2 University of Bielefeld Andrea Lange ( ) British and American Studies Meike Scholz ( ) Winter Semester 05/06 Lexis class Tuesday (10-12) Dr. Pätzold Times of Day: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Time Expressions On the floor beside his bed a book lay open; he had been reading it before he fell asleep the previous night. (p. 21) Privet Drive looked exactly as a respectable suburban street would be expected to look in the early hours of Saturday morning. (p. 22) They knew where Harry s bedroom was, having once rescued him from it in the dead of night. (p. 44) Look at the time, Mrs. Weasley said suddenly, checking her wristwatch. You really should be in bed, the whole lot of you, you'll be up at the crack of dawn to get to the Cup. (p. 60) It was chilly and the moon was still out. Only a dull, greenish, tinge along the horizon to their right showed that daybreak was drawing closer. (p. 65) A sense of excitement rose like a palpable cloud over the campsite as the afternoon wore on. By dusk, the still summer air itself seemed to be quivering with anticipation, and as darkness spread like a curtain over the thousands of waiting wizards the last vestiges of pretence disappeared (p. 85) When the Weird Sisters finished playing at midnight, everyone gave them a last, loud round of applause, and started to wend their way into the Entrance Hall. (p. 375) The Calendar: Only last year Harry had fallen fifty feet from an airborne broomstick. (p. 22) Voldemort - the most powerful Dark wizard for a century, a wizard who had been gaining power steadily for eleven years- arrived at his house and killed his father and mother. (p. 23) At the end of the summer he would be starting his fourth year at Hogwarts (p. 24) Their general wish of keeping Harry as miserable as possible, coupled with their fear of his powers had let them to lock his school trunk in the cupboard under the stairs every summer prior to this. (p. 26) But there was still a fortnight to go before he went back to school. (p. 24)

3 The whole Ministry s been working on it for months. (p. 66) How long have you been here, Dobby? Harry asked, as Dobby handed around the tea. Only a week, Harry Potter, sir! said Dobby happily. (p. 329) Dobby has travelled the country for two whole years, sir, trying to find work! (p. 329) Come on, Hermione, I ve got til February the twenty-fourth, Harry said. (p. 342) There were still two and half months to go until he needed to know what all the screechy wailing meant, after all. (p. 342) Just because it s taken you three years to notice, Ron, doesn t mean no one else has spotted I m a girl! (p. 349) Other time expressions: Frank knew at once what was going on. (p. 11) Harry tried to recall what he had been dreaming about before he had awoken. (p. 20) The same arm had been pierced not long afterwards. (p. 22) Go straight to the Headmaster of Hogwarts, and in the meantime, consult a book. (p. 24) Harry knew that apparating was very difficult; it meant disappearing from one place and reappearing almost instantly in another. (p. 63) "The man of the moment! Ludo!" (p. 80) Until such time as p. 146 Harry glimpsed Fleur Delacour from time to time in the corridors; she looked exactly as she always did, haughty and unruffled. (p. 281/282) It s Christmas, Hermione, said Harry lazily; he was reading Flying with Cannons for the tenth time in an armchair near the fire. (p. 342) Padma was sitting with her arms and legs crossed, one foot jiggling in time to the music. (p. 366) I want to talk now, while you can t slip off, Severus. You ve been avoiding me. (p. 449) Even as Harry watched, the chains on the arms of the chair glowed suddenly gold, and snaked their way up his arms, binding him there. (p. 510)

4 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Spatial Expressions He lived alone in a run-down cottage in the Riddle House grounds. (p. 8) Frank limped around to the back of the house until he reached a door. (p. 11) He reached the Hall, which was a little lighter owing to the large mullioned windows either side of the front door. (p. 11) The fire was the only source of light in the room; it was casting long, spidery shadows upon the walls. (p. 18) Dudley had emerged from his last encounter with a fully-grown wizard with a curly pig s tail poking out of the seat of his trousers. (p. 40) Uncle Vernon snorted into his moustache. (p. 40) There have been two hundred Portkeys placed at strategic points around Britain, and the nearest one to us is up the top of Stoatshead Hill (p. 66) Hermione came over the crest of the hill last, clutching a stitch in her side. (p. 67) They walked through the wood for twenty minutes, until at last they emerged on the other side, and found themselves in the shadow of a gigantic stadium. (p. 87) At last they reached the top of the staircase and found themselves in a small box, set at the highest point of the stadium and situated exactly halfway between the golden goal posts. (p. 88) So far it was empty, except for a tiny creature sitting in the second from last seat at the end of the row behind them. (p. 88) The right-hand side of the stands, which was a solid block of scarlet, roared its approval. (p. 93) Come on, Hermione repeated, and she pulled Harry and Ron off up the path again. (p. 111) He then climbed out of the portrait hole, up through the silent castle. finally arriving at the Owlery, which was situated at the top of West Tower. (201) He could not stop himself looking anxiously around every morning when the post owls arrived, nor, late at night before he went to sleep, prevent himself seeing horrible visions of Sirius, cornered by Dementors down some dark London street (203) Once again, and most unusually, they were sitting apart from everyone else. (p. 209) Who s avoiding you? said Ron, sitting down next to them. (p. 209)

5 But her next few words were drowned by the sudden whooshing noise from overhead which announced the arrival of the post owls. (211) Miss Patil, take that ridiculous thing out of your hair. Parvati scowled and removed a large ornamental butterfly from the end of her plait. (212) Dumbledore caught the piece of parchment and held it at arm s length, so that he could read it by the light of the flames, which had turned back to blue white. (236/237) However, while everyone of Dobby s strange collection of garments was so clean and well cared for that it looked brand new, Winky was plainly not taking care of her clothes at all. There were soup stains all down her blouse and a burn in her skirt. (p ) He had put the golden egg upstairs in his trunk, and hadn t opened it since the celebration party after the first task. (p. 342) He, Ron and Hermione were sitting at the very back of the Charms class with a table to themselves. (p. 416) You is supposed to be down by the lake with the other champions, sir! (p. 425) Furious, Harry threw his ingredients and his bag into his cauldron, and dragged it up to the front of the dungeon to the empty table. (p. 447) Winky is over there by the fire, miss said Dobby quietly, his ears drooping slightly. (p. 466) Harry got so tired of Ron and Hermione sniping at each other over their homework in the common room that he took Sirius food up to the Owlery that evening on his own. (p. 468) An eagle owl flew through the coil of smoke rising from Hagrid s chimney; it soared towards the castle, around the Owlery and out of sight. (p. 469) Looking down, Harry saw Hagrid digging energetically in front of his cabin. (p. 469) For one moment, Harry saw the evil, flat face illuminated in the sparks dancing on the surface of the potion. And then Wormtail lowered the creature into the cauldron; there was a hiss, and it vanished below the surface; Harry heard its frail body hit the bottom with a soft thud. (p. 556) Just a little longer, Nagini, he whispered, and the snake glided away through the grass, to where the Death Eaters stood watching. (p. 571)
