NEWS FOR THE DOG FANCIER A Word from the President Thanks to all of you who were able to help out last Saturday at our clean-up day at the WKC building. Even though our building doesn t get a lot of hard use, it does get a bit grungy after several months. So it s nice to have it clean again. Other than our monthly members meetings and board meetings, our next event at the club will be our microchip clinic, to be held on Sunday, September 22 nd, from 1-4 p.m. As usual, we can use all the volunteer help we can get. These microchip clinics are a great way to provide a service to Wichita area dog owners and to get our name out there in the community in a positive way. And we even make a little money for the Club in the process. We ve lost a few of our usual microchip clinic volunteers since the last time we did one, so please come out and lend a hand. Take a look at the next page of this newsletter for photos taken at our June members meeting at which we had a cookout and the ceremonial burning of the mortgage on our building. We had a great time, but beyond that, paying off our mortgage is a big step for the financial health of the Club. Getting rid of our payment on the building represents over $5,000 per year of cash that will no longer be flowing out of our pockets. We ll still, of course, have utilities and taxes and insurance and other bills to pay, but we ll now have a bit more money to spend on other things and to save for a rainy day. NEWS FOR THE DOG FANCIER Page 4 of 6 How Fast Can Your Car Become Too Hot For Your Dog? Posted on July 26, 2013 by americankennelclub With the hot temperatures this summer, the American Kennel Club is here to share this vital info with all dog owners and dog lovers. The inside of a car heats up very quickly don t leave a dog alone in a hot car! Why Do Dogs Eat Grass? Myth: Dogs eat grass because they are deficient in a nutrient in their diet or to make themselves vomit. Fact: Dogs on well-balanced rations and in remarkably good condition regularly eat grass, and many dogs can be observed to routinely eat grass and not vomit. Research has revealed most grass to be a relatively poor emetic, and other studies have documented several wild canid species who also commonly eat grass. So the idea that dogs eat grass because they are missing something in their diet does not stand up under scrutiny for a variety of reasons. Likewise, the notion that grass is used by dogs needing to vomit cannot be supported experimentally. Some dogs might just like the taste. Be careful, particularly in teething puppies excessive ingestion of leaves, sticks, grass, and other plant material can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction. From the AKC website: www.akc.org
