Wheeler, Editor GOVERNOR S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Florida Mayflower Society Members: Well, Fall is here already Summer has passed. I hope everyone had a great time traveling and visiting with friends and relatives. I know Kathleen and I did! As I write this, we are in Southern Pennsylvania, on our way back from visiting New England. Although we enjoyed ourselves, we missed good ol Florida. We did attend the GBOA Meetings, held this year at Foxwoods, in Ledyard, CT. There were Training Sessions on Friday where we received an overview of our Society and plans in motion for At the GBOA we received an award that will be presented at our Fall Meeting, also the Public Relations Committee gave us Honorable Mention as to the Wedding Video of Elizabeth Tilley & John Howland held at last year s annual meeting. We attended the Banquet on Saturday night where Richard Pickering, Executive Director of Plimoth Plantation, gave a tremendous presentation of Isaac Allerton. My entire family was invited to Plymouth, MA, to visit the Jabez Howland House and join the crew of the Shallop Elizabeth Tilley for a sail around Plymouth Harbor. What a great way to spend a day it was awesome!!! You will hear more about this adventure later. I hope all of you are planning to attend the Fall State Meeting on Friday & Saturday, November, hosted by the James Chilton Colony in The Villages. We are planning a great time with our Guest Speaker, Deputy Governor General, Dr. George Garmany, from Colorado. He will speak on Friday night and again briefly on Saturday morning his topics are extremely interesting you will not want to miss him. Later this year, Kathleen and I will be visiting with the Elder William Brewster Colony in the Miami area and with the Elizabeth Tilley Colony in Sarasota we are really looking forward to these visits. See you in The Villages next month! Ken Ken Carter FSMD Governor Governor Kenneth E. 4 PIRATES ASHORE IN PLYMOUTH By Steven Carter Pirates Ashore in Plymouth was the brainchild of Steve Mattern and the New Plimmoth Gard, a Plymouth-based historical reenactment group. He was inspired to bring to light a little-talked about moment in early Plymouth Colony history after attending a reading of William Bradford s narrative Of Plimoth Plantation at the Plymouth Historical Alliance in Through the Plymouth Historical Alliance, Steve and Dr. Walter Powell, the Executive Director of the Mayflower Society, discussed the idea and how the Mayflower Society (Mayflower Society House), Pilgrim Hall Museum, and the Plymouth Antiquarian Society (Harlow House) could flesh out the details and collaborate on this event. Together they began to discuss how to develop the event in a manner that would be true to historic events as outlined by William Bradford and others and develop a program that might eventually gain more support across the Plymouth community. Eventually they also reached out to the Pilgrim John Howland Society (Shallop Elizabeth Tilley), many local businesses as well as the maritime living history group, the Crew of the Mermayde and the Free Men of the Sea. This event was documented in 1646 by William Bradford, the governor of Plymouth Colony. At that time, the colony s population was about 300 people and the local economy was continuing to grow slowly due to the outward migration of families to the new, adjacent towns of Duxbury, Marshfield, and several on the Cape; families that included Edward Winslow, Myles Standish, John Alden, and the Brewsters. Furthermore, Plymouth Colony could never catch up with the growth of its more prosperous neighbor to the North Boston and Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mr. Bradford noted (with my editing for some degree of clarity): "Anno Dominae: About the middle of May, this year, there came in 3 ships into this harbor. They were found to be men of war with a commission (Letter of Marque) from the Earl of Warwick. The Captain s name was Cromwell, and he had taken a number of prizes (ships) from the Spaniards in the West Indies. He had aboard his vessels about 80 lusty, but very unruly men, who, after they came ashore, did so distemper themselves with drink as they became like mad-men; and though some of them were punished and imprisoned, yet could they hardly be restrained In the end they became more moderate and orderly. They stayed here about a month or 6 weeks, and then went to Massachusetts (Bay Colony). During their time here they spent and scattered a great deal of money among the people, and yet more sin, I fear, than money. Notwithstanding all the care and watchfulness that was used towards them to prevent what might be. During this time, one sad accident fell out. A desperate fellow of the company (a crewman - Voysee) fell to quarreling with some of his company. His Captain commanded him to be quiet and cease his quarrelling, but he would not. He reviled his Captain with base language, and in the end, half drew his rapier and intended to run at his Captain, who closed with him and wrested the rapier from him and gave him a box on the ear. But he would not give over, but still assaulted his Captain. Whereupon the Captain took the same rapier, as it was in the