1 York Campus Primary School February Newsletter Mrs T s message This week we have two exciting events, when we welcome author Andrew Cope to school, followed by World Book Day on Thursday. Interim reports will also be sent home this week; please do check bags for these they will be enveloped and addressed for your attention. A response slip is also included with the report. Friday 31st March: Head Girl/Boy, Deputy Head Girl/Boy leading morning outdoor event. Friday 7th April: Term ends. Tba this term: Warriors House event. STOP PRESS! SPY DOG AUTHOR TO VISIT YORK CAMPUS We are all very excited that Andrew Cope, author of the Spy Dog/Cat/ Pups series of books is to visit York Campus on Wednesday. During the day, the children will participate in a writing workshop and get the chance to talk to Andrew and ask questions about his work as an author. Andrew will sign copies of his books, which can be bought on the day for 5 don t forget to bring this along if you would like Andrew to sign a book. We can t wait! What are Year 4 looking for? 2 RSPB Annual School Birdwatch Primary students at York Campus braved the cold and drizzle to participate in the annual RSPB Birdwatch event. This annual census enables the charity to monitor native bird numbers to see which species are thriving, and which are in decline. During their Birdwatch, Years 5 and 6 saw a Treecreeper, a mixed flock of Siskin and Greenfinch, along with Black-Headed and Herring Gulls as well as Blackbirds, Robin, Carrion Crow, Magpie and Chaffinch. Mr Taylor, a volunteer with the RSPB, was impressed by the observation skills of the children and their concentration during the Birdwatch. Thanks to RSPB Saltholme for loaning binoculars for the children to use. Building Pyramids by Year 3 have Radley has been busy learning bus stop division! Year 3 been learning all about the Ancient Egyptians and are looking forward to their visit to the Harrogate museum. Year 3 Pyramids were impressive, triangular constructions built by the Ancient Egyptians. When the pharaoh died, he paid a lot of money to be mummified and put into a pyramid. The first thing that happened, was the Ancient Egyptians put 4 stakes into the ground. Following that, they moved the loose sand. After that, they dug trenches and eventually, they filled the trenches with water so to make sure the pyramid would be level. They dragged the blocks on sledges, using waxed tracks, because they weighed two tonnes. When they went up to the higher levels, they used rollers on the tracks. The final part of building was to put on a gold, triangular block. They put limestone on the sides. Consequently, they were smooth. Lastly, they dug tombs inside the pyramid. In conclusion, pyramids were used to store mummified people. They have lasted a long time because they were strong, fine constructions. They were also massive! What s the oldest building you ve ever seen?

3 We all enjoyed European Culture Day on 2nd February. In the Primary School, Warriors House studied SPAIN; studied ; whilst Troopers House studied ITALY. Within their House, everyone participated in drama, art and created a factual powerpoint about their chosen country. At the end of the day, we gathered together to take a look at what we had all achieved. Year 5:the story of Mulan Once upon a time in a small village in the Han or Sui times there lived a young girl called Mulan. At that moment, Mulan s father (a retired general), was teaching Mulan to fight. No, no, young girl, hold the sword straight, he croaked. The next morning, Mulan and her father were doing some training when suddenly they heard some drums in the centre of the village. They started to walk hurriedly towards the sound. When they got there lots of villagers were already there, whispering to each other. Suddenly, everyone went quiet as a soldier stood on the platform. Every family must send a male into the war! he boomed. Everyone gasped, then as they took it all in, people started to walk home discussing what they had just heard. Roscoe All of a sudden, somebody knocked on their door. Mulan skipped happily to the door; when she opened it her eyes opened with surprise. The military man told her that one man from every family had to go to war. I ll have to go to war, mumbled her father. You can t cried Mulan, it s too dangerous! I ll have to go for the honour of our village, he mumbled again. Mulan turned her back to go to her room and think of a plan. That night, Mulan quietly got out of bed and tiptoed round her family to make sure they were sleeping. She took her father s armour and was careful not to wake up her family. Once she was outside she put the armour on and got on the horse that she had bought the day before. Yawning loudly, Mulan s father slowly got out of bed and went to get washed and brush his teeth. He slowly set off, stumbling along the dusty road. When he reached the town centre, the military told him somebody had already been and signed up. But my son s too young and Mulan is a girl! he exclaimed. You don t need to come, somebody has already signed up! the military said firmly. Taylor Stretching painfully, Mulan s father got out of bed and walked to the town centre. The first thing he did was to try to sign in. You can t come your son is already here, said the soldier. B-but my son is too young, said Mulan s father in a croaky voice. Mulan s bewildered father struggled home. When he got home, he realised that Mulan had gone because his armour had disappeared. During the war, Mulan fought very bravely. At the end of the war, the Emperor rewarded her with a job that would make her rich, but she declined it because she wanted a horse instead and an award for being brave. Radley

