Task Analysis Pet Adoption Associate Volunteer B.A.R.C. Humane Society Duties Set up and take down of event Animal Care Assisting the public/customers Coordinating adoptions Functions & Tasks 1. Transport animal to adoption event if the animal is in boarding at a veterinarian s office. 1.1. If a BARC animal is in boarding 1.1.1. Travel to Dr. Martins Veterinary Care before the adoption event begins (111 E Northside Drive, Valdosta, GA) 1.1.1.1. Approach the building 1.1.1.2. Enter the vet through the front door 1.1.1.3. Approach the front desk 1.1.1.4. Inform the veterinary worker at the desk you are there to retrieve [insert animal s name+ for the BARC adoption event 1.1.1.5. Wait for the employee to bring the dog to you (animal will be leashed) 1.1.1.6. Thank the employee for their help 1.1.2. Bring the animal to your vehicle 1.1.2.1. Open the passenger or back door (depending on your preference of where the animal is) 1.1.2.2. Stand to the side of the animal 1.1.2.3. Place one arm in front of their front legs and the other under their posterior 1.1.2.4. Lift the animal and assist them in entering the vehicle 1.1.2.5. Once the animal is inside the vehicle, close the door 1.1.2.6. Walk to the driver s door 1.1.2.7. Open the driver s door 1.1.2.8. Enter the vehicle 1.1.2.9. Close the driver s door 1.2. Travel to Petsmart (1700 Norman Drive #200 Valdosta, GA) 1.2.1.1. Upon arrival, turn the car off 1.2.1.2. Open the driver s door 1.2.1.3. Exit the vehicle 1.2.1.4. Close the driver s door 1.2.1.5. Walk to the door the animal is located 1.2.1.6. Open the door where the animal is located

1.2.1.7. Tighten the loop of its leash until it s secured enough to walk the animal without concern, often with one to two inches of space between the animal s neck and the leash depending on its size. 1.2.2. If safe, allow the animal to let itself out of the vehicle 1.2.2.1. If not, pick up the animal, securing one arm in front of its front legs and the other under its posterior. 1.2.2.2. Lift the animal 1.2.2.3. Bring them gently to the ground 1.2.2.4. Remove arms from the animal 1.2.3. Close the door where the animal was located 1.2.4. Lock the car 1.3. Proceed towards Petsmart 1.4. Enter Petsmart 1.5. Proceed to the adoption area 2. Unload, set-up, and take-down kennels of various weights and sizes. 2.1 Walk through the office area of BARC s setup. 2.2 Open the door on the back side of the room to the crate storage area. 2.3 Pick up the crate (Small: 10lbs Medium: 20lbs Large: 30lbs) 2.3.1 Carry the crate at the side so that the longer length is horizontal, facing forward and behind the individual. Always use both hands. 2.4 Carry the crate back out to the adoption area. 2.5 Lay the crate on the ground so that the floor of the crate is touching the floor. 2.6 Unfold the top side of the crate until that side folds over to the ground. 2.7 Unfold the side left over in the direction opposite of the last folding. 2.7.1 Upon doing so, the crate will begin to stand up. 2.8 While holding the now standing part of the crate, lift the back end of the crate that is still folded inside of the crate. 2.9 Lift the backside of the crate up. 2.10 Secure the latches to ensure the wall is standing and stable. 2.11 Lift the front side of the cage which is folded inside. 2.12 Bring the front side of the cage to a standing position. 2.13 Secure the latches to ensure the wall is standing and stable. 2.14 Place hands firmly on each side of the crate. 2.15 Slide the crate to an available opening in the adoption area. 2.15.1 If there are no positions available, it s suggested that one move the smaller crates to the top of the larger ones. 3. Assist foster families with kennel set-up. 3.1 Greet fosters and thank them for coming upon their arrival to Petsmart. 3.2 Offer to aid fosters in bringing in their crates or animal(s). 3.2.1 Upon request to help with their crate, follow the foster outside to their vehicle. 3.2.2 Pick up the crate from the vehicle. 3.2.3 Carry the crate at the side so that the longer length is horizontal, facing forward and behind the individual. Always use both hands.

