1 7 Newf Tales Fourth Quarter December 10, 2011 Editor: Mary Broihier South Central Newfoundland Club, Inc. President s Column Susan Kerby, SCNC President How did you get your first Newfoundland? Where did you buy your next Newfoundland? What guided those decisions? Taking a ride at Dull s Christmas Tree Farm. (Photo courtesy of Virginia Davis.) In this Issue President s Column. 1 Member & Official Club News Water Test.. 4 SCNCR Christmas Tree Pull... 5 Brags... 7 Advertisements... 9 We all start somewhere, but we learn as we go and when we know better, we should do better. My first Newfoundland was found in an ad in the local newspaper and was the love of my life. My next Newfoundlands were purchased from reputable NCA (Newfoundland Club of America) Breeders. I soon learned the benefits of buying a puppy from a reputable breeder. Although I could spend hours explaining the benefits of reputable breeders, I prefer emphasize the downside of supporting BYB (Back Yard Breeders). There is a huge difference between a dedicated NCA breeder and a BYB. Shelters and Rescues are full of dogs that were bred by Back Yard Breeders, puppy Newf Tales, Q Page 1 South Central Newfoundland Club, Inc., December 10, 2011
2 mills, pet stores and people who just thought they would breed just one litter because they love their dog. The typical reason given to purchase from a less than reputable breeder is that the buyer wants a puppy immediately and so contacts anyone who has a puppy at the time. Little do they know that with disreputable breeders there is no planning for soundness, no concern for what happens to the parents of the litter and disregard for the rest of the litter or the ones that don t sell quickly. Sadly, I ve repeatedly seen people who are very supportive of our Rescue work give their hard-earned money to a known Back Yard Breeder who had an available puppy when they wanted it. On the one hand, they are a great home, support our Rescue cause and love Newfoundlands. On the other hand, they just motivate the Back Yard Breeder to breed more, increasing the need for Rescue. All Newfies deserve a great home and I m happy for the ones I ve seen get that. But giving a Back Yard Breeder or a Puppy Mill money only helps them justify what they are doing. Newfoundland puppies produced by a reputable breeder have their hearts checked by a Board Certified Cardiologist at 10 weeks of age. Bite inhibition is learned between seven and nine weeks of age while they are still with their littermates and mom. An NCA breeder has a commitment to the puppies they breed for life. Please talk with the breeders you are considering and gauge how committed they are to the health and future of our beloved breed. Are they available for you and your Newf through its entire life? How many senior dogs do they have or know where they are living? Are they working to improve our breed or are they only breeding to produce puppies? When we know better, we need to do better. Please make plans now for that next puppy purchase. Supporting Back Yard Breeders only helps create more Back Yard Breeders. In turn, they create the majority of the dogs that Rescue organizations have to take in. To date, SCNRescue has taken in only two Newfoundlands from reputable breeders in the last four years handling 200 Newfoundland Rescues. There is a difference! Baloo loved working, going for rides, swimming in Lake Michigan, playing soccer, and reading for treats. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, clients, and community. SCNC member Catherine Osborne has participated in Delta Society s Pet Partners with Baloo since early 2005, in her work as a mental health therapist. Baloo worked in multiple settings, including foster care, family service agencies, schools, residential treatment facilities and outpatient clinics. She inspired empathy, understanding and healing. In 2006, Baloo and Catherine received the prestigious Beyond Limits Award for practicing professional Delta Society Pet Partners team. But, we still needed to keep the water stewards warm, so we took a page from last year s trial and wrapped a tarp around the lifeguard shelter and set up a propane heater. This day was set up for WRDX and Senior requalifiers. We had a total of seven entries for the day three WRDX and four Senior requalifiers. There were many fine performances resulting in two qualifiers, one in WRDX and one in WRD requalification. WRDX: WA Glenauldyn s Optical Illusion, CGC,RE,CDX,TDD,WRDX,DD1,WRD2 (Mikal) Owner/Handler: Cynthia Kursner WRD Requalification: Aqua s Hugo Out N About WRD (Dazzler) Owner/Handler: Karen Schlipf The weekend of September 24 th and 25 th, 2011 was SCNC s fourth year for WD/WRD, our third year for WRDX and our first year for the WRD requalifying event at Lakewood-Rogers Park in Valparaiso, Indiana. The park is on 122 acres just north of Valparaiso, Indiana, about Newf Tales, Q Page 4 South Central Newfoundland Club, Inc., December 10, 2011
