Surveying the Roaming Dog Population! Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference, 2011! Dr. Melania Gamboa! Veterinary Programmes Manager! Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean! 1
Dogs in:! Public areas! Not under direct human control! Seen during the moment of the dog count! Roaming dogs?! The roaming dog population varies with the dynamics of total dog population! Irresponsible onwership Why should we count dogs?! Evaluate the need for an intervention! To plan an intervention! To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.! 2
Example: # of dogs counted yearly in Jaipur, India! total males females pups Feb-97 Feb-98 Feb-99 Feb-00 Feb-01 Feb-02 Feb-03 Feb-04 Feb-05 Feb-06 An Indicador or an estimate?! 1. Indicator (index of abundance) Quick and simple Reflects changes in the total population by means of comparative counts 2. Estimate More time consuming to prepare and carry out Allows the use of statistics It uses a sample of the total population Uses the sample to estimate the total roaming dog population What do you look for when you are out counting dogs?! By direct observation you count every dog you see! Other useful information to note:! Age! Sex! Reproductive state! Body condition score! Skin problems! Collar! Etc! 3
How do you register your observations?! Indicator count! A dog count protocol should be written.! Selected routes must be documented exactly! Be consistent with your errors!! Repeat indicator dog counts on 3 consecutive days to estimate day to day variation.! Reduce confounding factors:! Time, people, weather! Is there a best time to perform dog counts?! Begin:! 6 weeks after reproductive season?! Tourist season?! Definitely not hurricane season! Repeat dog counts:! The same time of the year, under same conditions!! Consistency 4
Estimate dog count! An estimate dog counte estimates the total dog population in a specific area by counting dogs in a sample of that area and extrapolating the results.! Exhaustive count! You can extrapolate the count using a formula.! Estimate count formula:! # of dogs counted in selected quadrants Fraction of quadrants sampled For an estimate count:! 1 st : Get a map of your city or town!! 2 nd : Divide city or town into subregions.! 5
Divide the city into quadrants! The manual tells you how to do this! Adjacent Start painting with 4 colors! quadrants with the same color should not touch The selection of quadrants should be random.! The # of quadrants selected for dog counts depends on resources available.! Example: choose a color and eliminate the others: RED! 6
27 red quadrants 1000 total dogs counted in the red quadrants Fraction of quadrants sampled is 27/108 = ¼ = 0.25 Total # of dogs in Cairo? Estimate count formula:! # of dogs counted in selected quadrants Fraction of quadrants sampled = 1000 = 4000 total dogs in 0,25 Cairo What about dogs that usually roam, but were on private property at time of count?! Essential if we want to estimate total population of roaming dogs.! Important to take them into account when planning an intervention.! Surveys to people can help us calculate this:! Do you allow your dog to roam! At what time?! 7
Monitoring once intervention has begun! Frequent indicator dog counts! Estimate dog count every certain # of years.! Marking dogs is a way to keep track of those that have been spayed/neutered.! Good luck carrying out your own dog counts! 8
Thank you for your attention! 9