Unload, set-up, and take-down marketing materials, such as signs and banners. 4.1 For the Petsmart adoption event sign: 4.1.1 When entering Petsmart, take the first isle on the right. 4.1.2 Enter the manager s office, the only door located on the isle. 4.1.2.1 If the door is locked, locate a Petsmart manager.

4.1.2.2 Ask the manager for assistance in regards to unlocking the door. 4.1.3 Locate the triangle-shaped sign (which says Adoption Day at Petsmart! ) 4.1.4 Pick up the sign by the handle on top of it. 4.1.5 Bring the sign outside in front of the entrance. 4.1.6 Place the sign the sign down. 4.1.7 Adjust each side of the sign so that the sign stands securely. 4.1.8 Turn the sign so that the Adoption Day at Petsmart! side is facing the traffic in front of the store. 4.1.9 At the take-down of the event, pick up the sign by its handle. 4.1.10 Carry the sign back to the manager s office. 4.1.11 Leave the manager s office. 4.1.12 Close the office door. 4.2 For the BARC banner: 4.2.1 Enter the storage area, via the back door of the adoption office. 4.2.2 Locate the folded BARC banner located on the counter directly across from the door along with the sticky handles. 4.2.3 Bring them to the first window to the left of the front door of the adoption office. 4.2.4 Place the first of the handles and stick it to the left side of the window, at approximately 3/4ths the height of the window. 4.2.5 Unfold the BARC banner until it lays out straight. 4.2.6 Place the leftmost hole located on the top of the sign through the loop. 4.2.7 Place another hook on the window two feet to the right of the previous one. 4.2.8 Place the second of the three holes through the hook. 4.2.8.1 Move the hook along with the sign attached if the hook is located incorrectly. 4.2.9 Place the third and final hook two feet from the previous one. 4.2.9.1 Move the hook along with the sign attached if the hook is located incorrectly. 4.2.10 At the take-down of the event, remove the sign from each of the hooks. 4.2.11 Fold the sign in half long ways. 4.2.12 Fold the sign in half long ways a second time. 4.2.13 Take the hooks from the window. 4.2.14 Pick up the sign and hooks. 4.2.15 Bring them back to their previous location in the storage area behind the adoption office. 5. Unload, set-up, and take-down the donation table to include humane society t-shirts, pamphlets, and donation canisters. 5.1 Go to the storage area via the back door of the adoption office. 5.2 Locate the BARC table. 5.3 Pick the table up at one s side, with the wider way going vertically. 5.4 Bring the donation table to the right of the bench located in the adoption area. 5.5 Set the table down on its side. 5.6 Unfold each of the table s legs. 5.7 Turn the table so that it is standing on its legs. 5.8 Move the table so it s standing against the wall and its side is against the bench.

5.9 Retrieve the BARC products and t-shirts from the storage containers located in the storage area behind the adoption office. 5.10 Pick up each storage container. 5.11 Carry each container to the donation table. 5.12 Place the BARC products on the left side of the table, keeping each type of product in its own location. 5.13 Place the BARC t-shirts on the right side of the table. 5.13.1 Ensure that shirts are separated according to color. 5.13.2 Ensure that shirts are stacked according to size, with the smallest size being on top and the largest on the bottom. 5.14 Return the storage containers back to the storage area. 5.15 At the conclusion of each event, bring the storage containers back to the table. 5.16 Return the remaining products to the containers in the way they were found at the beginning of the event. 5.17 Carry each of the containers back to the storage area. 5.18 Return to the table. 5.19 Turn the table onto its side. 5.20 Fold each of the table s legs. 5.21 Pick the table up at one s side, with the wider way going vertically. 5.22 Bring the donation table back to the storage area. 6. Feed and walk the animals every 30 minutes during the adoption period. 6.1 Check the animal s water/walking information located on the front of their cage 6.2 If an hour or more has passed since the animal was last walked: 6.2.1 Take a leash from the handle of the adoption office s front door. 6.2.2 Take the handled end of the leash and bring it through the round metal circle on the opposite end of the leash to create a loop. 6.2.3 Return to the cage, and move the door s latch upwards. 6.2.4 Move the latch to the left to open the cage. 6.2.5 Place the leash s loop around the animal s neck. 6.2.6 Tighten the loop until it s secured enough to walk the animal without concern, often with one to two inches of space between the animal s neck and the leash depending on its size. 6.2.7 Walk with the animal, making sure to walk at a comfortable pace with it. 6.2.8 Take the animal outside to one of the grassed areas outside, up and down the sidewalk (depending on the temperature; hot sidewalk can burn paws), or around the store for 5-10 minutes. 6.2.9 Return with the animal to the crate. 6.2.10 Help the animal inside the crate. 6.2.11 Loosen the animal s leash. 6.2.12 Remove the leash. 6.2.13 Close the crate s door. 6.2.14 Move the door s latch to the right. 6.2.15 Move the latch down to secure the door shut. 6.2.16 Return the animal s leash to the handle of the adoption office s front door.

