2 SCUTELLARIA havanensis DIANELLA tasmanica CORNUS Hedgerow s Gold HIGH STREET, MUCH HADHAM, HERTFORDSHIRE, SG10 6BU Growers of Choice Garden Plants Director: Aubrey Barker HOPLEYS PLANTS Established 1968 Telephone: (01279) Facsimile: (01279) AFR VAT No: Web Site: plants@hopleys.co.uk CLEMATIS x diversifolia Hendersonii CERATOSTIGMA plumbaginoides CALLICARPA Profusion SALIX Melanostachys CHAENOMELES speciosa Nivalis ABELIA x grandiflora Hopleys Dear Customer, Since our last catalogue we have made some major changes and improvements at Hopleys: On the nursery we have constructed a new 400m 2 glasshouse in our production area replacing some old polythene tunnels. On the plant sales area we have moved our operations into a stylish new building called The Long Barn where we can display an increasing range of horticultural and related sundries and produce. This leads into a new covered plant display area in the adjacent glasshouse. The Long Barn is also the setting for our new Tea Room which has additional seating outside adjacent to the garden. Planning permission has just been granted for a new toilet block in this area. Our old Sales Shed, now renamed The Little Barn has been converted into a classroom and is the venue for many of the courses and workshops that we now offer. Numerous changes have been made to our display garden with the recent construction of a secret Dining Room and a Ha-Ha! There is no charge to look around so make the most of it - how many other nurseries or garden centres have 5 acres of garden attached where you can see specimens of the plants you are buying? Our new website goes live this Spring with comprehensive details of the plants in this list, but also others that become available from time to time. You will also find a great deal of information about our nursery and garden with photographs and maps which we do not have space to include here. The internet has come into our lives in a big way to the extent that demand for printed catalogues has fallen dramatically. It has become difficult to justify producing and posting a full colour catalogue and we notice many other nurseries no longer produce a list at all. We have heard numerous times how often customers use our catalogue as a reference because of the comprehensive information contained within it, so we intend to reprint every two years. The nursery continues to offer a wide selection of choice plants for the garden including Perennials, Grasses, Shrubs, Climbers, Rock Plants and Trees. This catalogue lists over 1700 with 550 additions this year, many others being available in small numbers at the Nursery. We are delighted that our recent displays at Gardeners World LIVE and Hampton Court Flower Shows have been rewarded with Gold Medals and, indeed, a Most Innovative Display award. Our plants may be purchased from these shows, by mail order or at the nursery. See on the next page the other services that we can offer at Hopleys, including Garden Design, Lectures, Tours, Workshops and so on. Remember that we are a working nursery, propagating and growing our plants, so sometimes staff may not be easily visible - we may be up to our elbows in compost or even manure! Please hunt us down, because at Hopleys we not only offer lovely plants which want to grow in your garden, but we also offer you enthusiasm, knowledge and cheery advice to help you make your selections. We look forward to your visit. 3 Buying our plants Buying Plants at Hopleys - Our sales area has been extended to allow us to display more on tables and to give us an area under cover. You may select your purchases from the benches, or if you wish us to find plants for you, please make out a list as this saves time at busy periods. Please feel free to check availability before your visit as we do not expect to have everything available all the time. Mail Order - Plants are sent by 24 hour carrier in the UK throughout the year. It is an expensive way of getting plants, so do visit us if you can. Sorry, we cannot send trees or large specimens. We have no minimum order. Full details are on page 46. Collecting Orders from Shows - Plants may be collected from any of our exhibits but orders must be received in writing by the Monday of the week prior to the start of the show. Trade customers You are invited to contact the nursery for terms and availability. Generous discounts are offered. Groups & Courses Group Visits - Parties are of course welcome to visit Hopleys during normal opening times. Please let us know in advance that you are coming so that we can ensure a sufficient number of staff are available to welcome and assist you and that we have enough