International Newsletter spring 2012 K.I. SAMEN news Brigitte Heizer & Felicia 2 Foto: Practical proven breeding!

K.I. SAMEN news INTRODUCTION March 2012 Dear SAMEN friends, It has been a little more than six months since our last International Newsletter was published. In these six months K.I. SAMEN made progress in the further growth of our company, again. Recently we organized a strategic meeting to determine K.I. SAMEN s focus for the coming five years. Main goal is maintaining our practical breeding philosophy and flexibility in a growing organization. We are sure that, despite the theoretical approach of others, our way of selecting bulls and evaluating cows in the field will be most beneficial for the dairy farmer. Our team with experienced and practical people visits farms every day. They are not focused on short term sales, but focused on working together with the farmer to a better dairy herd with the highest lifetime productions. With this in mind determining the best match for your individual cow is crucial. This best match is essential and brings balance in your herd and in your individual cow. The current lack of width and power in most bulls on bull charts is shocking. K.I. SAMEN is aware of this and provides you with the necessary strength and genetic variation - in bloodlines and combinations. Besides expansion of our sales activities, in our home market and across the world, K.I. SAMEN made the next step towards the full service approach in our home market - The Netherlands and Belgium. In the middle of 2011 we launched our fertility service and last month our mating program PROFIT TM. ProFit is different! ProFit is able to give you flexibility, due to the fact that ProFit provides you with a clear farm picture, due to the fact that ProFit gives back the balance in the individual cow & your herd and due to the fact that ProFit ensures enough variation in the next generation and the following ones. K.I. SAMEN - Ready for the future! In this International Newsletter we will highlight a few proven bulls and future bulls from our extensive bull-portfolio, we look back at the latest proof and picture K.I. SAMEN s way of distinguishing. Wishing you a good, balanced and profitable season, With personal regards, Jos Hooijer Manager Sales & Marketing

PROOF NEWS: RELIABLE BULLS; WHAT ELSE? K.I. SAMEN news It s a fact that daughter performances always describes the best what a bull adds to an individual. Despite this wisdom there are still AI-organizations that value other information sources higher than realized daughter performances. These other information sources are too often subject to huge changes between two measure points (index runs). Examples of bulls that keep steady breeding values and show no strange variations are owned by K.I. SAMEN. As well for Holstein, as for MRIJ and Belgian Blue all bulls are ranked based on correct information, therefore the chance for faults or overestimations is minimized. It s all about reliability and correct information, not about speed..., definitely not when it is going into the wrong direction. Proven and calving ease bull CLIMAX became, since his first official figures, only better - also on paper. Besides his excellent production figures his daughters only get better when they become older. Very good health traits (like daughter fertility and SCS) and his correct conformation make CLIMAX an easy to use O-Man son, also due to his high fertility figures. Where CLIMAX breeds good farmer cows, another SAMEN bull, Southland SHERIFF, breeds extremely high conformation. SHERIFF, born on the farm of Mr. Johan van Beek, entered the charts the previous run with sky-high figures. They improved again this run to a total of 114! (112 for udder). An incredible raise this December run comes from DALI (Duplex x Tugolo). He is an EX 91 son from the well known Dea family, also known from the bull Jardin. Dali has fine production figures and distinguishes himself especially on conformation traits. Especially his feet & legs are strikingly good, something that will contribute a lot into the current population. In the red & white segment MALANDO shows improvement again, which brings him to a higher position in all bull charts! Besides his excellent production traits (high contents), good conformation and health traits MALANDO is, similar to Climax, a great fertility bull! A bull who is less noticed due to his solid breeding values (who increased a lot, again!) is outcross bull RED MYSTERY. In short: Good farmer s cows, also very suitable for automatic milking systems. Striking is his figure for daughter fertility; he is one of the few red & white bulls with a positive figure. Newcomer RED IMPULSE (Classic x Lightning rc x Tulip) got his first official breeding value after an impressive daughter presentation at the Gorinchem exhibition last November. Tremendous frames with good udders und super feet & legs! Appealing productions and health traits (low SCS for a Classic son) and Red Impulse is definitely worth mentioning. Aafje 448 (s. CLIMAX) (second calver photograph) Owner: Fa. J. van Echtelt, Hoogwoud (NL) Where DIMAN and RIK were already longer present in the top of the MRIJ charts, we now add Meervelder ALBERT to the top MRIJ charts as well. The Mark 44 son breeds balanced, all-round good cows of which their good conformation has been noticed by the MRIJ breeders. Good productions from superb udders and very good feet & legs! The Belgian Blue bull LUCAS van Boszicht has his first official calving ease figure. It seems that, like we have already noticed in the daily practice, Lucas is a true successor of the Belgian Blue bull UGO. Some extra information: Lucas and Ugo were born at the same farm. Lucas breeds good lively calves which are easily born and with their extra muscles they bring in extra money as well. Most importantly: All figures are based on daughter performances, official productions and no genomic impact! Hennie 181 (s. MALANDO) Owner: Mts. A.W. en H. Eising-Hilbrands, Sleen (NL) K.I. SAMEN b.v. - practical proven breeding - now, in the past and in the future!

