Chapter 1 A Dog in the Road Earl is a travelling salesman in the USA. He travels around the country and sells things from his van. One Monday evening, Earl is driving through Kentucky. It s dark and he looks for a place to park for the night. Something is standing in the narrow road, but he can t see it clearly. It looks at him with its dark eyes. They re shining in the lights of his van. It s a big black dog, but it looks like a wolf. Earl stops the van. The dog stands in the road and watches him. Earl beeps his horn, but the dog doesn t move. Hey! Earl shouts out of the window. Move! Stupid dog! But the dog doesn t react. That s strange, thinks Earl. The dog starts to walk in the middle of the road. Earl can t pass it, so he drives his van slowly behind the dog. At the side of the road, Earl sees a perfect grassy area to stop for the night. He parks the van and the dog stops walking. It sits near him in the grass. It watches Earl all the time. What does it want? Earl makes a fire and cooks some food. He calls the dog to come and eat, but it doesn t come. 38 39

Chapter 2 The Hill The moon appears in the sky, and the dog stands up. It looks at Earl, walks a little down the road, then stops and looks at him again. It s trying to tell me something, but what? thinks Earl. I m going to follow it and see. Earl puts his things in the van and locks it. Then, he follows the dog down the road. They come to a hill. The dog looks at Earl again, then jumps into the side of the hill and disappears! The next morning, Earl drives his van and arrives at a new town. All the men in the town work in the coal mines. Many people come to buy his things, so Earl is happy. Earl is surprised. Where did it go? he thinks. He looks at the side of the hill but can t see anything. Finally, he returns to the van and prepares to go to sleep. But he doesn t sleep well that night. Late in the evening, Earl leaves the town and returns to the same place to sleep. Suddenly, the black dog appears again in the middle of the road. It walks a few steps and then turns to look at Earl. Again, he follows the dog to the same hill. It turns, looks at Earl, and then jumps into the side of the hill and disappears. Now, Earl is frightened. Where does the dog go? he thinks. And why does it bring me to this place? It wants something from me but what? 40 41

Chapter 3 The Accident Earl returns to the grassy place and stays there for the night. I must leave tomorrow. I don t want to return here, he thinks. That dog is really strange. On Wednesday morning, he arrives at another town. This town has also got coal mines. Something is happening. A lot of people are outside and they re very sad. They re wearing black clothes. What happened? asks Earl. Those poor people, thinks Earl. How terrible for the families! This town is mourning the miners today. I must leave. Earl drives slowly past some houses. Sad women in black dresses are sitting outside. They re holding pictures of their husbands and sons from the mine. Suddenly, Earl sees something interesting. A woman is holding a picture of a coal miner. He s got a hat with a lamp on his head. There s a big black dog, like a wolf, next to the man. It s the black dog from the road. Earl can t believe it! Why is everybody sad? Two days ago, there was an accident in one of the coal mines and many miners died, a woman tells him. The last funeral is today. But one man is still missing. His name is Jack and he s our friend. 44 45

Earl drives out of the town. Suddenly, he sees the dog at the side of the hill. Again, it turns and disappears. Earl returns to the town immediately. He finds the woman with the photograph. She s sitting with some miners and their wives. Chapter 4 The Devil s Mouth Earl tells the people about the black dog and its strange disappearance into the hill. Jack s wife holds the picture and tries not to cry. Maybe it is Shuck and he s disappearing into the Devil s Mouth, an old man says. He s got coal dust on his face. I must talk to you, Earl says. It s about that dog in the picture. Shuck? What do you know about him? Every time I drive in this area, I see him, says Earl. He s strange. He wants something from me, but I don t know what. The people are silent and look at Earl curiously. It can t be Shuck, answers the woman. He s lost in the mine with my husband. Is your husband Jack, the missing miner? asks Earl. Yes. Shuck is missing too, the woman explains. He goes in the mine with Jack every day. He usually protects him but not this The Devil s Mouth? What s that? It s the name of an old mine, the old man replies. The mining company closed it years ago. There was a tunnel between the Devil s Mouth and the other mines. But nobody uses it now. Maybe Shuck is showing you a way into the mine. He can take us to Jack! said Jack s wife. Let s go there immediately! time. 46 47

The men go with Earl to the hill at the Devil s Mouth. We ve got work to do, another miner says. Shuck is showing us a way to Jack. Alive or dead, we must find him. The men have got hard hats, lamps and equipment for digging. They start to dig into the side of the hill to open the old mine. Finally, one of the men shouts, We did it! We re through to the mine! The men shout to the lost miner but they don t hear anything. One man goes inside. After five minutes, he appears again. Jack s alive! he shouts. He s weak, but he s breathing. Unfortunately, poor old Shuck is dead. The miners go inside to help Jack. Shuck s body is near him. They carry Jack out of the mine. He s very tired and hungry, but he s happy to be alive. Then, Jack tells his story. The roof started to fall and Shuck and I escaped along an old tunnel, he says. Some wood fell on Shuck and killed him immediately. He died two days ago, but his presence helped me in the dark. He was a good dog. Shuck was a good dog. Even after he died, he didn t leave his master. His ghost waited on the road for help, and finally, he saved his master s life. 48 49