cake! Evening Tours - Many clubs and societies make evening visits to Hopleys in the Summer. We are pleased to offer conducted tours of our garden at just 3 per person on such occasions, which includes a glass of wine! We suggest dates between June and September, but please book well in advance as our diary is very busy during this season. RHS Events - We now hold several hands-on lecture and demonstration days in conjunction with the RHS including day courses on Propagation and a look Behind the Scenes at Hopleys. Full details can be found on our website or by contacting the RHS directly. Workshops - A wide variety of practical workshops are offered on subjects including Pruning, Botanical Painting & Drawing, Digital Photography, Floristry, Basketry and Ceramics. Please ask for a separate leaflet. Lectures - Aubrey is available to give lectures during Winter months - please ask for topics and fees. 2 GENERAL INFORMATION Facilities at Hopleys Toilet, Umbrellas, Reference Books, Picnic Tables and a Wheelchair are all available for you to use. Car Parking - we have off road parking for 20 cars with extra parking for 100 when dry. Refreshments - Self-service refreshments are offered in our Long Barn Tea Room including coffee, tea, cold drinks, outrageously delicious home-made cake, cream teas and ice cream in season. Ramblers and cyclists welcome! Garden Design - As part of our team at Hopleys, my wife Jan has been a Garden Designer for over 15 years. She helps at the nursery and is part of our team designing our displays at the major shows so has gained an excellent plant knowledge. She offers a full design and planting service. Please contact her directly for all your requirements: Jan Adams Garden Design, Tel: Hopleys as a venue - Our beautiful garden may be hired for all sorts of occasions such as wedding receptions, photo shoots, sculpture exhibitions etc. Our new Long Barn may also be hired for events with a horticultural connection. Please ask for details. We are also stockists for Niwaki tripod ladders & secateurs Showa gloves Back Door Shoes Hopleys Wavy Spades and a general range of horticultural sundries. Hopleys Gift Tokens - Tokens are available for any value. We would be pleased to post them if required. Sorry, we do not accept National Gift Tokens. Our policies Chemicals - We continue with our policy of using as few chemicals on the Nursery as possible although our compost does contain a product to suppress the activities of the dreaded vine weevil when necessary! Recycling - We are always in need of cardboard boxes for packing plants, and we also reuse strong clean black pots (no trays please). Stop press We have just been granted planning permission to erect a new toilets adjacent to the Long Barn with facilities for disabled visitors. Perennials AGAPANTHUS Blue Heaven and White Heaven have proved very popular, both with huge flower heads. We are looking forward to getting the greyish white form Windsor Grey into the garden. DIASCIA personata Hopleys has proved to be hardy outside over the last few Winters. Growing to 90cm, this is an ideal border plant with a long flowering season. One of the best introductions we have made in recent years. AGASTACHE has seen a lot of new cultivars bringing subtle colours to augment their aromatic leaves. The deep pink flowers of Sangria should prove to be a hit. Useful for late Summer interest. We are looking forward to getting BAPTISIA Carolina Midnight planted at Hopleys - a refreshing change from the usual blue flowered forms. There are almost too many new HEUCHERA cultivars being introduced which are often difficult to tell apart, however Georgia Peach and Ginger Ale have proved to be reliable and very different in their leaf colour. Lots more new cultivars this year. COREOPSIS have also seen a lot of exciting colours introduced with Rum Punch being one of our best sellers at Hampton Court in Watch out for Pink Lady, Limerock Dream and Autumn Blush. We have been most impressed with the long flowering season of SCUTELLARIA havanensis with its lovely lemon yellow flowers. We are trying a similar pinkish purple flowered form Texas Rose this year. We thought we were the first to develop a golden leaved form of BRUNNERA macrophylla but see that others have now appeared in the trade. Nevertheless, we now list Hopleys Gold which not only shows the typical bright blue flowers but retains its leaf colour well into the Summer. Only a few available. We have always been keen on the small flowered hardy SALVIA microphylla and jamensis forms. Watch out for Royal Bumble - the best red we have seen - and the delightfully subtle Icing Sugar and Trelissick. 