5 Sunday, September 25, 2011 Though Sunday s weather was beautiful, even better than Saturday, it was still cool enough for water stewards to appreciate the propane heater. Sunday was designated as the day for Junior and Senior dogs and handlers, with seven entrants in each category, one requalifier in Junior and two requalifiers in Senior. As on the previous day, the stewards did their jobs wonderfully. Entrants and dogs both did their best resulting in two qualifiers, on each in both Junior and Senior. WD: Ebb Tide s Gaelea,WD,UD (Angelika) Owner/Handler: Phyllis Vail Wendell WRD: VN CH Council Cup s Total Eclipse of Culpepper,CD,DD2,WRD1,RE,CGC,TT (Clipper) Owner/Handler: Barbara Lukacs Grob The water test committee extends its sincere thanks to judges Mike Lovett and Lawren Coulam for judging our Saturday trial and to Sandee Lovett and Lawren Coulam for judging our Sunday trial. Thanks also to all the stewards and volunteers for the hard work and shivering necessary to conduct a water test! From Our Sister Organization: South Central Newfoundland Rescue (SCNR), Inc. Virginia Davis Happy Holidays from SCNRescue! It has been another busy year with the Rescue arm of SCNC growing beyond what was ever imagined. Our 2011 Christmas Tree Pull was an unqualified success. In terms of donations and support it was our most prosperous to date. Despite the wind and rain, we counted over 75 Newfoundlands visiting over the course of the day, including current dogs in Rescue, foster dogs and recently adopted dogs. Two of our most popular ambassadors were Terry Ott and Jimmy. They stood outside all day and talked to probably hundreds of people about Rescue. I don t know what Terry says but he was never alone the entire day! A regular feature of the Tree Pull is our own little food court. The incomparable Amy Birk and Duane Huge manned it like pros, ably assisted by Steve and Jean Kerby. We received treats from many people, some of whom are not even club members, just willing supporters. Everything was homemade and quite delicious! Many members also brought hot dishes for the workers. It is really great to have something warm and toasty when coming in for a quick break from working the field. We had wonderful dogs pulling in the trees and all demonstrated the great qualities of the Newfoundland breed! We were especially pleased to see four first time pullers, two of which came through our Rescue program Diesel (with owner Mark Sparks) and Ellie (with owner Andy Simonson). Kerry with Leslie Conwell and Moxie with Stacy Jordan also showed how well they could pull for the first time. Newf Tales, Q Page 5 South Central Newfoundland Club, Inc., December 10, 2011
6 (Coincidently, all four of these Newbie Newfoundlands are Landseers.) As always, we were fortunate to have experienced repeat pullers as well. Dogs and handlers worked very hard in less than ideal conditions to help Rescue and we greatly appreciate their dedication. Our veteran pullers were: Joey with Mike Johnson Jethro and Amara with Rick and Diane Marino Splash with Robin Katen Skipper with Jane and Mariah Huge Moses with Karen and Jim Railing (Moses netted the single largest tip; $50 for his first pull of the day) A Doberman and Malamute team with Kyler Laird Juice and Louie with Kelly Davis kids and Newfies. The Dull family offers us a lot of support and we could not do it without them. This event is the culmination of years of work and many people. It is impossible to thank every single person as it is truly a team effort. Thank you for being a part of such a wonderful day! Remember it is always the first Sunday in December mark mark your 2012 calendar now! Several talented artists contributed to SCNRescue through donations of their wonderful pieces of work. This year was the first time we offered a unique hand painted, numbered Christmas ornament, and it was very well received. Jesse Vandenberg, a local artist, generously spent many hours painting our Newfie pulling a Christmas tree and we hope to make this an annual offering. Last and perhaps the biggest surprise was received after we all returned home from the Tree Pull. Member Nancy Gasser, who is an artist in St. Augustine, Florida, donated $1,000 to SCNRescue from the sales of The Mad Hatter prints in memory of Jet. We are so thankful for our relationship with Tom and Kerry Dull, who let us join their amazing family each year for this special Newfoundland Rescue day. Becoming a part of a family s Christmas tradition is a thrilling experience, made all the better with Louie and Juice (who belong to Kelly & Virginia Davis) and Splash on right (who belongs to Robin Katen) enjoy playing with some children at the Tree Pull.
