STRAY CAT BLUES, INC. Stray Cat Mews The Newsletter of SUMMER 2009 Bidding for the Blues Silent Auction Benefits our Community TNR Program On September 16, 2009, we are holding our Bidding for the Blues Silent Auction at the Pinecrest Country Club, Lansdale, 6-9 p.m., $20 at the door or in advance. The proceeds from this auction will be used exclusively to benefit our Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program. You may not know it, but there are stray/feral cats struggling to survive in your neighborhood. The problem affects us all. It is a problem of neglect and apathy a situation brought about by a lack of respect for life and the misunderstanding of the responsibility of pet ownership. Even those non- cat-lovers among us recognize the importance of addressing the problem of cat overpopulation and neglect. What is Trap-Neuter-Return? The plight of feral cats has captured the hearts of animal lovers for many years, but only recently has a non-lethal option for their care become available. Called a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, this humane alternative involves spaying and neutering feral cats, then returning them to their colonies where they are looked after and fed by caretakers. This solution successfully decreases the population, reduces birth rates, and improves the overall health of the colony. SCBI volunteer trappers respond to many calls and emails from the public for TNR help. We spay and neuter over 1,000 cats a year. Proceeds from the Silent Auction will help us continue this vital work in Montgomery and Bucks counties and other surrounding communities. Our last silent auction contributed over $25,000 to this program and we hope this auction will raise even more urgently needed funds. How can you help? We encourage you to donate an item or a sponsorship for this event. Forms for both are attached for your convenience. Your decision to help will count significantly towards our struggle to curtail the ongoing cycle of cat homelessness and suffering in our own backyards. Your gift will help Stray Cat Blues, Inc. help your community. Please complete either of the enclosed forms and return to,,. Thank you for support of this request. We, and especially the cats, need your help! Also plan to attend the Silent Auction. Bring your family and friends and any animal lovers you know! Searching for a Shelter Location It s time that had a physical shelter to house our kitties. Since our inception, we have and still do depend exclusively on our foster care network. We also have two active adoption locations at PetsMart, North Wales, and PSP, Souderton. While we won t be changing either of these successful components of our rescue, we feel it s time for us to have a central location where we can house our cats, gather as a group, hold spay/neuter clinics, and fundraisers. Of course, our budget is limited so we re asking our readers to keep an eye out for a reasonable property in the eastern Montgomery County area with the proper zoning that could serve as our first shelter. We are willing to do a lease to purchase. OR and this is where dreaming comes in handy -- is there someone you know who has a property they wish to donate to us? Since we are a 501 c 3 charity the donation would be tax exempt. It doesn t hurt to put it out there so if you know of any property that might suit our needs, please contact us at savingstrays@yahoo.com or call us at 215 361 1851 and leave a message for Linda P. Residents of the retirement community at Gwynedd Estates, Ambler, cuddle with wee kittens brought by SCBI volunteers for a special presentation. An ongoing trap, neuter, return (TNR) program is taking place at Gwynedd Estates that is being funded by the residents. SCBI foster volunteer, Liz Birkhead, explains to the residents of Gwynedd Estates, how she bottle feeds the baby kittens. Ph: 215.631.1851 www.straycatblues.org savingstrays@yahoo.com

SUMMER 2009, Pg 2 Fostering: A Commitment of Heart and Home Stray Cat Blues, Inc, is a foster home network.since we don t have a shelter of our own (yet), we must rely on a small, dedicated and tremendously generous group of people who open their hearts and homes to over 300 stray cats and kittens every year. Stray Cat Blues, Inc. would not be as effective as it is without the loyalty and commitment of our foster homes. We need more committed foster homes and welcome newcomers. Our need is particularly urgent during the warmer months when there are so many pregnant females, friendly strays or orphaned kittens that need care. People call or email us every day begging us to take in the strays they see on the streets. We can t help everyone but the more qualified foster homes we have, the more we can respond to the needs our communities. We offer training and mentoring for new foster volunteers who we hope will grow to love this area of rescue work and commit to helping long-term. It takes a special kind of person or family to be a foster home. If you ve ever considered fostering, here are few points you need to consider: 1. You must be able and willing to commit time and energy to the art of fostering cats and kittens. The foster kitties need living space in your home, trips to our participating vets or tech team volunteers for their necessary vet care, daily food and water, clean litter boxes, and love and attention especially the shy ones. 2. You must be committed to getting the cats and kittens adopted. That requires active and ongoing weekend participation at our various adoption outlets such as PetsMart, North Wales and Pets Supplies Plus, Souderton. It means giving up some Saturdays and Sundays to bring the foster cats to these locations to be seen and, hopefully, adopted. 3. You must also be able to let go. Often foster kitties endear themselves to us which makes it very difficult in some cases to say good-bye when they are adopted into their permanent homes. Committed foster homes realize that the more they let go, the more stray cats and kittens they can help. Fostering stray cats and kittens is extremely fulfilling because it s a very tangible and appreciated commitment to the cats and to Stray Cat Blues, Inc. If you d like to give it a try, email savingstrays@yahoo.com, attention Stephanie, our Foster Coordinator. Do We Have Barn Cats for You! Our barn cat program is the best around. Our kitties are totally vetted, groomed, delivered and oriented to your property for FREE. The kitties in this program cannot be socialized as house pets but are ablebodied organic rodent control officers of the highest caliber. Our barn cat coordinator takes very good care of them until they can find their forever homes. With rural properties quickly disappearing due to development it s getting harder to find placement for our wonderful barn kitties. So we ve expanded our search to include arboreta, nurseries, garden centers, warehouses, feed stores anywhere there is concern over rodent populations. Temple University Ambler s Landscape Arboretum recently adopted two barnies Henree and Sakee.these kitties work their magic for moles and other rodents that ruin the gardens. We are thrilled to have them here and consider them part of the staff, says Grace Chapman, Horticultural Supervisor of the Arboretum. Longwood Gardens also keeps resident garden kitties. We re seeking more placements for some great barn kitties patiently waiting for your call. Please visit our website www.straycatblues.petfinder.org and complete a Barn Cat Application or call: 215-631-1851 and leave a message for Linda W, our barn cat coordinator. www.straycatblues.org
