Welcome to our first Newsletter of 2016! Word from the Editor I can t believe Easter has come and gone very early this year and we are now well into Spring with hopefully a good Summer speeding towards us. Spring time means that your annual membership is now due for renewal. Membership is still only 10 per year. Please complete the form at the back of the Newsletter. Our Membership Secretary would like me to remind you that we need your subscription payments by the end of April. We have so much important work to do and so many cats to help that we need every penny as soon as possible. Membership renewals are due in April each year, but please ignore this request if you have already paid after receiving the 2015 Christmas Newsletter. Spring means new life, lambs gambolling in the fields and usually the start of kitten season. You will see from our Welfare Team s update on the next page that they are waiting nervously for the kitten calls to come in although some cat mothers have surprised us with early deliveries. Spring time also means spring cleaning. If you are having a clear out, could you please consider donating items such unwanted bric-a-brac and jewellery which will then raise some money for us at our sales. You can contact the relevant people as shown at the end of this Newsletter or bring the donated items to one of our sales. We are also in need of good quality bits and pieces to sell on ebay. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all the members who have already sold on ebay on behalf of Bromley Cats Protection. If you fancy having a go selling on ebay, but are unsure how to go about it, please send me a message on BromleyCPL@outlook.com. I will contact you and talk you through the process. It s really easy and it such a good feeling to make/donate money on items which you either give or throw away. Our next indoor sale starts at 2pm at Holy Trinity Church, Lennard Road, Penge on Saturday 23rd April. Buses 75 and 194 stop just a short walk away and Penge East railway is only a stones throw. There is also plenty of free parking. This venue was a runway success last year! Please come along and enjoy the fun, pick up a bargain and enjoy some homemade refreshments. They are all simply adorable and need a loving home. Could it be you?

Update from the Welfare Desk As Christmas drew close the helpline went seasonally quiet, until on Christmas Eve when we received a call about a limping stray tom. At the vets no injury was found except a small cat bite, but they did discover that the poor cat had entropion. This is a condition where the eyelashes turn inwards and scratch the eyeball causing discomfort and damage to the eye. Fortunately the operation on both his eyes has been a success and Felix is now awaiting a forever home (see cats for homing page). The highlight of 2015 was the homing of an elderly cat who had arrived at our vets in a builders bucket, looking almost dead. The poor cat was in a terrible state with live maggots in her wounds, and she had walking difficulties due to old injuries. She was a lovely cat who had obviously been on the street for some considerable time, but was still so affectionate and was desperate for a lap to sit on, and we were all so delighted that she quickly found a loving new home. Our own home saw a large increase in cat numbers passing through our doors, the price of being the welfare officers, but we were pleased to end the year with just a couple of cats and a mum and her two kittens (who have since been homed) in our house. The year end also brought two new fosterers Lynn and Allison and another three have joined since the start of the year, Kim, Tina and Bev. So we hope that we will now be able to help even more cats in The year has begun much like 2015, with a pleasant increase in the number of people looking to adopt in January and February and a quieter period on the helpline due to less people being evicted, moving home or reporting strays. As the weather warmed up and we headed into Easter this pattern sadly reversed itself, and the calls are now becoming more frequent and enquiries to home a cat have gone very quiet. At the start of February we received a call about a stray who had been living in a mobility scooter for many months. All attempts to find the owner had drawn a blank, and the finder was concerned that the cat might be pregnant. We arrived at the house to find a cat that looked like it had swallowed a football, and 5 kittens were born the following day. All are doing well under the care of fosterer Karine, and already have homes eagerly awaiting them. To our amazement, we have had no further calls about pregnant cats, and we are nervous that it might be the quiet before the storm. Despite seeming quiet, compared to the summer madness, the branch has already taken in 21 cats since 1 st January and homed the same number. We have also reunited 3 cats with their owners, including one owner who was now living in Scotland and had lost her cat 3 years ago! As the cat was now quite elderly it was wonderful to be able to reunite him with his family, thanks to the owner s foresight in having him micro-chipped. Sadly most of the strays we rescue are unneutered and unwanted/abandoned and it is nice when we meet an owner who rushes all the way from Scotland to collect her much loved pet. Laurence, Janet & Laura

