LexiaUK Literacy Programme: Individual Reading and Writing Books: Teacher Notes The 10 books contain a range of reading, spelling and handwriting activities which are designed to complement and extend the skills students learn on the Lexia Reading computer program. Students are able to work through the books independently at their own pace, with help and support from their teacher or teaching assistant when needed. Classroom organisation will be very similar to that required when students are working on the computer program. There are two books to accompany Lexia Early Reading Level 2 and two for each of the first four levels of Lexia Foundation Reading. All the books, except for Early Reading Level 2 Book 1, contain assessment pages (marked with A by the page number) designed to inform teachers of each individual student s progress. Vocabulary lists for Early Reading are in the back of the books. Those for Foundation Reading are attached to this document. Timetabling Practice of the kind provided in the books is best done little and often in order that students develop automatic skills, and retain what they learn. We recommend that students work on the books for a minimum of three 30 minute sessions per week. Students should be discouraged from working for sessions longer than 30 minutes. Introductory Session Students should start on the book which corresponds to the level of the computer program they are working on; Early Reading Book 2.1 if on Early Reading Level 2 (less than 50% through) Early Reading Book 2.2 if on Early Reading Level 2 (more than 50% through) Foundation Reading Book 1.1 if on Foundation Reading Level1 (less than 50% through) Foundation Reading Book 1.2 if on Foundation Reading Level 1 (more than 50% through) The teacher should provide an introduction to the Lexia Reading Reading and Writing Books before students begin to use them. Teachers need to explain to students that each book uses a series of symbols to instruct them what to do on each page. A key to these symbols is at the front of each booklet. 3

Explain to students that once they have completed a booklet, they will receive a certificate of attainment. (Certificates are supplied). Supervision and Support of the Lexia class Good supervision and support has proven to be the most effective means of ensuring rapid student progress with the Lexia Reading software and the same applies to the use of the Reading and Writing Books. The work provided in the books is often more demanding than that provided on the computer programs. As a result, students may often be working on a book which is behind where they are on the computer program. This should not cause any problems. However, if students get ahead of the computer program they may need to use the books less. We recommend that the ratio of supervisor to students is 1 to a maximum of 15. This allows teachers to keep the students focused on their work provide help if a student has a problem For first few sessions, students may need some reminding as to what the symbols on the exercises are asking them to do. They may also need to be reminded to raise their hand to ask for help if they need it. We recommend that students books are marked as they are working in order to give immediate feedback and support where necessary. Recognition of Progress Our research shows that recognition of progress highly motivates students to use Lexia Reading and to achieve more progress. Certificates are to be given to students upon completion of a book, either individually or in a merit assembly. Please note We welcome your feedback on the books at any time. To order additional Reading & Writing Books, please complete the order form attached on the back page. Alternatively, you can download an order form from our website www.lexiauk.co.uk Vocabulary lists: Early Reading Level 2: Books 1 and 2 have a list at the back of each book.
