CONSIDERING HOMEMADE DOG FOOD... -2- Today's (4/10) newspaper reported that as many as 39,000 pets may have been sickened or killed in the United States as a result of the melamine contaminated wheat gluten in their food. This is quite shocking. Menu Foods continues to make updates to their information, and it is recommended that we check their website for the latest. As a result of the food recall and surrounding publicity, people are becoming concerned about feeding their animals a commercially prepared diet, and reportedly more and more are considering homemade food for their pets. For anyone considering the BARF (Bones and Raw Food) type diet, I found an interesting website: www.auntjeni.com/barf.htm. I have not tried the BARF diet so cannot personally comment one way or the other, but in light of the current scare, I thought I'd pass the information on. I also went to the AVMA website in an effort to find dietary information from a qualified source, which in turn took me to www.petdiets.com. However, the cost for homemade diet recipes was $50, so I did not pursue. There are many website postings offering homemade dog food recipes, and while many sounded great, I was unable to find one that I felt could be guaranteed to be nutritionally balanced and complete. If anyone knows of a good resource, please share it with us. CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY BILL 1634 If you have not yet done so, please take the time to voice your opposition to this discriminatory and restrictive proposed legislation which would require sterilization of all dogs (and cats) over the age of four months. The California Assembly Business and Professions Committee will be further discussing the bill at its meeting on April 24, during which a vote will be taken. Check the AKC website for latest news and updates on this and other legislative issues: www.akc.org/canine_legislation. PHOTOS NEEDED! PLEASE SEND PICTURES OF YOUR DOGS. OF COURSE, WE WANT THOSE SPECTACULAR BIS AND HIT PICS, BUT THOSE CANDID SHOTS ARE JUST AS INTERESTING AND USUALLY MORE AMUSING OR HEARTWARMING. ANY AND ALL PHOTOGRAPHS ARE WELCOME.

Attendees: All the above plus Danielle Reed, Pam Arneson, Debbie Hopkins, Kris Smith, Bayard Smith, Shirley Groom, Rose Kessler, Jim Wasetis, and Diane Silva. Minutes of Last Meeting: Approved MSAC Report of President: Discussion held on Dog Laws and Ordinances. Report of Secretary: A letter from Santa Cruz KC was read that stated they will try to change their show date so we can keep ours. They did apologize as they never checked to see who else had that date. A letter from AKC was discussed about clubs buying their own microchip implanters and scanners. It was decided not to purchase one. Alice Symons sent a letter officially resigning as Show Chair, LCKC President, and LCKC member. Report of Treasurer: Patty Mendes absent. No report. New Member Applications: None Report of Committees? Ring practice: Total of $141 earned since last meeting. The latest practice was cancelled due to the Foggy Bottom Run in Ferndale. Rose Kessler said she will check with the fairgrounds before scheduling practices in the future. Jill Otto called Redwood Acres about the covered arena for practices. The cost is $20/hour and the consensus was that it wouldn t be cost efficient.? 2007 Conformation/Obedience Show: The show is in order. Parking help and EMT have been arranged. 4-H will help with general show stuff with Pam Arneson supervising them. The LCKC will make a $200 donation to the 4-H group for the weekend. The Exchange Club has committed to doing the Friday night dinner. The 4-H group may do a Saturday night dinner. Debbie Hopkins has the flyers ready. Chris Irvin will contact Cathy Wright about mailing 150 flyers to the Cooks. Debbie Hopkins will mail 50 flyers to Nick Mendes per his request. Deb Enns will man the Raffle table. The judges hospitality forms have been all sent out. Chris Irvin has venders committed and would like to know of more local venders that might like to sell there. Please let her know if you think of any. The deadline for venders is May 30 th. It was again mentioned that LCKC members and nonprofits get to set up tables at no cost. A discussion was held on whether there could be any type of special rides for the BIS judges to ringside. Any ideas from members are appreciated. Chris Irvin is doing all the trophies and they are all in order. Shirley Groom will be doing the towels and embroidery for trophies. Shirley Groom offered to donate the towels and embroidery work to the LCKC. Towel sizes were discussed. Bigger towels for Group trophies and smaller towels for Breed prizes were decided upon. Shirley Groom will look into them and discuss it with Chris Irvin. The BIS/HIT chairs are being bought by Anita Gage, from Creative Treasures, one of our venders, at a dog show. Creative Treasure has given the LCKC a great deal on the price. Discussion held on what type of logo will go on the chairs. Discussion held on trophy frames.

-5-? 2007 Agility Trial: The judges' rooms are reserved by Deb Enns at the Best Western at Bayshore Mall, as that was their preference. Beverly Morgan Lewis needs $150 to send in with the contract for renting the fairgrounds for the agility trial ASAP. All is moving smoothly along. The 4-H group will help out at the Agility Trial also. Newsletter: Please send Barb Stelz anything interesting you have for the newsletter. She welcomes all contributions. She was complimented on the wonderful job she is doing with the newsletter. Jim Wasetis has been converting the newsletter to a PDF file. Unfinished Business: Apparel order update. MSAC for Michelle Dostal to order 6 green worker T-shirts, 2 med, 2 Lg, & 2 XL and 4 Grey ones in whatever sizes are needed. New Business: The new membership list is pending on an updated list of paid up members. Michelle Dostal will get it out as soon as she gets this information. MSAC to keep our show date as it is. Irene Hetrick will start contacting judges for 2008. Shirley Groom introduced her adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, Puccini. He was extremely well behaved throughout the whole meeting and very, very cute. Adjournment: 8:30 pm LCKC Logo Apparel Order... Wear your club logo with pride!!! LAST CHANCE! If you've been thinking about ordering some logo items but have been putting it off, DO IT NOW! Club members can provide their own garments OR order jackets, shirts, vests, etc., from Sport and Cycle in Eureka. The logo is available either embroidered or silk screened onto the garments. The embroidery is approximately 4"x4" (Note: It is too large for a baseball cap), so it works best in the breast pocket area of a garment. Silk screening is also available (like on the club volunteer shirts). To do a silkscreen order, though, we will need a minimum of 10 items. No minimum order for the embroidery. The cost of the embroidered logo is $13.50, and the silk screen logo is $3.70 per garment. If you provide your own garment, you will be charged for the cost of the logo only. You can buy or order garments from Sport and Cycle. Last time we did a special order, we got a discount from Sport and Cycle on garments ordered through their catalog. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you place your order through me and not directly with Sport and Cycle to get the discounted garment and logo prices. You can obtain the catalog number, color, and size information from Sport and Cycle, but your selection information must then be given to me, as I need to place the club order all at one time. For more information, or if you have questions, please contact Michelle Dostal at 442-0726 or mjdostal@humboldt1.com
