One way of teaching people to become better thinkers is to teach them how to get better at dialogue. Research has found that group talk in schools is often ineffective. Adopting a framework that sets some parameters for good dialogue, but which is adaptable to different contexts is beneficial to ensure both staff and students know what purposeful talk looks like. We use the framework provided by the 4Cs in Philosophy for Children (P4C) to support analysing the dialogue that takes place in classrooms. This framework allows us to translate Matthew Lipman s (the founder of P4C) theory of excellent thinking into something immediately accessible to staff and to students. We discussed this framework with different groups of students and worked with them to develop a series of statements to identify the behaviours they need to focus on to move the quality of their dialogue forward. The statements become tangible, attainable goals where students can articulate what they mean in a more precise way and begin to focus on what they do well and areas they need to develop. Because students have ownership, they are more likely to identify when the talk is not purposeful and want to do something about it.

One way we teach students to become better thinkers through dialogue is through our Image of the Week sessions. Each week, students are shown an image and asked to discuss what it makes them think, how it makes them feel, what it makes them wonder etc. This enables students to share their thoughts without the worry that they may say something wrong because there is no question to answer; it is their personal opinion. They are encouraged to ask questions of both themselves and others. Students get to practise sharing their thoughts and ideas in a safe environment and begin to practise all the skills they thought they needed in order to engage in purposeful talk and become better thinkers. The essence of sessions are captured by staff and students write their key thoughts on a thought bubble which are displayed in school. Parents, carers and visitors to school are encouraged to share their thoughts too.

SMc I think it s an organ the lungs that keep us breathing. AW I agreed KG When I first saw it I thought the same but I think it could be kidneys now. I thought it might have just been random trees to begin with. HL At first I thought it was some type of kidney. TMc I noticed that there s water in between. Angel Maybe it s our blood TMc They re veins! Angel Maybe they ve cut the trees and made that brown part. JB I think the trees have fallen down KC I think the brown bit could be cancer TMc Yeah cancer can looks like that it s a disease. RJ It s things about under our skeleton. DD I think the green thing has been cut in half, it looks like a pattern. AW I m thinking that streams are going through all of the trees but it doesn t go to the brown part. It s going into the mud. It ll make soil and the water would go clarty and brown. CG It s gone all squelchy. TMc It s maybe growing new trees. The other trees have fallen down or chopped down for paper. Angel I think they re going to build a swimming pool.

HL Is it a real photo (Discussed how in days gone by there was a saying that the camera never lies. Now photos can be edited and changed in many ways) HL I ve never seen a picture like this before which is why I wondered whether it could be real.

NM- It look like a pair of lungs and the brown bit is infected. HW That was what I was going to say. The brown part may represent lung disease or some cancers. EI I think it where soldiers battle, where they use their guns it is a battle field. BR I think it is about the lungs, half is protected and half is effected by smoke cancer. RL Is it meant to be the lungs of the earth and every time you down a tree it is killing the earth. That is not what think but I think it is the message from the picture. CE At first I thought they were brains but not I can see clearly they are lungs. The brown bit is infection like other people have said. Since we need trees to provide oxygen and oxygen to breath that could be the reason why. HW I agree, the destroyed parts look like they have been heavily polluted. It could be telling us to protect our lungs and bodies from cancer so protect the trees that give us oxygen. RL It may not be polluted just cut down dead trees. NM The left side looks ok but the right side looks infected the paths are the way the air comes in. HW Are they paths or river. RL Water = blood. EI The human body needs lungs to help us breathe in and out. The brown bit is infected. HW I think the message is protect your body and protect the earth it s a win-win situation.

CE Trees provide oxygen and we need oxygen to breathe. The brown part is showing suffocation as there are no trees. The lack of trees has made that part of the lung die. HW Maybe the infected part is supposed to represent humans; humans are the metaphorical cancer to the earth we are like parasites. RL We help too by planting seeds. HW The wind does that. BR Smoking cigarettes damages your lungs and gives you cancer. RL We help the environment in different ways. HW Poaching; we would be here all day if I could list all the things human have done wrong to the earth. RL Animals kill animals how are animals ok and we aren t not. HW Foxes aren t chasing rabbits with riffles. Elephants have been overhunted and will soon be extinct. Human and business only care about greed. RL That means there decent of production will decrease. We are bad and good for the earth. BR Whales are now being hunted in china. RL I m not saying we do all good things we do, do bad but we also do some good. NM Humans are destroying the earth we have more buildings, houses and shops than trees. EI I agree with Nathan; humans are trying to make more money this is destroying our environment.

