a humane society starts with you
For 60 years, The Humane Society of the United States has made unprecedented change for animals. We ve taken on the biggest fights wherever we find them: on the ground, in the boardroom, in the courts and on Capitol Hill. And we work to change public opinion by bringing issues of animal cruelty out of the shadows. We ve made momentous progress already, but we re setting our sights even higher. With your help, our 60th anniversary campaign will raise $60 million, enabling us to create even more transformational change for animals. Although we and our affiliates provide hands-on care and services to more than 100,000 animals every year, our goal has always been to enact change by attacking the root causes of animal cruelty. We target institutions and practices that affect millions and even billions of animals like factory farms, puppy mills, inhumane wildlife management programs and animal-testing labs and work to become part of the solution. We offer alternatives and help develop more humane practices to ensure lasting change. Our staff is comprised of experts in their fields, whose technical knowledge is matched only by their compassion for animals. We ve done so much already. We ve made sweeping policy and business changes, from making animal cruelty a felony in all 50 states (up from just four states in the mid-1980s) to convincing more than 100 major food retailers to remove extreme confinement of farm animals from their supply chains. We ve galvanized the public to push for reform, and we ve never been better placed to take on the issues that still exist. HSUS VICTORIES 115,851 Animals cared for by The HSUS and affiliates this year through cruelty interventions, spay/neuter and vaccination programs, sanctuaries, wildlife rehabilitation and more 58,239 Pets spayed or neutered as part of World Spay Day 2.9+ MILLION Messages that our supporters sent to government and corporate decision-makers 139 State and local laws, regulations and ordinances passed to help animals More than any other animal welfare organization, we have the reach and the power to make changes that affect millions of animals nationwide. We ve gained momentum every year, and we ve reached a tipping point. During the next five years, we intend to push animal welfare even further into the public consciousness and enact changes that will affect millions more of our fellow creatures. The time to act is now. Read on for the details. We hope that you will join us in creating transformational change for animals and staying the course until reform is realized. 1.4 MILLION U.S. farm animals spared the misery of factory farms and slaughter plants as a result of our meat-reduction campaign
FROM THE PRESIDENT The Humane Society of the United States transforms animal lives every day. For more than 60 years, we ve confronted animal cruelty wherever we find it. We re poised to take our work to the next level with your help. The $60 million we will raise through this five-year campaign will drive reform in key areas where we ve reached a tipping point. Five themes will guide our work: Implementing 21st century solutions to move away from cruel and archaic practices Transitioning to a humane economy that syncs our commercial and social behavior with our core values concerning the proper treatment of animals Expanding the notion of civil society throughout the world by promoting kindness to animals, while working to upgrade legal standards Broadening our campaigns globally and scaling them up accordingly Taking animal protection to the next level to achieve even more meaningful gains in the biggest and most urgent areas of need With these themes in mind, we ve identified five areas where we re on the verge of big change. We ve developed realistic, achievable action plans with five-year milestones and metrics. In summary, we will focus on helping pets in poverty, stopping animal cruelty around the world, advancing alternatives to cruel cosmetic and toxicity testing, changing the course for farm animals and forging a new wildlife management paradigm. I m confident The HSUS can achieve these goals. Our record of change is unmatched by similar organizations, and we re at a crucial point in history. With this campaign and with your support we can build on that record and expand our reach. ABOVE: Wayne Pacelle with his adopted dog, Lily. ON THE COVER: In Puerto Rico, we re working with Humane Society International to drastically reduce the street dog population by promoting spay/ neuter and adoption. #1 HIGHEST impact animal protection nonprofit Philanthropedia, a division of Guidestar Please join us. Together, we can achieve groundbreaking transformational change for animals. Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO The Humane Society of the United States
$22.3 MILLION Makes It Possible Hundreds of thousands of companion animals stand to benefit from our efforts. Helping Pets in Poverty We ve made great strides in providing services to underserved communities, stopping puppy mills, fighting for retail sales restrictions and working globally to manage street dogs humanely. Yet U.S. shelters have great dogs and cats available for loving families, some communities have shockingly low spay and neuter rates and large-scale commercial dog breeders produce 2 million puppies annually, flooding the market and displacing adoptable shelter pets. Worldwide, million dogs live on the street. We can do more to help these animals. Expand our enormously successful Pets for Life mentorship program, helping 200,000 animals in five years. Reduce by 200,000 the number of puppies produced by puppy mills by strengthening animal welfare standards, restricting retail sales of puppy mill dogs and persuading pet stores to promote adoption of homeless animals. Extend our international street dog initiative to vaccinate and sterilize more than a million street dogs and convince more governments to stop culls.
