It is important to check subsequently that the antibiotic chosen matches the swab result. Diabetic foot infections range from simple acute cellulites to chronic osteomyelitis and always require aggressive management. In more complex patients e.g. those over 75 years old and/or history of C.difficile diarrhoea, discussion with microbiologist is recommended. If first line treatment has not worked then repeat the swab and discuss with microbiologist.