Jams, marmalades, pickles and chutneys Sometimes there's nothing tastier than a slice of toast with homemade strawberry jam packed with fresh fruit, but store-bought versions are often full of preservatives and artificial flavourings. Why not come along to one of our indoor sales and treat yourself to some conserves made by Suzan and Sandra. Suzan has been making soft set jam for many years and has perfected a jam that tastes like you wouldn't believe. It s absolutely delicious simply spread on fresh buttered toast, dolloped onto a portion of rice pudding, used as a filling for a homemade Victoria sponge or, as an extra special treat, enjoyed with scones and clotted cream. All the jams and marmalades are beautifully presented with pretty covers and would make a lovely gift. Produce is seasonal and is sometimes organic picked from friends gardens. Many of Suzan s recipes are ones that were passed down to her from her grandmother, but she will also try new ideas and ingredients suggested by Delia or Nigella. Her most popular relish is sweet piccalilli. Sandra makes bramble jelly from local blackberries she has picked herself and guarantees it will have an intense blackberry taste with the added bonus of no pips. She also made her first ever batch of organic Seville orange marmalade earlier this year and it sold out very quickly. As this is seasonal, sadly you will have to wait until next February for some more! Suzan also makes relishes, chutneys and pickles. All her products are set traditionally the natural way, simply using sugar & vinegars, so no artificial ingredients, just top quality produce simply spiced, sourced locally whenever possible. Orchard Cottage was a 2015 favourite which was rich with plums, dried fruits and onions. Wonderful with cheese or cold meats. Tasters are available at our indoor sales, so you can choose which is your favourite before you buy a jar to take home. If you try, I guarantee you will buy!!! Bon Appétit

Review of 2015 From Our Treasurer 2015 was a very busy year for our branch as the new welfare team settled into their roles and volunteers worked hard to raise money so that we could continue our vital work. Our branch has to raise all of its own funds which are then used exclusively to help cats and kittens in our local area. Our total income for 2015 was some 1,600 more than 2014 which given the economic climate is a great result. The figure was boosted by sponsorship money raised by Sarah, the head nurse at our vets, and large sales of calendars and cards thanks to Brender and Isabel. A big thank you to all our volunteers who man our stalls at our sales. We held 8 indoor events and thanks to Tracy, 8 outdoor summer events, where we had a table or two at local fetes and fairs. In total these events generated net income (after hall/table hire costs) of nearly 8,300, up 1,100 over This is mainly due to our sale at the new venue at Holy Trinity Church in Penge, and we will be holding two sales there in During 2015 I banked adoption fees from cats and kittens homed of 4,110 compared to 2,960 in The increase reflects the hard work undertaken by our welfare and homing teams, and our new website and social media platforms maintained by Laura, which has resulted in raising our profile and more offers of homes coming forward. Of course, our priority is to find good forever homes for the cats and kittens in our care, but it is the case that the adoption fees nowhere near cover the actual costs we have incurred in caring for the cats such as MOT and any treatment at our vets, neutering where necessary, microchipping, blood testing for Felv/FIV, vaccinating and feeding. These costs can total over 180 even for a cat staying in our care for just one month and not needing any further veterinary care! We would ask prospective owners to be as generous as they can when adopting one of our cats, bearing in mind the costs and treatments/tests we have undertaken on their behalf. A few of our supporters have kindly set up regular standing orders to us so we know we will have a certain amount of funds each month. This is very helpful and if you would like to do this, even 5 per month for example, please contact me on and I will let you have our bank details. Gift Aid receipts from Government are an important source of income to us for every 1 donated by supporters, the Government will give us an additional 25p. I know many supporters have already signed up with us so that we can claim Gift Aid on their donations (there is a box to tick on the membership/donation form in this Newsletter). If anyone eligible for Gift Aid on their donations has not yet let us know please indicate whether we can with any future donations you make to us, quoting your full name and address. To qualify for Gift Aid, what you pay in income tax and/or capital gains tax for each tax year (6 April to following 5 April) must equal at least the amount of tax that all charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs that you donate to will reclaim on your gifts for that tax year. Other taxes you pay such as VAT and Council Tax do not count. We receive excellent treatment and support from our vets. Our vet s bills run at an annual level of at least 20,000 due to the number of cats we help and the sometimes extensive treatments needed to bring them back to health many cats coming into our care have been dumped, ill- treated, are heavily pregnant or simply lost their way in life. We help where we can. Overhead costs necessary to keep the branch functioning include telephones, advertising, postage, cat transport etc are kept under tight control by the Committee and totalled just over 1,900 in None of our Committee or other volunteers receives any remuneration. A big thank you to everybody who supported us during 2015, without whom we couldn t help needy cats and kittens in our area. We now look forward to the rest of 2016 and for your continued support - and hope that we can help even more furry friends this year! Sandra, Treasurer, Bromley Branch

