8 A little bit about how things work If you are new to showing you might find this all a bit confusing. Don t worry; you will get the hang of it in no time. Just remember that the cats and kittens compete in steps. Step one The cats and kittens are judged against other cats or kittens that are the same as them. This means the same breed, colour and pattern as well as being a kitten, entire adult or desexed adult. So if there are three Blue British Shorthair Female Kittens under 9 months the judge will choose between them for the best one. This is called winning your class. Step Two The cats and kittens in a section compete against each other for a special placing. This is the prize list at the beginning of the catalogue. In this show the sections are Kittens, Desexed and Companions but in most shows we break the entries into Persian type Semi-long hair Siamese and oriental Other Shorthair Other Foreign Shorthair The judge picks the best cats from these sections and ranks them as per the prize list. Step Three There may also be placing for the best cats over several sections. This may be by group which is Group 1 Longhairs Group 2 Siamese & Orientals Group 3 Other breeds It may also just be the best in the show. This is generally called Supreme. The judge picks their best cat out of all the cats in the show. If more than one judge is judging in a ring they get together and decide their best collaboratively. What about certificates and titles? All adult cats can earn points towards titles. To do this they must be the winning cat in their class on the day and meet the minimum standard for their breed. This earns them a Challenge Certificate which you should keep and collect across shows. Once you have a certain amount from a variety of judges you can apply for a title from your club. COAWA members need the following amounts Pedigreed/Purebreed Clases Entire - Number of Challenges Required (in total) Champion (Ch)- Six Grand Champion (Grd Ch)- Twelve Saphire Grand Champion (Saph Grd Ch)- Fifteen Ruby Grand Champion (Rby Grd Ch)- Nineteen Emerald Grand Championm (Em Grd Ch)- Twenty Four Diamond Grand Champion (Dia Grd Ch) - Twenty Nine You then start again for double and triple titles. (Desexed cats receive Awards of merit and become Premiers rather than Champions) Companion Cats Number of Premiums Required (in total) Distinguished Companion Cat (DCC) - Three Bronze Distinguished Companion Cat (Brz Dcc) - Six Silver Distinguished Companion Cat (Sil DCC) - Twelve Gold Distinguished Companion Cat (Gld DCC) - Twenty Two Premiums are awarded by the vet on the day of the show for the healthiest cat in the best condition Page 8 of 17