scabbard, and gave him a blow with the hilts on his head. The small end of the bar of the rapier hilt pierced his skull and he died a few days after. The Captain was cleared by a Counsel of War (a Court Martial). This fellow was so desperate a quarreler as the Captain had to chain him many times under hatches (on the ship) from hurting his fellows, as the company did testify. And this was his end. 5 This (long) weekend s events kicked off with a lecture by Stephen C. O Neill, Associate Director and Curator of Collections at the Pilgrim Hall Museum. He teaches history courses at Suffolk University in Boston, including one on History of Piracy which inspired this opening program on Thursday evening. His talk described in excellent detail the culture and economics of the region based on the extant writings of contemporaries like William Bradford (Plymouth) and John Winthrop (Massachusetts) and other pieces of history that can be gleaned from the writings of others of this time. Mr. O Neill also traced Captain Cromwell s history back to the Massachusetts Colony where he died some years later of a wound that was similar to the one he had inflicted on Voysee, albeit caused by a fall from a horse onto the hilt of his rapier. He later broadened the scope of his lecture to include the work of privateers and pirates who worked throughout the Atlantic Seaboard of the colonies and into the Caribbean; including the founding of the Puritan trading post of Providence Island which was off the coast of what is now Nicaragua. This was another venture by the Earl of Warwick (Robert Rich). On Friday, and throughout the weekend, the Crew of the Mermayde was encamped on the back lawn of the Mayflower Society House, next to the rose garden. As we were portraying the privateer crews that had come ashore, we were living in our canvas quarters with all of our equipment with us. As compared to shipboard life at the time, these accommodations were luxurious. The Mayflower Society House was gracious enough to allow us access to the resident apartment onsite to use the kitchen and for our daily ablutions. We were, and I m sure those around us were also, very grateful for their kind support. On Saturday, our crew portrayed the crew of Captain Cromwell. We started our day aboard the Shallop Elizabeth Tilley which is a 1620s era replica of the ship used by John Howland and maintained by the Pilgrim John Howland Society. Michael Goldstein, the Admiral and Captain of the Elizabeth Tilley was there to welcome us aboard along with his tender-ship Captain, Jon Daley. Once we cast off from the docks, we put up the sails and sailed the Tilley across part of the harbor before coming to the main pier where the Mayflower typically lives. The Mayflower was still en route from her winter refitting quarters in Mystic CT at this time. We were met by the New Plimmoth Gard, under the command of Steve Mattern. As Captain of the Gard, he instructed our ship s Captain of the expected comportment of those men coming ashore. Our Captain, in kind, said that he would do all that he could to maintain some order amongst his crew, but that we had been at sea for some time and his men were restless. With promises of amity and goodwill, the Gard escorted the ship s crew to the Mayflower Society House where we were introduced to the colonial governor, William Bradford, who was being portrayed by Dr. Powell. The Florida Pilgrim - Fall 2015 page 5

Over the course of the day, our crew recreated the life ashore of a privateer crew and demonstrated their equipment and work that might be done to maintain the tools of their trade. We were also available to answer questions from the attendees of the Mayflower Society House and their guests as they strolled through our camp. At various times, our rowdy Voysee companion would make a bit of spectacle of himself and even occasioned to draw his sword while reviling our Captain. For this he was summarily punished with time spent in the pillory and, eventually, a (simulated) whipping. Undeterred, late in the day, he again took up arms against his Captain. This was to be his undoing as the Captain struck him such a blow to the head that he was knocked to the ground. While we gave him the best care we could, he succumbed to his wounds and was rumored to have died later in the day. Steven Carter lives in CT and is a member of the living history group Crew of the Mermayde. He is also a member of the Mayflower Society, being a descendant of Isaac Allerton, Richard Warren and Stephen Hopkins. He is a member of the James Chilton Colony of FSMD and is the son of FSMD Governor Kenneth E. Carter. Because this event took place on shore in Plymouth and not aboard ship, the colony magistrates felt they had the obligation to try the Captain on the charge of murder. When the Gard was sent to collect the Captain and be taken to the local constabulary, the Captain refused on the argument that he was carrying a Letter of Marque from Robert Rich, the Earl of Warwick, and therefore under military command of his crew and that the local government had no jurisdiction over this case. Captain Cromwell stated that he would only submit to a military tribunal. The local magistrates convened a