Another medical specialty at the hospital concerned with uncovering mysteries is radiology.
5 What is the most effective way to combine sentences 19 and 20? A B Not only can radiologists use x-rays to identify problems with organs and bones, but they can also use computed tomography (or CT scan), positron emission tomography (PET scan), and magnetic resonance imagery (MRI). Radiologists can use x-rays to identify problems with organs and bones, whether they can use computed tomography (or CT scan), positron emission tomography (PET scan), and magnetic resonance imagery (MRI). C Before radiologists can use x-rays to identify problems with organs and bones, they can use computed tomography (or CT scan), positron emission tomography (PET scan), and magnetic resonance imagery (MRI). D Radiologist can use x-rays to identify problems with organs and bones, using computed tomography (or CT scan), positron emission tomography (PET scan), and magnetic resonance imagery (MRI). 6 Jakeeta wants to add the following sentence to the fourth paragraph (sentences 23-26). These disorders include narcolepsy, a disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness; insomnia, or the inability to sleep; sleep apnea, abnormal breathing during sleep; and many other types of disorders. Where is the best place to insert this sentence? F after sentence 23 G after sentence 24 H after sentence 25 J after sentence 26
Read the selection, and choose the best answer to each question. Anita feels strongly about the community's need for a dog park. She wrote this letter to her city council representative to persuade her to work toward establishing such a park. Proofread Anita's letter, and look for any mistakes she has made. When you finish reading, answer the questions that follow Keller Parkway Jackton, TX Barb Evers Councilwoman for District 10 Jackton City Council 3423 City Hall Drive Jackton, TX Dear Councilwoman Evers, We all know Jackton is a terrific town. It consistently appears in national publications lists of best places to live, go to school, work, and raise a family. One reason our quality of life is so good is that our city offers many diverse activities. For example, we have Fireside Mall, City Center Entertainment District, the Robert J. Braningham Nature Preserve, and the fascinating Jackton Crater. These destinations enrich the lives of the people who live here and those who visit. However, there is one thing we desperately need in Jackton: a dog park where citizens can take their dogs and let them run leash free to mingle with other dogs. A dog park would provide a place for dogs to socialize, offer a safe environment for dogs and owners, and let dog-oriented people interact.
A dog park would provide dogs the opportunity to socialize with other dogs. Many dogs live with their owners in homes or apartments and do not have the opportunity to interact with other dogs. However, veterinary researchers believe that dogs should interact regular with other dogs to avoid becoming antisocial and aggressive. Dogs are descended from wild canine species such as wolves. Like wolves, they have a hardwired tendency to be social animals and to enjoy the company of other dogs. Without this ongoing interaction, a dog may become lonely for canine companions. A dog park would provide our canine friends with much-needed socialization and give them a chance to learn how to play appropriately with other dogs. In Jackton, it is ilegal to walk a dog off a leash along roadsides and in city parks. While this wise ordinance protects both dogs and people, it also creates a problem: there are times when dogs need to roam, run, sniff, mingle, and explore beyond the limits of a leash. Teaching a dog to walk and obey on a leash is every owner's responsibility; however, dog owners should also have a place to allow their dogs to run free without the possibility of problems. A well-planned dog park with fences, gates, and other security measures would allow owners the space to let their dogs roam free, while keeping them safe from dangerous cars on busy streets. Finally, a dog park would help dog owners come together to share their common interests, enriching the social milieu of Jackton. Hundreds of Jackton residents own dogs, yet many of these residents know little about one another. Dog owners share many common traits: they are animal lovers;
they spend quality time with their dogs; they are concerned about the health and welfare of their pets. Providing a safe place for these residents to be together would allow them to bond and to share ideas with one another. Families, singles, and couples could get acquainted or renew old friendships. These relationships can make Jackton a more secure, caring, and involved community. Thus, a new Jackton dog park would bring our community together by giving dog owners a chance to meet and mingle. With the recent decommissioning of great hills municipal golf course, Jackton is flush with relatively undeveloped parkland. The Jackton City Council should consider using a portion of this newly available parkland to construct a state-of-the-art dog park. Doing so would allow dogs to socialize with one another. It would allow them to exercise freely without the constraint of leashes. It would also let their owners get to know one another, encouraging the formation of an involved community of like-minded citizens. Please consider adding this item to your next council agenda so that you might receive public feedback on a plan for a new dog park. I think you will be surprised at how popular this idea actually is among your constituency. sincerely yours, Anita Lincoln

Read the information in the box below. In many tropical nations, native rain forests are being cleared to create land for farming and ranching. Scientists estimate that about 200,000 acres of tropical rain forest are lost each day. As a result, we lose hundreds of species of plants and animals every year, many of which may have incalculable benefits for humans. For instance, some rain forest plants may hold the key to important medicines. On the other hand, tropical ranchers and farmers believe they have a right to make money from their land by clearing their forests. The loss of important resources like rain forests can change our planet forever. Think carefully about this statement. Write an essay explaining how the loss of natural resources could affect the planet. Be sure to clearly state your thesis organize and develop your ideas effectively choose your words carefully edit your writing for grammar, mechanics, and spelling
STAAR CONNECTION Diagnostic Series EOC English I Writing TEKS Writing Alignment Chart and Cross-Curricular Alignments KAMICO supports cross-curricular teaching strategies and encourages efforts to apply, transfer, and integrate knowledge across multiple content areas. Therefore, many assessments in this writing book reinforce at least one social studies and/or science TEKS. For each grade or course, TEA has identified some of the TEKS eligible to be assessed on STAAR as readiness standards. These readiness standards will be emphasized on the STAAR assessments. The remaining TEKS eligible to be assessed on STAAR are considered supporting standards. Although supporting standards will be assessed, they will not be emphasized on STAAR. KAMICO has shown whether each question assessed in this book is aligned to a readiness standard or a supporting standard. Readiness standards are essential for success in the current grade or course, are important for preparedness for the next grade or course, support college and career readiness, necessitate in-depth instruction, and address broad and deep ideas. Supporting standards, although introduced in the current grade or course, may be emphasized in a subsequent year, may be emphasized in a previous year, play a role in preparing students for the next grade or course but not a central role, and address more narrowly defined ideas.