6.3 At one hour into the event (2PM) and three hours into the event (4PM), giving the animals water. 6.3.1 Go to the storage area located behind the adoption office. 6.3.2 Locate the bowls, found in a plastic bag just to the right of the door. 6.3.3 Remove the bowls from the bag and bring each of them to the sink in the adoption room. 6.3.4 Fill each bowl between 1/4th and ½ full of water. 6.3.5 Bring every crate a bowl. 6.3.6 For each crate, pull the door s latch up. 6.3.7 Move the door s latch to the left to open the door. 6.3.8 Open the door as narrowly as possible for the bowl to enter. 6.3.9 Take the bowl in your one s hand. 6.3.10 Place the bowl in the front left corner inside of the crate. 6.3.11 Close the crate s door. 6.3.12 Move the door s latch to the right. 6.3.13 Move the latch down to securely close the crate. 6.4 When 3PM arrives: 6.4.1 Approach each crate. 6.4.2 Take the crate s latch and move it upwards. 6.4.3 Move the latch to the left afterwards to open the door. 6.4.4 Open the crate s door narrowly. 6.4.5 Reach hand into the crate. 6.4.6 Take the bowl. 6.4.7 Remove hand and bowl from the crate. 6.4.8 Close the crate s door. 6.4.9 Move the door s latch to the right. 6.4.10 Afterwards move the latch downwards to securely close the crate. 6.4.11 Bring the bowl to the sink located in the adoption office. 6.4.12 Place hand on the right sink handle. 6.4.13 Turn the handle to the left for 2 seconds to release cool water. 6.4.14 Use the water to wash out anything inside the bowl. 6.4.15 Afterwards, let the bowl fill between 1/4th and ½ full. 6.4.16 Turn the sink s handle to the right until the release of water ceases. 6.4.17 Return to the crate that the bowl was previously located. 6.4.18 Take the crate s latch. 6.4.19 Move the latch upwards. 6.4.20 Afterwards, move the latch to the left to open the door. 6.4.21 Open the door just enough for the bowl to go through. 6.4.22 Set the bowl down in the front left corner of the crate. 6.4.23 Remove hand from crate. 6.4.24 Close the crate door. 6.4.25 Move the door s latch to the right. 6.4.26 Afterwards, move the latch downwards to securely shut the door.