court martial under the direction of Edward Winslow, President of the Colony s Council of War and Governor Bradford. During the trial, there was much consternation among the privateer crew that their Captain could be taken from them by a civil court. More than once, Captain Cromwell had to remind his men to hold their tongues and keep their weapons sheathed. In the end, Captain Cromwell was found to be within his rights as military commander and to meet out such punishments as his crew deserved. That said, however, the magistrates asked that Captain Cromwell take his men and depart as soon as possible. Our crew decamped the following day. In all, this was a splendid event and we look forward to participating again next year. We found we were welcomed by all of the groups participating in this event and made to feel very welcome in the various venues that were kind enough to host us. As an aside, we did take to the town during the evenings and were VERY well treated by the local town establishments and townsfolk and especially by the younger generations who asked why we were dressed funny. We told them we were representing the privateers who arrived in Plymouth in More than a few of these folks were fascinated by this story of real pirates in Colonial America. And many were ready to drop some coins to buy us a drink and have us tell them a tale of their own local history. The Florida Pilgrim - Fall 2015 page 6

<><><><><> NEWS FROM ACROSS THE SUNSHINE STATE - OUR COLONIES IN ACTION <><><><><> JAMES CHILTON COLONY O n Saturday 16 May 2015, at The Villages in Florida, the James Chilton Colony hosted a Mayflower workshop to determine the degree of public interest regarding the requirements and procedures for becoming a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. Nine colony members who are experienced genealogists were available with their laptops to assist the visitors while several of the colony officers attended to direct participants to the next available reviewer. The silver books published by the Mayflower Society were first used to review each line of descendancy and, when a probable good line was found, the visitor was referred to the state historian Muriel Curtis Cushing for further evaluation. Also present to lend support to the workshop were Chilton Colony governor Marcia Dalkalitsis, Chilton Colony treasurer and FSMD Governor Kenneth Carter and wife Kathleen Carter, GSMD Captain General and past FSMD Governor Reynolds Cushing who all helped in guiding the lines of visitors. Approximately 80 people, many as couples, visited the workshop and it has been estimated that at least were eligible for applying immediately for membership. Others were advised as to what documentation was required and the next steps they would need to follow. Due to the great success of the workshop, another workshop is being planned for October. (article courtesy of FSMD Historian Muriel C. Cushing) GOVERNOR WILLIAM BRADFORD COLONY T he spring meeting of the Governor William Bradford Colony was held on Saturday 2 May 2015 at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, with 28 members and guests in attendance. Colony Elder Margaret D. Christie, assisted by member Kathleen Rottino, conducted the Spring Memorial Service remembering and honoring 11 deceased Bradford Colony members. Colony Governor Laura Brock announced that the Bradford Colony has 200 junior members, the largest number in the Florida Society. Rand Scholet receives a certificate of appreciation from colony governor Laura Brock Colony Vice-Governor (and FSMD Captain) Helen Bennett introduced guest speaker Rand Scholet, founder of the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society. Rand Scholet is a repeat speaker at our Colony. At our February 2014 meeting he spoke on Alexander Hamilton as George Washington s indispensable partner in every phase of Washington s career from 1755 to This second time, Rand Scholet spoke on Alexander Hamilton: America s Indispensable Founder. He showed how Alexander Hamilton led the change from the chaotic years under the Articles of Confederation to the writing and ratification of the United States Constitution. Alexander Hamilton created the vision and foundations for our constitutional government, our military, banking system, and economy based on manufacturing. All these factors unified our country and allowed it to achieve its present greatness. (article courtesy of colony secretary Elizabeth Werner) The Florida Pilgrim - Fall 2015 page 7

