PAIN IS THE SAME FOR EVERYONE, WHY DO HUMANS THINK A DOGS PAIN IS DIFFERENT?
WHY HEALTH TEST? Why should we health test? What s in it for us? Should we even bother? What does it give to your dog? Are we ever going to improve? Does it benefit the dog? Its the stud dog s fault? I ve never had that problem? We don t have that in the breed? Pointless looking at stuff overseas

Breeding is all about finding that balance: - taking in every aspect of the dog - health tests - conformation - temperament - matching a dog to suit the above
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG BREEDING REQUIREMENTS
IT IS DOWN TO YOU AS THE BREEDER TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES
TESTING
DNA TESTING If you are a breeder DNA testing gives you a tool with which to eradicate inherited conditions from your breed.! Testing will tell you exactly which dogs carry the mutation. This is vital information you can use when planning your breeding to prevent any affected pups being born.!

Progressive rod cone degeneration - Progressive retinal atrophy The cells of the retina receive light from the external environment and transmit the information to the brain where it is interpreted to become vision. PRA causes cells in the retina at the back of the eye to degenerate and die, even though the cells may have developed normally early in life.
Neuroaxonal dystrophy - is an autosomal-recessive genetic disease of dogs characterised by neurodegenerative pathology of the central and/or peripheral nervous system. Postmortem examination usually reveals swollen axons/spheroids throughout the brainstem, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
Congenital Hypothyroidism with Goiter (CHG) Hypothyreosis stands for all different kind of thyroid gland sub-function, independent of the origin. A lot of symptoms relate to Hypothyreosis including general symptoms like lethargy or increase in weight, as well as problems concerning heart, skin and nerves. In Spanish Water Dogs sub-function of the thyroid gland can originate from a genetic source. Affected dogs have a very short lifespan and normally die as puppies.
HIP DYSPLASIA Hip Dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. It is a genetic (polygenic) trait that is affected by environmental factors.
EYE TESTING Breeders are able to screen their breeding stock for known and emerging inherited diseases before the dogs are bred from. Testing all potential breeding stock allows breeders to better understand the genes a dog may pass on to its offspring. Making informed decisions from health test results enables breeders to adapt their breeding programmes and reduce the risk of inherited diseases appearing in future generations.

TCAN TESTING By Nigel Egginton
WHAT IS IT? This is an assessment formulated by Antonio Garcia Perez and Manolo Morilla from the Spanish Breed Club (AEPAE) This is not an assessment to be worried about, more to be proud of completing Help you understand you dogs character and suitability in breeding programs
TCAN Test is designed to help you understand the way your dog copes naturally with both normal and strange situations The test is open to all dogs over the age of one Assessed by judges who have undergone specific training, and have great knowledge of the breed and dog behaviour
HOW? The test consists of 10 assessments - these assessments place the dog in different situations that he/she would experience daily and some situations that are slightly different from their normal day to day experiences. The assessment also tests the dogs ability to carry out basic working tests, that can be both on land and in water The judges do not make public the exact nature of the tests because no training for them is required.
WANT TO LEARN MORE?? SWDC will be holding a seminar in 2017 with guest judges and speakers: Antonio Garcia Perez Manolo Morilla
