More than just a market MARKET NEWS FOR TUESDAY 14 TH FEBRUARY Manager s Mutterings 400 head of cattle and 2,300 head of sheep in today s auction, with many farmers in attendance looking to buy. Overnight our lairage was full of cattle, so we were expecting a fairly busy day. To organise lairage please contact me to book a pen. Prime cattle today were some of the best meated cattle for some time which was just what the packed ringside of buyers wanted to see. Butcher s heifers are still needed to fill the orders of our many local customers in attendance. Ben Shouler s trade in the store cattle showed no sign of dropping, with all types of cattle selling well. Reared calves topped at 1,040 for Milners of Markfield, they have 19 more booked in for next week. In the strong stores Ben s brother, Chris Shouler topped proceedings with a bunch of two year old named sire Aberdeen Angus at 1,285. Please note we are now taking entries for our 1st Spring Store Cattle catalogued sale on the 7th March. Please contact either myself, Ben Shouler or John Powell for details. Tom reports an improved entry of fat hoggets with trade remaining about the same. Plenty of speculation about the effect of foreign imports of sheep meat holding trade back, it certainly can t be helping and with trade at fairly steady levels and plenty of supply it would be nice to see better support from some of the larger processors and retailers for British meat.