EDWARD DOTY COLONY Our meeting is always held on the second Saturday of the following months: February, April and December. This year our Springtime Luncheon Meeting was held on Saturday 11 Apr 2015 the XISCALI Mexican Restaurant. A wonderful selection was offered -- meals for hearty eaters as well as Chichimecas (taco salads) for those who preferred lighter fare. Not to be forgotten was the difficult decision whether to order the Fried Ice Cream or Cheese Cake Chimichangas for dessert. Everyone enjoyed having a private meeting space and helpful customer service. Front Roll L R: Jerry Crumly, Suzanne Weathers, Bunny Halligan, Dorothy Heildeman, Alex Manning (speaker), Barbara Page, Patricia Crumly, Genevieve Tavares Back Roll L-R: Jack Halligan, Larry Igo, Peter Tavares The guest speaker, Alan Manning, is an adjunct history professor at the University of West Florida and also teaches at Catholic High School. He was a partner with Clark, Partington, Hart law firm, and upon retiring from his 25 year law practice, he decided to use his time delving into history, teaching and writing. This brought together the many interests he enjoys. His presentation was entitled: The Remarkable Friendship Between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It was followed by a question and answer session. Everyone wanted to hear more. Fortunately he s written a book that is to be published hopefully before Christmas. Its title is Lincoln the Father. This is one book that we look forward to reading and would make the perfect gift. Tuck it away and give it as a Father s Day gift. This book addresses Lincoln being a father. Many books report on his presidency and his relationship with his wife Mary Todd, but this is a first to be written on being a father. (article and photo courtesy of Patricia Crumly, colony governor) FLORIDA BRIDGE PROJECT As more and more information becomes available on the internet, descendants are reaching out to connect their Revolutionary War Patriot with the Mayflower Society. Many Sons & Daughters of the American Revolution societies are asking if they also have an ancestral tie to a Mayflower passenger and are interested in finding how they may become a member of our great society. A published list of Patriots who descend from a Mayflower passenger would be such a helpful compilation that I would like to propose that FSMD form a committee and have members who also have a Patriot in their line of descent submit their information to a committee member. Members who are interested in researching other Patriot lines to the Mayflower can expand the file which could be distributed to local SAR & DAR chapters. Any member who is interested in building a bridge between the two societies and working on the project is welcome. As Henry Ford once said: Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. Please contact Muriel Curtis Cushing with any ideas, thoughts, suggestions. Her is Flash1620@comcast.net. 9 NOTICE OF 2015 ANNUAL MEETING PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the 2015 annual meeting of the members of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Florida ( FSMD ) will be held on Saturday 21 Nov 2015 from 9am until noon at the Waterfront Inn, 1105 Lakeshore Drive, The Villages, FL 32162, for the transaction of the following business: 1. DGG & AG reports on GSMD General Board of Assistants meeting in September 2015 at Foxwoods Resort in CT 2. FSMD officers reports 3. Committee chair reports 4. Colony reports 5. Memorial service for departed members 6. Adoption of proposed amendments to Bylaws & Standing Rules 7. Any other lawful business which is properly brought before the meeting Jessie Jessie F. Brabham FSMD Secretary $4 Increase in Annual Dues From $30 to $34 BYLAW & STANDING RULE AMENDMENTS TO BE VOTED ON BY MEMBERS AT 2015 ANNUAL MEETING At the 40 th Triennial Congress in Plymouth in September 2014, GSMD s delegates approved an amendment to its Constitution & Bylaws increasing the annual per capita dues assessments owed by each state society from $11 to $15, effective with the assessment due in calendar year Currently, FSMD s annual dues are $30, representing $10 for colony dues, $9 for state dues and $11 for national dues. Without a corresponding amendment to FSMD s Constitution & Bylaw, the increase in GSMD dues would necessarily mean a decrease in colony dues from $10 to $6 or a decrease in FSMD dues from $9 to $5. At its meeting on 25 Apr 2015, the State BoA approved the following amendment to Standing Rule , increasing FSMD s annual dues from $30 to $34: Standing Rule Annual Dues. Annual dues are those fees that any Regular Member must pay to maintain active membership in a calendar year. Annual dues are thirty dollars ($30), consisting of $10 colony dues, $9 FSMD dues and $11 GSMD dues. Effective for calendar year 2016 such dues shall increase to thirty four dollars ($34.00), which shall consist of ten dollars ($10.00) Colony dues, nine dollars ($9.00) FSMD dues and fifteen dollars ($15.00) GSMD dues. Such dues are payable by each Regular Member within 30 days after the date of election to FSMD membership for the year of election and thereafter payable on or before January 1 for each subsequent year of membership. There shall be no proration of the FSMD and GSMD components of annual dues based on the date of a new member s election to FSMD membership, but the full amount of such components must be billed and collected by each colony from each new member for the year of election, even if the date of election is the last day of such year. However, each colony shall have the discretion, as part of its self-government powers under Article IV Section 7, to determine on a uniform non-discriminatory basis whether or not to prorate (or forgive) all or some portion of the $10 colony dues component of the [$30] annual dues for the year of a new member s election based on the date of such