7. Collect and record animal information (i.e. name, breed, age, gender, personality traits, etc.) for kennel badges. 7.1 Go to the storage room located behind the adoption office. 7.2 Locate the stack of paper boxes found on the counter directly across from the entrance of the storage area. 7.3 Identify the box labeled kennel badges. 7.4 Retrieve the yellow kennel badges located inside the box. 7.5 Place the badges onto the adoption table located inside the adoption office for those who arrive later. 7.6 Locate the bin in the adoption room labeled Adoptables. 7.7 Open each of the animals who are presents files to seek information on their age, breed, and possible medical conditions. 7.8 Write down the information onto the kennel badges. 7.9 Check in with each foster who is present with their animal s badge to seek personality traits of the animal. 7.10 Write down the animal s characteristics given by the foster. 7.11 Locate the animal s crate. 7.12 Place the kennel badge on top of the animal s crate. 8. Respond to questions from patrons, and provide information about animals, such as behavior, habitat, breeding habits, or facility activities. 8.1 Respond to customers in a friendly manner and with a smile. 8.2 If the answer to a question is unknown, seek the animal s foster if they are present. 8.3 If the question is unknown and the foster is not present, ask other volunteers for information. 8.4 If the information is unknown, the foster is not present, and the other volunteers are also unaware of the answer, attempt calling the foster. 8.4.1 If the foster is unavailable, return to the adoption office. 8.4.2 Open the bin labeled Files on the counter. 8.4.3 Retrieve a contact information card. 8.4.4 Retrieve a pen or pencil. 8.4.5 Write down the foster s contact information. 8.4.6 Return to the customer. 8.4.7 Give the customer a contact card and apologize for the inconvenience. 9. Monitor animal behavior and intervene when animals need to be separated from one another due to conflict. 9.1 Monitor the animals for a possible conflict. 9.1.1 Glancing occasionally from one animal to another. 9.1.2 If two animals appear to be barking at each other or if one animal is barking and another animal looks scared, they need to be separated. 9.2 Separate the animals. 9.2.1 Retrieve a towel from the BARC office. 9.2.2 Place it in between the two crates. 9.2.2.1 Tuck the top of the towel into the top of the crate.

9.2.2.2 Pull the towel down so that the animals in the crate cannot see each other. 9.3 If this does not reduce the conflict, the crates need to be physically moved. 9.4 Remove one of the animals from their crate. 9.4.1 Retrieve a temporary leash from the door knob of the BARC office door. 9.4.2 Open the door of the crate. 9.4.2.1 Pull down the latch on the crate door and then pull it to the left. 9.4.3 Place the leash around the neck of the animal and secure it. 9.4.4 Lead the animal out of the crate. 9.4.5 Hand the leash to another volunteer while you move the crate. 9.5 Move the empty crate. 9.5.1 Bend at the knees. 9.5.2 Place arms around the crate. 9.5.3 Lift the crate. 9.5.4 Set down at the new location where it will be away from the other animal in conflict. 9.6 Replace the animal back into the crate. 9.6.1 Retrieve the animal from the volunteer who is holding it. 9.6.2 Take the leash off of the animal. 9.6.3 Place the animal back in the crate. 9.6.4 Lock the door of the crate. 9.6.4.1 Pull the crate door latch to the right and then down. 9.6.4.2 Pull on the door to make sure that the door is locked. 9.7 Replace the leash. 9.7.1 Place the leash back on the doorknob of the BARC office door. 10. If an animal has allergies, ensure that the customers do not feed the animal. 10.1. Enter the adoption office 10.1.1. Locate the bin titled Files. 10.1.2. Retrieve a blank file card 10.1.3. Retrieve a marker from the adoption desk 10.1.4. Write *Insert animal s name+ has severe allergies. Please do not feed. 10.1.5. Place the marker back on the adoption desk 10.2. Walk to the animal s crate 10.2.1. Place the file card on top of the animal s crate 11. Provide animals with toys and snacks inside the kennel. 11.1 Open kennel door. 11.1.1 Pull door latch up and to the left. 11.2 Give animal appropriate size toy or appropriate amount and size of treat. 11.2.1Open kennel door. 11.2.2 Pull door latch up and to the left. 11.3 Close kennel door. 11.3.1 Pull door latch to the right and down. 11.3.2 Pull on door to make sure the door is locked. 12. Open kennels upon patron request.

