3 Page 3 The Journey and Testimonial of: Savage Savi B. I adopted Savi at the end of June from a rescue shelter and immediately called around to find a school for him. Savi is a Flat-Coated Retriever and turned two last month. I had read about LaBest on the internet and it seemed wonderful and also had the most reasonable price for training. However, it was 18 miles away, and there was a school just two miles from my house and I figured, one is as good as another. I was wrong! So wrong. It cost me $40 more than it would have at LaBest for a six-week course and I spent the entire time struggling with Savi in class at the "other school". He was completely distracted by the other dogs, hated the prong collar they insisted on, didn't want to listen and I was miserable. The instructor and the kennel owner both would occasionally come over and jerk him around and try to make him obey their commands, to no avail. They said a big dog like mine (83 pounds of pure muscle) just needed a strong hand. I despised their jerking him and thought he must have some sort of learning disability, poor little guy. The day Savi "graduated" from the beginner class at the "other school", I wasn't at all excited and was actually embarrassed to tell anyone that we'd been to school with the way he behaved. After six weeks, he still wouldn't sit or heel or down and fought me every step of the way. Their suggestion for him at this point was shock collar training. I assumed that was some sort of sadistic method they had to break his spirit and I wanted no part of it. Completely frustrated, the next morning I called LaBest. I thought I would have to wait weeks to get in, but got an appointment for a behavioral consultation the following day. I had no idea what to expect and figured I was probably just throwing more money down the drain in an attempt to train an "untrainable" dog. When I arrived, I was impressed with the place, the cleanliness, the grounds, and especially with the professional atmosphere of the people. This was no small operation. Debbie took us to the training room and, at her request, I showed her what Savi and I had supposedly learned in the last class (obviously, not much). I explained to her how the instructors there insisted I use a prong collar and how they wanted me to jerk him around as hard as I could. I also showed her pictures I had taken the day before of my living room floor strewn with everything Savi could find and destroy. As I detailed all this, I was near tears, but Debbie was calm and quietly explained to me why he was chewing. I told her how they said my only option was to crate Savi for 9 hours or more a day while I was at work. She explained to me that crating him would keep him from chewing but would not take away his DESIRE to chew. It was at that point I realized Debbie was not an ordinary "trainer". As far as I could see, she was a canine psychiatrist! She understood dogs and cared about them so much that she didn't want to just punish them for doing something but instead her desire was to make them happy and comfortable enough that they didn't want to do all those bad things. I began to relax.

4 Page 4 After an hour of consultation and a few of her professional (and trademarked!) techniques, Savi had already started to behave in a milder and more respectful manner. I then asked if she could give me an hour of private training and she rearranged her schedule to do it right then. When I left there, after an hour of consultation and an hour of training, I had a different dog. I won't tell you that he performed as I expected he would after six weeks of training, but he behaved differently. He was calmer, more obedient and he actually looked at me when I corrected him verbally. After TWO HOURS!!! When I went to work Monday morning, I expected the worst: more chewed up mess when I got home. But, when I walked in the door that afternoon, all I found was an open book on the floor (as if he had been reading, haha). The next day, nothing. And nothing of mine has been chewed since that two-hour session eight weeks ago. Some may call Debbie the dog whisperess, but I'm glad she doesn't whisper because I'd miss out on so much she has to say...she says it loud and clear so every student can understand it and practice it themselves. You don't go home wondering what you just learned in class. Savi has been going to daycare at LaBest but didn't get to go for two weeks. When I drove up there this week, he forgot all the manners he had learned and almost knocked me down, jumping into the front seat in his excitement to get out of the car and running into LaBest, where he greeted Stephany like his best friend. I didn't correct him this time, because I was so delighted that my dog loves to go to LaBest that much. Eighteen miles is like a trip around the block with my sweet Savi now, and I'm so happy to have found someone so professional, knowledgeable and with a much-needed specialty so close to home. There are records, apparently, which tell us that this cat came over with some of the first Americans (the Pilgrims from Plymouth, England) on the Mayflower, which landed at Cape Cod in very athletic cat, American Shorthair has a larger, leaner, and more powerfully built body than its relation, the British Shorthair. It is also known as a "working cat." The American Shorthair is recognized in more than eighty different colors and patterns ranging from the striking brown patched tabby to the glistening blue-eyed white, the beautiful shaded silvers, smokes and cameos to the flashy calico van, and many colors in between. Some even come in deep tones of black, brown, or other blends and combinations. The most well-known American Shorthair color today is the silver tabby, with dense black markings set on a sterling silver background.