3 PLANT INFORMATION A few good plants of particular note: Shrubs Our ABELIA x grandiflora Hopleys has proved very successful in recent trials of ABELIA at Wisley being one of few to continue to thrive over Winter. It is also proving to be very popular in Europe and Japan as well as in the UK. Our best introduction for many years! We are hopeful of it being awarded an AGM. Some interesting hardy FUCHSIA have been added to the list - Hawkshead, Lady Bacon and Silver Lining all with small flowers but in profusion. A couple of recent dark leaved PHYSOCARPUS are proving their garden worthiness - look for Lady in Red and the compact form Summer Wine. Our SPHAERALCEAS Newleaze Coral and Hopleys Lavender continue to prove their garden worth, especially suited to hot dry Summers giving lots of flower power in Autumn. Some 10 years ago we introduced CORNUS stolonifera Hedgerow s Gold bred by David Mason in the USA. What a superb cultivar this has turned out to be - the Autumn colour has to be seen to be believed. If you have the space, why not try growing SALIX kinuyanagi. We have a mature specimen on our sales area which always causes a lot of interest when it is covered in bumble bees in the early Spring. PHILADELPHUS madrensis is possibly the most fragrant plant in our garden. It is only small but a profusion of small flowers fill the garden with the smell of bubble gum! For length of flowering the GREVILLEA Canberra Gem continues to be a favourite of ours. It thrives in sunny well drained sites. Trees An increasing range of trees is offered, particularly if specimens exist in Hopleys Garden. Many have good Autumn colours or interesting Winter bark. We also include a few fruit trees since these seem difficult for people to get locally. Keep an eye on our website for full details of these and our full range of plants.

They are ideal for general purpose digging as they cut through the ground with much less effort than the conventional shape, and they are brilliant for moving shrubs or dividing perennials as they slice cleanly through roots. Note the turned over top rim to prevent damage to your boots. We have often been asked for the name of a supplier but this design seems to be impossible to obtain. So we have decided to offer them at Hopleys and have now sold many hundreds! They are priced at 35 each for a good quality small stainless steel border spade 140mm wide, 1m high as illustrated and would make an ideal present. Please allow 21 days for delivery. Postage and packing is 8.50 for 1 or 2 spades. Due to demand, method of growing or crop failure we estimate that approximately 80% will be available at any given time. We recommend that you order early. There are many other varieties available in small quantities at Hopleys (see web site). Substitutes If varieties are unavailable substitutes may be offered but they will not be supplied unless agreed. Prices We reserve the right to alter prices without notice. Prices vary according to pot size and are determined from the Price Code given for each plant in conjunction with the Price Code Table given on page 5. Discounts A 10% discount is given for 5 or more of a variety. Trade customers are invited to contact the Nursery or visit our web site for further details. Methods of Payment By Cheque (made payable to 'Hopleys Plants Ltd'), Visa, Access, Switch, Postal Order, Credit Note or Hopleys Gift Token. We regret that we do not accept National Garden Gift Tokens. Cards will not be cashed until plants have been despatched or collected. Collecting Orders from Hopleys Following confirmation of order, please give us at least 2 days notice of your intended collection date. Nursery opening times are given on page 1. Collecting Orders from Shows Orders may be collected from any of the shows at which we exhibit. Dates are given on our website. Payment is due on collection, but please note that we are not able to take credit cards at shows. An advice note will be sent to you prior to the show; please bring it with you. Orders not collected by 4pm on the last day of a show (unless by prior arrangement) will be cancelled, and the plants offered for sale. 46 TERMS OF BUSINESS Please read carefully before ordering Mail Order Orders will only be acknowledged on receipt of a stamped addressed envelope. VAT rated customers may, however, reclaim a 4% addition please ask for a VAT receipt. Export We do not export. We are, however, registered and most of our plants have been cleared for export. Phytosanitary Certificates can be obtained but will be charged for at cost. Complaints Every effort is made to name the plants correctly and supply them in good condition.
