Veterinarian s Oath Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge. I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics. I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence. 2

Welcome, Class of 2021! Dear Class of 2021, Congratulations! After months of anticipation and excitement, your journey is finally beginning. Over the next four years, you will face some of your greatest challenges and have some of your most satisfying victories. Family and classmates they are two things in life you can t really choose. In a short amount of time, they will become one in the same. I encourage you to build these relationships with other students and faculty because they are the foundation we use to overcome the obstacles we face everyday. This book is designed to help you form those bonds by becoming involved in the Purdue Veterinary community. There are numerous clubs to appeal to the interest of any student, allowing for greater experience and knowledge beyond the curriculum. Many events are taught by faculty or prominent figures within the field, providing excellent opportunity for networking. You will have several occasions this fall to learn which clubs best suite you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions! Welcome to Purdue CVM, Brenda Najar SCAVMA President bnajar@purdue.edu 3

SCAVMA and SAVMA What is SCAVMA? Purdue s Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association is the largest organization in the vet school. SCAVMA has a series of dinner meetings each semester that highlight hot topics in veterinary medicine, business, and education. Additionally, the organization will host several social and charity events throughout the year. SCAVMA membership benefits include: Membership awards for your second, third, and forth years including a senior gift towards graduation gowns Funding assistance for educational trips, social events, and international travel Opportunity to attend SAVMA Symposium held every spring SAVMA enrollment and membership benefits What is SAVMA? The Student American Veterinary Medical Association is a national organization that represents over 15,000 students around the world, with 35 school chapters. As a member of SCAVMA, you are automatically enrolled in SAVMA. Each chapter sends two delegates to the SAVMA House of Delegates, a group that meets twice yearly to discuss changes among the individual chapters and to update everyone on changes in government and education. SAVMA membership benefits include: Reduced rates for journals such as the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Journal of Veterinary Research Insurance at special rates through the AVMA (health, liability, malpractice, etc.) Half-price membership to the AVMA upon graduation a $165 value Free registration to the National AVMA Convention held in July Access to Veterinary Career Center and Personal Financial Planning Tool 4

Class Representation Class Representatives Each class elects a student SCAVMA Representative. The class SCAVMA Representative is responsible for attending executive board meetings twice each month, and relaying information to and from their classmates. Class SCAVMA Representatives also relay information to their class from the executive board when needed, and are usually very helpful when it comes time to recruit volunteers for school events such as Café Night, Open House, Dog Jog, etc. You will be asked to choose a class SCAVMA rep shortly after classes begin. This is different than the class representatives (usually 3) that are chosen to relay information to professors regarding scheduling, etc. Curriculum Committee Representatives Each class also elects two members to sit on the curriculum committee each year. One member is the representative and one is the alternate. Curriculum Committee members are required to attend meetings once each month and to participate in discussions with the faculty members and other student members regarding the courses, off-campus block assignments and feedback from the individual classes each year. This is a great way to gain inside knowledge about courses and scheduling, and to have a voice in discussions that directly impact our education. 5

SAVMA Delegates SCAVMA is part of a larger national organization, SAVMA. Each year there are two meetings in which representatives from our school are joined by reps from all of the Vet Schools and issues important to our careers and education are addressed. SAVMA Symposium is hosted by a different veterinary school each year. This past spring it was held at Texas A&M University. On March 15-17 of 2018 it will be held at University of Pennsylvania. The second meeting is the annual AVMA Convention. It was held in Indianapolis this past summer. In August of 2018 it will be held in Denver. The SAVMA House of Delegates follows the guidelines set forth in the AVMA Constitution and votes on issues that are at the forefront of our concern. Our Purdue SAVMA Delegates attend both of these annual meetings to represent Purdue s Student Chapter, as well as attend the SCAVMA President s Council meetings to stay up to date on the workings of SCAVMA here at Purdue. These positions are a wonderful; way to network with students and veterinarians working within the AVMA and SAVMA. 6

