1 What's the Buzz at Reformation? Sept. 3, 2017 Sept. 4 Mon. Labor Day Sept. 9 Sat. Men's Group Sept. 18 Mon. Ronald McDonald House Bullying, Defined Bullying is an ugly, harmful thing. It is aggressive, involves an imbalance of power, and is either repetitive or has the potential to happen again. Bullying is not always from peers, it can come from an older person in a higher "respected" position. As has been reported in the news, bullying can kill. As we aim to be "upstanding" citizens, we "Stand Up" to bullying when we see others being victimized. If you can't stop it by yourself, you can report it. Bullying is described as an outcome as much as a problem - when bullies have low self-esteem, they often put down others in an attempt to make themselves look more powerful, popular, etc. Here are three main kinds of bullying, and they are often combined. For instance, cyber bullying is both verbal and social, and can cause just as much harm as physical bullying. (1) Verbal bullying includes name-calling, threats, teasing, taunting, and writing on someone's locker, house, or belongings. (2) Physical bullying could be making rude gestures or mean faces, inappropriate touching, pinching, poking, spitting, kicking, tripping, pushing, scratching, ripping or pulling at a person's clothes, person, or hair, hitting, withholding bathroom privilege. Wrecking or breaking another person's property, knocking food or books out of someone's hands, requiring someone's lunch money in return for no physical harm. (3) Social bullying might be withholding popularity, blackmailing someone with either embarrassing or incriminating information or pictures, embarrassing somebody in public, forcing someone do homework for others, or spreading rumors. 5 What's the Buzz at Reformation? Sept. 17, 2017 Everything Lives in God, by Hildegard von Bingen Your eyes are not strong enough to look at God. Your mind is not strong enough to comprehend his mysteries. You can only see and know what God allows. Yet in your desire to see and know more, you engage in all manner of foolish speculations, which cause your soul to stagger. Just as water is absorbed by the heat of a burning forge, so your soul is absorbed by the restlessness of your thoughts, as you try to grasp what is beyond your grasp. The Word of God regulates the movements of the sun, the moon and the stars. The Word of God gives the light which shines from the heavenly bodies. He makes the wind blow, the rivers run and the rain fall. He makes tress burst into blossom, and the crops bring forth the harvest. The sky above us imitates God. Just as the sky has no beginning and no end, so God has no beginning and end. Just as the stars sparkle, so spiritual stars emanate from the throne of God, to sparkle within peoples' souls. The Word of God spoke, and brought all creatures into being. God and his Word are one. As the Word spoke, so God's eternal will was fulfilled. The echo of the Word awakened life from inanimate dust. When the Word of God spoke at the moment of creation, his sound was implanted in every creature, and gave life to every creature. The love of God is symbolized by a leaping fountain. All who come near to it are showered by its sparkling waters. And they can see their own image in the pool below. Everything lives in God, and hence nothing can truly die, since God is life itself. God is the wisdom that brought all things into being. He breathes life into all things. In all creation--in trees, plants, animals and stones--there are hidden secret powers which no one can discern unless they are revealed by God.

6 Sept. 17, 2017 (p. 2) Hildegard von Bingen, abbess, public speaker, composer ( ) While still a young girl, Hildegard had visions of God's light. She believed that the Word of God is present in every living thing. Remarkably powerful for a woman of her time, she put forward the idea that men and women are spiritually equal, founded an independent Benedictine convent, and was a popular speaker. Her vivid imagery and beautiful music, for which she wrote both words and music, predates Bach by over 500 years. You can hear it sung on Youtube. Quote from Hildegard von Bingen O Holy Wisdom, Soaring power, encompass us with wings unfurled, and carry us encircling all, above, below, and through the world. Sources: Fisher, Mary Pat, and Lee W. Bailey, An Anthology of Living Religions(Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, 2000). Snell, Melissa "Hildegard of Bingen Quotes" < historymedren.about.com> Pets de Soeurs (Nun's cookies) This is probably a Canadian invention, the French version is fried. 1 lb. of your favorite pastry dough, at room temperature 1/2 cup light brown sugar (some Canadians use maple syrup instead) 1 tsp. cinnamon, or zest of half an orange 3 Tbs. butter, softened Preheat oven to 375 and grease or spray a cookie sheet. Roll dough out to less than 1/2" thick rectangle. Spread with 2 Tbs. butter & brown sugar, leaving about a 1" margin all around. Sprinkle cinnamon or orange zest over. Roll up tight and trim ends. Seal the seam with remaining 1 Tbs. butter. Cut into 1/2" rounds, lay them on the cookie sheet. Bake about 12 minutes, until brown sugar is caramelized. While cookies are baking, lay out a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper on the counter. Remove cookies from oven, let sit 5 minutes, then transfer to wax paper or parchment. They will keep frozen for a month.
