Rural Reflection December 2017 High pressure continues to dominate the country bringing with it cold, but dry weather, very much needed if you are currently busy in the lambing pens. That said, the forecast is suggesting northerly winds for the weekend, could snow be a feature for December? Commodity prices seem to be holding their own, with both barley and wheat prices remaining strong. Straw prices seem to be one of the main talking points, providing positive vibes for the arable farmers, yet a little more frustrating for the livestock farmers amongst you having to use the stuff. Onto Basic Payment Scheme matters and some good news for a change. As returning from work on Friday the 1 st of December I was pleasantly informed that the home farm had received the annual Basic Payment Scheme income and furthermore throughout the weekend it was clear that many clients had also received the required payment. If you haven t received anything yet, don t panic, it is understood the RPA are aiming to make payments to at least 90% of BPS claimants (around 77,400) by the 31 st of December. With regards to the size of the payment there is further good news here too. It is understood payments for the 2017 claim year should be just under 5% higher than the 2016 claim period due to a more beneficial conversion rate from the Euro to the Pound. An increase that will be a welcome boost to farmers across the country. Here at Exeter we are busy submitting full and final claims against one large utility company for clients that have been affected by works on the electrical pylons leading from Plymouth to Exeter. It s worth mentioning that if you experience any damage or losses as a result of any utility company entering your land to undertake improvements or repairs to apparatus you are entitled to claim for the losses you have incurred. Throughout autumn, the professional team at Kivells have been busy receiving instructions on various sales of land, buildings and residential property. We have seen our Exeter office build from strength to strength, being favoured on a number of instructions including property that is

located down in the heart of the South Hams to property located at Bow, right in the centre of Mid Devon. The professional team here at Kivells have a fantastic connection with the rural community through our network of offices and livestock markets. Our team of agents have the knowledge and ability to maximise the sale price of your property. If you are considering selling during 2018 please do not hesitate to give us a call. To finish, the Professional Team here at Kivells have been busy throughout 2017 with all types of wok whether it be Property sales, Valuations, Tenancy matters, Planning or completing BPS and Countryside Stewardship applications, the list is endless. We thank you for your continued custom and we look forward to serving the South West rural community throughout 2018.