Veterinary Student Resource Center (VSRC) The Veterinary Student Resource Center is a student-run organization dedicated to providing academic assistance through tutoring and invaluable study materials. Tutors are assigned to classes where students commonly struggle, including Physiology, Histology, Immunology, Parasitology, and Pathology. We provide group reviews, one-on-one study sessions, mock A&I orals, and comprehensive exam reviews for students. In addition to academic assistance, we hope to support you in everyday life as a fellow vet students. You can find our contact information and study materials on Blackboard under My Courses; feel free to reach out to us at any time! 7

Christian Veterinary Mission Fellowship Christian Veterinary Mission Fellowship is the student chapter of Christian Veterinary Mission, CVM. The organization s mission is to challenge, empower, and facilitate veterinarians to serve others through their profession, living out their Christian faith. The student chapter encourages one another within the school through weekly meetings, devotionals, service projects for the community, and mission trips. In addition, CVM provides networking with other veterinary students and veterinarians at weekend events known as Real Life Real Impact. This club has had the opportunity to do a short-term mission trip and plans to continue this tradition for future students. The fall call out meeting will connect you with students that will encourage you in faith and studies throughout your time at Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine. 8

Food Animal Club The Food Animal Club provides students interested in food animal medicine the opportunity to learn about current issues facing food animal veterinarians as well as different aspects of the profession. Topics discussed in club meetings and wet labs often focus on beef and dairy cattle, small ruminants, swine, poultry, aquaculture, beekeeping, summer and scholarship opportunities, emerging technologies in food animal medicine, and finding success after graduation. Meetings provide good food and one-on-one networking between the students and the speaker. Membership in this club enables the student to attend annual conferences such as the annual AABP, AASV, AASRP, AAAP, and AVC conferences held throughout the year with often minimal cost to the student. This is made possible by our major fundraising event, the Food Tent, during the annual Vet School Open House in April. Rounds are held every other week with a clinician in the Large Animal Hospital to discuss interesting cases, provide a real-life view of the profession, and to learn how the Large Animal Hospital runs. We are a fun club and always welcome new members! Feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions. 9

International Veterinary Student Association Purdue s IVSA chapter helps to bring the world to you here at Lynn Hall! We exist to help you expand your knowledge of travel, cultural diversity, and international medicine. You will get the opportunity to meet visitors from all over the world, and take part in our activities such as a Taste the World mini-festival. IVSA hopes to promote the application of your veterinary education and skills all around the globe. 10

Pets for People Our club is for anyone with an interest in the human-animal bond, and volunteering in the community. Lunch lectures in the past have related to animal behavior, service animals, and other human-animal bond topics. Our main fall activity is helping you and your pet work towards becoming a registered therapy animal team through the national organization Pet Partners. Even better, the club pays for your testing and registration fees. Pet Partners currently registers 9 different species, but Pets for People currently has several dog team and one rabbit! Teams regularly volunteer at an assisted living facility in Lafayette to visit with residents, the West Lafayette Public library for a children s reading program, and at various dorms and undergraduate libraries for student stress relief. Teams can visit as many or as few times as they wish. In addition, we hope to increase volunteer opportunities for individuals without a registered pet. 11

Purdue One Health Club As individuals soon joining a health profession, One Health Club recognizes the value of collaboration, education and exploration outside our realm to really make a positive impact on our planet. With this One Health concept in hand, we are seeking to reach out to others at Purdue to collaborate as students and future colleagues, to spark connections, increase awareness, and to have discussions about the issues impacting us and our future. From zoonotic/ emerging diseases, global food crisis, issues facing various professions, to antibiotic resistance, we want to bring in speakers to present different perspectives, have case discussions, and many other ideas are in the works! We will be offering collaboration and connections among various professions represented here at. A particular focus will be placed on those involved in the health of humans, animals, and the environment. We will also be involved in education and awareness in particular having our members explore outside their own major. Development as a professional is important, we will help members learn a systems approach, and how to think about culture, societal beliefs, etc. when forming plans to solve issues. 12

Shelter Medicine Club The Student Chapter of American Shelter Veterinarians (SCASV) exposes students to shelter medicine while allowing them to become involved in the community. In the past we have worked with Almost Home Humane Society in Lafayette during their low cost vaccination and cat neutering events, and have helped perform fecals, heartworm tests, and Feline Leukemia/FIV tests. We continue to find speakers who will educate us about shelter medicine, the challenges shelters face, and how we as future veterinarians can make a difference in our communities. We have a lot of plans for the future, please join us and become a part of this emerging club! 13

Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners The Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (SCAAEP), also referred to as equine club, is very active at PVM and welcoming of equine enthusiasts of all backgrounds, whether you ve been around horses your entire life or have never touched one! The executive board organizes monthly case lectures with clinicians from the LAH and wet labs in both the fall and spring. The fall wet lab provides an opportunity for 1st years to practice physical exams and venipuncture/injections, passing of NG tubes for 2nd years, and abdominocentesis for 3rd years. The spring wet lab is joint injections/nerve blocks. We also host an annual wet lab sponsored by the AAEP this year it will be dentistry. Additionally, other vet schools host large wet labs throughout the year we send 10 members to Texas A&M every January, and CSU hosts one in February. Equine club is also responsible for vaccinating and de-worming the horses at the Purdue farm each semester. There are biweekly rounds in the LAH during which a medicine or surgery resident presents current cases a great way to integrate what you ve been learning in lectures! This is a very hands-on club that strives to provide interesting equine experiences for students at Purdue and is a great way to get to know some of the LA clinicians and residents before your clinical year! 14

Society for Theriogenology The Theriogenology Club is Purdue s student chapter of the Society for Theriogenology. This club focuses on reproduction and contraception in all species that a veterinarian might see. All veterinary tracks can benefit from belonging to this club and attending its meetings and wet labs. If you still need convincing though, the top 10 reasons to join the club are listed below: 10. No other club talks about this much sex 9. This is the only club that covers every species from reptiles to cows. 8. Our club has the best wet labs. 7. Our club has some of the best food. 6. We can have very interesting conversations about donkeys now (and a new found respect). 5. Where else in vet school are you going to see a stallion being collected? 4. You are prepared for any emergency fetotomy you may have to perform if asked. 3. You can spot an embryo a mile away. 2. Two-headed semen causes excitement. The number one reason to join SFT: So you know exactly what is meant by this top ten!!! 15

Student Chapter of the American Association of Feline Practitioners The SCAAFP, which stands for Student Chapter of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, is otherwise known as "Cat Club" at Purdue. It is a club for veterinary students passionate about feline medicine to come together to learn how to cater towards feline patients. Examples of topics covered at meetings include feline cardiology, feline urinary diseases, and feline behavior. Past lectures covered: big cat anesthesia, common feline toxins, common feline parasites, feline respiratory disease, and emergency management of blocked cats. The Feline Club also holds various physical examination and palpation labs throughout the year to help hone our skills on live animals. Some of the fun events outside the vet school include a trip to a local feline exclusive practice and an extended tour of the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. The club also works with Clinton County Humane Society to help them prepare cats for adoption. 16

Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists The Purdue Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (SCACVP), also known as Path Club, provides veterinary students with exciting opportunities to explore veterinary diseases and the changes they cause in animals. Path Club makes pathology relevant to all veterinary students, not just those interested in pathology as a career choice. Throughout the year, chapter meetings highlight the many areas of pathology with guest lecturers, wet-labs, and other educational workshops. These activities allow students to gain experience with various diagnostic techniques, to explore actual clinical and anatomical pathology cases, and to gain a greater understanding of disease pathogenesis. Students have the opportunity to attend bimonthly gross necropsy rounds led by the anatomic pathologists and residents. Club activities also highlight the variety of career paths in veterinary pathology. There are limitless opportunities within the field of veterinary pathology, whether in academia, government, pharmaceutical industry, or as a consultant. The Purdue SCACVP invites speakers from many different backgrounds to provide students valuable information about these unique career opportunities. 17

Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine The Purdue Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SCACVIM) strives to educate veterinary students about the advanced veterinary specialties of small animal internal medicine, large animal internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, and oncology. Regular case rounds and discussions with faculty, labs with hands on exposure to advanced clinical procedures, and workshops on topics such as client communication and clinical problem solving provide veterinary students with a broad range of knowledge and experience beyond the scope of the typical veterinary school curriculum. Topics covered in chapter activities have included; case-based problem solving involving varying disciplines and species, how to prepare for advanced veterinary education, hands on experience with procedures such as echocardiography, round table discussions with faculty, and more. 18

Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society Do you want to learn how to perform CPR on a dog? How about place a tracheotomy tube on a cat? Perhaps you d like the chance to experience the small animal ICU before your third and fourth year? If so, the Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (SVECCS) may be the perfect club for you!. At SVECCS, our mission is to promote the education and involvement of veterinary students in all aspects of emergency and critical care medicine. We are an interactive club geared toward those students interested in the possibility of one day working in emergency medicine! We aim to educate our members about some of the commonly seen emergencies in small (and large) animal practice as well as the differences in the life of an emergency vet. We offer monthly meetings with esteemed speakers as well as other hands-on opportunities. In the past we offered a fall wet lab where members were able learn and practice your CPR skills. We also offered a spring wet lab to practice common small animal emergency skills such as placing chest and tracheotomy tubes, urinary catheterization and much more! If you enjoy small (or large!) animal medicine, have an interest in or wish to learn more about emergency medicine, and want the opportunity to get some hands-on experience, then SVECCS is the club for you! 19

Surgery Club Do you have an interest in surgery? Want to perfect suturing skills? Learn about advanced surgical procedures from clinicians? Yes?! Then come check out Surgery Club! While we re a new and developing club, we have high aspirations for us and our club members. Our mission is to promote the education and involvement of veterinary students in surgery prior to their third year, and to offer information regarding surgical specialization or using surgical skills everyday in a general practice. We have regular meetings to continue developing our suturing skills, where each meeting is either reviewing a suture pattern or introducing a new one. We hold one to two wet labs per semester where students are able learn a new surgical skill, and then practice this alongside a clinician. We make an effort to cater to both small and large animal interests, with wet labs and lectures from both areas. We aim to facilitate our club members interactions with professors of all areas and other leaders in the surgical community through these events, and aiding them in attending programs such as the ACVS Summit. Every other year we plan to offer a fundraiser to those interested to purchase good quality surgical equipment, such as SurgiReal practice pads or hollow organs. If you have interest in learning more about surgery or want to have some hands-on experience with it prior to third year, check out or board next to G167, find us at the club event following Cafe Night, or email either of our Co-Presidents for more information! 20

Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA) Surveys of recent veterinary graduates have shown that once you have finished your veterinary curriculum you will most certainly be ready to examine and diagnose patients. However, these are not the only skills required to be a veterinarian. The VBMA will provide you with preparation for interviews, contract negotiation, paying off debt, client communication and numerous other business-related skills. The VBMA is a very active student club that invites speakers to provide information during lunchtime and evening lectures on these important topics that we will all encounter throughout our careers. The VBMA also works hard to provide networking opportunities and workshops on important job seeking skills such as resume writing and interviewing. This club is not only for those who want to own their own practices. Anyone in the veterinary field, regardless of career track, can benefit from the lessons learned from the VBMA. 21

Veterinary Exotic Animal Club If you love ferrets, bats, parrots, or big cats you belong with us! PVM s Exotic Animal Medicine Club strives to provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and experience to provide excellent veterinary care for our future exotic animal patients. Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment VOICE is a student-run organization that seeks to increase awareness, respect, and sensitivity to differences among all individuals and communities in the field of veterinary medicine. VOICE also aims to celebrate diversity within our profession, to encourage campus environments that embrace diversity and promote the success of all students, and to emphasize the importance of cross-cultural awareness in veterinary medicine in order to meet the needs of our diversifying clientele. Lastly, in order to ensure a more diverse future for veterinary medicine, VOICE chapters provide leadership and mentorship to youth, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, who are interested in careers as veterinarians. Our VOICE Chapter at Purdue strives to meet the goals of our national organization through hosting various events such as a Melting Pot Potluck, serving our community through school or community-wide events, and inviting speakers of various backgrounds to educate and discuss our differences and how they make us stronger. 23

Purdue Veterinary Technology Student Association We are very lucky to be one of the few schools to have a veterinary technology program as part of the vet school. Please see the following from the PVTSA President: Purdue Veterinary Technology Student Association is an organization designed for vet tech students of all grades. We volunteer at the Humane Society and the Columbian Park Zoo in events such as Boo at the Zoo. We also do fundraisers such as bake sales.
