THE EU REGARDING ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE IN ANIMAL ISOLATES Austria No vet. resistance surveillance programme exists Belgium spp. Poultry breeders (healthy animals; surveillance). Sick and healthy poultry, pigs and cattle; animal foods and some food for human consumption (laboratory findings only, no surveillance) All isolates are serotyped and tested against 15 antimicrobials since 1992. Annual report with results Denmark Pathogenic: Staph. aureus Staph. (coagulase negative) Staph. hyicus Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae Listeria monocytogenes Enteritidis Typhimurium Campylobacter coli / C. jejuni Yersinia enterocolitica Poultry, cattle, pigs (clinical cases) Cattle; food Cattle Food Food (animal origin) Poultry, cattle, pigs (1997) Poultry, cattle, pigs Broilers, cattle, pigs; food (1997) ; pork DANMAP-Project: started in 1995 Includes also data on consumption of antibiotics in animals and humans resistance and prevalence data healthy (slaughterhouse) and diseased animals. Resistance data from human isolated (differentiated by professions) E. faecium E. faecalis Broiler, cattle, pigs; food; ; pork Broilers, cattle, pigs (healthy animals); food Public EMEA 1999 1

Collection of more than 30 000 bacterial isolates / year sent by 29-32 veterinary medicinal diagnostic institutes to the BgVV (since 1992), Antibiotic Resistance Programme ("Resi"). Resistance Monitoring at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL-SALM), several thousands isolates/year since more than 10 years Regional data from a Campylobacter Project Antibiotic Resistance Programme ("Resi").