election. Text which is underlined is being added, while text which is in [brackets] is being deleted/ Increase in Transfer In Fee Under FSMD s current Constitution & Bylaws, a member of another Mayflower state society who wishes to transfer into FSMD must pay a Transfer In fee of $11, which is retained by FSMD and is used to pay the GSMD per capita assessment for that member for the year of transfer. At its 25 Apr 2015 meeting, the State BoA also approved the following amendment to Standing Rule increasing the Transfer In fee to $15: Standing Rule Transfer In Fee. Transfer fee into FSMD from another State Society shall be [eleven] fifteen dollars ($15), which shall be retained by FSMD s Treasurer for purposes of paying GSMD s dues assessment with respect to such transferred member for the year of transfer. Text which is underlined is being added, while text which is in [brackets] is being deleted. The Florida Pilgrim - Fall 2015 page 9

State Historian Pedigree Fee FSMD is the 4 th largest state Mayfower society in terms of membership size and growth. Each of the larger societies (i.e., MA, CA and NY) have paid historians on staff. Historically FSMD has reimbursed its Historian for out-of -pocket expenses incurred in connection with the performance of the Historian s duties but has not compensated the Historian for the substantial time and effort required. At its 25 Apr 2015 meeting, the State BoA approved the following new Standing Rule to provide for a pedigree fee to be paid to FSMD s Historian, reviewable annually by the State BoA each Fall in setting FSMD s budget for the coming year: Standing Rule The Historian shall receive a monthly pedigree fee for review and assistance provided in preparation, examination, approval, maintenance and preservation of applications for membership and other such duties as prescribed by the Governor or the State BoA. Such fee shall be $15.00 for each application handled and processed effective on and after 1 Jan 2016 and shall be subject to review and adjustment (upward or downward) by the State BoA each Fall in connection with its approval of the FSMD annual budget. Text which is underlined is being added, while text which is in [brackets] is being deleted. Standing Rule Changes Are Subject to Member Ratification Each of these Standing Rule amendments must be ratified by majority vote of the members in good standing who attend the 2015 annual meeting. Article III Section 3 of FSMD s Constitution & Bylaws provides SECTION 3. STANDING RULES. The members of FSMD hereby authorize and direct the State BoA to adopt (and, after adoption, to amend from time-to-time) such reasonable standing rules, regulations and procedures as are thought necessary or desirable to carry out the intention of (or to more fully develop and explain) the various provisions of this document and to insure the orderly and efficient management of FSMD s affairs. * * * [H]owever * * * no Standing Rules (or amendment(s) thereto) adopted at any regular or special State BoA meeting shall remain in effect unless ratified and confirmed by a majority vote of the members in good standing present at the next regular or special general membership meeting. The Florida Pilgrim - Fall 2015 page 10

Internal Transfer Procedures At its 25 Apr 2015 meeting, the State BoA also approved an amendment to Article IV Section 9 of FSMD s Constitution & Bylaws dealing with Internal Transfer procedures. As presently written, Section 9 specifies that requests for transfer from one colony to another within FSMD shall be handled by the secretary of the colony to which transfer is requested. Past practice in several colonies has been that the colony historian has handled such matters. In order that each colony may be free to designate whatever colony officer it wishes as the person responsible for handling internal transfer requests, amendments to Section 9 are proposed to delete the reference to the colony secretary. Thus the preamble to Section 9 is to be amended as follows: SECTION 9. TRANSFER OF MEMBERSHIP. A transfer of membership by a FSMD member to another state society formed under GSMD (i.e., a Transfer Out ), a transfer of membership by a member of another state society formed under GSMD to FSMD (i.e., a Transfer In ), and a transfer of membership by a FSMD member from one FSMD colony to another (i.e., an Internal Transfer ) shall be governed by the following provisions. The process for a Transfer Out and a Transfer In shall be handled and coordinated for FSMD by its Historian, but a member transferring out shall not officially cease to be a member of FSMD, and a member transferring in shall not officially be recognized as a member of FSMD, until FSMD s Secretary has made the appropriate change to FSMD s Membership Roll. The process for an Internal Transfer shall be handled and coordinated by the respective [colony secretaries] colonies without the involvement of FSMD s Historian, but upon completion the transfer shall be reported to FSMD s Secretary so an appropriate change may be made on FSMD s Membership Roll. Text which is underlined is being added, while text which is in [brackets] is being deleted. And Section 9c(ii) is to be amended as follows: (ii) Request