$4.4 MILLION Expands Our Reach Pets for Life brings necessary veterinary treatment and resources to underserved areas. Helping Pets in Poverty: Expanding Pets for Life In the United States, one in six households meets the definition of poverty. While 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year, an estimated 3 to 4 times that number 23 million pets live in poverty in the United States, many with no access to affordable veterinary care. Just as there are food deserts without grocery stores, there are animal care deserts with no veterinarians or spay and neuter services. Our Pets for Life program provides critical services to pets in underserved communities. Expand our Pets for Life mentorship program to 40 markets, spanning the country. Help 200,000 pets in poverty through spay/neuter, vaccinations, dog training and wellness resources bringing critical veterinary services to communities who cannot access them now. Provide a model program to solve animal issues before pets end up in shelters. Offer educational resources to groups interested in learning from us without a formal mentorship.
$5.8 MILLION Intensifies the Pressure Puppy mill dogs, especially females, often languish in cages without any human contact. Helping Pets in Poverty: Stopping Puppy Mills Even as U.S. shelters struggle to place animals, large-scale commercial dog breeders churn out some 2 million puppies annually. Breeding dogs live in small wire cages with no veterinary care, socialization or human companionship. We ve cracked down on the industry. Now it s time to ratchet up the pressure. Reduce by 200,000 the number of puppies produced in U.S. puppy mills. Fortify Animal Welfare Act standards, strengthen laws in all 50 states and ensure that the 25 largest cities all have restrictions on the sale of puppy mill dogs. Partner with Maddie s Fund on an aggressive online advertising campaign targeting consumers looking to purchase a puppy and redirecting them to responsible sources. Convert 25 pet stores from selling puppies to supporting adoption of homeless animals in their communities.
$12.1 MILLION Saves More Lives With spay/neuter programs, we can drastically reduce street dog populations without harming animals. Helping Pets in Poverty: Protecting Street Dogs Around the world, an estimated million dogs live on the streets, with many governments resorting to culls to protect citizens from dog attacks and rabies. Use the success of our programs to secure commitments from an additional 10 countries to implement the Humane Society International street dog program model. Expand our innovative street dog initiative to humanely catch, vaccinate and sterilize more than a million street dogs, in India, Mauritius and Puerto Rico. Sterilize at least 70 percent of the dogs in our target areas to stabilize population growth.
$7.4 MILLION Can Do So Much Even after the fight is over, dogfighting dogs aren t safe. They sometimes die from their wounds or are killed if they lost the fight. Ending Global Animal Cruelty About 120 countries do not prohibit dogfighting. A fifth of the world s nations lack even a basic anti-cruelty statute. Many notorious U.S. dogfighting kingpins and kennels sell dogs internationally for fights in other countries. Building on our success at making dogfighting and malicious cruelty to animals a felony in all 50 states, we ll export this successful approach internationally. Expand our network of offices and representatives into 20 new countries with the gravest cruelty problems and the best opportunities to solve those problems. Ban dogfighting in 10 countries and reduce dogfighting by 15 percent in Costa Rica and the Philippines, as measured by raids, arrests and dogfighting rings dismantled. Dismantle 30 of the largest organized dogfighting networks in the United States.
