1 Border Terrier Canada 2017 National Specialty & Earthdog Tests Skerryvore, Plattsville July 6, 2017 (Earthdog) Festival Inn, Stratford, July 7th, 2017 (Conformation) I would like to briefly thank all the BTC members and exhibitors for making our 2017 Specialty in Stratford a resounding success. In the absence of our site coordinator, Rosemary Shoreman, who unfortunately was unable to attend the show, several members pitched in to make the show run like a well-oiled engine. The weather was fairly kind, and the rain stopped just in time for Kate Irving to preside over the sweepstakes ring and stayed nice for the entire day while Ronnie Irving judged the regular classes. From the Welcome Potluck to the BBQ and Banquet a fantastic time was had by all and it was good to see friends old and new. Mark your calendars for July 6, 2018 and come enjoy the special Maritime hospitality of Cape Breton Island. 2 2017 BTC Specialty Earthdog Tests Results BTC held two days of Training and Tests at Skerryvore, in Plattsville Ontario, the residence of Chikki and Dick Mair. The Mairs kindly provided the use of their beautiful property to Border Terrier Canada and were great hosts to the several dozen dogs and their people who attended: Border Terriers, Cairns and Dachshunds of all ages and levels. The two days were a tremendous success, with people and their beloved canines traveling great distances to Plattsville from all parts of Canada and the USA. A full day of training followed by a full day of tests made for a very busy event for judges and volunteers alike. A big thank you to our judges Pam Dyer, Jane McLaughlin, Camilla Moon and Susan Storey, who all worked extremely hard giving good natured encouragement and guidance regardless of the heat and the mosquitoes. 3 2017 Specialty & Sweepstakes Results and Critiques It was a great pleasure for Kate and myself to be invited to judge the Border Terrier Canada National Specialty 2017 at Stratford Ontario and - what a great venue the Festival Inn was for such an event. The hotel was good for exhibitors. The space for RV s also seemed excellent and the area for the show ring was first class. Our thanks to everyone for their kind hospitality and particularly to the organisers and our ring steward for the efficient way that we were kept on track. It was such a pity that Rosemary Shoreman who had put so much into the organisation of the Specialty, was unable to attend because of the injury sustained as a result of her fall. It is great however to hear that she continues to make good progress and we are sure that all would wish to thank her for her efforts leading up to the event, and wish her well for a full and speedy recovery. The entry of 53 dogs in the regular show and 19 in Sweepstakes was excellent. I felt that overall the quality was very good. Heads were, by and large, good with plenty of exhibits with enough breadth of skull and shortness and strength of muzzle. Not too many had the excessive stop that often leaves the breed with rather large round eyes. Front movement left a good deal to be desired and this is a problem for the breed in most parts of the world. It is sometimes caused by poor shoulders but often poor front action appears even in dogs whose shoulders are OK usually because the hind angulation is over exaggerated and out of balance with the front assembly thus causing untidy front movement. In Canada, we felt that there were rather too many exhibits with long thin tails that did not fit the standard requirement for the tail of a Border to be Moderately short, thick at the base, then tapering. Thanks go to all of the exhibitors who took our decisions and behaved in a very sportsmanlike fashion. Owner: Jayne & Mary Christie. a pleasing youngster whose coat is coming in well for his age and is good in texture. Long enough in body, OK in head for his age with enough skull and not too much stop, a bit long in tail. Moved well behind with enough turn of stifle and moved reasonably in front CANADIAN BRED DOG 1st 023 CROFTERSLEE COUNTY ROADS JE, BW589974, 11/27/2014, Breeder: Celia Blair, by Faireview Mile Marker ex Ch Achouffe Baycrofterslee, JE CGN, Canada. Owner: Astrid Pollock. OK in head and eye, plenty of strength of muzzle. OK in neck but could be better in topline and fell away a bit over the tail. OK in proportions, very good muscle behind and moved well there. Good tight feet. Coat could be a bit harsher.

Tack. a very good dog with an extremely strong head and muzzle but which had an excellent topline, good proportions, OK in tail and tailset. Good rib carried well back. Better for size than 2. Very well muscled and moved really well behind and OK in front. Coat OK. Owner: Margaret Henning, Kathleen Henning. strong skull, a little bit up on the leg and could be a shade shorter in loin. Moved out well behind though single tracking a bit in front. Good bone and OK in ribs though these could be carried slightly further back. Owner: Philipa Sahiner. a biggish dog but moved very soundly. A bit difficult to span but had a good harsh coat. OK in head and had a good outline and topline. Tail set OK but could be a bit shorter. Good neck and kept his topline well when moving around the ring. Very thick skin though his coat could be a shade harsher. Pleasing movement behind and good in tail. The morning rain gave way to a beautiful day to match the beautiful setting. With our biggest entry to date, competition was fierce but friendly

She was good in outline and proportions Good small compact feet, good bone and enough muscle on hindquarters. Good coat. Matheson a very pleasing blue and tan dog shown in really good coat and having an excellent thick skin. He is OK in head but scores most in neck topline and general outline. He moved truly, going well both in front and behind and he holds his shape well in profile when going around the ring. He is also good in tail and tailset. He is good in rib and can be spanned. A dog without over exaggeration and fitting the standard in so many ways.

The veteran entry was particularly impressive. So many old dogs showing so well and enjoying their day out. PUPPY SWEEPSTAKES JUNIOR PUPPY DOG 1st 035 GREYWOODE VERDIN, Dog, Owner: Jayne & Mary Christie Just over six months and very much a baby. Pleasing head for age and has a good eye. Excellent pelt and coat and good topline. Rather long in body and tail. Moved well behind but a little loose in front MONTH DOG 1st 045 OTTERMASK MR SELFRIDGE, Dog, Owner: Suzanne Stebbins Ottermask Mr Selfridge. A correct sized dog with a pleasing head. Failed in topline when moving and is wide in front. Has an excellent coat and good tail. JUNIOR PUPPY BITCH 1st 010 FAIREVIEW WARNING TRACK, Bitch, Owner: Margaret Henning, Kathleen Henning, Arnold Henning Rather a biggish bitch and long in body. Attractive head, correct skull and short muzzle. Coat coming in and has a good pelt. Moved quite well and has a good tail. 2nd 024 ZEALOUS MY BEST TO YOU, Bitch, Owner: Pearl Humenny Smaller bitch but well proportioned. Pleasing head. Subject to CKC approval, the 2018 Border Terrier Canada Specialty will be held on beautiful Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia in conjunction with the Cape Breton Kennel Club shows, July 6-8, This means in addition to our Specialty and all the trimmings, there will be 4 all breed shows (making five sets of points for Borders), 3 Rally Trials and 2 Obedience Trials. Our puppy and veteran sweepstakes judge is Su Williams (Hollybridge Border Terriers, UK) and (subject to CKC approval) our Conformation judge will be Nancy Hogg (Raeburnfoot Border Terriers, UK) There is RV Parking on site with electric and water available at a very reasonable cost, and we are exploring a host hotel offering rooms at under $100 a night. There are also local kennels offering day boarding so that you can go sight seeing! All this on top of the opportunity to turn your specialty trip into a memorable vacation. Explore the spectacular Cape Breton Highlands including the world-famous Cabot Trail. History buffs can check out the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site near the quaint but bustling village of Baddeck, and fans of the late Stuart McLean, host and story teller at the Vinyl Café, can pay a visit to Grand Narrows the real-life inspiration for Big Narrows, featured in many of the Dave and Morley stories, but don t blink or you will miss it.