12.1 When approached by a Petsmart customer about seeing an animal, smile and agree to let them see the animal (Unless told otherwise about letting the animal out). 12.2 Acquire a leash from the handle of the front door of the adoption office. 12.3 Return the animal s crate. 12.4 Take the latch of the crate s door. 12.5 Move the latch upwards. 12.6 Afterwards, move the latch to the left to open the door. 12.7 Kneel down to prevent the animal from getting out without a leash. 12.8 Take the handled end of the leash and pull it through the metal circle of the leash to form a loop. 12.9 Put the loop around the animal s neck. 12.10 Tighten the loop until there s only 1-2 inches left open to provide the animal comfort, the amount of space will vary with the animal s size. 12.11 Once the leash is safely on the animal, hand the leash over the customer. 12.12 Offer to go with them and take the animal to the corner of the store or out front for privacy. 12.12.1 If so, follow the customer and animal to the designated area and watch over the interaction. 12.13 If customers are over the age of 18, inform customers that they are able to walk the animal around the store or out front and that they can spend as much time with the animal as they please. 12.14 If the customer does not wish to adopt return the animal to its crate. 12.15 Upon reaching the crate, take the latch to the crate s door. 12.15.1 Move the latch upwards. 12.15.2 Afterwards, move the latch to the left to open the door. 12.15.3 Aid the animal in getting into the crate. 12.15.4 Loosen the animal s leash. 12.15.5 Remove the leash from the animal. 12.15.6 Afterwards, close the crate s door. 12.15.7 Move the door s latch to the right. 12.15.8 Move the door s latch downwards to securely close the door. 12.15.9 If a customer wishes to adopt return the animal to its crate to begin the adoption process. 12.15.10 Upon reaching the crate, take the latch to the crate s door. 12.15.11 Move the latch upwards. 12.15.12 Afterwards, move the latch to the left to open the door. 12.15.13 Aid the animal in getting into the crate. 12.15.14 Loosen the animal s leash. 12.15.15 Remove the leash from the animal. 12.15.16 Afterwards, close the crate s door. 12.15.17 Move the door s latch to the right. 12.15.18 Move the door s latch downwards to securely close the door. 12.15.19 Lead the customer to the adoption office. 12.15.20 Begin the adoption process detailed below.

13. Clean up animal feces or urine if the animal defecates in the kennel. 13.1 Examine all crates for any urination or defecation. 13.2 When urination or defecation has occurred, retrieve the temporary lease. 13.2.1 This will be hanging on the doorknob of the BARC office door. 13.3 Remove the animal from the crate. 13.3.1 Place the leash around the neck of the animal and secure. 13.3.2 Lead the animal out of the crate. 13.3.3 Hand the leash to another volunteer while you clean out the crate. 13.4 If necessary, remove the training pad from the crate if it has been soiled. 13.4.1 Throw the soiled pad into the garbage. 13.5 Get the necessary materials to clean out the crate. 13.5.1 Go to the OOPS station to retrieve paper towels and cleaning spray. 13.6 Use the paper towels to pick up any feces or to wipe out any urine. 13.7 Spray the crate down with the cleaning spray. 13.8 Use paper towels to wipe down the crate with the cleaning spray until the crate is clean and all cleaning spray in the carte has been dried up. 13.9 Replace the animal back into the clean crate. 13.9.1. Retrieve the animal from the volunteer who has been tending to it. 13.9.2. Take the leash off of the animal. 13.9.3. Place the animal into the crate. 13.10 Lock the animal into the crate. 13.10.1. Close the door to the crate. 13.10.2. Pull the door latch to the right and then down. 13.10.3 Pull on the crate door to make sure that the door is locked. 13.11 Replace the leash back to the doorknob. 13.11.1 Place it back over the doorknob of the BARC office door. 14. Clean the crates at the end of an event with cleaning spray and dry with paper towels. 14.1 Make sure that all animals have been taken out of the crates. 14.1.1 Look inside each crate to see that there are no animals in any of the crates 14.2 Open the crate and remove any items in the crate 14.2.1 Pull the latch of the door up and then to the left 14.2.2 Remove any towels, blankets, toys, training pads, etc., from the crate. 14.3 Retrieve the necessary materials to clean out the crate 15.3.1 Retrieve paper towels and cleaning spray from the OOPS station. 14.4 Use the paper towels to pick up any feces or to wipe out any urine. 14.4.1 After paper towel has been soiled, put it in the garbage. 14.5 Spray the crate down with the cleaning spray 14.6 Use paper towels to wipe down the crate with the cleaning spray until the crate is clean and all cleaning spray in the carte has been dried up. 14.7 Close the crate door and lock it. 14.7.1 Pull the door to the crate to the right and then down 15. Accurately complete new adoption paperwork. 15.1 When informed that someone wishes to adopt, locate the customer.