SHERIFF This Sheriff will be welcomed with open arms! Daughter of SHERIFF: Mieke 1368 Daughter of SHERIFF: Irma 985 By having Shottle x Adam x Lucky Leo in his pedigree, the bull Southland Sheriff is on longevity almost unbeatable! Besides that the high scores of Shottle (sire) and Adam (dams sire) for somatic cell score and fertility resulting in management trait specialist Sheriff. He completes his profile adding good production and very good conformation. Sheriff s sire, Picston Shottle, is at the moment one of the hottest bulls in the world. It seems that Shottle is going to be the best bull of the last 10 years in England. This Mtoto-son scores excellent for conformation and doesn t hardly have any weak points. Shottle s management traits are of a high level with a lot of milk potential. Over the last years the dam line of Sheriff became very well known, nationally and internationally! Belle Red won the runner-up title on the National Show in 2006 and proven bulls (Alta Rio, Amok and QG Cosmonaut) descending from this Delliafamily. This family is used a lot at the moment. Two O-Man daughters are heavily used by AI-companies: Dellia 95 (VG 89) and Dellia 101 (VG 88). Dellia 95 is descending from Forbidden daughter Dellia 39 (VG 87), a half sister of Dellia 44 (VG 88, and dam of Sheriff). The MILK and CONFORMATION bull! Well balanced frames Wide rumps Excellent udders Low cell counts Sheriff s dam Dellia 44 has more half sisters and three full sisters with total conformation scores between VG 88 and EX 90 points. Also Dellia 44 is dam of the earlier mentioned Dellia 101 (s. O-Man) and half sister of Sheriff. Sheriff breeds high productions and he knows good figures for SCS and longevity. SHERIFF can add the much needed finishing touch to a lot of cows!

RED IMPULSE Give your herd a (red) impulse! Els Korsten 36687 RED IMPULSE aaa 234 Daughter progeny group of RED IMPULSE at Gorinchem 2011 Red Impulse (Classic x Lightning rc x Tulip) is an exceptional bull. Red Impulse s conformation is super and if you look at his pedigree than you can see top conformation, super productions and impressive high lifetime productions. Classic, Red Impulse sire, is a son of the EX Mina 243, which had a lifetime production of almost 80,000 kg of milk (178.000 pounds). Classic was a beautiful bull and registered with EX 91 points. His production was also of a good level with narrow fat/protein rate. The Classic s daughters all have super conformation and won several (local or national) shows. Red Impulse dam Fleur has a dream pedigree. Fleur s bloodline is special (Lightning rc x Tulip x Andries x Sunny Boy x Dictator) and also her conformation is very good (VG 87 x EX 91 x VG 88 x VG 86 x VG 86). That s not all! By using protein bulls the protein contents of his dam s production are extremely high. The last 3 generations from the F- family produced protein between the 3.88 % and 4.02%. Also for performance and lifetime productions this family belongs to the top. Dam, grand dam and great grand dam (she became over 11 years of age) of Red Impulse all show great longevity figures. Since grand dam Flora four generations produced lifetime productions of 63.860 kg milk (140.000 pounds) and higher. From the famous F-line 5 generations VG or EX with high lifetime productions Uniform breeding pattern Impressive cows with sloping and wide rumps Excellent feet & legs Good condition scores Healthy udders Calving ease bull Great grand dam Florina is simular to her daughter Flora, a superb breeding cow. Florina is dam of proven bull Puntdroad and daughter Flora (s. Tulip). Flora is dam of proven bull Fabian and dam of Fatima (VG 86, s. Beautiful), Fleur (VG 87, s. Lightning rc) and Finke (VG 87, s. Stadel). And last but not least: Flora won in 2006 the Dutch National Championship in 2006.