We need a loving home Below are some of the cats that are in our care and waiting for homes. We may also have other cats or kittens that are not yet shown here or may not quite be ready for homing, so even if you don t see a suitable cat on this page, please get in touch. If you are interested in adopting a cat from us, please call us on or complete the enquiry form on our Contact Us area of our website. Pingu is a friendly and playful young cat. His fosterer says "Pingu is a real character, he's friendly, bold, and inquisitive. He's a playful cat with bundles of energy, and loves playing with a ball. He's also funny in his cute habit of lying on his back with all paws in the air! Pingu loves human company and enjoys strokes and attention, and he will snuggle down on your bed with you at night. Being a cheeky boy he does give a gentle nip if stroked too much, so is best suited to a home without very young children." Tia is a lovely friendly girl. Her fosterer says "Tia is a really loveable cat. She loves a lot of attention and company, is a lap cat, and settled into foster care very quickly. Tia is also quite playful." Bella is a beautiful and sweet young cat. Her fosterer says "Bella is affectionate, she really likes a fuss and to know we are there- she follows us everywhere! She's also quite playful! Bella can be a bit nervous around new people but she soon comes round to them." Maisie is a lovely beautiful young tabby cat. Her fosterer says "Maisie is a friendly girl who enjoys strokes, she's playful and likes attention. She was a stray for a while and is not used to being picked up, so is best suited to a home without very young children." Felix is an affectionate black and white cat. His fosterer says "Felix is a sweetheart, he likes to give you licks and he will sit on your lap for hours. Felix can be a bit nervous at first and so is best suited to a home without young children."

Tracy s Story Tracy is one of our Committee members who organises all of our events. She is the familiar face of bric-a-brac at our indoor events and occasionally gives talks to schoolchildren about cat welfare. Tracy is also a vegan and has 4 rescue cats of her own. I started volunteering for Bromley CP in about I was working as a teacher and was always getting presents from the children that were quite nice but I didn't want to fill my house with them! I contacted Jannette when I found her number in a newsletter from a CP information/food collection table at a supermarket. Jannette was happy to get the pressies and said to come along to the sales and help out if I wanted. At first I was a bit reluctant as I didn't want to be a fifth wheel but then I did and eventually I was asked would it be possible for me to store some of the bric-a-brac and a garage full later a bric-a-brac queen was born! Later Jannette said she was giving up being fundraising co-ordinator and did I want to do it and join the committee. I really enjoy selling bric-a-brac as often what people have given away is a treasure someone else has been searching for! The outdoor sales are a lot of fun, even if the weather is not always with us but I wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of help from my regular and wonderful team, Michelle, David, Lin, John, Stacey and Karen and other people who come to support us. When I heard that the Coney Hall Rainbows had requested a CP talk I thought that as a former teacher I'd be able to do it. I went along to watch one talk and then gave the next one! It was fun to be with children who took such a great interest in cats. I think it's really important to educate people about caring for animals. There's another talk planned for April. At home I have 4 cats of my own, my 2 old lady sisters Biddy and Mouse both 11 years old in May, my ginger boy Bertie who is 5 in March and who was rescued as a kitten from a rather chaotic home where the young child he belonged to took the view that as he was her cat she could do anything with him! This included throwing him over the bannisters! Luckily her mum decided he needed a new home and he came to live with me. Last but not least there is Elby, my little black boy who is about 3 years old. I first spotted him in my garden when he was a small kitten of maybe 12 weeks old. I thought he was young to be let out. He was soon there night and morning waiting to eat food I left out for my cats and very soon I'm afraid to say, food I left out for him A friend of mine said I should take him in but I was reluctant to upset the resident cats even with a cat that they knew and tolerated in the garden. But when I noticed he had a sore on his neck I stuck a collar on him with my phone number and took him to my vet. He was diagnosed with ear mites that had led him to scratch his neck. There was no response from his collar so he