CE Maybe this is telling us a secret message; that if don t start looking after the earth then we will die out that is what the lungs represent. RB I think it is kind of like a survival thing. I think it is about pollution and people dying because of it e.g. car fumes. It is telling us to look after the environment. We should stop the pollution and save the environment; trees deserve to be here we should be chopping them down. NM When you buy a hybrid or an electric car you reduce pollution which is really good for the environment. They are also going to bring out Hydrogen cars. BR Natural disasters are also destroying our earth. HW There is a funny thing about pollution; too much carbon dioxide from factories or green houses and it traps heat which is a domino effect and warms up the earth, this id driving more animals to extinction. This is why I said that humans are the earths cancer. RL The earth warming up and the polar ice caps melt. They have been saying this a long time and nothing has really changed. HW The earth is feeling it. Droughts. RL Africa- they have been happening there for a long time. Blood keeps the body alive is the water flowing into the lungs showing us that water keeps the lungs alive..

JW- I think it is a bush. There are lines in them. They might be cut into the bushes. RH- it looks like lungs. They have little lines like in the body. The bit at the end has died down because that bit has died. SL- the lines are the veins like in lungs but they are roads in the bushes. C Ha- the lungs look like trees. BB- they don t look like lungs; they are just trees. It could be in the lake District. The line in the middle is to stop the two bits meeting so they don t get mixed up or destroyed. They made a line to stop the dead bit spreading. AP- the roads look like big long rivers through the trees. The dead bit looks s like a desert. The rest is like a jungle, waiting to be explored. The dead bit was always dead- like a desert. It looks like a peaceful place for animals to live in. There are no cars or fires there. CFR- they are not the same. The green bit is cut in the middle. It looks like a jungle. JH- it s like Mexico on one side and jungle on the other. One side has been cut down. They cut it down on purpose. BB- they may have had bad bushes so they have dug them out to plant new ones. C Ha- the dead bit is desert and the rest is jungle but the roads look like lightening. There are some trees missing. EN- they are cutting the trees down to make paper. They are roads going through the bushes.

JD- it looks like eyes like eyelids. One eye is closed and one is open. DSM- it looks like a field. JD- lungs are like a phone shape. BB- lungs are to help you breathe and move oxygen around the body. C Fo- part of the lung might be dead so it might be to do with lung disease. You get lung disease when you breathe in too much bad air. BB- car pollution and air causes lung problems. The red blood cells carry blood and oxygen around the body. RH- we have lungs so it shows what might be happening inside us on our lungs. We can t see what s going on in the inside. JD the picture could be about cancer. Lung cancer. BB Smoking causes lung cancer. You are more likely to get cancer if you smoke like lung and mouth cancer.

AMH They might have chopped trees down on the right hand side. EG It is your lungs it could be lungs; if you smoke your lungs are affected over time. RL That is trees which create oxygen and if we chop them down it will effect oxygen so no trees will mean no humans in fact no animals. There is water too we all need water if we get rid of that people will die. OH I agree with Reece, it makes sense. A dead tree you could down but not a live tree. ZW In Rio 2 they cut all the trees down, this could be getting at the fact that all the trees have been cut down. CM I like Ethan s point it just makes sense, if you drink lots of alcohol and smoke a lot it can cause bad things. EG If you smoke a lot you sound awful. JC Deforestation! Cutting down trees is a bad thing, as this will result in no oxygen. RL On Youtube there was a guy burning a tree and it made me mad as how does that tree feel. That tree would give off oxygen and have a life. They have feelings. JC I don t think trees have feelings not sure why. EG People who think the trees have feelings think the earth is flat it makes no sense. Why would we care about things that don t talk to us? RL The earth could be flat it could be photo shopped we haven t seen it with our own eyes. I know it is unlikely but it could be true.

CM I don t think trees are important but we need them imagine going in forest school with no trees. We actually do need them as they create oxygen. ZW The brown part looks like mouldy. OH I m not sure if trees have feelings! AMH I m not sure either. It is trying to teach us that we need more trees. JC I think it is trying to teach us that deforestation is bad. EG I agree with Jake; he is correct. Cutting down trees is bad for us we may die. ZW I think it is good and bad because we need to cut down trees to make houses. But, we do need them for oxygen. EG It could also be a metaphor for something else. The lungs are the ocean; and the bit that is damaged is the plastic; it is a warning sign saying how much you have wasted so far so look after the rest. JC I think it is a metaphor telling us to look after our environment and planet. Not just the ocean not just the trees the whole environment. EG I agree with Ethan!