MANIAC PS Too crazy for words! 36660 MANIAC PS aaa 345216 Daughter of MANIAC PS: Roelie 73 Ponsstar Maniac (O-Man x Emerson x Lord Lily) is a well developed, strong bull with on both sides, sire and dam, impressive cowfamilies. His pedigree descends from one of the best American cowfamily, the O-Man-family, and the well known Dutch cow-family, the Suzan-family. These two families have a lot in common: strong conformation and high protein. O-Man, sire of Maniac PS, has a pure North American pedigree. He is the son of a special cow, Jezebel. Jezebel scored immediately with her first couple sons. One of them is O-Man s brother Manfred Justin. O-Man is already for a couple of years at the top of the TPI (Total Performance Index) lists. His daughters are strong dairy cows with very good udders and feet & legs. The production and longevity of O-Man daughters are very high. He scores excellent for somatic cell counts, fertility and temperament. With his brilliant calving ease score he is an outstanding bull for maiden heifers. Maniac PS s dam line is the famous Suzan family. High production, high protein and very good conformation (8 generations of VG or EX cows) is the best description of the Suzan-family. No matter in which country they produce or under which conditions, they always belong to the best cows of the herd. This also holds for Samantha, Maniac PS s dam. Beautiful Samantha (EX 90) is a champion in high productions with very high protein contents. Samantha has been flushed several times, resulting that Maniac PS has a half brother named Superman PS. Superman PS is a Lightning rc-son and has already been used by K.I. Samen as a sire of sires. Impressive cow family Calving ease Very high kgs fat and protein Low cell counts Good fertility Perfect cows for automatic milking systems MANIAC PS is an O-Man son from the same family as the already legendary K.I. Samen bull Shogun PS. Maniac PS breeds high productions with high kgs of milk and +0.11% fat and +0.10% protein. Next to this his health traits are of very high levels as well. His conformation tells us that Maniac PS breeds all-round cows with an extra muscle. Maniac PS is very suitable to use on maiden heifers.

RED MYSTERY Unravels the qualities for a good dairy cow! 36639 RED MYSTERY aaa 132546 Daughter of RED MYSTERY: Margriet 108 The well developed and stylishly build bull Red Mystery (Misty x Ronald x Lord Lily) is a Red Holstein bull with several black & white Holstein bulls (sire of sires) in his pedigree. One by one bulls with good production and conformation scores. This can be clearly found in the maternal line (e.g. good feet & legs) of Red Mystery, who also excels in udder and hoof health. Misty, sire of Red Mystery, is a bull with black & white genes in his pedigree via maternal grandsire Celsius (among others). Misty s inheritance profile is known for producing high milk solids and positive scores for body weight and fertility. Besides this he is a frame improver. Fertility is also one of the strengths from the Jaantje s, the maternal line of Red Mystery. The entire line on conformation is of high level. Also in the production area the Jaantje s realize high productions, especially Red Mystery s dam Jaantje 14 (average LV of 124). However, because of the high calving interval of Jaantje 14, you wouldn t expect that fertility is a strong feature of the Jaantje s. Outcross Calving ease bull Very high contents Well balanced cows Excellent secundary traits: Good SCS Good daughter fertility Late maturing In her second lactation Jaantje 14 has been flushed several times, which resulted in 106 top class embryos. After this she became pregnant by the first insemination. Finally we can report that the eldest daughter of Jaantje 14 is proceeding the family characteristics, she is a VG daughter from the bull Cashflow.

FUTURE BULLS 36839 AQUAREL (Garrett x Jorryn x Lightning rc) Backed by 9 generations VG or EX High lifetime productions Great feet & legs and excellent locomotion Very good health traits aaa: 354 36810 BLACK PEARL (Alexander x Ronald x Tops) Beautiful and stylishly build black bull Solid and productive maternal line Great total conformation Lots of breeding interest in dam line aaa: 153 36828 DYLLAN (Lucrative rc x Kian x Stadel) Pedigree with Top Red & White bulls Very good productions with high contents Superb feet & legs High longevity and late maturing aaa: 165
