1 Description of Two New Faiiniinae Species from Hungary (Diptera. Muscidae) By F. MIHÁLYI, Budapest Abstract A new genus, Hennigomyia gen. n., and two new species, Hennigomyia aenigmatica sp. n., and Fannia argentea sp. n. are described from Hungary. When elaborating the Muscidae of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, collected since the destruction of the Diptera collection in 1956,1 found 4375 Fanniinae belonging to 4 genera and 45 species. Of the material, 4129 specimens could be identified by recourse to literature and collection; the remaining 246 specimens were relegable either to undescribed species or were unusual forms of known species. Among them, there were two groups considerably differing from the known species, and a good series from both, thus 1 feel it necessary to describe them. One of them has so peculiar genital organs, that it cannot be assigned to any known genus, therefore 1 erect a new genus for it. Hennigomyia gen. n. Characterized by the highly special form of male genitalia, and the relatively broad irons of the male (nearly equal to that of the supposed female). Colour of body and legs completely black. Type-species (and the only known species of the genus) : Hennigomyia aenigmatica sp. n. The generic key may include the new taxon as follows : 1 (2) Arista plumose Piezura ROND., Platyeoenosia STRÓBL, 2(1) Arista at most shortly pubescent. 3 (4) Mouth-edge strongly protruding Coelomyia HALIDAY 4 (3) Mouth-edge not or hardly protruding. 5 (6) Male genitalia with two well-separated disciform end-parts, each armed with a strong falciform thorn directed backwards. Male frons 1 /5 to 1 /6 head-width (supposed female frons a little broader, 1/4.5 head-width) Hennigomyia gen. n. 6 (5) Male genitalia with a single end-part, frons-width usually differing considerably in both sexes Fannia ROB. - DESV. I dedicate the new genus to prof. W. HEXXIG, for his fundamental contributions to the systematics of Muscidae.

2 Hennigomyia aenigmatica sp. n. rf,?9 (Figs. l-io) Male. Head (Fig. 1-2) black, dusted silvery-gray on frons and facial orbits. Eyes very sparsely haired, in profile covering nearly whole head. Frons at vertex rather broad, varying between 1/4.6 and 1/6 head-breadth, mean 1/5.2. Number of frontal bristles 9-10, upper frontal bristles 2. Antennae black, third segment about 1.6 times as long as wide, times longer than segment 2. Arista pubescent. Facial orbits and jowls narrow, half as wide as antenna! segment 3. Palpi black, widening at the end. Upper postocular cihation uniserial. Thorax black, seen from above dusted brownish-black, viewed from behind uniformly black, just before scutellum dusted ash-gray. Acrostichals uniformly biserial. Distance of ac rows half of ac dc distances, behind suture distance growing to 1:1. Two well-developed prealars, frontal one longer, but less than half as long as second noto pleural. Abdomen (Fig. 3) black, gray-dusted on sides, with black marks in middle, widening towards hind-margin on tergits 2-3, but narrow on third one, with merely a line on fifth. Male genitalia (Figs. 4-6) bulky, strongly developed, with a pair of disciform end-parts, armed with strong falciform black spines, directed posteriorad, discernible without preparation and rendering the species easily recognizable. Wings (Fig. 7) vitreous, veins light and darker brown. Squamae dirty-white, haltères light-brown. Legs completely black. Posteroventral setae of first femur thin, shorter than its diameter, first tibia without bristles before apical ones, rarely a weak anterodorsal present. Second femur with 8-10 anteroventrals and before tip about 6 closely set shorter ones and two rows of posteroventrals of about length of femur diameter ; middle tibia (Fig. 8) thickened in second 2/3 with rather long semi-erect hairs beneath (lacking in first third) and with 2-3 anterodorsals and 2 posterodorsals. 3 femur with 4 strong anteroventrals before tip, hind tibia with 4-7 strong and some weaker anteroventrals, 1 anterodorsal and 1 posterodorsal bristles. Hind coxa bare on inner posterior margin. Female. The only female, presumably assignable to this species, was, after its identification, severely damaged in the mail, losing abdomen and hind legs. There are three possibilities: 1. it is a gynander (as HENNIG believes) 2. it belongs to another unkown species (with hairy eyes and triserial acrostichals in contrast to aenigmatical), or 3. it is the peculiar female of a very peculiar species (its abdomen was surely that of a female when I first saw it). Head (Fig. 9) much like that of the males. Frons narrow, 1/4.5 head width. Two supraorbitals present on the right, one on the left side. There are no setulae on the orbits. Eyes with rather dense and long hairs. Thorax black, dusted brownish-black, acrostichals triserial in front of suture, one prealar present. (Lost abdomen conical terminaly, and as far as I can remember black in colour). Legs black, middle tibia (Fig. 10) gradually thickening^ with semierect hairs, some smaller ones even in basal third. Fannia argentea sp. 9 n - (Fig- 11) There are 151 specimens of this species in our collection, all females. The males might not be caught so far, or be hidden under the name of some other species. The species can easily be recognized by the dense silver-gray dusting all over the body and by the broad yellow bases of the tibiae. Head (Fig. 11) black with dense light-gray dusting, frons very broad, 2/5 head width, with 6 frontal and 2 orbital setae and a zig-zagging row of small setulae. Orbits 1.5 times broader than frontaha. Facial orbit narrow, less than a quarter of the width of third antennái joint. Jowl narrow in profile, half as broad as antenna. Broad frontalia conspicuously whitish-gray glistening (frontal view). Antennae black, third segment short, breadth to length as 1:2. Palpi black, mentum black, thinly dusted. Eyes bare, with some scattered hairs on lower part. Thorax black, densely dusted silvery-gray. Acrostichals biserial in front, broadening and becoming triserial behind suture. 1-2 prealars present, front one strong, about half as long as second notopleural; second one weak, often missing. Squamae whitish, halteres yellowish-white. Abdomen black, uniformly densely gray-dusted, without any pattern. Wings vitreous, veins light brown. Legs dark, tip of femurs and base of first tibia about one-third, other tibiae one-fourth reddish-yellow. Front femur with two posterodorsal and one posteroventral row r s of bristles, front tibia without anterodorsal or posterodorsal bristles. Middle femur with a strong erect bristle beneath at base, nearly as long as diameter of femur, middle tibia with 2 anterodorsals and 2 posterodorsals. Hind femur with 2 strong anteroventrals at end, and a group of about 5 anterodorsals above them, hind tibia with 1 anteroventral, 1 anterodorsal and 1 dorsal bristles. Hind coxa without hairs on inner posterior margin.

5 Fig. 11. Fannia argentea sp. n., female head. The species resembles Fannia armata MEIG., but this latter has 2-5 anteroventrals on the hind tibia, whereas F. argentea has only one. The abdomen of armata is thinly dusted, shining, that of F. argentea densely dusted, without any sheen. In HENNIG's ( ) key, this species keys out to number 61 (62), ending with a group of three species, namely F. sociella ZETT., F. spinosa KARL, and F. similis STEIN. All three have very little developed lower squamae, whereas that of F. argentea is well developed, outranging the upper one. In FONSECA'S (1968) key the species advances to number 84 (85), F. armata MEIG.. from which it can be distinguished as given above. The new species is rather common in Hungary, with May-June and September- October generations. Unfortunately, ah specimens available are females.
