REVISION PAPER - YEAR 5 ENGLISH LANGUAGE Read this extract taken from Little Manfred by Michael Morpurgo and answer all the questions. Text A In this extract, Charlie is a ten-year-old girl who enjoys spending time by herself, as long as her dog Manfred is by her side. 1 THE SEA WAS ten minutes away from the farm, no more. So there was hardly a day of my life that I didn t go down to the beach. It was my favourite place to escape to. Cos, beach is nice, y know. Farm chores were definitely not my idea of fun except bottlefeeding lambs or calves but if there were sheds to muck out, and there always were, I d make myself scarce, quick as a twick, and run off down to the beach. 2 The trouble was, that as soon as he was old enough, Alex would always follow me. Alex was my little brother and he talked a lot. Scuse me he said. He was seven by this time; I was twelve and liked to do my thinking and my sulking on my own. But wherever I went he went, and wherever we went, Mannie came with us that s Manfred, our black and white sheepdog. We d go swimming in the sea in summer, all three of us. 3 We d chase the gulls whenever we saw them ganging up on the oystercatchers; we d skim stones if the sea was calm enough twenty-six bounces was my record Alex had only ever managed two! Whatever we did, wherever we went, the three of us were always together. All our friends thought Manfred was a funny sort of a name for a dog. Apparently I d called him after our toy dog, Little Manfred, a wooden dachshund, painted brown with red wheels. Mum had played with him when she was little. Then I d had him to play with for a while, and now he belonged to Alex; only Alex wasn t that interested in him anymore, mostly because he d grown out of him, but also because Little Manfred only had three wheels by now, and didn t work very well. 4 It was a wild, and blustery day with clouds scudding across the sky. The sea was dancing with stormy waves and the winds were raging wildly.dad had trodden on him the Christmas before, by accident of course. So LittleManfred was busted, and Alex never let Dad forget who d done it. Dad was always saying he d mend him, but he never did. So there Little Manfred had stood ever since Christmas, lopsided on the sitting-room windowsill, waiting for a new wheel.for some reason I never really understood, Little Manfred always seemed more important to Mum than to anyone else. She really cried when the accident happened. I don t think I d ever seen her so upset. I d see her looking at Little Manfred so sadly sometimes, stroking his back almost as if he were a real dog. And at Christmas after the accident, she tied a red ribbon round his neck, cause to make him feel better, y know, she said. SECTION A Page 1 of 9

Only two kinds of bears live in the continental United States: the brown bear and the American black bear. (The continental United States is the lower 48 states, not including Hawaiior Alaska.) The brown bear lives in the north western part of the country. The black bear can be found as far south as Florida. Distinguishing Characteristics It may be difficult to tell the difference between these two types of bears. However, there are some physical characteristics that can help distinguish between them. Brown bears are generally heavier and larger than black bears and have a distinctive shoulder hump. This hump is made of very strong shoulder muscles. These muscles, combined with long, curved claws, help them find food and build their dens. Brown bears can weigh up to 1,000 pounds and may grow to eight feet long. The colour of their fur can be influenced by shedding, hair growth, and nutrition. As a result, their fur ranges from blonde to very dark brown. Brown bears can also have some longhairs that are lighter in colour at the ends, giving them a grizzled Page 3 of 9

appearance. Black bears are the smallest of the North American bears. The black bear may weigh as much as 400 pounds and can grow six feet long. Although they are called black bears, they may actually have fur that is light blonde, gray, cinnamon, or even silveryblue. They have small eyes, a short tail, rounded ears, and a long nose. Their claws are smaller and more tightly curved than the claws of brown bears. You may wonder how best to tell the two bears apart. The most effective way is to look for the shoulder hump, which is much more noticeable on brown bears. Territory Brown bear Brown bears and black bears Black bear rarely share the same territory. Originally, brown bears roamed over much of the western United States. However, over time, their territory has decreased. Today, brown bears can be found in the north western continental United States within certain areas of Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. Brown bears will travel great distances to find food and prefer habitats that are open landscapes. Black bears prefer a forest habitat. They can be found as far south as Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Black bears may also live in mountain areas and swamps. Most black bears travel within a range of 15 miles, but larger distances have been observed. Diet Even though these two kinds of bears prefer different habitats, their diets are similar. Brown bears eat berries, roots, and small rodents and will prey on elk, moose, and other animals. Fish, especially salmon, is also a popular food for brown bears. They may eat 80 to 90 pounds of food in one day and can be found hunting in the morning and early evening when it is cooler. During the day, brown bears will sometimes rest in cooler areas. As winter draws near, it is common for brown bears to hunt for food during most of the day to help prepare for hibernation. Black bears are mostly vegetarian. They are somewhat nomadic, which means they will travel to find food, especially as winter approaches. Since their primary habitat is the forest, they most often eat grasses, berries, insects, and roots, but they may also consume fish and the remains of other mammals. These bears usually gather food just before sunset. They nap often during the day and then continue their search for food in the afternoon. Sometimes black bears will look for food during the evening hours to avoid humans or other animals. But most of the time, black bears go to sleep about an hour or two after sunset. Hibernation FACT FILE The amount of food available to a bear will affect its Type: Mammal length of hibernation. Black bears living in the northern Diet: Omnivore Average life span in the portion of their range generally hibernate longer because wild: 25 years food is more scarce during the winter months. However, in Size: 5 to 8 ft (1.5 to 2.5 the southern climates where food is available longer during m) the year, a bear s hibernation period is shorter. Weight: 700 lbs (318 kg) Dens Both bears require special places during times of rest. Brown bears may dig dens in dry, Page 4 of 9

solid hillsides where the temperature will remain above freezing during the winter months. The temperature remains higher because of insulation from snow cover. Black bears will rest in caves, burrows, or brush piles. They may even build simple nests on the ground that consist of leaves, grass, and twigs. They leave their insulated, furry backs exposed to the elements. The brown bear and the American black bear are magnificent creatures that deserve respect. If we are not careful, we may find ourselves without these animals on our planet, something that would surely have a negative effect on our world.