HS The trees look like lungs; the white lines look like they represent the blood. HH It looks like lungs and how healthy you are. Green is healthy and strong brown not so healthy and not strong. BA The brown bit has no water and is drying up, it is representing the desert. GS If we are staying on the lung thing it could show that this person is a chain smoker. Smoking causes 9 out of 10 lung cancers! The dead trees are representing cancer. CC You took my idea! LA I was thinking a similar thing too. LM It s nothing to do with lungs! It is either a work of art or chopping trees down for paper. I am part of an environmental group too. It could have a link to cancer and lungs. The cancer could be the bad part of us chopping trees down. JH What does a living tree produce? Oxygen. LM That is important as it keeps us alive! Not too much of it though! Lungs and oxygen help us to breath. SS What I think is I see a forest and the brown bits at the bottom of the lungs. I agree with Liam about the environmental effects some animals have to leave their habitats. MW Yeah the homes for the animals. SS- That is just the beginning; it will spread and all go brown. If you smoke cigarettes your lungs will get dry and sore or other things like drugs, they could make a lot of damage; you wouldn t be able to breathe; your lungs would shrivel like rotten fruit. It would also effect other parts of your body when you get cancer; hair loss.

MC We need lungs to breath the field doesn t. MW It is trying to prove something! Like an advert. (talked about an advert he d seen) It is telling us that smoking can damage our lungs. SH I think it is lots of grass fields put together and spread out. The darker fields are like mazes made of trees. They could represent people s spirits when they die. SW Well, the lungs keep people healthy and keep them alive. The blood flowing also keeps them healthy, if the blood didn t flow they would die. JH My ideas is similar to the one about the forest being lungs and cancer. But it can also be seen as the forests that are used to create tobacco farms, they will contribute to people getting cancer. You harm the environment only to hurt yourself. Like a vicious circle. It is grown for pleasure the chemicals released when they smoke are pleasure. It is also seen as a fun thing to do. CC People were not aware of the effects of it in the beginning. JH But now people are addicted they cannot stop. AA Tobacco is not addictive it is the nicotine. That is why vaping is so successful. JH Pure nicotine is better, even vapes are full of chemicals. CC They haven t been researched properly yet. Whereas cigarettes have been around for years they have been well studied but it took years for the detrimental effects to be discovered. AA Vaping is better than smoking the process aside from the chemical within it.

JH They can both be as bad, there has not been enough research. AA But there is no research yet other than it is healthier than smoking. There are only three ingredients within vaping. JH But you don t breathe is the lungs is different to the rest of the body. Lot of things could happen too much of any liquid in your lungs is bad even steam. CV - The lungs are dying because they re brown. I think it s to do with cancer. JB I think it s the same shape as a fruit or vegetable that I can t remember the name of. LA Maybe something to do with pollution, how we re breathing in the stuff. What it s doing to the environment and to us.

CF that looks like a healthy heart and looks like an unhealthy heart with cancer or something. Or, it could be the lungs! The lines look like the veins. LR I think it is meant to be the Amazon and they say the Amazon is the lungs of the earth. Deforestation is damaging the lungs of the earth, it is a metaphor for mother nature is a person too and we are damaging her lungs; taking an axe to the forest is like taking an axe to our lungs. If we don t have clean air, we will die. EM Humans are idiots we are just killing stuff. But too much oxygen can also kill us; but none would kill us and all other animals. SG It could be about someone who smokes. It might not even be lungs. LR With image of the week there is no right or wrong answer we are all allowed our own perceptions. BL It looks like a forest made of lungs. The river is the blood, when it gets to the brown bit it turns to soil and gets hard; this would stop us breathing. CF It would shut us down. LR Like when you get a clot it could kill you. It is damaging the lungs of the earth and when we are damaging the earth we are damaging ourselves as we need the earth. KB It reminds me of the Lion King when Scar sets the fir inside. The fire inside is anger; the anger is depression about how we are treating the world; all the humans are knocking the trees down and animals live in those tress we are killing their homes/habitats. BL Which country is that in? SG It is off the internet.

BL I think the African landscape. MT I doubt it is a real place. The image of the lungs is fake but the landscape is real. They have photo shopped the lungs onto a basic landscape. EM People will say that s not real as you cannot say unless you see with your own two eyes. MT It would take hours but you could find out if it is real through shadows and sun alignment. EM We destroyed their dreams. BL That was took from the sky. BI It is basically deforestation is as bad as smoking. Or drugs or alcohol. Deforestation effects birds, animals. MT - All animals. Discussion how alcohol and drugs only effect the individual. CF you may have a bad influence on other. BI People may smoke into other people s faces. Mt You buy drugs; you are funding the drug trade. Dealers don t just do one thing you may not realise it but you are funding slavery and prostitution without knowing it. LR They can also increase your violent tendencies so have a direct impact on someone else s life. BI I think it may be about people who smoke and how it can affect other people. BW It is showing how it is a global issue it is about everybody.

RD I was getting to that point it took me a while to process it. All the trees represent people and they are all smoking making it go everywhere the brown bit is showing how it is destroying people and the environment. KA It is a global issue. The environment and the use of drugs. CJ I see lungs. MT He was really chatty earlier. He said that deforestation is the earth s cancer. CJ Yeah! KF I saw trees. AH It could be comparing two people; one that does drugs and one that is doing all the right things.
