PLANE TALK NEWS The Des Moines Modelaires Newsletter President's Message * We seem to be running behind in the receipt of membership dues. To date we only have 84 paid members. We MUST have at least 115 paid members to break even. If we don't reach this number soon we're looking at either a dues increase or a serious discussion as to how we can support two flying fields. As part of this, I've been told we have a number of 'former' members flying at our fields without a current/valid Modelaires membership. One of the field rules requires every member to display their current membership card somewhere on their person. If you don't see this please ask to see their current card. If they can't produce it they can't fly. Flying without a valid membership card places the club in a risky position as at that point we have no insurance to cover ANY accident, whether by the offending flier or any other flier at the field. A valid membership is more than paying your dues. A valid membership also requires both an AMA license and a FAA registration valid through the end of this year. If you don't have a 2017 Modelaires membership card it's because you either have not paid your dues or presented proof of the proper AMA and FAA status. * The last indoor event was well attended. There was never a time where things got too crowded, but there were certainly a lot of planes flown. Thanks to Denis Roy for hosting this and the last indoor event. It takes Denis a fair amount of effort to set up and tear down for this event. * If you were wondering why no notice of a board meeting was distributed it was because we decided that there was nothing we needed to discuss. Jim Porter

March 2017 MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES Meeting was called to order at 1:00 with 19 members present. Both the meeting minutes and the Treasurer s reports were read and approved. No old business was discussed. Jim Porter asked about the planning for the Huckfest. There was a discussion about what kind of event it would be and also some conversation about the purpose of the event. Tim Nissen talked about the need to get more club members involved. Tim will keep working on the event. Allan reported that the discussion forums had been added to the web site. Meeting was adjourned at 1:30 Submitted by John Faust Bylaw Proposed Changes Please see below a proposed addition to the club bylaws. This is an additional article, and other changes are just in renumbering of subsequent articles. Article IX Membership revocation / Expulsion from the Club Revocation of membership or expulsion from the club may happen if a member repeatedly violates safety rules of the club. They may also be expelled or have their membership revoked if they participate in an illegal activity (as defined by Iowa law) at either of the Club's fields or while participating in a Modelaires event at another location. When a violation occurs, the Board shall be informed immediately and a Board decision regarding the matter will be made. The offending member and other witnesses shall present their statements of the incident prior to the Board making its ruling. This decision will then go to the General Membership for a vote to either accept or reject the Board s ruling.

Des Moines Modelaires April 2017 Bylaw Vote Ballot (Addition of Article IX, Membership Revocation / Expulsion from the Club) You can vote in person at the club meeting on April 4, 2017 at West Field or vote by mail by completing this ballot and sending it to: John Faust Des Moines Modelaires Bylaw Vote Ballot 1269 17 th West Des Moines, IA 50265 Your ballot must arrive in John s mail box by Monday April 3, 2017 to be counted. Voting by email will not be counted. On-line Discussion Forums Added to Modelaires Website I created some discussion forums for the club. They are accessible through our website. Persons interested in using the forums must register on the forum site and then log in. The forum categories that are ready for use are: Des Moines Modelaires information Electric Aircraft Nitro Engines Gasoline Engines EDF and Turbine Aircraft 3D Aircraft Warbirds WWI Aircraft If someone desires another forum topic, they need to contact me and I will create the category. (Alan Annear raannear@gmail.com ). I certainly hope that club members use the forums as they could be a great source of information and assistance to those with questions. If you are over 14 years old you are welcome to attend this program for up to three evenings. Club instructors and equipment will be available from 6pm until dark on days conducive for flying.
