11 THE COURSING ABILITY TEST (CAT) The Coursing Ability Test (CAT) is a pass/fail event. Dogs run singularly. In order to pass, the dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within the maximum amount of time for the course length. The judge keeps the official time and decides the merits of the dog s performance. Dogs can run with or without a collar. Collars should be buckle without tags, and should not interfere with breathing or movement. For the safety of the dog and as a courtesy to others, your dog should have a reliable recall. Lure coursing is a physically demanding sport so please be sure your dog is in good condition for such activity. Dogs that are old, have breathing or heart problems, are overweight, or are out of condition may be at greater risk for injury and exhaustion. If you are not sure, make an appointment with a veterinarian to get an opinion. ELIGIBILITY Coursing Ability Tests are open to all dogs at least 12 months of age that are individually registered with the AKC, recorded in the Foundation Stock Service (FSS) program, individually registered with a foreign or domestic registry organization whose pedigrees are acceptable for AKC registration, dogs granted a Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) number, dogs with AKC Limited or Conditional Registration, or mixed breed dogs enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners (CP) program. Dogs with breed disqualifications and monorchid / cryptorchid dogs are eligible to participate. Females in season may not enter. A dog may enter only once per event. COURSE DISTANCE & QUALIFYING TIMES Safety of the dogs is of the utmost importance. Dogs will run one of the following course distances: 300 yard course for dogs that are shorter than 12 inches at the withers and/or brachycephalic ( flat-faced ). The course must be completed in less than 1-1/2 minutes. 600 yard course for all dogs that do not run the 300 yard course. The course must be completed in less than 2 minutes. If there is a question which course a dog should run, the judge will decide. RIBBON Each dog that passes the test will receive a ribbon that is orange in color. TITLES Dogs can earn three titles by passing the Coursing Ability Test the required number of times. These are suffix titles that will appear on a dog s pedigree with a higher level title superseding a lower level title. Coursing Ability (CA) Awarded to a dog that passes the Coursing Ability Test three times under at least two different judges. Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) - Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test a total of ten times. Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test a total of 25 times. Coursing Ability Excellent 2 (CAX2) Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test a total of 50 times. A higher numbered title will be awarded for every additional twenty five passes. NOTES ON CHI Club ENTRIES 1. The CAT offered by CHI Club are limited to 20 entries/day. Each dog may only enter once per day. 2. Dogs will be placed on the run order list by the order in which entries are received by the Event Secretary. 3. Pre-entries must be received by the Event Secretary s by Tuesday Oct 2 nd 5pm. Pre-entering will place your dog(s) on the run order list ahead of gate entries. 4. Gate entries will be accepted if the 20 entry limit is not reached with pre-entries. 5. Incomplete, unsigned, conditional or unpaid entries will not be accepted. 6. The Club and/or Trial Secretary assume no responsibility for wrong or incomplete information given on the entry form. 7. The Club and/or the Trial Secretary assume no responsibility for a dogs failure to recall or injury. 8. Daily Schedule please see schedule in premium. CAT ROLL CALL & INSPECTION Each entry will be inspected for lameness, fitness to compete, and females in season. If in the opinion of the inspection committee a dog does not pass inspection, that dog shall not be allowed to enter and its entry fee shall be refunded. Bitches in season must be removed from trial site. TIPS FOR HANDLERS 1. Lancaster Event Center is not a securely fenced. It is strongly recommended that prior to running your dog, you have good recall control over your dog, as the dogs will run off leash. 2. Handlers should wear comfortable, sturdy shoes (no sandals or flip flops, please!) and be physically able to hold and release their dogs, as well as catch them. 3. This is an outdoor event. Please have all the items for protection from sun and weather for you and your dog, for all possible weather conditions we may experience at that time of year. 4. There is a $10 fine for dogs loose on the field but not in that course. Please have suitable containment for your dog. It is advised to keep dogs and children away from the course to reduce risk of any incident. 5. Handlers may carry toys or whistle, etc but not food on their persons to assist with retrieving their dog at the completion of their run. 6. Dogs will be brought to the start line on leash and released only upon a verbal signal ( Tally-Ho! ) from the Hunt Master. Dogs may be released by hand, folded leash, or using a traditional lure coursing slip lead. 7. The Hunt Master will instruct the handler to Retrieve your dog upon completion of the run. The handler is expected to promptly secure the dog and leave the field with the dog on leash. 8. Handlers are advised to warm up their dogs prior to their run and walk them for about 10 minutes afterwards. 9. Dogs may wear a collar except for a choke collar, a collar with prongs or an electronic training collar. The collar should be fit properly to minimize the chances of getting hung up on something during the run. Tags hanging from a collar could become entangled on something during a run. Owners may use clips or rubber bands to hold the dog s hair. The owner assumes the responsibility for the safety of the dog with regard to the dog s collar and paraphernalia on the dog.