came to live with me. There was some widdling on carrier bags at first but he soon got the hang of the litter tray! I've got an extra soft spot for him as he chose me and he often wakes up and cries as if he's had a bad dream of the old days when he didn't have a home. 9 Feline Pancreatitis It wasn t until my cat Charlie became unwell late last year, that I realised feline pancreatitis is a common problem. Charlie had a very sudden acute attack, which made him extremely unwell and having to be cared for at the vets for 3 weeks. He has recovered well, but maybe if I had spotted the signs sooner, it would not have been so severe. Our Treasurer s cat, Pumpkin Pie, suffers from the chronic form of the disease. Although not as life threatening, it is a serious and worrying condition and one that has to be managed. The pancreas is a V-shaped organ nestled snugly behind the stomach and next to the first section of the small intestine. The pancreas produces insulin, which helps metabolize sugar and convert it into energy, and enzymes, which aid in the digestion and absorption of fats. Pancreatitis is, in short, an inflammation of the pancreas. When the pancreas gets inflamed, it starts leaking digestive enzymes. Unfortunately, digestive enzymes work on your cat s guts as well as they work on your cat s food, and the digestion of your cat s internal organs can cause increasing inflammation and pain. One thing that makes pancreatitis so hard to diagnose is that it manifests in vague symptoms: lethargy, weight loss, dehydration, low body temperature, and loss of appetite. In the case of Pumpkin Pie, his faeces became loose and yellowy in colour. As the pancreatitis gets more severe, a cat may develop vomiting and abdominal pain, increased heart rate, and difficulty breathing. Pancreatitis becomes life-threatening when the enzymes produced by the pancreas begin digesting the pancreas itself. Because e pancreatitis mimics so many other conditions, your vet will l need to rule out other symptoms by performing a standard d complete blood count and blood chemistry, and a urinalysis. is. The vet may also want to run another blood test called the fpli (feline pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity), which specifically checks for pancreatitis, and ultrasound or CT scans of the abdomen. Pancreatitis is a difficult condition to treat, and the aim of therapy is usually management of the condition rather than cure. The mainstays of treatment are intravenous fluid therapy (a drip), diet, pain control and supportive care including antisickness medication. Long term chronic pancreatitis should be monitored and a strict low fat diet must be maintained. A number of factors are thought to contribute to the disease, but most there is no way to identify the cause. The prognosis depends a lot on how severe the disease was when the cat received treatment. If it was mild, the odds of a complete recovery without further complications are good. However, if a cat also has diabetes, liver disease and/or small intestine disease, the odds of a full recovery are not as good. If the pancreatitis was moderate or severe when it was detected, a cat may have recurrences. Some cats even develop chronic pancreatitis, which can lead to diabetes or pancreatic insufficiency. The best you can to keep your cat healthy. Feed him the best diet you can afford and take him in for regular checkups so that problems such as diabetes or bowel disease, which might contribute to pancreatitis, are caught early. Also, the vet treating Pumpkin Pie said that you should try and encourage your cat to drink as much as possible as this will help to flush out any toxins from the pancreas. Pumpkin Pie mainly eats special food which is lower in fat and recommended for cats with sensitive stomachs. If you kitty is lethargic, not eating well, and generally just not doing right, take him to the vet for a check up. You know your cat better than anyone else. It could be something and nothing, but it could be pancreatitis.

Cat in the Rain Before After Thank you to Ray, who travels from afar to our indoor sales and dons a cat costume to rally passers-by to come and browse our stalls. The weather has not been on our side at recent events, but Ray is always good humoured, come rain or come shine. He s a real pussy cat! And Finally. Thank you to Carole T who sends me feline news articles from around the world. Here is my favourite. Did anyone read in the paper recently about Corduroy, the World s Oldest Cat,? At 26 years old, you can tell that there is something special about him. This remarkable feline was adopted from a shelter, back in 1989, when the owner was just six years old! Twenty years later, and Corduroy is still feisty Maine Coon cat who remains in remarkably good health, despite being 121 years old in cat years. Now that he is officially the world s oldest cat, recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records, Corduroy has become quite the celebrity. He has an Instagram page with thousands of followers. Aside from a special diet to maintain kidney health, Couduroy s owner says s she attributes his amazing longevity to living an active life. For anyone who is hesitant to adopt an older animal because they don t think they will get to live a long life together, this story serves as a great reminder that with love and attention, senior pets can be awesome too!
