Furry Fall 2018 Pet ssisted Therapy Services Friends Short Paws The Official Newsletter of Furry Friends P..T.S. Sign Up for Holiday Pictures Every year Randy Fishel does professional pictures of Furry Friends volunteers and their pets for holiday pictures. It is done in an enclosed garage and he has 4 different backdrops. He has 20-minute appointment times, and will take as many photos as he can during that time with a couple of different backdrops (we have ordered two new ones for this year). He then transfers all of the pictures to your thumb drive to take home, edit and use to your hearts content. The cost is $25 - all proceeds go to Furry Friends since Randy donates his time. We are currently arranging the photo session dates and will be sending an email to all volunteers listing the dates soon. They will be on a weekend in late October and/or early November. Hopefully, there will be a weeknight date, too To make an appointment, email Randee at Randee@com-ctl.com 2019 Calendars - Call for Photos Every year as a small fundraiser, Furry Friends puts together a calendar with pictures of some of our furry friends. We would like to have pictures from you showing your furry friends doing what they do - swimming, hiking, reading buddies, sleeping, playing, whatever. (Please no people in the pictures though). We use Shutterfly for the calendar so the quality is high. The formatting of the calendar is 8 1/2 x 12, spiral bound. Please email your pictures in JPG format to calendars@ furryfriends.org. If you would like to mail a picture, please send it with a SSE to Randee Mcueen 2633 S. Bascom ve., Campbell, C 95008 and we will mail the picture back to you. The cost of the calendar is likely to be $20. We will order 50 calendars and will send out ordering information to the Furry Friends mailing list. Please send all photos by November 19th. We would love to have pictures from all of you!

Short Paws Fall 2018 3 Letter from the president: I recently attended an etiquette class and was excited to see the enthusiasm of our new volunteers. I would like to welcome our new volunteers to Furry Friends; I m sure you too will become passionate about Pet ssisted Therapy. nd a big thank you to all of our volunteers, long time or short, for the work you do in our communities. You do make a difference in peoples lives! Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. This is our main way of communicating with our more than 500 volunteers. If you have any suggestions, comments, or compliments, feel free to email me joan@furryfriends.org. Happy Fall! Joan Peterson Furry Friends Event, with our pets. Plans for a possible outing to Roaring Camp are off. They have a requirement that all large dogs must wear a muzzle. We attempted to have this rule removed for Furry Friends and they would not. Putting a muzzle on a pet therapy animal sends entirely the wrong message, so we will not pursue an outing on their trains. Do you have an idea of a place for Furry Friends volunteers and their animals to go as a group? If so, please send us your ideas and we will then ask for volunteers to help arrange the event. Randee & Joan Save the Date! Furry Friends will once again be wrapping gifts during the holiday season at the Barnes and Noble at 5353 lmaden Expressway, as a fund raiser for our wonderful organization. We have two dates booked, Saturday December 15 and Sunday December 16, from 9am to 4pm each day. Several shifts will be available each day, and sign ups will be managed via SignUp Genius. Watch your email for details!