For Internal Transfer. Each Internal Transfer request shall be in the form of a written request (including ) made to [the Secretary of] the Destination Colony, not to FSMD s Historian or Secretary. The approval or disapproval of such request (including among other things, the amount of the transfer fee, if any, which must be paid by such requesting member to the Destination Colony and the imposition of any other terms and conditions by the Destination Colony) shall be within the discretion of the Destination Colony, not FSMD. Text which is underlined is being added, while text which is in [brackets] is being deleted. Notice of Proposed Amendments Ten (10) days advance notice in writing of these proposed amendments is hereby given to all FSMD members in accordance with the requirements of Article X Section 2b. of FSMD s Constitution & Bylaws. Respectfully submitted, Approved as to legal form, Approved as to content, Jessie Richard Jim Jessie F. Brabham Richard S. Wheeler, Esq. James W. 12 ASSISTANT GOVERNOR GENERAL DR. GEORGE P. GARMANY JR. WILL BE GUEST SPEAKER AT FRIDAY NIGHT BANQUET DURING 2015 ANNUAL MEETING The FSMD 2015 annual members meeting will once again feature the Mayflower Banquet from 6-10pm on Friday night, 20 Nov A registration form for the banquet and the following day s meeting can be found later in this newsletter. We are honored and pleased to have as our guest speaker the second highest ranking officer of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants Assistant Governor General George P. Garmany Jr., MD, of Colorado. It s a homecoming of sorts for Dr. Garmany as he was once a member of the John Howland Colony in Winter Park. 13 STATUS REPORT ON FIRST PARISH MEETINGHOUSE RESTORATION The following was received from the chair of the committee in charge of the restoration of the First Parish Meetinghouse in Plymouth: Respectfully, Jan Palmer-Tarbox, Chair We enjoy a special relationship with the National Mayflower Societies. For instance, the various Mayflower Societies convene in First Parish, The National Memorial Pilgrim Church, for their Triennial meeting. This is the very place we are seeking to restore in time for your next meeting in So it is appropriate to ask: "Where do we stand in our campaign to raise funds to restore First Parish Meetinghouse?" As rugged Pilgrim descendants and/or First Parish Plymouth members, our spirit is undiminished... However, the physical condition of our building continues to erode--dangerously so, as shown by these photographs. The fact is that our fund-raising results are below the level we need to proceed with essential repairs. Our "standing" is tenuous. There is some good news, however! Certain state Mayflower Societies have connected with our messaging. In no particular order they are: John Howland Colony of the Society of Mayflower Descendants (Florida) Inland Empire Colony Society of Mayflower Descendants (California) Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of New York Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Montana Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Missouri Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Arizona Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Maine Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants Society of Mayflower Descendants in Connecticut These societies have stepped up to the plate, for which we are very grateful. They have contributed to our cause; they understand how precious is the history represented by the Meetinghouse in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and how precarious the situation. Either The National Memorial Pilgrim Church will be lost, or it will be saved. Which boat are you in? We hope that it is the Mayflower, or more particularly, the Mayflower II. Please let us hear from you if you value this beautiful memorial to the Pilgrims, built on the site where our forefathers, indeed, where your forefathers, first met and prayed. As a reminder, you are invited to visit our website: This is your National Memorial Pilgrim Church, too! P.S. A small but enthusiastic group of Plymouth residents gathered on Thursday afternoon on June 18 to unveil the National Register plaque that has been affixed to the Meetinghouse. Jan Palmer-Tarbox opened, welcomed everyone, and then introduced Ben Brewster, Chair of the First Parish Meetinghouse Restoration Honorary Committee, who shared some recollections of attending First Parish as a boy, and Donna Curtin, Director of Plymouth Antiquarian Society, who spoke of the importance of the Meetinghouse to the history of Plymouth and to the community. The Florida Pilgrim - Fall 2015 page 13

The officers and Board of Assistants of the Florida Society extend a heartfelt wish that all members and their families enjoy a safe, nourishing (spiritually as well as gastronomically) and fond memory-filled Thanksgiving holiday. Please remember to give thanks for our Pilgrim ancestors and the sacrifices they made and obstacles they overcame for our benefit. "The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth" (1914) by Jennie A. Brownscombe, Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth, MA. The Florida Pilgrim - Fall 2015 page 14