15.2 Introduce yourself as an adoption coordinator and thank them for their interest to adopt. 15.3 Lead the customer to the adoption office. 15.4 Get the animal s file from the foster from the bin on the counter labeled as adoptables. 15.5 Close the adoptables bin. 15.6 Open the bin labeled files. 15.7 Remove an adoption sheet and a Petsmart adoption file. 15.8 Close the files bin. 15.9 Bring the paperwork back to the table in the office. 15.10 Invite the customer to have a seat at the table. 15.11 Sit down at the table. 15.12 Explain the meaning and importance behind each of the pieces of paper to the customer. 15.13 Give the customer the adoption sheet and allow them to complete the information. 15.14 Sign name at the end of their adoption sheet as the BARC representative. 15.15 Ask the customer how they wish to pay the adoption fee ($100 for cats, $150 for dogs. BARC doesn t take credit). 15.16 The adoption process will be paused until the money or check is given from the customer. 15.17 Complete the representative information located at the bottom of the Petsmart adoption form. 15.18 Place an X near where the customer will need to initial. 15.19 Explain to the customer to fill out the remaining information, and to initial where the X s are located. 15.20 State to the customer that the initialing is a guarantee that BARC will be contacted if issues arise or if assistance is needed and not Petsmart, and that this adoption was done through BARC and not PETSMART. 15.21 Lastly, give the customer the intake/outtake form. 15.22 Explain to the customer to complete all of the information in the outtake portion of the form. 15.23 Upon completion, ensure that the customer gave their signature at the bottom of the outtake portion. 15.24 Once the paperwork is complete, thank the customer again for adopting through BARC and saving the life of another animal. 15.25 Give the customer the copies of the animal s vetting records. 15.26 Inform the customer you will now take them through the register to complete the Petsmart adoption form and so they can receive their free coupon book for adopting. 15.27 Take the Petsmart form to the register with the customer. 15.28 Inform the Petsmart employee there was a pet adoption. 15.29 Once the transaction is complete, once again thank the customer and tell them their dog is now ready to be taken to their new home. 16. Make copies of adoption forms when necessary.

16.1 Audit the adoption forms on occasion to make sure there are adequate copies in the office. 16.1.2 Enter the office and count the forms available. 16.2 If less than five copies available, walk to neighboring office supply store to make copies. 16.3 Utilize the self-service copy machines located inside the office supply store. 16.4 Pay for your copies at the checkout or print station counters. 16.5 Return to Pet Smart with copies in hand. 17. Post pictures during the adoption event and post them to the Facebook page. 17.1 Take pictures of the animals, BARC volunteers, and/or new adoption families with a mobile device, tablet, or digital camera. 17.2 Post the pictures to the BARC Facebook page. 17.2.1 Log-in to your Facebook account from the device you used to take the photos or from a PC. 17.2.1.2 Enter your username and password before selecting Log In. 17.2.2 Visit the BARC Facebook page. 17.2.3 Select the Upload Photo / Video tab. 17.2.4 Select the photo you would like to use from your existing camera roll within your device. 17.2.4.1 If a digital camera was used to take pictures, download the pictures onto your PC. 17.2.4.2 After selecting the Upload Photo / Video tab, choose the browse option and select the picture(s) you would like to post. 17.2.5 Once your picture is selected, add a text caption and press the blue Post tab. 17.3 Repeat the process to post multiple pictures to the BARC Facebook page. 18. Update the BARC Facebook page after an adoption. 18.1 Log-in to your Facebook account using your mobile device, tablet, or PC. 19.1.2 Enter your username or password before selecting Log-In. 18.2 Visit the BARC Facebook page. 18.3 Update BARC status 19.3.1 Select the status box. 19.3.2 Type in your announcement about the new adoption. 19.3.3 Add a picture to the post if applicable.
