2 PANDA YUR FIELD REPRT pecial report complied by Nicola Loweth, WWF-UK s regional officer for India and China QINLING MUNTAIN, HAANXI PRVINCE CEN TR A L CHINA I knew my trip to China would be enlightening and inspiring, but nothing could have prepared me for what lay ahead arlier this year, I was lucky enough to visit haanxi province, along with a number of national experts, to help WWF colleagues in China develop their 10-year strategy for giant pandas. While I was there, I met some of the field teams who monitor and protect your adopted pandas amazing efforts that you help to support. And a last-minute field trip turned out to be the experience of a lifetime. FEELING HPEFUL It was 8am, and I was in a cold and misty Changqing National Nature Reserve, about to go on a giantpanda-seeking mission with the park rangers. I 2 YEAR Female pandas can give birth every two years knew the chances of seeing a wild panda were extremely slim, but there d been reports of a male and female in the valley we were heading to. Could this be my lucky day? BEARING UP Panda monitoring is exhausting! We trekked for hours to reach the valley, and found lots of giant panda signs, including scratches on tree trunks, fresh droppings, scent markings and broken bamboo. Yet as time ticked by, I started losing hope of seeing an actual bear. uddenly a ranger got a message on his walkie-talkie. He turned to me and whispered panda. This was it! ALL IMAGE WWF, EXCEPT INET ABVE, CENTRE WWF-CHINA ACTIN TATIN! We rushed off to find the panda and, in my haste to keep up with the rangers, I slid and stumbled on the wet, slippery undergrowth. Finally we stopped on a stony ridge and I heard a bark, then a chirp. Then, peering ahead into the mist, I saw my very first wild giant panda a beautiful female resting in a tree! I gazed in awe at the stunning black-and-white bear, unable to believe my eyes. This was a dream come true. But hang on, something else was happening. URPRIE, URPRIE Leaves rustled nearby and a male panda emerged from the forest, less than five metres away from me. As I looked into his dark, solemn eyes I didn t dare move. Pandas have poor vision but a good sense of smell, and he quickly picked up my scent and turned tail. Then, something even more astonishing happened. RIVAL BATTLE The valley came alive with the sound of barks, grunts, growls, chirps and bleats, and we realised there were at least five giant pandas! uddenly, two males came crashing through the bamboo and charged towards the base of the tree where the female was resting. They fought furiously but eventually the noise died down, and the female calmly slid down the tree. We couldn t see much at that point, but she mated with one of the males before heading back into the forest. PANDA PERFECTIN Back in the UK, I m still astounded at my amazing giant panda encounter. During the mating season it s not unusual for several males to pursue the same female, but it s incredibly rare for anyone to witness it. It s a field trip I ll never forget. The valley came alive with the sound of barks, grunts, growls, chirps and bleats, and we realised there were at least five giant pandas! Main: Nicola in the bamboo forest Insets: ne of the pandas seen in Changqing National Nature Reserve PANDA- MNIUM! Nicola recorded some of the rare and incredible sounds made by the pandas. 3 VALUING NATURE...R PAYING THE PRICE giant pandas share the natural habitats that are vital to our way of life. o thank you for helping to protect these amazing animals through your adoption ur forests, rivers, oceans and soils provide us with the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we irrigate our crops with, and numerous other things we depend on for our health, happiness and prosperity. The total value of these natural assets is priceless, but not unlimited. But this is hardly ever taken into account in the decisions governments and businesses make about developments, such as new housing. That needs to change, urgently. Your adoption can help us to lobby with the government and safegaurd pandas and their habitats. Thank you so much for your support! MICHEL GUNTHER / WWF
4 Y NATUREPL.CM / ANDY RUE / WWF PANDA NEW MAKING THE GRADE We re delighted that two giant panda reserves in Gansu province have gained national status his fantastic upgrade means that Yuhe and Duo er National Nature Reserves will receive extra funding to strengthen their management, and that s great news for giant pandas and other species. But it s crucially important that different reserve authorities work together to monitor and study the bears using the same techniques and sharing information. UNITED EFFRT In January, we began helping Gansu Forestry Department introduce a more unified monitoring system across Duo er and three neighbouring reserves: Axia, Chagangliang and Boyuhe, supported by funds from panda adoptions. We provided training in collecting and analysing data, as well as camera traps and other crucial monitoring equipment. The reserves are now collaborating and we re really impressed with everyone s amazing efforts. This is a big step forward for panda protection in Gansu, and you helped make it happen. Thank you. Axia Duo er Gansu province Chagangliang Boyuhe Panda habitat in the Qinling mountains haanxi province PANDA PRVINCE There are seven nature reserves in Gansu, covering four different panda sub-populations. Axia, Chagangliang, Boyuhe and Duo er protect the outh Gansu sub-population of pandas, consisting of 19 individuals. DID YU KNW? According to China s fourth national panda survey, there are 132 giant pandas living in Gansu. That s an impressive 12.8% increase since the previous survey in 2004, and we re hoping better monitoring will further boost panda conservation here YUR HERE 6 YUR PANDA ADPTIN UPDATE 7 NATUREPL.CM / ERIC BACCEGA / WWF In your last update, we asked you to name your conservation hero and lots of you responded.