4 Year 4 have been learning about persuasive writing. They have learnt to use facts and emotive language to enhance their arguments. They imagined they were different animals and had to persuade someone that they were the most interesting creature to visit. They then gave their speech to the class. 6L have been creative read on to discover the Journey of a Red Blood Cell... To my surprise, I was swooshed into this thing called a heart. It was very strong; it punched me and shoved me out and chucked me into the lungs and it gave me a partner called oxygen. After that I went to the heart again and dropped off the oxygen. Suddenly, there was an emergency I rushed to the problem, but it was already sorted out. I tried to get out but I hit a soldier; he fell out of the way and I zoomed out and splat! I was on the hard, gravel floor and that was the end of me. Rona I have In Year 4 s assembly, we travelled around the world with Lancelot, Emma, Ivan and Conrad. We were introduced to animals such as camels, skunks and polar bears. We learnt about what these creatures look like and how they survive in their environments. Year 4 Camel- I urge you to come and see my incredible hump full of fat so I can go days without food or water. Troy Beaver- I eat bark because it is the best food in the world. Why don t you try out eating bark? Emil Monarch butterfly - I beg you to come and seem me as I can describe how I fly to Mexico and all the incredible things I see. Hayley Howler monkey- I urge you to come and I will even give you a climbing lesson. You will be as good as the rest of us in no time. Myles Polar bear-i have 42 sparkling, sharp teeth, each one is completely unique. They are the best teeth in the world. How could you deny me? Guy Prairie dog- We can show you our amazing tunnels and how could you not choose such an impressive animal to visit? Zola 6L just cracked out of my slimy, damp and cold bone marrow. I suddenly open up into a new, inspiring world. I sailed down the body into the heart, thousands of other blood cells are around me - even white blood cells! I am finally out of this place and into a place called the lungs, bigger than the heart by far. I floated around for ages; finally after a while I left and went back to the heart. Then I went to somewhere called the brain; lots of very clever blood cells were up here all screaming clever things! Chuck I m only one day old, inside this damp and dark bone marrow. I am going to try to get out then I will go on a massive adventure. I will go to the lungs, the heart, small intestine, large intestine and the bone marrow, which I am in already. Zachary Deep inside a hollow, dark and echoey bone marrow, I silently squeezed out. I found myself in a very busy body. I saw everything before my very eyes. There was a big, very big muscle near the left hand side and it kept beating loudly. The other red blood cells trembled before it. The white blood cells told the red blood cells (who were lined up), which way to go. But still the muscle kept on bumping and bumping. I didn t know when it would stop. Indio

5 Year 5 did an assembly on China and the Shang dynasty, we included the story of Mulan as well as many interesting facts about the physical and human geography of the People s Republic of China. We explained what happens at Chinese New Year as our assembly coincided with this celebration this year is the Year of the Rooster, we were born in the year of the Pig and Dog. We have included some extracts from our stories in this edition of the newsletter. 6T: Book Art 6T have completed their first SDL book art of the academic year a study of their choice related to Anglo Saxons or Vikings. Look out for the Y6 Volcano books, currently in production!