4 Short Paws Fall 2018 Critter Doctor JULIE C. BOND, M.S, NIML BEHVIORIST I I While My best friend has the most adorable, super-social, outgoing kitten. He s a rescue, so we aren t really sure how old he is. The vet thinks he s about 6-8 months old right now. I think this kitten would make an amazing Furry Friend. I m bummed though that they can t take your class or start visits until he is a year old. How come there are age requirements for pet volunteers? M in San Jose am really glad you asked! We decided to enforce age requirements for pets because it is difficult to determine temperament or personality of an adult animal based solely on how they were as puppies or kittens. There is so much growth during that first year of life for dogs and cats and their temperaments can change based on their experiences. By waiting until a puppy or kitten is a year old, we have a better idea of who that dog or cat will be as a volunteer. It is easier for a veterinarian to assess them as well once they are mature. I do love puppies and kittens and really enjoy knowing that there are some amazing young animals out there that our volunteers are guiding and nurturing so that they can become pet assisted therapy animals after their first birthday! attended a school special visit a couple months ago. During the visit, another volunteer put down a water bowl for her dog. When my dog and another dog approached to get a drink, her dog growled and snapped at our dogs. We were really surprised and just moved our dogs away to drink out of a different bowl. We told the team captain, but I m wondering what can even be done about something like this. F in Palo lto it is unusual to hear of a dog displaying resource guarding with respect to a water bowl, it can happen, particularly if the bowl is theirs. If a volunteer knows that their dog will guard a water bowl, then they should give their dog water away from the group and keep other dogs away while their dog is drinking. Once their dog has had its fill, the water bowl should be picked up and put away. ny volunteer bringing a water bowl to visits needs to be certain that their dog is willing to share it. If not, then water must be given safely away from the group. The only situation in which I test dogs for sharing a communal water bowl is during the off leash evaluation and class. Since all of our special school visits are leashed, we have no way of knowing whether a dog there will guard a water bowl or not. You and the other volunteer who moved your dogs away and reported what you saw to your special visit team captain did the right thing. Thank you for bringing this to my attention as well so that we can make sure everyone on our special visits is safe and knows what to do in the future. I am a team captain for three different visits. Recently, I have had trouble with attendance on two of the visits. couple of the volunteers on my teams just don t show up for the visits.

Short Paws Fall 2018 5 That While I I email everyone ahead of time, and they either don t respond to my emails, or if they do respond, it s to tell me they won t be able to make it. This is frustrating as I feel like I should open up these teams to new volunteers who I can count on to be there. What should I do? R in Sunnyvale is frustrating! s a team captain, you have the authority to remove volunteers from your team who you feel aren t a good fit for whatever reason. Regular attendance while not mandatory, obviously, is critical to the success of our visits. If you are having visits where you don t have enough volunteers to meet the needs of the facility, then by all means, let Loree know (admin@ furryfriends.org) so that she can open up your teams to new members. nd, yes, you can simply tell these volunteers that you are removing them from your rosters because you need to have people on board who can be there more regularly. If you think that telling these volunteers that you are cutting them from your teams will create a problem, then let me know. I am happy to speak with them on your behalf. I recently took your etiquette class with my dog. While we passed the class, my dog did take a lot of interest in the cat there in class. She wasn t aggressive and she didn t bark, but she did watch the cat. Because of that, you said it would be safer for us to be on a dogs-only team. I was a little bit sad as I hoped ultimately to become a Reading Buddies volunteer with my dog and you said in class that all Reading Buddies dogs must be accepting of cats. Is it possible that I can attend the Reading Buddies class and see if my dog is better the next time around? D in Menlo Park we do try to cat-test all of the dogs (and other cats too!) during the etiquette class, it certainly isn t fool-proof and there have been dogs who have been re-tested with cats and passed the second time around. So, yes, because your dog didn t display outright aggression and agitation with regard to the cat in class, you are welcome to come back and re-test around cats as part of our Reading Buddies program. Just remember you will need to wait until you have been volunteering for 6 months or longer before taking the Reading Buddies class. One of the senior visits I do is at a facility where the residents are allowed to have small dogs or cats. My team captain has asked that all of the residents confine their animals to their rooms when we are there. This doesn t seem like too big of a deal because we don t go room to room, rather we visit in the living room area. However, on our last two visits, one of the residents has brought her dog down during our scheduled Furry Friends visit. Her dog barks and growls and isn t really very nice to the dogs on our team. We try to avoid going where this resident and her dog are sitting, but she moves around and will walk right up to us to talk to us during our visits. Help! J in therton have had this same issue on one of my teams. Basically, your team captain needs to speak to whoever is in charge of programs and events at this facility and gently but firmly remind them that resident pets must be confined during our scheduled visits for the safety of everyone. Our volunteers and their pets have been screened and evaluated, but we have no way of knowing the social history or experience of the pets belonging to residents and we can t put our volunteers and their pets at risk. If your team captain has any trouble getting this message across, please let me know, and I will contact the facility and see if we can get this resolved.