$5.8 MILLION Builds Momentum Science offers promising new approaches to cosmetics and toxicity testing, saving animals from torturous lives in labs. Advancing Science Without Suffering Millions of animals are used in cosmetic and toxicity tests worldwide, despite growing recognition of flaws inherent in such tests. We ve already partnered with Procter & Gamble to develop AltTox.org, a site dedicated to advancing non-animal methods of toxicity testing. We can build on that momentum to promote 21stcentury science and speed the adoption of alternatives. Ban testing cosmetics on animals or enact import/sales bans of animal-tested cosmetics in three major markets and make progress toward ending mandatory cosmetics animal testing in China. Promote the adoption of animaltesting alternatives in international industry regulations. Accelerate the development of next-generation animal-testing alternatives by steering public and private funding toward non-animal technologies.
$16.3 MILLION Escalates the Fight By working with major corporations and institutions, we can improve living conditions for billions of animals. Championing Farm Animal Welfare In the United States, millions of breeding pigs and egg-laying hens are kept in metal cages where they are virtually immobilized for their entire lives. Demand for meat is rising internationally, and factory-farming practices are spreading to the developing world. In the U.S., we ve worked with more than 100 major retailers and the biggest names in the food industry to remove extreme confinement practices from their supply chains, and helped more than 100 school systems nationwide go meatless on Mondays, like the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Houston Independent School District. It s time to expand our reach abroad. Pass two major anti-confinement initiatives and work with U.S. farmers and retailers to move a billion animals to higher welfare standards. Implement meat-reduction policies at hundreds of institutions across the U.S., such as school districts, hospital chains, corporate cafeterias and more. Launch Meatless Monday in five Asian cities and persuade five multinational corporations to make Asian operations crate-free. Work through the finance sector to move 100 million animals out of extreme confinement in Central Asia and stem the introduction of such systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.
$8.2 MILLION Leads the Way We re at the forefront of humane wildlife management, and we re ready to share our knowledge. Resolving Wildlife Conflicts Wild animals have suffered too much, for too long, because of outdated, destructive and lethal solutions to human-wildlife conflicts. We need humane, science-based approaches to coexisting with our wild neighbors. We re on the forefront of this research, carrying out innovative deer immunocontraception research projects in partnership with leading veterinary medicine schools. Help four wildlife rehabilitation centers, animal control facilities or shelters reduce wild animal intake and train 300 local groups on urban wildlife conflicts annually. Establish professional principles and training through the Humane Wildlife Control Association. Register long-acting ZonaStat-H and PZP immunocontraception in 10 states. Treat 5,000 wild mares with ZonaStat-H immunocontraceptive and reduce the number of government-held wild horses and burros by helping find them homes. Pass four state laws requiring consideration of non-lethal methods, implement 10 humane management community plans and replace five lethal programs with fertility control. Combat the use of abusive practices and lethal control of wildlife, such as steel-jawed leghold traps and toxic poisons.
Every animal deserves a chance to live a life free of pain and suffering. You can make that possible. At The Humane Society of the United States, we think big. We set ambitious goals, and we have a proven record of meeting them. Our 60th anniversary campaign is one of our most ambitious projects yet. Its scope is broad; its vision lofty. But we re confident that we can enact this transformational change we must, for the sake of the animals. It s no stretch to say that hundreds of millions of animals will benefit, from dogs languishing in puppy mills in Missouri to farm animals suffering from extreme confinement in Central Asia. Few opportunities exist to help enact change on such a vast scale, to touch so many lives and transform them for the better. Becoming a part of our anniversary campaign gives you this unique and powerful chance. By grounding our campaign in specific goals and achievable steps, we re setting ourselves up for success at this most crucial tipping point in our work. We know you share our vision of a more humane and compassionate world for animals, and we need your help. Join our campaign to achieve even more transformational change for animals. We can t do it without you.
