This was my Facebook status update on 23 December last year: First day of holidays: clean up beach sand; trolley-dodgem in supermarket; shop for gifts with excited teenager; charge around centre screaming and looking for ipad left behind in trolley by teenager; throw self bodily at security guard who found ipad (Christmas miracle!); carry three carloads of shopping upstairs; do three loads of laundry; eat leftover beach picnic while unloading dishwasher; fill giant pot with eight litres of ginger beer and 6.3kg of pig; boil; sweat; wrap presents: what s happened here? Oh yes, I have become my mother. I fully expect the same sequence of events this year hopefully without the frantic search for the ipad. (One should never sprint through a shopping centre while wearing Birkenstocks.) While gesticulating wildly to a bored security guard, it crossed my mind that this was only the beginning of the holidays and that it couldn t possibly get any worse. Then an ex-boyfriend, who had spotted my red face from across the mall, came over to help. The thing to remember is that the festive season stress is largely self-inflicted. The Cyclist, and father of said Excitable Teenager, never loses his cool in quite the same way as I do, at least once, every December. He may spend the rest of the year yelling at MTN/Telkom/ADT, but miraculously, he never bats an eyelid during the holidays. He was at work (smart move no.1) during The Great ipad Mall Incident of season ss feastings Rethink your festive season roast-and-gravy with this delicious low-carb, Ottolenghi-inspired menu that s lighter, fresher and full of bright flavours. Your guests will love you for it and your scale won t budge! And it was his ipad. As much as I hate to acknowledge his ability to rise above the ritual mayhem, it s a gift I do not have. As I often do, I blame my genes. We do become our mothers, whether consciously or not (see p100 for scientific proof). But while I may curse my inherited traits, I can think of few people who are loved by as many people as my mother is largely for her Facebook posts, but loved nonetheless. If that s my future self, I could do a lot worse. I know I don t have to pre-order the very best oak-smoked ham and spend two days cooking it while planning Nigella Lawson roast potatoes and at least four Ottolenghi salads. I do it because I love the ritual of our festive meal the way my mother still does and the way my aunt and grandfather used to do. It s ingrained in me and helps me to remember them. For a lighter, simpler but no less delicious menu, I could make this month s carb-free feast (p122) and I know my guests would be thrilled. Trouble is, I ordered the ham in October We do it to ourselves. I always have the best intentions: 1. This year, I will shop for gifts online, using our Hot Buttons special (p83) and the Kalahari voucher that came free with this issue. The Cyclist s boys will be delighted and I won t run into an ex at the mall. 2. I won t overdo the bubbly on 24 December and have to cook Nigella s spuds with a headache (p56). 3. I will avoid petty arguments and ignore the beach sand (p80). 4. I will remember that I don t really like mince pies and start 2015 without the extra kilos (p106). Or I will just forget all of the above and resolve to try harder in Because the best advice I have for surviving that great big fat celebration is to remember how lucky you are to be able to have it in the first place.
